Penalties Tell the Story as Allen Loses 2-1 and Splits with Wichita, Game Recap, Video Highlights, Good and Bad from the Weekend, Home Opener Attendance and More

The Allen Americans ended up splitting with the Wichita Thunder this weekend, losing before 4065 fans on Sunday afternoon by the same 2-1 score they won by on Saturday. The story of the game was penalties. Too many on Allen's part which led to both of Wichita's goals. The Thunder were 2-6 on the power play and the Americans were 0-1.

- Allen's lone goal was scored even strength midway through the second period by Jack Combs, who tallied two of the three goals the Americans scored over the weekend.

-  Here are two game recaps with the details:

- Here is a link to the video highlights: https://www.echl.com/en/video/2022/10/wichita-thunder-vs-allen-americans---oct-30-2022-xnXwQNII

- The good news from the weekend:

  • Allen out shot Wichita in both games by a total of 66-46. This was a weak link last season when Allen was ranked #26 in the ECHL in shots allowed.
  • Allen allowed just three goals in two games. The Americans will not lose many games this season when allowing one or two goals per game. Last season Allen's record when allowing two or fewer goals was 21-2-1-0.
  • Both goalies were great. Peressini stopped 21 of 22 shots on Saturday for a save percentage of .955. Flodell stopped 22 of 24 shots on Sunday for a save percentage of .917.

- The bad news from the weekend:

  • Allen took too many penalties which led to 11 Wichita power play opportunities while the Americans had just four. Allen is now averaging over eight minor penalties per game, the highest average in the ECHL.
  • Allen scored just three goals in two games. Averaging 1.5 goals per game will not win many games. Last season Allen's record when scoring two or fewer goals was 1-20-3-1.
  • Allen gave up the first goal on Sunday and lost the game. The Americans are a perfect 2-0 this season when they score first and a perfect 0-2 when they give up the first goal.

-  I mentioned yesterday the Allen home opener drew the second best attendance for any home opener in franchise history. I was asked about the some of the home opener attendance in other years, so here it is for all years:

  • 2009-10: 5808
  • 2010-11: 3151
  • 2011-12: 3872
  • 2012-13: 4853
  • 2013-14: 4911*
  • 2014-15: 5006*
  • 2015-16: 4745*
  • 2016-17: 5062*
  • 2017-18: 4871
  • 2018-19: 5302
  • 2019-20: 4825
  • 2020-21: 2032
  • 2021-22: 5443
  • 2022-23: 5529

*Home openers following championship seasons.

- The Allen coaching staff's goal for the team is improving every day and they will have plenty of time to do just that, as the team has only one game from today until November 9. The one game is Friday when the Americans travel to Wichita. There is always plenty to work on early in the season, but practice time will soon become scarce. From November 16 through December 31, Allen plays 19 games and travels to Cincinnati, Fort Wayne, Idaho, Reading, Tulsa and Wichita and also has a three day Christmas break. It becomes almost impossible to fit in many practices with so many games and so much travel.

- The Mountain Division remains the tightest of the four ECHL Divisions. Two divisions (North & Central) still have undefeated teams and winless teams. Here are the Mountain Division points percentages for each team. I use points percentage instead of points to account for the unequal number of games played.

  • .750 - Idaho
  • .667 - Kansas City
  • .625 - Wichita
  • .500 - Allen
  • .500 - Rapid City
  • .500 - Utah
  • .333 - Tulsa

DID YOU KNOW: After two weekends just four ECHL teams remain undefeated. Here is their 2021-22 overall regular season points percentage ranking and playoff results:

5-0-0-0: Newfoundland, 3rd, lost in conference final
5-0-0-0: Worcester, 21st, missed playoffs
4-0-0-0: Savannah, new franchise in 2022-23
4-0-0-0: Cincinnati, 14th, lost in 1st round

How rare are these win streaks?

Newfoundland - all last season the Growlers had two win streaks that exceeded five games.

Worcester - all last season the Railers had no win streaks that exceeded five games. They had one five game win streak.

Cincinnati - All last season the Cyclones had just one win streak that exceeded three games. They had one five game win streak.

Allen Wins Home Opener in Entertaining Style, Game Recap, Video Highlights, Coach and Player Comments and More

It was quite the night for the 2022 Allen Americans home opener. A new coach, a new team, a huge crowd, a goalie duel, great defense, a fight, a penalty shot and an overtime win.

- The Allen Americans defeated the Wichita Thunder 2-1 in overtime last night before a crowd of 5529 at the CUTX Event Center. The attendance was the second largest home opener in franchise history, only exceeded by the first game ever at the brand new Allen Event Center on November 7, 2009 which drew a sellout crowd of 5808.

- If you are an avid hockey fan it is hard not to like a game like last night. It had a little bit of everything. Here is a recap of the game in bullet point form:

  • Allen scored first, the only goal of the first period. Hank Crone scored his second goal of the season assisted by Zach Pochiro and Colton Hargrove.
  • Wichita tied the score on a penalty shot at 19:01 of the second period to tie the score 1-1.
  • There was no scoring in the third period.
  • Jack Combs, the veteran with the best career points per game average in the league (minimum 100 games played), scored the game winner just 30 seconds into the over time period on a great pass by Kris Myllari.
  • Both goalies, Luke Peressini (Allen) and Evan Buitenhuis (Wichita) were outstanding in goal making numerous high quality saves.
  •  Nico Blachman, playing his first game for the Americans, had his first fight and acquitted himself very well.
  • Both teams had a 100% penalty kill percentage, Allen killing five penalties, Wichita three.
  • Allen outshot Wichita in every period and 36-22 for the game. The Americans are ranked #8 in shots allowed this season (26.7) after finishing #26 last season (35.3)

- Post game comments from Chad Costello, Jack Combs and Nico Blachman who met with season ticket holders after the game:

  • "That was an exciting game, hopefully they are all not like that or I am going to age pretty quick"...Chad Costello
  • "I am really excited to be head coach of this team, the fans are super important to me, Allen is important to me and it is a blessing just to be here. I love our team and hope you do too. It is an awesome group of guys and a group of great young men.".....Chad Costello
  • "Thank you for having me in Allen, I am extremely grateful to be here and be part of this first class organization. I am glad we got a win for you tonight.".....Nico Blachman
  • "On my fight he cross-checked me and I cross-checked him, so I asked him to go and he said yes. Always good to create some energy on opening night at home.".....Nico Blachman
  • "That was fun! Thanks for all of the support with a sellout crowd in our first game. I thought we could have had a couple of more goals but we kept sticking with it and got the win in the end, so I'm pretty pumped and hope it is a great year. We are super excited.".....Jack Combs
  • "On the OT goal they turned the puck over at the blue line and I saw Myllari streaking down the other wing and I gave it to him and I tried to skate as fast as I possibly could, though it probably didn't look like it. Mayllari gave me a great pass and I was fortunate to slip it in there. It was a huge win and we are pumped to win for you guys.".....Jack Combs
  • "The game is so fast now, I think we have a good mix of players that think fast and players that skate fast. If you watch the NHL, sometimes the games don't look as crazy as ours because their brains are working at such a fast pace. They know where to be before a player at a lower level. Foot speed and brain speed is very important and we have a good mix.".....Chad Costello
  • "We talk about physicality all of the time. As a group I think we are very skilled, but we want to be the stiffer hockey team most nights. Every game so far we have led in hits. The last game in Wichita we were over double in hits. We are a much better team when we hit.".....Chad Costello

- If all the players reported as expected this morning, with nothing more than bumps and bruises, the Allen lineup will be the same this afternoon (2:05 pm) as it was last night, with the exception that Logan Flodell will get the start in goal.

- The referee for the game this afternoon will be the same as last night, #22 Sam Heidemann.

DID YOU KNOW: Some stingy defenses and great goalie play in the 12 ECHL games last night:

4 shutouts: Johnson FLA, Kupsky IDH, Cormier KAL, Starrett, KC
4 teams allowed just one goal: NFL, MNE, IND, ALN
3 winning teams scored just 2 goals: FLA, KAL, ALN

Scores of the 12 games:
Kalamazoo beat Toledo 2-0
Florida beat Jacksonville 2-0
Kansas City beat Rapid City 3-0
Idaho beat Utah 4-0
Allen beat Wichita 2-1 (OT)
Newfoundland beat Trois Rivieres 3-1
Indy beat Reading 3-1
Maine beat Norfolk 6-1
Worcester beat Adirondack 4-2
Cincinnati beat Iowa 5-2
Greenville beat South Carolina 9-3
Savannah beat Fort Wayne 6-5 (OT)

You add it all up and the 12 losing teams last night scored a total of just 16 goals, for an average of 1.33 goals per losing team.

Allen vs Wichita Preview, Logan Flodell Returns to Allen, ECHL Home Records and More

The long wait is over for Allen fans as the 14th home opener in franchise history takes place tonight at the CUTX Event Center. Some facts about the home openers over the years.

  • In year one (2009-10) the arena was still under construction when the season began so Allen played its first seven games on the road. The home opener took place on November 7 and the Americans lost to Corpus Christi 4-1. Here is a trivia question for you. Who scored the third goal for Corpus Christi in that game and what was his number. The answer is #61 Chad Costello.
  • It is hard to forget the home opener last season. Allen suffered its worst shutout ever (7-0) and it was to the opponent tonight, Wichita. Allen goalie Alex Gravel had to play the entire game for the Americans because Allen had to use an EBUG (Thomas Hodges).
  • Prior to last season the worst home opener ever was in 2014-15 when Allen got beat by Tulsa 9-6. Greger Hanson was the lone bright spot for Allen with a whopping 11 shots on goal, four points and a hat trick. Aaron Dell was in goal for the Americans and gave up seven of the nine goals. It was Dell's only regulation loss in the 12 games he played for Allen that season. By the end of January he was in the AHL on his way to the NHL.
  • 2016-17 was another memorable home opener. The Americans beat Missouri 6-3, but it took a heroic effort from Riley Gill who faced 47 shots. The game winning goal was scored by Chad Costello
  • Allen's earliest and latest home openers happened in successive years. In 2019-20 the home opener was on October 11 and the following year, with the season delayed because of Covid, the home opener wasn't until December 12.
  • Allen's all time record in home openers is 6-7. Interestingly, when Allen won championships in 2014, 2015 and 2016 it lost the home opener.

- The game tonight will be the second of four straight games against Wichita. The Americans beat the Thunder 5-3 last Saturday in Wichita and will play them again on the road next Friday (November 4) after games tonight and tomorrow afternoon in Allen.

- Wichita played Tulsa at home last night and fell behind 2-0 in the first three minutes of the game but came back to win 5-3. Tulsa out shot Wichita 52-32. The game ended at 9:40 pm. so it was a long night for the Thunder as they traveled to Allen for the games against the Americans tonight  and Sunday afternoon (2:05 pm).

- It is a very small sample size comparing stats between Allen and Wichita but they have surprisingly similar stats. Here are a few example:

  • Both teams are 1-1, though Allen's are road games, Wichita's are home games
  • Both teams are averaging 4.0 goals per game
  • Both teams penalty kill percentage is 75%
  • Wichita has a slight edge in power play percentage (28.6% vs 27.3%)
  • Allen has the edge in goals allowed (3.5 vs 4.0)
  • Neither team has scored or allowed a shorthanded goal.
  • Allen averages 7.0 minor penalties per game, Wichita 6.5.

- Scoring first is always a big key. In the ECHL this season teams that score first have a record of 28-9-3-1 which is a points percentage of .732. In the first two games of the season, Allen gave up the first goal in Tulsa and lost, scored the first goal in Wichita and won.

- Allen has the second oldest team in the ECHL with an average age of 26.41. Wichita averages over two years younger per player and is the third youngest team in the league with an average age of 24.32.

- Wichita has six players assigned from San Jose and they had a big part in the Thunder win last night. The winning goalie (Strauss Mann) was just assigned to Wichita. The #1 star of the game was another assigned player, power forward Dillon Hamaliuk who had three points (2G, 1A). He spent the entire 2021-22 season with the Barracuda. He wears #28 and is a player to watch this weekend. San Jose sent its first round (#31 overall) 2020 draft choice (Ozzy Wiesblatt) to Wichita this week, but as soon as he arrived he was recalled without playing a game.

- Another Wichita player to keep an eye on tonight is #17 Stefan Fournier, who was shown as one of the two extra forwards (not on the top three lines) last night. Fournier has a goal in each of Wichita's games and was taunting some Allen players last Saturday. Would expect he gets plenty of attention tonight.

- Allen's leading scorers with four points in two games are  #23 Colton Saucerman (2G, 2A) and #15 Liam Finlay (1G, 3A). Defenseman Saucerman is tied for the ECHL lead is scoring by defensemen. Finlay's three assists is tied for second among all ECHL rookies.

- Allen will be playing this weekend without captain Spencer Asuchak who will be serving his two game suspension. Ashchak is suspected to be out of the lineup a long time recovering from an injury he suffered in Tulsa last Friday. If you are wondering who will wear the "C" while Asuchak is out of the lineup the answer is nobody. Allen will go with three alternate captains (A) during Asuchak's absence.

- The Americans got some good news yesterday as goalie Logan Flodell has been returned to Allen from the Belleville Senators. No need to use an EBUG tonight. Luke Peressini will get the start tonight.

- Coach Costello has found a way to have a pretty full lineup for the game tonight, despite the salary cap problems. By my calculation, Allen will have 16 skaters, 10 forwards and six defensemen, with Jared Bethune playing up front. The players that will miss the game are:

  • Spencer Asuchak (suspended/injured)
  • Mikael Robidoux (suspended)
  • Stephen Baylis (injured)
  • Andrew Durham (on reserve)

OTHER COMMENTS

- By the looks of the ECHL standings, the Mountain Division is distinguished by its parity early in the season. It is the only division without an undefeated team and one of two divisions without a winless. Three teams (Idaho, Rapid City, Utah) are 2-1 and three (Allen, Kansas City, Wichita) are 1-1. Tulsa (1-2) is the only team in the division with a losing record.

- Another 12 games on tap tonight around the ECHL. Tulsa is the only Mountain Division team that is idle. Here is the ECHL Today with a preview of all of the games. https://www.echl.com/en/news/2022/10/echl-today-oct-29

DID YOU KNOW: Home ice is normally a big advantage for ECHL teams. Last season (2021-22) just three teams had a losing record at home while 15 teams had losing road records.

It is a small sample size but one ECHL division has struggled mightily at home this season. Here is the points percentage and home record by division, thus far in 2022-23:

.625 (5-3-0-0): Mountain Division
.625 (7-4-1-0): North Division
.600 (5-3-2-0): South Division
.227 (2-8-0-1): Central Division

Allen Hit with Two Suspensions, Wichita Makes Changes for Player Safety, Roster Update and More

First but hopefully not the last team photo of 2022-23

The ECHL brought the hammer down on the Allen Americans yesterday afternoon by suspending Mikael Robidoux 14 games and threw in a two game suspension for Spencer Asuchak to add insult to injury (literally).

If you haven't seen the press release on the suspensions, this is what it said, "The ECHL on Thursday announced the following fines and suspensions resulting from ECHL Game #296, Allen at Wichita, on Oct. 22.

Allen’s Spencer Asuchak has been suspended for two games and fined an undisclosed amount under Rule #28 – Supplementary Discipline as the result of his actions while serving as a non-uniform assistant coach at 19:29 of the second period.

Asuchak will miss Allen’s games vs. Wichita on Oct. 29 and Oct. 30.

Allen’s Mikael Robidoux has been suspended for 14 games as the result of his actions after leaving the ice surface at 19:29 of the second period.

Robidoux will miss the next 14 games on Allen’s schedule and will be eligible to return on Dec. 4."

- Despite the many mitigating factors related to Robidoux's encounter with the fan, including the fan's behavior, the arena security, the officiating, etc., there was no doubt the league would not tolerate Robidoux's reaction. It will never be known but it is possible the suspension would have been 20+ games rather than 14 had the mitigating circumstances not been considered.

- When I talked to coach Costello about the Robidoux suspension it was obvious he had his opinion on the incident, but he was clearly looking forward and working on what he had to do to get the best lineup on the ice for the weekend. His comment to me was, "Sure it is a setback, but we will have a great team on the ice Saturday, which is capable of winning."

- The surprise for many was the two game suspension for Spencer Asuchak. He was suspended for squirting water into the stands. As you might imagine the ECHL has had plenty of experience with this type of thing in the past and the discipline is consistently a two game suspension.

- It is not as simple as putting two different players in the lineup to replace Asuchak and Robidoux. The ECHL rule is they must remain on the active roster and their salary still counts toward the salary cap even though they are suspended. Coach Costello will become an expert in "capology" trying to maximize the number of players that can actually play this weekend. He does have some tools in the toolbox to minimize the impact of the suspensions.

- Since the suspensions were announced yesterday afternoon I have seen quite a few comments about nothing being done about player safety in Wichita. There was no mention of player safety in the press release. I had heard Wichita has been very cooperative regarding this incident and is making changes to improve player safety at INTRUST Bank Arena. This morning I contacted Wichita General Manager, Joel Lomurno, who gave me an update on what is being done to improve player safety:

  • Effective tonight (Wichita plays Tulsa) security will be present down by the visitor bench. That alone should alleviate any problems in the future.
  • The railings are being raised to help protect the players.
  • Covering the walkway/tunnel is being worked on but it effects the sight lines of several rows of people, so the actual fix is still to be determined.
  • As far as the fan that was involved, the incident is still under review, it is being taken very seriously and a determination will be made very soon.

- While Allen was losing two players to suspension, Wichita has been gaining players. In the last two days the Thunder have been assigned the San Jose Sharks 2020 first round (#31 overall) draft pick, Ozzy Wiesblatt and goalie Strauss Mann, whose resume includes being captain at the University of Michigan (2020-21) with a .930 save percentage, a year playing in the top league in Sweden (SHL) with a .918 save percentage and a member of the 2022 US Winter Olympic Team, with a save percentage of .945.

- By my count Wichita now has seven assigned players, but some are out with injuries. It will be a challenge for the Americans for sure. Remember, Allen plays Wichita twice this weekend but also in its next game on November 4th in Wichita. It will be the only game Allen plays next weekend.

- Talk about bringing back some great memories, I attended Allen practice yesterday and Gary Steffes, Mental Performance and Player Development Coach, joined Chad Costello and Aaron Gens on the ice. Six Kelly Cup rings between them as teammates in 2014-15 and 2015-16. They were all active participants in the drills and look like they could still play.

- The post game meeting/press conference with season ticket holders will return this season. Coach Costello and maybe a player or two will discuss the game and answer questions. The first post game event will be after the game on Saturday in the old season ticket holder lounge.  There won't be one after the game on Sunday which will be televised, so likely post game interviews will be part of that broadcast.

OTHER COMMENTS

- After the first week of the ECHL season there are still nine undefeated teams. There are also six winless teams. With most teams playing two or three games this weekend, the top teams and bottom teams will start becoming apparent.

- There are nine games on the ECHL schedule tonight with six Mountain Division teams in action, including Tulsa at Wichita. While the Americans have the night off, Wichita has to play at home and then make the 365 mile bus trip to Allen. Here is the ECHL Today with a preview tonight's nine games. https://www.echl.com/en/news/2022/10/echl-today-oct-28

DID YOU KNOW: When is the jersey reversal date?

While there are exceptions sometimes when teams wear specialty jerseys, here is the general rule in the ECHL. Teams will wear their white jerseys at home and dark jerseys on the road for all games through Jan. 16, 2023. As of Jan. 20, 2023, teams will wear their dark jerseys at home and their white jerseys on the road through the end of the regular season. During the Playoffs, home teams will continue wearing their dark jerseys and visiting teams will continue to wear their white jerseys.

Practice and Roster Update - Flodell Recalled, EBUG Signed, New Tough Guy Nico Blachman Player Profile and More

The challenges continue for the Allen Americans as they prepare for week two of the ECHL season. The new challenge that happened yesterday was goalie Logan Flodell, Allen's only assigned player from Ottawa, was recalled to Belleville. You can't say it was a surprise, as I mentioned in the blog yesterday, Ottawa and Belleville have had a bunch of goalie injuries. Belleville starts a three game road trip to three different cities tonight.

- With Allen down to one goalie and a light schedule coming up, Coach Costello decided to sign an EBUG for the two home games against Wichita this weekend. The EBUG will be Anthony D'Aloisio, who was in training camp with the Americans. He is a local guy (Frisco) who played college hockey at the University of Southern Maine.

- The other signing yesterday was forward Nico Blachman. With Mikael Robidoux headed for a suspension of undetermined length (he had a hearing with the league yesterday) and Spencer Asuchak likely headed to the injured reserve, there was a need for coach Costello to add a player. In the next 10 days Allen plays three games, all against Wichita. Blachman will bring the toughness missing from Robidoux being suspended. The Americans will be ready no matter what style Wichita wants to play.

- It is unclear on the status of Marcel Godbout and Stephen Baylis for the weekend. While both are listed as day to day, Godbout has been participating in practice wearing the no contact jersey (which is now red instead of yellow), but Baylis is still not skating.

NICO BLACHMAN PLAYER PROFILE

- Nico Blachman has an interesting story, growing up in Florida to parents from Argentina. His passion for hockey started very young and the lengths he took to fulfill his dream of playing in the NHL are extraordinary, taking him far and wide. By my count he has played for 16 different teams since 2012-13 when he was 14 years old. Blachman is 6'2', 194 pounds, 24 years old, right shot forward who is not afraid to drop the gloves. He has fought many former Allen Americans including Kelly Bent, Josh Thrower, Kyle Neuber, and Corbin Baldwin.

Here is a great story about Blachman's background, growing up in Florida and his long and arduous  journey to pro hockey: https://bvmsports.com/2021/07/16/south-florida-hockey-player-continues-to-rise-through-the-ranks/

Blachman's most famous fight/punch was last season in South Carolina when he left the bench to defend is teammate, Jordan Subban, who was the subject of a racial taunt. https://www.counton2.com/sports/echl-suspends-jacksonville-icemen-defenseman-for-racist-taunt-aimed-at-south-carolina-stingrays-player/

Here is a video interview that is long but worth watching. It has some foul language, but well worth watching if you are a fan of fighting or want to get to know Blachman's approach to his role. Skip the first few minutes: https://youtu.be/zfpILxeervg

Hard to pick out one Blachman fight but this is a good example. : https://youtu.be/cEiUrHBkgb4

 OTHER COMMENTS

 - The Western Hockey League (WHL) has been a big source of recruiting players for the Allen Americans over the years. Some seasons over half the team came from the WHL. This season just five Allen players played junior hockey in the WHL, the fewest in memory:

  • Spencer Asuchak
  • Jared Bethune
  • Ryan Gagnon
  • Jackson Leppard
  • Zach Pochiro

Here is the latest on WHL players named to the NHL Central Scouting watch list. No doubt some future Allen Americans players on this list along with many future NHL players. https://whl.ca/article/43-whl-players-named-to-nhl-central-scouting-preliminary-players-to-watch-list

- There are three ECHL games scheduled today, including Cincinnati at Kalamazoo which is an Education Day game with a 10:30 am EDT start. When the puck is dropped it will set ECHL history. Here are the details:  https://prohockeynews.com/kalamazoos-martin-and-cincinnatis-payne-set-to-face-off-in-historic-game/

DID YOU KNOW: Here is my ECHL stats post for today. While the reason Allen has no NHL/AHL players assigned is understandable, given all the injuries sustained in Belleville and Ottawa, it really puts the Americans at a disadvantage. The reason some ECHL teams get 10-15 players assigned is because their NHL/AHL affiliate signs lots of extra players. I have heard teams like Toronto, who is affiliated with Newfoundland, will sign as many as 20 extra players each season. That is a very costly proposition. A team like Ottawa, who doesn't sign a lot of extra players, has fewer players to assign, especially if they get a rash of injuries.

18 of 28 ECHL teams have five or more NHL/AHL contracted players assigned. The number of players assigned ranges from zero (Allen) to 15 (Newfoundland). Assigned players count only $525 per week against the salary cap, less than most rookies make. Rookie salaries are between $510 (minimum) and $600 (maximum). Affiliations provide good players at low cost, a big key to success in the ECHL.

Allen Americans Daily Report

Not much new to report this morning which means you will get whatever I can come up with in the next couple of hours. The Americans will be back at practice today after a couple of days off to heal the bumps and bruises from opening weekend. I will attend practice and hopefully have some updates tomorrow.

- Availability for the home opener on Saturday remains a question mark. Allen currently has 21 players on the roster and a maximum of 19 can dress for each game. It is almost certain (understatement) that Mikael Robidoux and Spencer Asuchak will be out this weekend. Marcel Godbout and Stephen Baylis did not make the road trip over the weekend because of injuries. Godbout was skating last week wearing the no contact jersey and coach Costello has said he should be ready for the home opener. Not sure on the status of Baylis. If Baylis isn't available the Americans would have 18 players for Saturday. However, playing all 18 may create a salary cap issue because Robidoux has to stay on the active roster and his salary counts toward the salary cap.

-  According to my reporting the hearing for Mikael Robidoux with the ECHL office takes place today. The Commissioner's decision on the length of his suspension should not take long. It would be great if the league would also comment on changes they would like to see implemented in arenas to protect the safety of visiting players.

- Defenseman Colton Saucerman is off to a great start with four points (2G, 2A) in two games. He leads the ECHL in scoring by a defenseman. His 2.00 points per game average got me thinking about what former Allen defensemen have the best points per game average during their time in Allen. It is a who's who of former players dating all the way back to the first season in 2009-10. Here the top 10 best career points per game average by Allen defensemen (minimum 100 games played).

  • .86 - Les Lancaster (2019-21)

  • .78 - David Makowski (2015-19)
  • .70 - Tyler Ludwig (2011-15)
  • .66 - Matt Register (2011-21)
  • .62 - Eric Roy (2015-22)
  • .60 - Joel Chouinard (2016-19)

- There has been a lot of discussion about the help provided by Allen's affiliate (Ottawa/Belleville). The facts show there has not been much help thus far. Allen has just one assigned player (Logan Flodell) which is the fewest in the league. By my count 18 of 28 ECHL teams have five or more assigned players. The lack of assigned players says nothing about the relationship between Allen and Ottawa/Belleville. There has been constant communication between Chad Costello, Belleville coach, Troy Mann and general manager, Ryan Bowness. The reason players haven't been assigned is Ottawa and Belleville have been hit with a lot of injuries. If you watched Ottawa beat Dallas last night you heard about some of the injuries. The Senators top two goalies are injured and they started Magnus Hellberg, who prior to last night had five NHL starts for four different teams over his 11 year pro career. Yesterday Iowa loaned forward Matthew Boucher, (2020-21 ECHL Rookie of the Year) to Belleville. Coach Costello is confident he will get additional players assigned as injured players return.

- It is a very small sample size, but four ECHL teams are in the top seven in both average goals scored and average goals allowed after opening weekend. (Cincinnati, Newfoundland, South Carolina, Toledo). This is a great indicator of success. Last season, three of the final four teams in the Kelly Cup playoffs including the final two finished in the top seven in the ECHL in goals scored and allowed.

- Rookies Liam Finlay (4 points) and Hank Crone (3 points) look like they could be big scorers for the Americans this season. The last rookies to lead the team in scoring were Tyler Sheehy (2019-20) and Alex Lavoie (2013-14). FYI, the top three rookies in the ECHL right now have five points an all play for South Carolina.

DID YOU KNOW: In 2020-21 and 2021-22 a total of 83 ECHL players scored more than 50 points. Just seven (8%) were defensemen:

64 - Les Lancaster, Allen (2020-21)
62 - Ben Finkelstein, Newfoundland (2021-22)
57 - Charle-Edouard D’Astous, Utah (2021-22)
52 - Matt Register, Allen (2020-21)
52 - Josh Maniscalco, Wheeling (2021-22)
52 - Randy Gazzola, Toledo (2021-22)
52 - Marcus Crawford, Kansas City (2021-22)

No Time to Revel in Victory - General Manager Costello Deals with Suspension Hearing, Captain's Injury and Immigration SNAFU

It turned out to be a costly opening weekend for the Allen Americans that could unfortunately impact the team for quite a while. The good news is Allen bounced back from a 4-3 loss in Tulsa on Friday to get coach Costello his first win in Wichita on Saturday. A shorthanded Americans team beat the Thunder 5-3. However, the celebration was short lived as Costello is now dealing with injuries, suspensions and immigration issues. Here is an update:

JACKSON LEPPARD: Some type of immigration snafu caused Leppard to sit out both games this weekend even though he was on the trip. The good news is this will be resolved and Leppard will be good to go for the home opener on Saturday.

SPENCER ASUCHAK: A lower leg injury in Tulsa has Asuchak likely out of the lineup for the foreseeable future. Nothing will be known for sure until he sees the doctor, but it doesn't look good. If you watched the game on Friday, it sure looked like a penalty, but none was called. Not sure if the referee didn't see the hit or thought it was a legal one, but the end result has put the captain on the sidelines. Hopefully Spencer will get good news from the doctor and his absence will be shorter than anticipated.

MIKAEL ROBIDOUX: The ECHL suspended Robidoux indefinitely yesterday for an incident with a fan in Wichita on Saturday as he was leaving the ice after being given a 10 minute misconduct penalty. The ECHL press release said this:

"Allen's Mikael Robidoux has been suspended indefinitely pending a hearing with ECHL Hockey Operations and fined an undisclosed amount as a result of his actions in ECHL Game #296, Allen at Wichita, on Oct. 22. Robidoux is fined and suspended under Rule #28 - Supplementary Discipline as the result of his actions after leaving the ice surface at 19:29 of the second period. Further details on Robidoux's suspension will be announced following his hearing this week."

If you haven't seen what happened here is a video of the incident:  https://youtu.be/U9FyuYgphwI

- A starting point in discussing this incident is what is contained in the ECHL Official Rule Book and the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA):

ECHL Rule 23.9:  Any player, goalkeeper or non-playing Club personnel who physically interferes with the spectators, becomes involved in an altercation with a spectator, throws or shoots any object at a spectator in or out of the playing surface, shall automatically incur a game misconduct penalty and the referee shall report all such infractions to the Commissioner who shall have full power to impose such further penalty as he shall deem appropriate."

CBA Article X, Section 6 (2): For any suspension that exceeds twenty (20) games, the Commissioner must hold a hearing upon adequate notice to the Player and the PHPA of the date and time of the hearing. The Player shall have the right to be represented by a representative of the PHPA. Such hearing may be held in person or by teleconference. The decision of the Commissioner shall be final and binding upon all parties and shall not be reviewable by any court or be the subject of a grievance except for abuse of discretion by the Commissioner.

- Not sure if the hearing is because the proposed suspension is for more than 20 games or for some other reason like the fact there was fan involvement, but it is obvious the league is taking this incident very seriously.

- No matter how you view this incident and I have heard many points of view since Saturday night, the best course of action for Robidoux would have been to keep walking and ignore the fan. With that said there are plenty of mitigating circumstances that should be considered in determining the length of the suspension.

- The mitigating factors:

  • Wichita has had more than its share of incidents with players over the years. It is one of the few ECHL arenas where fans can literally touch the players as they leave the ice.
  • It is clear from the video the fan reached out at Robidoux.
  • From what I understand the fan was removed and it may have not been the first time this has happened.
  • Robidoux was not given a game misconduct and played the rest of the game. Maybe the officials didn't see what happened.
  • There were no security or arena personnel in the tunnel.
  • Tweet from longtime ECHL player Jesse Mychan, who was suspended after an altercation with Robidoux last season, so not a friend, "In Robi's defense, I've been spit on numerous times leaving the ice in Wichita (looks like by the same fan). You can never touch a fan or swing your stick BUT the league should consider why he defended himself."
  • Tweet from Justin Cohn, long time sportswriter for The Journal Gazette (Fort Wayne). "30 seconds left in the period -- I know it takes staff and/or money -- but should have security or a moveable tunnel, especially for certain rivalries. they do that at the NHL level for a reason."
  • Tweet from Robidoux's teammate Jack Combs, "Probably time for the league and rink to protect visiting players as well? In almost every other rink in the league fans don't have direct access to the players."

- When I reached Chad Costello late last night for a statement it was clear he has some strong opinions on this entire incident, from what took place on the ice before it happened to what happened after the incident. There is no doubt Costello will be well prepared for the hearing and will get to share his thoughts in a professional, well reasoned manner. Here is the statement Costello gave me:

"There are many parties at fault in this situation. We will meet with the league later this week to hear the decision on the fan, the building arrangements and the player. I will continue to support Robi and all of our players in any playing and learning situations. We will know more soon."

- The bottom line for me is a suspension is appropriate, even with the mitigating circumstances, but if the proposed suspension is for more than 20+ games, it seems way too harsh. The fact that Robidoux is a repeat offender will obviously not help his case. Whatever the Commissioner ends up deciding on the length of the suspension, let's hope this incident motivates the league to help facilitate changes in arenas like Wichita's, in an effort to do a better job of protecting visiting players from fans that get out of hand.

- Something to keep in mind when the Robidoux suspension is decided. Players who are suspended must remain on the active roster, which means their salary counts towards the salary cap even though they are not playing. This could mean the Americans might have to play shorthanded for the length of the suspension, just to fit under the salary cap.

DID YOU KNOW: How important is a lead in ECHL games? The stats after opening weekend are really compelling. Comebacks are rare for sure!

22-1-1-0: Record for teams leading after the first period opening weekend.
23-1-1-0: Record for teams leading after the second period opening weekend.

In 2021-22 the record for teams with a second period lead was 654-47-39-18. That record computes to a points percentage of exactly .900.

In 2021-22, seven teams never lost a game in regulation time all season when leading after the second period (Adirondack, Allen, Cincinnati, Fort Wayne, Iowa, Jacksonville, Tulsa).

Allen Wins, Costello Earns Game Puck, Game Recap, Video Highlights, Costello Post Game Comments, Early ECHL Observations and More

The Allen Americans bounced back from their opening night loss in Tulsa with a 5-3 win in Wichita last night before a crowd of 5875 at INTRUST Bank Arena. Allen played shorthanded with just 15 skaters instead of the allotted 17, as Spencer Asuchak (lower leg injury) and Jackson Leppard (immigration issue) were behind the bench in street clothes.

- With just eight forwards in the lineup, Jared Bethune, who can play both forward and defense, moved from the blue-line to forward. With Allen short forwards, defensemen Kris Myllari and Colton Saucerman stepped up big time. Here is a recap:

  • Myllari scored the first goal of the game
  • Saucerman scored the second Allen goal on the power play with one second remaining in the first period.
  • Saucerman scored the game winning goal
  • Combined, Myllari and Saucerman had five points (3G, 2A)

-  Allen got the good start they were looking for when Myllari scored at the 4:09 mark of the first period and the Americans never trailed the rest of the game. Allen led 2-1 after the first period and 4-1 after the second period. A couple of power play goals by Wichita in the third period gave them hope, but the Thunder never got closer than a two goal deficit.

- Goal scorers for Allen were Kris Myllari (1), Colton Saucerman (1&2), Zach Pochiro (2) and Colton Hargrove (1). Liam Finlay, Hank Crone and Justin Young each had two assists.

 CHAD COSTELLO COACH'S CORNER

- One of the things you learn very quickly when talking to coach Costello, which I have done frequently since he took over as coach and general manager, is he doesn't like the focus on himself, it is all about the team. Last night was a big deal, earning his first win as a professional head coach, but I was sure if I didn't ask, Costello would not even bring it up, he would talk about the win and the team effort. With that in mind my first question was, I know it is never about you, but I hope you got the game puck or some other remembrance of your first win as a pro coach? As you would expect, Costello's answer was short, sweet and understated as all he wanted to talk about was the team effort. For the record his response, "Thank you Barry, the boys got the puck and presented it to me."

- There was no shortage of words when talking about the team. Here are his comments:

  • "Our will to win and buy into the team first was why we won the game tonight."
  • "Everyone contributed and we had great goaltending."
  • "Our leadership is awesome this season and they all lead by example."
  • "Our team speed both on offense and defense was more evident tonight than in Tulsa."
  • "I told the guys the team that sticks together and improves the fastest will have the upper hand, so we will concentrate on the process of improving."
  • "We played shorthanded (because of penalties) too often tonight. I like that we play hard, but we also need to play smart."
  • "We showed a lot of character tonight, I am just really proud of the boys.''
  • "We need to get healthy. I will give the guys Sunday and Monday off so we can heal up and practice at game speed."
  • "When we have our full lineup we will be hard to beat."

OTHER COMMENTS

- After just two days of the 2022-23 season, every team in the Mountain Division has lost a game with the exception of Idaho, who is 2-0.

- With three points last night, Colton Saucerman is alone at the top of the ECHL points standings for defensemen. Colton has four points (2G, 2A) in two games. Suacerman and rookie Liam Finlay are tied for the team lead in points (4).

- My friend Matt Harding from Field Pass Hockey, who I have worked with the past decade, just posted his predictions for ECHL division champions, playoff teams and Kelly Cup champion. Have to say there are more than a few surprises in his predictions:

  • You can't call Matt a homer as he lives in Wichita and is a long time Thunder fan, but predicts Wichita will miss the playoffs.
  • He also gives coach Costello no respect as a first year coach, predicting Allen will miss the playoffs.
  • His Mountain Division champ is Rapid City, with Utah, Idaho and Kansas City making the playoffs.
  • Matt's most surprising pick is Fort Wayne to win the Kelly Cup. Wonder if Matt is rethinking his choice after the Komets got beat 7-5 by Indy on Friday and 7-2 by Cincinnati on Saturday.

In all seriousness, Matt has done a great job covering the ECHL (CHL before that) and knows more about the league than any writer I know. We will see how things turnout in April. As for my predictions, Allen will make the playoffs and Newfoundland will win the Kelly Cup. Here is Matt's story with all of his predictions and rationale. https://fieldpasshockey.com/picking-the-2023-kelly-cup-playoff-field-and-champion/

- I will do my annual story on Thanksgiving in predicting what teams will make the playoffs and it happens to be statistically very accurate. It goes like this, historically about 80% of the teams in playoff positions on Thanksgiving Day will make the playoffs. That means with the exception of just three or four teams, the playoff teams will be decided in just over as month. Good reason for your favorite team to get off to a great start.

DID YOU KNOW: Some very early ECHL observations:

- Home teams went 6-8 last night.

- South Carolina is 2-0, outscoring its opponent 13-3.

- Fort Wayne is 0-2, giving up 14 goals in 2 games.

- Average attendance is 5529, up 1594 per game from 2021-22.

- Alex Wideman (Indy) is points leader with 7 points (2G, 5A) in two games.

- Colton Saucerman (Allen) leads all defensemen with four points (2G, 2A) in two games.

Allen Comeback Falls Short in 4-3 Loss to Tulsa, Game Recap, Video Highlights, Costello Comments, Allen vs Wichita Preview and More

It was a disappointing season opening game loss for Allen last night as the Americans lost in Tulsa to the Oilers by a score of 4-3, before a league high attendance of 12,950 at the BOK Center. The attendance was double the next highest attendance among the eight games played in the ECHL last night.

- Allen fell behind early (4:24 of the first period) and spent the rest of the game trying to catch up. Tulsa took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission, but the Americans got the equalizer 24 seconds into the second period (Hank Crone). The Oilers responded and took a 2-1 lead into the second intermission and extended the lead to 3-1, scoring 14 seconds into the third period. To their credit, Allen fought back with goals at 4:27 (Liam Finlay) and 10:12 (Zach Pochiro) to tie the score 3-3. A delay of game penalty by Allen a couple of minutes later proved to be the difference. It took Tulsa just five seconds into the power play to score the game winner and make the final score 4-3.

- What didn't work well for Allen last night?

  • They gave up the first goal of the game. Teams that scored first went 6-1-1 last night.
  • Allen managed just four shots in the first period, were out shot in all three periods and had the fewest shots (21) of the 16 teams that played last night.
  • Allen was 1-6 on the power play and could not convert on a long (1:38) 5-on-3 power play.
  • Too many odd rushes/breakaways.

- What did work well for Allen?

  • The team worked hard throughout the game, coming back from 1-0 and 3-1 deficits.
  • Allen was outshot 30-21 for the game, but was the better team in the third period. A third of Allen's 21 shots came in the last half of the third period.
  • Rookies Liam Finlay and Hank Crone each scored a goal and had several other grade A opportunities last night. They were the leading scorers in Allen's preseason game and it looks like they will be a big part of Allen's offense.

CHAD COSTELLO COACH'S COMMENTS

  • "It took us too long to find our game tonight."
  • "I saw some positives as we showed we have comeback capabilities and we had a chance to win the game."
  • "We had some chances where we needed to shoot the puck."
  • "This game gives us a lot to build on for sure."
  • "We need to do a better job of holding onto the puck, so we can utilize our skill."
  • "We will have a good opportunity to bounce back tomorrow in Wichita."
  • "We got a couple of guys banged up tonight, will see how they are in the morning."

ALLEN VS WICHITA PREVIEW

- Allen went on this road trip with every healthy player on the roster (19), so no extras with the expansion  by one of player for each game this season (17 skaters plus 2 goalies). Jackson Leppard didn't play last night so the Americans played short one skater. Tommy Daniels mentioned on his broadcast that Leppard would not play in either game this weekend and it was a non injury issue. My guess is something came up regarding his immigration that didn't come to light until the team was already headed to Tulsa or it was an issue that could not be resolved until the team returns to Allen. The bottom line is the team will be short at least one skater tonight in Wichita and possibly more if any of the banged up players have to sit out.

- Logan Flodell will get the start in goal tonight. His ECHL stats last season, playing in South Carolina (6 games) and Reading (13 games) include a record of 12-5-1 with a GAA of 2.33 and save percentage of .918. He is Allen's only assigned player from Ottawa.

- Wichita did not play last night so the game tonight against Allen is the first game of the season for the Thunder. The Americans have always played well against Wichita going all the way back to the CHL days. In the last five seasons the Americans record against the Thunder is 33-15-4-2. In games played in Wichita, Allen's record is 14-7-2-2.

- Allen has a league low of just one assigned NHL/AHL player. By my count, Wichita has six assigned players which is a big advantage.

- Here is the game preview issued by the Wichita Thunder:  https://www.wichitathunder.com/en/news/wichita-opens-season-tonight-at-home-vs-allen

OTHER COMMENTS

- There is a full slate of ECHL games on tap tonight with all 28 teams in action. Here is the link to the  ECHL Today with a preview of all 14 games:  https://www.echl.com/en/news/2022/10/echl-today-oct-22

- The ECHL got off to a good start from an attendance perspective last night, led by the huge crowd in Tulsa. The eight games last night drew 46,616 fans, an average of 5827 per game.

DID YOU KNOW: Reviewing ECHL transactions for every day back to October 7th, here are some facts on the number of NHL/AHL players assigned to ECHL teams. These numbers may not be 100% accurate but they are very close.

- The average number of players assigned to each team is just over six.

- All 28 ECHL teams have at least one player assigned.

- Allen is the only team with just one player assigned
.
- Teams with 3 or 4 players assigned (next lowest after Allen) include Toledo, Maine, Ft. Wayne, Cincinnati, Kalamazoo, Tulsa and Orlando.

- As usual, Newfoundland leads the pack with 16 players assigned.

- Teams with 9 or 10 players assigned (next highest after Newfoundland) include Savannah, Adirondack, Jacksonville, Trois Rivières, Worcester, Indy and Rapid City.

Let the Season Begin, 2022-23 Roster, Chad Costello Comments, On Ice Leaders Named, Line Combinations, Defensive Pairings, Historical Opening Day Results and More

Opening day has finally arrived for the Allen Americans as they head to Tulsa this to take on the Tulsa Oilers (7:05 pm CDT). If you are counting it was 174 days ago Allen played its last game, a disappointing 6-3 home loss to Rapid City in the first round of the Kelly Cup playoffs.

- Much has happened since the end of last season, most importantly Chad Costello retired as a player to become coach and general manager of the Americans. I have met with Costello almost every week since he was selected to his new position and there is no doubt it has been a sharp learning curve, not so much in assessing talent and recruiting but all of the rules, regulations, paperwork and administrative issues he never dealt with as a player. With help from the Allen front office and ECHL league office, Costello is ready to go for opening night. If you haven't seen the story about Costello's transition from player to coach written by Rick Gosselin, it is a must read. Here is the link: https://rickgosselin.com/minor-league-hockey-legend-moves-behind-the-bench

- The opening day rosters for all 28 ECHL teams were released yesterday. Allen has 21 players on its roster which is the fewest in the ECHL.According to Elite Prospects, no other team has fewer than 23 players and two teams have 28 (Orlando and South Carolina). How does this happen? The first step is the number of players on the active roster. It can be a maximum of 21 players (for first month and then reduces to 20 for the remainder of the season) but they must fit under the salary cap. Allen could only fit 19 under the salary cap and then could have two players on reserve for a total of 21. An unlimited number of players can be placed on the 14-day injured reserve. Allen has no players on the IR but 20 of 28 teams have put players on IR with Orlando having the most with five. Here is the ECHL press release with all of the opening day rosters:  https://www.echl.com/en/news/2022/10/echl-announces-season-opening-rosters

- So Allen starts the season with 19 players on the active roster and two on reserve. The two on reserve are forwards Marcel Godbout and Stephen Baylis who are out with injuries. The travel roster for the trip to Tulsa will be the 19 players on the active roster.

- I attended practice yesterday and it is clear this team will play with pace all over the ice. There is a lot of speed, especially with the young players that were brought in, but fans will notice Costello's emphasis on quick transitions from defense to offense.

- What is the makeup of this 2022-23 Allen team of 21 players.

  • 11 Canadian players
  • 10 US Players
  • 1786 ECHL games - 15 have ECHL experience led by Asuchak (418), Combs (280), Pochiro (279)
  • 562 AHL games - eight have AHL experience led by Hargrove (259), Combs (162), Asuchak (64)
  • 6'0" average height - ranked 15th from the tallest
  • 194 average weight - ranked as 9th heaviest
  • 26.57 average age - oldest team in the ECHL

- The are many players that will provide leadership in the Allen locker room this season. Most of the players on the team have worn a letter during their junior and/or college careers. The on ice leadership for the 2022-23 season will have Spencer Asuchak as the captain and four players sharing the role of alternate captain (two per game). Those wearing the "A" will be Jack Combs, Colton Hargrove, Kris Myllari and Colton Saucerman. Two of them will wear the "A" at home and two on the road and they will then switch on January 20 (jersey reversal day).

-  Allen has eight ECHL rookies on the roster. Several have pro experience (SPHL, Europe) in leagues that games don't count for rookie status in the ECHL.

- Looking at past stats is useless in a game preview given both Allen and Tulsa have very different teams this season. Allen did beat the Oilers 5-1 in its only preseason but that doesn't translate very well. The Americans record against the Oilers over the last five seasons was 23-21-4-0 including 12-11-3-0 in Tulsa.

- Based on practice and discussions with coach Costello the lines and defensive pairings for the game will look something like this, in no particular order.

  • Leppard-Asuchak-Young
  • Crone-Hargrove-Robidoux/Durham
  • Combs-Finlay-Pochiro

Defensive Pairings

  • Mylarri-Saucerman
  • Skelly-Albano
  • Grissom/Bethune-Gagnon

CHAD CHAT WITH COACH COSTELLO

"We will leave for Tulsa at 12:30 pm and drive straight to the rink, stopping along the way for coffee if we have time."

"Both goalies will get a start this weekend. Luke Peressini will be in goal tonight, Logan Flodell get the start tomorrow (Saturday) in Wichita."

"Zach Pochiro will be a full participant in our leadership group, I just didn't have enough A's to pass out. Zach will be in all of our leadership meetings and will wear an "A' if we are ever short.

"I am nervous at home sometimes when I think of all that needs to be done but when I get the the rink all I feel is excited."

"I have so much belief in our group. They have worked so hard to come together on and off the ice. They deserve a good start to the season, so I hope we can get a couple of wins this weekend."

"I expect we will get additional players assigned from Belleville in the next couple of weeks."

OTHER COMMENTS

- Former Allen Americans players are on 20 different ECHL teams based on opening day rosters. Here is a list of former players that will start the season on reserve or injured reserve:

  • Gavin Gould - Injured Reserve (South Carolina)
  • Garrett Klotz - Injured Reserve (Rapid City)
  • Josh Winquist - Reserve (Fort Wayne)
  • Nolan Kneen - Reserve (Florida)
  • Justin Kapelmaster - Reserve (Reading)
  • Josh Thrower - Reserve (Atlanta)
  • Kyle Neuber - Reserve (Florida)

- If you are attending the game in Tulsa tonight or plan to watch it on FloHockey, here are some Allen players to watch:

  • #7 Colton Hargrove - A Dallas native who came out of retirement after becoming friends with Costello as they traveled to 3ICE tournaments this summer. Tonight will be Hargrove's first ever ECHL game as he spent his first four pro seasons in the AHL (259 games) and then two years in Europe before retiring. A big strong player who is hard to get off the puck. If you are an admirer of the small details that make players excel, keep an eye on #7.
  • #15 Liam Finlay - Finlay had three assists in Allen's preseason and is fast and quick. Despite being a small player, elite prospects shows him tied for the shortest player (5'7") and fourth lightest (154 pounds) player in the ECHL, Finlay has a knack for getting to the tough areas of the ice. He has a combination of speed and quickness that allows him to get in front of the net. He is also durable, playing in every game (118 straight) his last three seasons in Denver. An ECHL rookie, Liam played two seasons in Europe right out of college before joining Allen this season.
  • #67 Hank Crone - Crone had a goal and two assists in Allen's preseason game. Another small quick guy (5'9" 160 lbs) full of confidence. Tonight will be his first pro game. At Northern Michigan University last season, Crone had 44 points (13G, 31A) in 32 games.

DID YOU KNOW: If you are a long time follower of the Allen Americans you will undoubtedly remember some of these opening night games from the past. The Allen Americans all time opening night record is not that good at just 7-6. The Americans are 4-4 at home and a 3-2 on the road. No matter when you started following the Americans, opening night games always bring back memories. Here is a recap of all 13 opening night games.

2009-10 - In the first game in team history Allen won 1-0 in Arizona. Christian Gaudet scored the only goal of the game late in the first period assisted by Bruce Graham and Nino Musitelli. Charlie Effinger was in goal for Allen and Chris Whitley was on the bench. Allen started on the road the first season because the Allen Event Center was not completed. The Americans played their first seven games in franchise history on the road. They returned to Allen after those first seven games 5-1-0-1.

2010-11 - Allen opens at home against Texas, scores three goals (Alexandre Quesnel, Dustin Donaghy, Judd Blackwater) in the first four minutes of the game and coasts to a 5-2 win.

2011-12 - Allen opens at home against Tulsa and gets beat 4-1 with Jim McKenzie getting the Americans only goal with just over a minute left in the game. Most notable in that game was a Gordie Howe hat trick by Tulsa's Gary Steffes who had a goal, an assist and a fight with Allen's Scott Langdon.

2012-13 - Allen opens the season at home and shuts out Arizona 4-0. Scott Howes had two goals in the game. The other goal scorers were Adam Pineault and Darryl Bootland. Steve Silverthorn was in goal and the backup was a rookie by the name of Aaron Dell. Dell would play sparingly the first few weeks of the season but eventually take over the starting role and lead the Americans to their first championship. What ever happened to that Dell guy?

2013-14 - Allen opened the season in Wichita and beat the Thunder 4-3 in a shootout. Allen had a 3-0 lead midway in the game on two goals by Darryl Bootland and one by Jonathan Lessard but let Wichita come back. The hero in the shootout was Kale Kerbashian who scored in the fifth round to win the game.

2014-15 - The worst opening night ever for Allen as they opened at home and got beat by Tulsa 9-6. Greger Hanson was the lone bright spot for Allen with a whopping 11 shots on goal, four points and a hat trick. Aaron Dell was in goal for the Americans and gave up seven of the nine goals. Whatever happened to that Dell guy? Actually, it was Dell's only regulation loss in the 12 games he played for Allen that season. By the end of January he was in the AHL on his way to the NHL.

2015-16 - Another opening night loss as the Quad City Mallards came to the Allen Event Center and beat the Americans 2-1. Allen's lone goal was scored by Garrett Clarke with assists going to Justin Courtnall and goalie Joel Rumpel. You didn't see those three in the boxscore very often let alone on the same play.

2016-17 - It was an opening night win as Allen was at home and beat Missouri 6-3. Kale Kerbashian had two goals and Riley Gill was peppered with 47 shots.

2017-18 - It was an opening night like no other as the Americans went on the road and beat the Rapid City Rush 8-3. The eight goals is the most ever scored by the Americans in a season opener. The five goal margin of victory is the largest ever in a season opener and the first goal of the season was a shorthanded goal scored by Jonathan Lessard. Lessard and Zach Pochiro each had two goals for the Americans.

2018-19 - Allen opened the season in Kansas City and took it on the chin with a 5-1 loss while being out shot 43-21. The game was tied 1-1 after the first period as Casey Pierro-Zabotel scored the Americans only goal of the game. Over the last two periods the Mavericks out shot Allen 32-14 and outscored the Americans 4-0. The #1 star of the game with a goal and two assists for the Mavericks was Jared VanWormer who would go on to become captain of the Allen Americans.

2019-20 - Allen opened the season at home against Rapid City and came away with a 3-2 overtime victory. Jordan Topping tied the score 2-2 with 91 seconds left in the game and then got the game winning goal at 2:58 of overtime.

2020-21 -  What was unique about this season is the opening game didn't take place until December 12. Allen opened the season on the road in Tulsa and lost 4-3. The Americans scored first on a Jake McGrew goal at the 2:24 mark of the first period. Allen fell behind 3-1 early in the second period but scored two quick goals (Jake McGrew & Zane Franklin) to tie the score 3-3 going into the third period. Tulsa scored the only goal of the third period to make the final 4-3. C.J. Motte took the loss for the Americans.

2021-22 - It is hard to forget opening night on October 23 2021. Allen opened at home against Wichita suffering its worst shutout ever (7-0) and it was in front of a big opening night crowd of 5443. Allen was 0-6 on the power play while Wichita was 3-5. Goalie Alex Gravel had to play the entire game for the Americans because Allen had to use an EBUG (Thomas Hodges).
