Sticks Down, Wallets Up - ECHL Hockey Hits the Brakes

I am sure many of you have spent the last two days reading everything you can find about the strike that has ground the ECHL to a halt. It is challenging to distinguish fact from fiction and opinion, and I certainly don't have the answers. I am not sure where to start, so this information may be rambling, but here goes.

- In my opinion, the reason both sides are at a stalemate in reaching an agreement on a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) is that the owners have decided their best and final offer is just that, and the financial viability of some teams in the league is at risk. The PHPA, representing the players, feels just as strongly that the owners' offer is not enough. That difference of opinion is what has led to this strike.

- Here is the latest public statement from the ECHL on the negotiations: https://echl.com/CBA

- Here is the public statement from the PHPA on negotiations: https://phpa.com/news/3215

- In addition to working on the agreement for a new CBA, the ECHL teams are in the process of putting together teams to continue playing. From what I understand, these teams could be a combination of NHL/AHL contracted players assigned to the ECHL, and replacement players from Europe, SPHL, FPHL or free agents. The unknown factor is how many, if any, players from current rosters will decide to continue playing.

Here are more details from my ECHL Stats post today: The ECHL intends to play as many scheduled games as possible during this players’ strike. If two scheduled teams can roster enough players (minimum 13 skaters & 2 goalies), games will be played as scheduled. If not, games will be postponed. Based on this approach, you can expect most, if not all, games scheduled today will be postponed. ECHL coaches/general managers are scrambling to sign enough replacement players to supplement rostered players who choose to play, to avoid postponing games. There are 69 games on the ECHL schedule over the next eight days.

According to the ECHL website, all 15 scheduled games today have been postponed.

- One question I have seen asked several times, but can't find an answer to, is whether the players have voted on the latest offer from the ECHL. I know the players voted a while back to give the PHPA the right to call a strike. That is a different question than whether the players have voted on the "last and final" offer from the owners.

- Another topic of conversation that I see discussed concerning the striking players is vacating their housing. What I have heard (not confirmed) is that all striking players received a letter telling them they must vacate their housing. However, this is complicated because state laws vary significantly in how quickly striking employees can be removed from company housing. It can be as few as three days in low-protection states, to as high as months in high-protection states. As you might expect, Texas falls into the low-protection category.

- Coach Martinson has been busy during the Christmas break talking to players about coming to Allen. He will sign some players who will be on the roster after the strike is over, and others who will compete for jobs after the strike is over. He will also get some help from all his contacts in the FPHL and some fill-in local players if necessary. Martinson has a tough task as he does not have the base of NHL/AHL contracted players that many other teams have. Allen is scheduled to play Tulsa at home on New Year's Eve, and Martinson expects to field a team for that game. Martinson also expects Tulsa will be able to field a team on Wednesday, so the NYE game should be played.

- Obviously, the best-case scenario is that the ECHL and PHPA come to an agreement today or tomorrow, and all of this contingency planning is unnecessary. It doesn't mean there won't be some residual effects from the strike. I will take the optimistic view that somehow and someway a deal gets done. The fans and all the businesses/employees that rely on ECHL games deserve that outcome.

DID YOU KNOW: This is technically not the first strike in the history of the ECHL. In the summer of 1994, the players' association went on strike over wages and benefits. The strike was resolved when the ECHL and its players reached an agreement on a new CBA in September, just before the new season was about to begin.

  1. This is a damn shame.
    What a mess.
Shame on Ryan Crelin and the ECHL.
I feel for the players, many to whom we have bonded with over the years.
I have a pit in my stomach over this mess.

Can the fans help any of the players in any way?

  2. I’m questioning my years as a STH at this point. I struggle to understand the treatment and the inability for the sport of hockey to come together. The ECHL can’t even agree on Dec 24-26 being non travel days. That’s ridiculous. Shame on the league. My money is moving elsewhere. It’s been fun. I’m not interested in watching Scab hockey. Disappointing all round.

    1. No kidding. This will cause 10-25% of the STH base to leave and not renew. Decimating.

  4. I won’t support SCAB players. Treat our boys properly. I’ll be boycotting games that don’t involve our true team. Beyond disappointed that Martinson won’t support our team.

  5. RYAN CRELIN MUST GO.
RESPONSIBLE FOR THE BLACK MARK ON THE ECHL.
    CONGRATULATIONS TO HIM.
HIS FAMILY SHOULD BE SO PROUD.

  6. Don’t put all the blame on the league. The man in charge of the PHPA, he has shown he is not willing to work with a solid offer the league has put forth. The league is giving them what they are asking for. It takes both sides and it seems one side is not willing here. I am not siding with the league or players, just standing back and looking at it as a whole.

    1. Good point. It seems the PHPA has done a bad job of doing what is best for the players. The ECHL deal of a 20% raise is more than fair. PHPA greed could lead to a lockout and losses of jobs for hundreds of players. A very sad situation for all involved.

    2. Fair point, to a degree.
The per diem remains substantially below the AHL. Food is food. The cost is the cost.

The ECHL has flat out refused to have Dec 24,25 and 26 as non travel days. That’s honestly as dumb as dogshit.

      I do blame the ECHL.

Has the ECHL petitioned the NHL
Over the past 5 years to contribute to the ECHL? I suspect the answer is NO, and that falls to ECHL leadership.

    3. 20% more than 2019/2020?
      Mediocre at best.
      Salary floor not lifted.
Teams don’t have to pay max, some teams pay the floor limit.
      Read the existing CBA.
My company had a $50 per diem in 2015.
They can’t even match meal money to the AHL.

    4. I agree. The fact the PHPA didn't let the players vote or even see the ECHL offer is wild.

    5. U sure? U don't vote to strike after setting the ask, and then just accept the offer that is less than 50% of the ask. Lets get the facts correct here.

  7. If they can get enough players, will some of the veterans play or just the rookies?

    1. Madison, your team will not look the same. This is a mess and likely is not salvageable.

    2. Players represented by a union will not cross a strike line to play. Heck UPS drivers (teamsters) wont deliver a package to a company in a strike. Same with any union employee in any industry, none of them will cross a strike line.

  8. If you read personal facebook posts from players, they want to play. They think its a fair deal and they are ready to go. The PHPA appears to be bad at their job and is forcing players into a terrible spot where they either play like they want or get called names from their union. Major fail by the PHPA.

    3. Of course players want to play, it's why they do what they do. That doesn't mean they aren't prepared to stand up for what they feel they're worth.

Most pro sport unions have a big enough platform to garner sympathy from fans. Reading the team Facebook comments the only concern is fans' evening plans because screw the players trying to make a liveable wage on their pre-pandemic CBA, so of course some players feel they need to sit on the fence publicly.

  9. Myles/Mydra, I’m out. I’m done after years of being a STH. I put up with the mess last year, you sold me on changes which were being made and then this disaster. Not any more. I speak for 8 STH. I suspect more will follow. Bringing in replacement players? Total decimation of what was being built. I am angry.

    1. Absolutely ridiculous take as if this is Myles/Johnny’s fault at all. Clearly a spat between the league and the union over minor details.

    2. Do you expect Marty to just forfeit games as the head coach and general manager of the team? He has to play the cards he’s dealt.

      Delete
    3. STH are sick and tired of bullshit. Costy for Marty. Costy gets fired for no reason. Players revolt. BJ comes and goes. Season from hell. Marty comes back. Chad needs to sue because the team wont pay him $75k. Marty back and then this mess occurs.
      Enough already.
      Done.

  14. I am sure this post will be removed, but what a fucking train wreck of a mess this is. A team has been decimated. A season ruined. 2nd year in a row that my money seems to have disappeared with disappointment.
I'd like to hear something from JM and Myles as a Patriots Club member. Silence isn't good. I don't need an email from Austin about swapping tickets etc. Refund me my money and stand up and tell me what you think and how we fix this mess.

    ReplyDelete
  15. The team is bringing in scab players for one reason only, and that is to avoid having to refund STH. They can pay them the league minimum, and still have an on ice product, although I'm guessing substantially below the current level of play.

  26. I've never heard of Ben Johnson until 48hrs ago.
He messed up, and he paid the price, and arguably continues to do so.
I don't condone his prior behavior or actions.

That being said, everyone deserves a second chance.
    He has been punished.
    I'm a hockey fan.
From what I can tell, he is one hell of a hockey player.
I'm disappointed we live in a world where we don't give people second chances, and social media dictates the way the world operates.
I want the Allen Americans to win.
Go Red, but I'm disappointed we have judged and not given the opportunity. I'm sorry to his wife and kids who have to continue to live with the stigma, I for one was open to him continuing to redeem.

Again, never heard of him until 48hrs ago, but I fee disappointed in us releasing him. The world might be a better place if people took a deep breath and a step back sometimes. Just sayin.
    Go Red.
