- If
you can draw any conclusion from the individual stats above it would be the scoring contribution from the defensemen. Matt Register and Les Lancaster are at or near the top of the ECHL in all offensive categories. As a group the defensemen have 30% of all Allen's points this season (73 of 243) which is the highest percentage in the league.
- Here is how the Americans rank in some critical statistical categories among the 14 ECHL teams playing this season:
Goal differential: #4 (+17)
Average PIMS per game: #6 (12.85)
Power play: #7 (16.8%)
Penalty kill: #11 (79.4%)
Ave. goals scored: #4 (3.41)
Ave. goals against: #6 (2.78)
Ave. shots for per game: #2 (32.74)
Ave. shots against per game: #12 (32.63)
Shooting percentage: #4 (10.2%)
Team save percentage: #3 (.915)
- As a comparison here are the same team stats from the end of December:
Goal differential: #2 (+10)
Average PIMS per game: #5 (13.40)
Power play: #8 (11.1%)
Penalty kill: #11 (81.3%)
Ave. goals scored: #2 (4.00)
Ave. goals against: #2 (2.00)
Ave. shots for per game: #2 (35.80)
Ave. shots against per game: #12 (32.89)
Shooting percentage: #3 (11.2%)
Team save percentage: #2 (.944)
- Two stats that stand out are average goals scored and allowed. While they are still decent numbers the average goals scored has decreased from 4.00 to 3.41 and average goals allowed has increased from 2.00 to 2.78. That computes to a goal differential of +2.00 at the end of December and +0.63 now.
- FYI when Allen won the Kelly Cup in 2014-15 and led the league
with an average of 4.06 goals per game it allowed 2.82 goals per game
for a differential +1.24. The following season (2015-16) when the Americans won their second Kelly Cup they averaged just 3.08 goals per game and allowed 2.83 goals per game for a goal differential of +0.25. Bottom line is there are a lot of paths to the championship.
- It is
clear the area in need of the most improvement is special
teams. If you combine the power play percentage and penalty kill
percentage anything above 105% is considered excellent and anything
below 100% needs improvement. Allen's current combined percentage is just
96.2% but that is a small improvement from the end of December when it was 92.4%. The power play has improved but the penalty kill has gotten worse. It is hard to see the Americans being successful if they don't see improvement on special teams, especially the penalty kill.
