Thank You, Thank You, Thank You - A Season to Forget

It seemed like it took forever for this season to come to an end once it was clear Allen was going to finish in last place in the ECHL. Now that the season is over the players will disperse quickly and this team will be gone. While some will return next season, some will retire, some will go to Europe and some will not be invited back, the team I wrote about almost every morning, talked to at practice and watched every game will no longer exist.

- This morning the team will start the year end process of exit interviews, exit physicals, locker stall/equipment clean out and travel home logistics. By midweek players will already be heading for home.

- The day has arrived for the blog to say goodbye to the 2024-25 season and go into the summer hiatus. Today I am taking my proofreader (aka, wife Nancy) on a small ship (50 passenger) adventure starting in Malta and cruising up the eastern coast of Italy. One year ago when I wrote my thank you blog the title was "Thank You, Thank You, Thank You - A Work in Progress." Little did I know what would transpire from the end of last season to the end of this season. I think the best title the year is, "A Season to Forget."

- There are so many people to thank for helping with the blog. It is quite an undertaking to write about the team almost everyday during the season and it does indeed take a village to make it all possible. It seems like as the years go by more and more blog readers help me out with information, ideas for stories, ask questions and let me know they appreciate the work I do. It is hard to put into words my appreciation whether you read the blog every day or are a casual fan that stumbles across my daily musings. It has been my pleasure to meet many of you and your words of encouragement in person, comments at the end of each blog, on Twitter, on Facebook, message boards, in email and texts have been very satisfying and inspiring. Thanks to you, the readers!

- Thanks to Brett Ferguson and his staff (Jordan Dutton, Jeff Fink, Matt Miletich) for always taking the time to talk to me, share information, educate me and answer my text messages at all hours of the day. A special thanks to coach Ferguson for allowing me to stop by his office after every game and every practice to ask questions and talk about the team. It is his openness and trust that has allowed the blog to have information you can't find anywhere else. Thanks also to the players who have never said no to a single request I have made of them for a chat, an interview or a question.

- A special thanks to team president Jonny Mydra for his support this season. He reaches out all of the time to share information and helps publicize the blog. Jonny both seeks and listens to feedback. He is available early in the morning when I am writing the blog and late at night when I am planning the blog. It is nice to know the president of the team supports and reads the blog and lets me know it is appreciated.

- .As most everyone knows the blog is a labor of love for me, not a business. The only reason for its existence is to share stats and information about the Allen Americans with an insider's perspective. Providing information that is hard to get elsewhere. From a meager start in 2012, the blog has reached 2,976,778 unique page views as of this morning. Looking forward to the 3,000,000 milestone which will happen during the off season. The blog reaches people all over the US and Canada as well as the hockey hotbeds in Europe. It proves fans of the Allen Americans are all over the world.

- Tommy Daniels deserves the credit or blame for the blog as I had never given it a thought until he encouraged me to write about the team because I attended so many practices. Tommy has been a great help over the years. I spent the first period on Saturday chatting with Tommy and Maurice Fitzgerald on their broadcast about the season and the past. We reminisced about the championship years and how lucky we have been to be involved in this team.

- When I started the blog the intended audience was Allen fans where I live, a resort style active adult retirement community called Heritage Ranch. It was an inauspicious beginning and it is obvious when looking back I had no idea what I was doing. I thought you might get a laugh from blog #1 and #2. FYI, yes I was that close to a pride of lions on a safari in Zimbabwe!

Blog #1 - Welcome to the Heritage Ranch Allen Americans Fan Club blog. This is a work in progress and hopefully both the content and design will improve over time. I wanted to get the site going as training camp gets underway. It was great to see all of the returning and new players at camp today along with Stars players Ericksson, Fistric, Daley, Robidas, & Bachman. Nice to see Jarret Lukin finally wearing his favorite number #32, so long #40 & #7.

Blog #2 - The Lions  are Ready for Hockey After a Lazy Summer

 - During the off season I will still publish a blog on an as needed basis as new information becomes available. I also have a bucket list of stories to choose from when I get the itch to write over the summer. Everything from the obstacles Allen faced this season, the story of affiliations, it's time to put Riley Gill and Chad Costello in the ECHL Hall of Fame, meet the CUTX Event Center staff and many more.

- If you are on Facebook or Twitter, you can see whenever there is a new post on the blog by liking my page on Facebook at "Allen Americans Blog" or following me on X/Twitter at @allenamericans1.  If you are not on social media, make sure you bookmark Allen Americans Blog and check in periodically. You can also check the Allen Americans website where all of the blogs are posted under the "Team News and Information tab.

DID YOU KNOW: I always end the last blog of the season with this list. Lots of memories good and bad when you look at the games on this list. When you consider only one team has the pleasure of winning the last game of the season, Allen fans are fortunate to have had that experience four times and they all happened at home. Here is the date of the last game played in each season of the Allen Americans  franchise along with the results.

  • May 4, 2010: 4-3 loss at Rapid City in the CHL Presidents' Cup finals

    1. Thank you Barry. None of us deserved the team and season we got. Your self appointed duty to report and moderate an often unruly blog was definitely above and beyond.

Being able to publish middle of the road and stay out of the mud is practically unheard of these days. Stick taps to you good man for fighting the good fight.

Myles, well at least you showed up at the final game to own up.
Been nice to see and hear from your backbone far far earlier this season.

You've long since seen my last money from me, after 9 seasons active stm, i'm done. But still a fan. You say you're here to stay. You say you want to win. I already invested in that Allen team for nearly a decade, then I walked after 2024. Because Joe destroyed what I had invested in.

I'm willing to come back Myles, but you gotta show up and show out first.

  2. As a long time supporter of the team, THANK YOU again for continuing your blog, giving us some insight into what goes on outside of the games we see on the ice! Enjoy your trip with Nancy and a much needed respite from a forgettable season we definitely would like to expunge from our memory.

  3. We all know that one day, you will retire and that will be it for the blog. What a sad day that will be. Clear, concise, and entertaining information all in one place. Knowledge that none of us would have without you. Hopefully, even though you plan on enjoying your summer, you will have a lot of new and exciting information to share before next season gets here. And hopefully, those who can't keep their fingers off the keyboard will, in their drunken state, enjoy what you have to write. Thank you each and every day for keeping us informed, educating some of us, and entertaining us. What a labor it must be but you accomplish it well.

  42. Chad may be a fan favourite, Martinson would be the best fit. Experience, accountability and proven success. Marty can get the players and help turn things around quickly in Allen. Nothing against Chad, but he is still growing and figuring things out behind the bench. If Allen is prepared to accept a few rough years under Costello’s development, then Chad may be a good fit. If you want a proven coach who everyone respects and trusts can bring back a competitive team in short term, Marty is the guy. My choice is Marty. I believe he can bring in talented players to help turn things around next year. Either way having a new coaching staff will be a positive start looking forward to 25/26 season. Happy Easter everyone.

    1. I hate to say this, but Marty is not the answer. Yes he had a good season in the FPHL. He is very smart when it comes to salary cap & numbers. But what was his record the last 3 seasons in Allen? Plus you add 4 more years of “being out of the game” to that 3 years. Tell me how y’all can say he would be a good fit? Then compare Costello’s record to that last 3 seasons, to Marty’s. It’s just a question, not an attack.

      Delete
    2. ^^^^ Bingo! Someone is dialed in.

      Delete
    3. Marty is not the answer.
What Costello achieved in 2 years, transitioning from a player was damn impressive.
What's even more impressive was the turn around in RC this season.

Moronic Zawyer/Joe Ernst were blind as a bat. They had Costello at sub $90k. Dip$hit move to fire him. Could have built a legacy. Myles has had his opportunity to get him back and fix the mess.

      Delete
    4. Marty made the final 4 in his final 3 years in Allen. All 3 of his last seasons they finished with more points than either of Chads 2 seasosn. His strength is actually building a team on the fly that works in his system. He knows how to motivate and how to adapt to what he has.

    5. Marty is old. Good in the mid teen years.
      Costello is young and motivated.

There are reasons it cannot be announced right now.

    3. well at least we know it won't be Ferguson. They wouldn't have to wait to announce that

    4. There is conflicting info on here.
Some say Ferguson has been retained.
Some have said he refused the offer for another role.
      Some have said its Costello.
      Some think its Martinson.
      Some think its someone else.

      I don't think anyone knows.
All will be announced in May.

    13. No, I do know but I cannot divulge everything on here. I never said an announcement was ready to be made, or that it would be announced, other than it will come in May.

    14. I have a great idea to the one that insists there will be this big announcement before May 16th. How about you post something on the official Allen Americans website that says an announcement is coming and maybe we can believe what you are saying. Outside of that you are just one of the many voices that are all saying different things on this blog.

    15. That is a dumb statement.
Why would the club do that?

      Delete
    16. why would the club say they are going to make an announcement? Because it shows they are actually doing something maybe...and it might give some credibility to your statement so it doesn't sound like you're just making stuff up.

      Delete
    17. An announcement that they are making an announcement?
      Surely not....
Sit back, relax and grab the popcorn.

Contracts run for certain periods of time.
If Ferguson walks, that's not an announcement, the contract will simply not be renewed.
If it is someone else, then they will need to wait until that contract expires.
Based on the May 16 comment, I am reading that certain contracts may expire May 15th.

    18. I disagree that is a dumb statement. If the team actually put something on the website it might give some credibility to your statement. Right now you are just another voice in the wind

      Delete
    19. I disagree that you disagree about the other persons comment.
Do you really think a club would put out a statement about a statement? An announcement about an announcement?
Surely our fans have a higher IQ.
Let the club announce it on their schedule.

      WHAT A SECOND HALF
The final three months of the season provided some of the best regular-season entertainment—and success—in recent memory for this proud franchise. After being swept at Kansas City, the Rush flew home on January 19th with a record of 10-20-7. From that point on, the team went 21-12-2, tripling its win total from the midway mark to the finish line. In the Mountain Division, only the first-place Mavericks won more games over that span than the Rush. The offense stepped up a notch with the Blake Bennett-Ryan Wagner-Deni Goure trio putting up insane amounts of points each week, while an improved Matt Radomsky and Connor Murphy delivered tremendous performances in goal.

  76. The ECHL announced on Friday that the League’s Board of Governors has approved the expansion application of Rio Rancho, New Mexico for admittance into the League. The club will begin play in the 2026-27 Season.

REV Entertainment’s Sports Management division will oversee all team operations. The Dallas Stars will serve as hockey operations consultants to REV Entertainment for the launch of the team. REV currently operates two teams in the American Association of Professional Baseball – the Cleburne Railroaders and Kane County Cougars – and previously served as a managing partner for the ECHL’s Allen Americans.

The team’s official name will be determined through a “Name the Team” contest, now open to fans at NMProHockey.com.

“It is with great pleasure that the League welcomes REV Entertainment, and the New Mexico region, to the ECHL as our 31st Member Team, as we progress the growth of the League to align with the National Hockey League and American Hockey League,” said ECHL Commissioner Ryan Crelin. “REV has a proven track record of managing professional sports teams at the highest level, and we are thrilled with their commitment to bring professional hockey back to the state of New Mexico. This expansion speaks to the growth of our game throughout the continent, and will be an exciting addition to our rivalries in the Mountain Division, and a geographic fit for Affiliation development.”

“Today marks a significant milestone for REV Entertainment and the ECHL,” said REV Entertainment President Sean Decker. “We are incredibly excited to bring professional hockey back to New Mexico and to expand the ECHL’s footprint with the league’s 31st Member. The Rio Rancho community has a rich history with the sport, and we look forward to building a team that will be a source of pride for fans across the region. We can’t wait to drop the puck in 2026!”

The New Mexico Professional Hockey Club will begin play in the 2026-27 Season at the Rio Rancho Events Center, a 7,000-seat arena located less than 30 miles from Albuquerque, New Mexico. The arena previously hosted the Central Hockey League’s New Mexico Scorpions from 2006-09 and the North American Hockey League’s New Mexico Mustangs from 2010-12. The venue continues to host sporting events, concerts, and other live entertainment.
