Have All the ECHL Playoffs Teams Already Been Decided? - The Thanksgiving Hypothesis

I am heading to North Dakota in the morning for a week of pheasant hunting, so this will be the last blog post until the 11th. Wish me luck in the cold and snow. The first morning will be -3 with a high of 10, but after that the temperatures will moderate (20's and 30s), but it is always windy.

- This is always a fun blog to write each season and track how accurate it is come playoff time. I have had some success with this hypothesis, but also some spectacular fails. None more memorable than two years ago when I wrote this about the Americans, "Allen is in last place in the division with a .393 point percentage and is the only team out of contention for a playoff spot." That commentary had me eating crow chili in April as Allen finished second in the Mountain Division and advanced to the second round of the Kelly Cup playoffs.

- It is time for my "Thanksgiving Playoff Hypothesis" blog which predicts the 16 ECHL playoff teams based on the standings as of today. No need to worry any more, the fate of your favorite team is already decided. A little overstated but not by much. I have talked about this in the past after reading numerous articles about the history in the NHL, where data proves somewhere between 75% - 80% of playoff teams are already decided by now. Here is one of the more informative stories about this subject from the Hockey News several years ago: http://www.thehockeynews.com/news/article/out-of-the-playoffs-december-1-done-like-thanksgiving-dinner

- It is strange to think with just over 20% of the ECHL season complete, you can predict who will be in the playoffs with close to 80% accuracy. Nothing ventured, nothing gained so here are the playoff teams strictly by the numbers plus where I think the "Thanksgiving Playoff Hypothesis" might be wrong. The numbers in parentheses are the current point percentages. I use point percentage to determine the top four teams rather than points because of the difference in games played which varies from 14 to 21. Here are your 2024-25 Kelly Cup playoff teams.

NORTH DIVISION

  • 1. Wheeling (.781)
  • 2. Trois Riviéres (.714)
  • 3. Norfolk (.694)
  • 4. Adirondack (.531)

The top two in the North Division are pretty much a lock. Wheeling is #2 in the league in points percentage and Trois Riviéres is #4.Worcester, Reading and Maine all have point percentages below .500 and none have won more than three games in the last 10. History would say the top four now will be the top four at the end of the season.

SOUTH DIVISION

  • 1. Florida (.806)
  • 2. South Carolina (.750)
  • 3. Jacksonville (.625)
  • 4. Greenville (.594)

The South Division has five teams with a points percentage above .500 and in playoff territory. The top two are locked in for the playoffs. Florida is the top team in the league and South Carolina is ranked #3 in point percentage. While none of the teams below the playoff cut line are out of the picture for the playoffs, they may struggle to make the list. The three teams predicted to not make the playoffs, Savannah (.556), Orlando (.450) and Atlanta (.421) all have losing records over the last 10 games. Savannah got off to a great start winning six of its first seven games but is 3-6-0-0 in the last nine. The Ghost Pirates have more NHL/AHL contracted players than any team in the league, so their fate is dependent on what happens with the affiliate throughout the season. Orlando made the playoffs last season and could make a run, but it doesn't look good based on the Solar Bears home record of 3-6-1-0. Atlanta began last season winning eight straight games, which is #2 all-time to start a season. Since that eight game winning streak, covering the end of last season and the beginning of this season, the Gladiators record is 21-54-3-2. The bottom line is the top four in the South now should be the four advancing to the playoffs.

CENTRAL DIVISION

  • 1.Toledo (.684)
  • 2. Fort Wayne (.656)
  • 3. Iowa (.618)
  • 4. Indy (.567)

There is quite a gap from the top four teams and the bottom three who are all below .500. Bloomington (.471), Kalamazoo (.382) and Cincinnati (.233) bring up the rear. Fort Wayne is back in the playoff picture after missing the playoffs last season. Cincinnati was the top team in the league two years ago at this point (.821), but can already make plans for the summer which will come in April for the Cyclones. Bloomington is the closest team to cracking the top four, but as a first year team, loaded with rookies, and limited help from its affiliate it will be difficult. Once again the top four look like the playoff teams come Kelly Cup time.

MOUNTAIN DIVISION

  • 1. Tulsa (.694)
  • 2. Kansas City (.632)
  • 3. Idaho (.583)
  • 4. Tahoe (.563)

Things are not going according to Hoyle in the Mountain Division. Kansas City and Idaho dominated the division last season and it was expected to be the case in 2024-25 as well. While both teams are in the top four, they have not been dominate as expected. They have matching 5-4-1-0 records over the last 10 games. The surprises have been Tulsa, who is leading the the division and the new franchise, Tahoe, holding its own. The Mountain Division is the only ECHL division with eight teams, so four will miss the plays. Of all of the ECHL divisions the Mountain is the most likely to see one of the bottom four teams make the playoffs. Six teams in the division have point percentages above .500. Those below the playoff cut line are Allen (.531) and Wichita (.500). Rapid City (.389) and Utah (.353) bring up the rear. The team playing the best of those below the playoff line is Allen with a 6-2-2-0 record over the last 10 games. The unanswered question is whether the new franchise, Tahoe, can hold on to fourth place. Tahoe is not the typical new ECHL franchise. The Knight Monsters are the third oldest team in the league with 15 players having a total 800 games of AHL experience. They are not over reliant on rookies (7) and have a veteran presence (3) and a decent number of NHL/AHL contracted players (6). Once again it looks like the top four right now will be the playoff teams in April.

- History says if you are more than five points out of the fourth playoff spot at this point the chance of making it into the playoffs is slim to none. That is bad news for Cincinnati who is already 10 points out of a playoff spot, Utah who is nine points out of a playoff spot and Rapid City who is seven points out of a playoff spot.

- Historically, teams more than five points ahead of the final playoff spot in the division at this point can start selling playoff tickets as they rarely miss the playoffs. Teams in this category include Florida, South Carolina, Wheeling, Norfolk and Toledo.

- The bottom line is most playoffs teams are already decided, but as important it is to make the playoffs, it is a myth that once you make the ECHL playoffs any team can win the Kelly Cup. In the last 20 years the Kelly Cup champion has finished outside of the top five during the regular season just four times and two of those were Florida the last two seasons. Here is where the Kelly Cup champion has finished in the regular season since 2005:

  • 2024 - Florida (8th)
  • 2023 - Florida (11th)
  • 2022 - Florida (3rd)
  • 2021 - Fort Wayne (5th)
  • 2020 - No Playoffs
  • 2019 - Newfoundland (3rd)
  • 2018 - Colorado (4th)
  • 2017 - Colorado (3rd)
  • 2016 - Allen (5th)
  • 2015 - Allen (2nd)
  • 2014 - Alaska - (1st)
  • 2013 - Reading (2nd)
  • 2012 - Florida (7th)
  • 2011 - Alaska (1st)
  • 2010 - Cincinnati (5th)
  • 2009 - South Carolina (4th)
  • 2008 - Cincinnati (1st)
  • 2007 - Idaho (6th)
  • 2006 - Alaska (1st)
  • 2005 - Trenton (5th)

- Keep in mind this is all done in fun and I will definitely revisit it at the end of the season to see how many of the 16 teams in playoff positions now, will in fact make the playoffs. If your favorite team is currently out the playoffs, remember even with 80% accuracy, three teams currently on the outside of a playoffs looking in will make the playoffs.

DID YOU KNOW: The list of ECHL teams that have won multiple championships is not very long when you consider the league has been around since 1988 and there have been something like 60 different  teams depending on how you count. Here are the nine teams that have won multiple ECHL championships with the winning coaches in parenthesis:

  • Florida Everblades - 2012, 2022, 2023, 2024  (Greg Poss, Brad Ralph, Brad Ralph, Brad Ralph)
  • Alaska Aces - 2006, 2011, 2014  (Davis Payne, Rob Murray, Rob Murray)
  • South Carolina Stingrays - 1997, 2001, 2009  (Rick Vaive, Rick Adduono, Jared Bednar)
  • Hampton Roads Admirals - 1991, 1992, 1998  (John Brophy)
  • Colorado Eagles - 2017, 2018  (Aaron Schneekloth)
  • Allen Americans - 2015, 2016  (Steve Martinson)
  • Cincinnati Cyclones - 2008, 2010  (Chuck Weber)
  • Idaho Steelheads - 2004, 2007  (John Oliver, Derek Laxdal)
  • Toledo Storm - 1993, 1994  (Chris McSorley)

Add Crone, Hargrove, Jacobs etc and you’ll see that between firing Costy and this bonehead not reaching out to players, we have systematically destroyed our roster.

      Idiots. LJ and BJ.

  6. Marco being released for a guy that has a 5.10 GAA is pretty comical. This has to be one of the dumbest moves I’ve seen in a hot minute. This guy knows nothing & is as lazy as they come. We can all figure out that, this is his NHL & is blowing it up before our eyes yet again. BJ this note is to you, you’re not a fake it till you make it guy with these kind of moves. Get off your high horse. It’s the ECHL. You’re not better than the guy next to you. Figure it the fuck out!

    5. Only reason for this is Tucson telling Allen that Wells will be reassigned, BUT .. Wells likely isn't coming back soon, and even if he was, why trade Marco for a 2 game 5.10 GAA goalie? Damn delusional BJ. You've lost your marbles.
      LJ - fix this mess.

    6. LJ won’t, does not know anything about the game and the fans. Just self image.

Met plenty of coaches and club executives in many teams and leagues and he is the absolute bottom of the bunch. The likelihood of him getting a second chance @ ECHL is none. He cant even give us the communication we would like, which is the 101.

      Delete
  8. Why is BJ allowed to play ECHL fantasy hockey when he has no qualifications to be a GM? It’s almost as if he wants to intentionally alienate the fan base (and the team) @ this point!

Come on LJ. If you can’t make the decisions to change, please get someone who is qualified to make them. You bought a team that had tangible value and that value is going to decline if you lose the fans.

    1. Daily limit is 3, possession limit is 12 some so with my hunting buddy of over 60 years we hope to come home with 24 pheasants. Late season pheasant hunting is so fun, especially if there is fresh snow, however, the pheasants are so smart after being chased for two months. We will see a lot of pheasants but getting at them can be a challenging for two guys pushing 80. Luckily my buddy has a young black lab (18 months) to help out, if we can keep up with him. Haha

  20. Releasing Constantini is by far one of the dumbest moves made by Loser Adams. Adams thinks his s—t don’t stink because of his arrogance and blindness to real success in hockey. I don’t want to hear crap about affiliations or other garbage. Getting a loser backup to loser Thornton is almost icing on the cake to make me not renew my 4 seats. If he and the owners aren’t committed to success and winning then I’m not committed to them.

The fact they got rid of Red Kindgdom and replaced it with a lame remake of a horrible Beatles song and have an intro with what looks like crumpled foil and crappy imagery is embarrassing and while relation to hockey winning, it was a fan favorite.

Lastly, BJ was an a—hole at a postgame
Press conference we went to. What a self righteous plick.

    Just disgusting.

  21. While maybe not a popular take on this blog, I had season tickets for Steve Martinson teams (outside of Allen, mostly in San Diego) and he was a proven winner. A tough ending here but he should come back and Allen would win. He has won championships and rebuilt sad teams every where he goes. He’s tough but a winner. Sadly the prior owner ran him out but time for a comeback. Adams couldn’t even hold Martinson’s jock. We need him back (yeah, pipe dream but better than this nightmare Loser Adams who releases a fan favorite AND WINNER in Costantini. I wish Marco all the best).

    1. Ditto here, including when he was playing in San Diego. He got pushed out because one of his x-players married the owners daughter. They never won after that and then folded.
When they practiced at the Krok Center, where I was working, we always talked. I was also lucky to play on a military team who played the Gulls Alumni, most of whom could still skate circles around most guys. Was fun. It was the first time BJ MacPherson was able to get on the ice after an Idaho asshole broke his neck. I still hate the Steelheads!

  22. Why exactly was Marco let go?
I'm yet to hear any sound reasoning.

    ReplyDelete
  23. BJ ( Biggest Joke) is a narcissist with no proven history of being a successful coach. His resume proves that. He’s a joke. The players loathe him too.

He let Marco go because he didn’t like his personality. Yep that’s the reason. A great goalie humble quiet player and you cut him. That’s why he won’t talk about it, because it’s a stupid reason. In addition to that he’s screwing him over further so he can’t be picked up for a certain amount of time.
Glad Marco told you where to go!
    Prick unprofessional move.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Marco was probably let go as part of the plan to complete the total decimation this team. He was here last year so I am surprised he was ever re-signed at all. Surprised Spencer is still here as well. You can tell they want to erase all history and tradition of this franchise: Didn't want to play Red, Red, Red after goals when the season started, dumped a fan favorite in the amazing Red Kingdom that established whose house this was and excited the fans (a wonderful tradition to start), replaced it with a crappy Beatles song (we wouldn't have to "Come Together" had we not been completely separated from the beginning), exile almost all of the former good players that fans loved in order to bring in a bunch of nobodies and a loser coaching staff. Now, Myles and LJ feuding over what to do, it's his name and money so why he can't just tell her to sit back and shut up is beyond me. This would be like someone buying the Cowboys and changing the team colors to green and purple, throwing the Super Bowl trophies in the dumpster, and erasing all history that existed before their arrival.
I guess LJ wants her name all over it, maybe her face on the jerseys (?), and all history of success removed (I am surprised the Championship banners and retired number banners are still hanging). Isn't one reason you buy a team like this because of the history and traditions that come with it? Maybe total decimation will make it easier to sneak the team out of town in the middle of the night and move it elsewhere?

Without a deep playoff run, my 4 tickets will not be renewed either. And not just because they are a bunch of losers, but because they are making an obvious attempt to destroy what good there has been for so long. And by losers, I mean the owners and administrators, you can't blame the players. Most of the players only problem is lack of experience and maybe a little less talent than needed in this league... but they play hard, play their hearts out, and aren't afraid to get in and scrap.... any winning accomplished has been in spite of ownership, management, and coaching, not because of them.

    1. Myles and LJ are in disagreement?

    2. I am admittedly worried they are tanking the team on purpose so take the team out of Allen. I need to find some funding to buy this team. It doesn’t take much to hire proven winners if you want to win. It’s difficult to be this inept and destruction is purposeful.

      Delete
    3. To clarify, it’s not difficult to win if you set your ego and arrogance aside. Assuming you truly want to win.

  25. I haven’t coached in the ECHL but I could certainly stumble into 5-6 wins in this many games.

Joe has always hated Allen and our coaches going back to when Marty was the coach. He’s a tiny man with a large ego. That’s why majority of our team didn’t return bc he told the Americans that anyone who taught or spoke out about Costello being fired to not call them and couldn’t sign them. He’s an asshole. He purposely destroyed the team and presented to the jack’s that he knows everything and unfortunately they listened

I'm a regular fan, go to games, watch the away games on Flo so I only hear him 50% of the time.
I don't see Allen grooming anyone, and the guys that occasionally fill during the home games - Tyler and some other guy are young and have a long way to go.
Unless Allen invests in the talent, and has a transition plan, we have Tommy.
I dont know Tommy, and I can't speak if he has pissed people off, but he's far from terrible. He provides a lot of info about the team that otherwise wouldn't be known, yeah he makes a mistake here and there, and gets a little uber excited when opposing teams score, but be thankful we have someone. 1. Last night used my first season ticket of the year. Met some old friends, saw some of the a$$holes too. At least I didn't have to see the head a$$holes.
Decided to go and see a team we don't play dozens of times a year. Rooted for Tahoe and they came through.
I took a photo of the other side from my seat at the red line, couple of rows up from the penalty box, sections 102-107 and counted 113 people in the stands, behind the net on the Americans side I saw maybe 10 people.
Sloppy play throughout most of the game, puck bounces horrendous, Americans defenseman all alone at the blue line has an open shot to the net and shoots it 8 feet wide of it. Stunning. No matter what dipshit BJ wants to say about SOG I saw no issue with the count.
I see they have pizza again, no idea how good or the cost. Hard to be interested in food.

  34. The gauntlet of teams we face have started. Back to reality BJ your eyes are about to be wide open. Since you traded Cos and overworking Thornton it’s going to sting. Hate it for the boys but hope it makes your exit quicker.

  35. Anyone with Flo needs to listen to the pregame interview with BJ.
This guy can't even talk properly ... he fkn mumbles.
Think I am joking? Listen to the interview.
    You can't even understand him.
If we can't understand him, then how the f&%* can the players.

I'm not sure if its just a game or what, but you can't understand him.
If we think Tommy is bad, BJ is 100 times worse.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Those who defend Tommy should talk to those who have worked with him, now and in years past. You would have a much different perspective.

    1. Understood. I posted a comment not defending him, but putting things in perspective from a broadcaster standpoint.
If he is "allegedly" a prick, like accusations have been made at BJ, then that's another matter. I can't comment on that, nor can those not around him or having never worked with him.
Dislike him as a person - fine, but I think we should be reasonable in commenting as it relates to broadcasting.
      My personal thoughts....

    2. Absolutely! Yea you’ll get the truth about him talking to coworkers. He’s not a team player and with throw anyone under the bus to climb his invisible latter. But any negative talk he will complain and comments will be deleted 🤣 bc he knows people see his true colors. If you only really knew you would be disgusted by his behavior

  37. Game Predictions
We lost a great chance to catch Tahoe and create separation with 2 losses at home.
Wichita 3-2 which will further widen the game to catch Wichita.
SOG will be 1.61 x Allen (We need to fix this fast).

Hope I am wrong, but AI says Wichita 3-2 over Allen.

    1. You're going to give up goals and lose games when you're outshot the way the Americans have been.
      No excuses for it.

      35-14 currently .... 2.5 x Allen SOG

    2. And you're going to burn out a goalie.

    1. I hate to wish a firing on anyone but the sooner the better. Some kick ass proven winner like Martinson or some other winner (not a loser or a re-tread, got it LJ?) who can get more from players than they realize and win. You can be an owner but get someone who knows hockey and how to run a hockey team and will hire a rockstar coach.

Let’s salvage the season, maybe get Marco back — someone who can weather the barrage of shots until defense and scoring improves —- and win before it’s too late.

  42. On another note.... do any of you proofread before posting? Or is your grammar and spelling really that atrocious? It is hard to describe someone else as an idiot when your basic writing skills show a low IQ

    1. It shouldn’t be that hard to proof your posts. It’s the same post over and over and over. The owner sucks, AEC sucks, fire everybody, get Costello/Marty back,

    2. Sarcasm or complaining about the same posts? Hmm. Not sure what direction you’re going in.

Maybe because there’s a problem and it needs to be fixed? We need to hammer the owners to get off their asses? Yes they own, but fans pay for it all.

LJ you back from the book tour?

  45. It can’t happen soon enough. It’s really frustrating to watch this destruction. The players, while not always great, aren’t being coached well at all. Game strategy is non-existent. Bad Joke Adams is a puppet for affiliation guidance rather than pushing back at appropriate times. SOG differential is shameful and clearly the defensive coaching strategy is despicable (yes players play but coaching properly is critical). Coaching matters and the “coaching” that is happening is worse than just letting the players play without a coach. Just my thoughts, FWIW (which to the owners, I’m sure won’t matter but should). Open your ears, admit you made a mistake and say “you’re fired!”

Hire a kick-ass, proven winner. Period.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Dear Coach Adam's. Since it looks like we are stuck with you can I bring something to your attention? SHOTS ON YOUR GOAL MATTERS. YOU CAN GIVE UP 20 SHOTS NORE THAN YOU TAKE AND EXPECT TO WIN. PLEASE STOP TREATING IT LIKE IT DOESNT MAKE A DIFFERENCE

  56. Question - How did the Rangers assign a goalie to Tulsa which is a Ducks affiliate? Thanks in advance. Still learning the ins and outs of ECHL affiliations.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Sometimes NHL teams carry to many goalies in their system, & do not have enough room with their immediate affiliates. So they reach out to place that player somewhere. But in this case Boyko played their last season & was on an ECHL deal so he went back to where he was originally playing. But now he’s on a 2-way AHL/ECHL contract.
