Allen's next five games, all against the Rapid City Rush, could not be more ironic. Check this out:
- Two teams tied for the worst points percentage in the league (.365), playing five straight times (twice in Rapid City, then three times in Allen). After these next five games, these teams will not play again this season.
- Allen struggles at home, 3-10-4-0 (.294) while Rapid City struggles on the road, 4-11-3-0 (.306).
- The teams have identical records (10-20-7) with the only difference being Allen losing seven games in overtime while Rapid City's seven extra time losses being four in overtime and three in shootouts.
- The teams played three times in Rapid City at the end of November and all three games were close. Rapid City won game one 2-1. Allen won game two 4-3 in overtime. Allen won game three 2-1. The one goal allowed in game three by the Americans on November 30 was the last time Allen allowed fewer than two goals in a game.
- Most ironic of all is who will be behind the bench for this five game series. Chad Costello was fired by Allen in the off season and recently hired as the associate coach in Rapid City after the Rush head coach, Scott Burt, had to take a medical leave. Allen will be coached by Brett Ferguson, who was recently named interim head coach after the Americans fired B.J. Adams, the coach they had hired in the off season to replace Costello.
- And to prove fact can be stranger than fiction, Costello and Ferguson played together on a youth team in Des Moines. Chad grew up in the area and Brett's dad was the coach for the USHL team in Des Moines in the early 1990's.
- It has been a tough go for Costello and Ferguson since they were named to their new postilions. They both have losing records. Costello's record is 5-8-2-1 (.406). Ferguson's record is 0-3-2-0 (.200).
- This five game series is critical for both teams. The loser of the series will likely find themselves in the unenviable position of being all alone as the worst team in the league.
- Here is how Allen and Rapid City rank is some key stats this season:
- Ave. goals scored: Allen #24 (2.51) - Rapid City #24 (2.51)
- Ave. goals allowed: Allen #28 (4.08) - Rapid City #27 (3.78)
- Ave. shots for: Allen #27 (27.22) - Rapid City #10 (31.57)
- Ave shots allowed: Allen #29 (39.32) - Rapid City #23 (32.49)
- Power play percentage: Allen #8 (21.2%) - Rapid City #25 (14.5%)
- Penalty kill percentage: Allen #18 (79.5%) - Rapid City #20 (78.6%)
- Given where these teams are in the standings it is no surprise they don't score a lot (identical average of 2.51 goals per game) and they are at the bottom of the list in goals allowed. In the three game series these teams played at the end of November the winning team allowed one goal, one goal and three goals. That will likely be the kind of game it will take to win in the upcoming five game series.
- Allen does have the advantage when it comes to special teams. The Americans have one of the better power plays in the league. In the three game series at the end of November, Allen was 3-8 (37.5%) on the power play and Rapid City was 1-14 (7.1%). Even with the power play advantage, the Americans need to stay out of the penalty box and avoid giving the Rush extra power play opportunities.
- Don't normally talk about shorthanded goals, but it might be a factor in this series. Rapid City has scored six shorthanded goals and allowed three for a plus three. Allen has scored just two shorthanded goals and allowed five for a minus three. Beware the shorthanded goal in this series.
- These teams are so close statistically these games might be decided by will as much as skill. They have identical records, they have both scored 93 goals and they don't do well playing from behind. Allen is 2-13-2-0 when trailing after the first period, Rapid City is 1-12-0-1. Allen is 1-17-2-0 when trailing after the second period, Rapid City is 0-19-3-0. Playing with the lead will be critical in this series.
- Brayden Watts was on a tear before missing the last two games with an illness. In the prior six games Watts had 11 points (6G, 5A). The line of Watts-Asuchak-Crnkovic have been great since they were re-untied. Mark Duarte has seven points (4G, 3A) in the last six games and should be a factor in this series against his prior team.
- I had a chance to swap messages with coach Ferguson this morning and this is what he had to say,
"We need to be ready to go from the opening puck drop. It is a loud, packed barn and they start fast on the puck drop."
"Our special teams have to be special. We need to end up plus on the score sheet on special teams to give us a chance to win."
"We need to win games 3-2 that we are losing 3-2 or 4-2 with an empty net goal."
- It will be a one referee game tonight. JR Strager (#2) will work the game. Avoiding stick penalties, especially behind the play will be critical.
OTHER COMMENTS
- With all that has happened in Allen since last summer with the firing of Chad Costello, hiring of B.J. Adams and recent firing of B.J. Adams, I have to believe some long time Allen Americans fans will be routing for Chad and Rapid City in this series. Let me be clear I am not in that category even though I consider myself to be a close friend of Chad.
- There are four ECHL teams with point percentages below .400. While Allen and Rapid City are in last place (.365), Utah (.375) and Kalamazoo (.386) are also in the last place sweepstakes. While the Americans and Rush play five straight games, Utah will play six straight home games (three vs Wichita and three vs Idaho). Kalamazoo will play single games against Toledo (A), Indy (H) and Bloomington (H) before playing three games at Iowa. The bottom line is Allen and Rapid City can hope Utah and Kalamazoo go on long losing streaks which will help keep them out of the cellar. The odds are whichever teams loses the Allen vs Rapid City series will find themselves in lone possession of last place.
- The ECHL will be back in full swing tonight after the All-Star break with 12 games on the schedule. All eight Mountain Division teams will be in action with some great match-ups.
- Allen at Rapid City
- Kansas City at Wheeling
- Tulsa at Idaho
- Wichita at Utah
- Fort Wayne at Tahoe
- Chaz Smedsrud, who started the season with Allen is Rapid City's third leading scorer with 21 points in 36 games (6 G, 15A). Rapid City's leader in penalty minutes, Connor Mylymok, who has already logged seven fights was just recalled by Calgary AHL). Here are the details: https://rapidcityrush.com/news/2025/01/connor-mylymok-called-up-to-wranglers
DID YOU KNOW: The ECHL Stats post today is about teams that play well on the road. Allen is one of the teams that has a better road point percentage (.425) than home point percentage (.294).
"With all that has happened in Allen since last summer with the firing of Chad Costello, hiring of B.J. Adams and recent firing of B.J. Adams, I have to believe some long time Allen Americans fans will be routing for Chad and Rapid City in this series"
ReplyDeleteYOU BETTER BELIEVE IT!!!!!
Our family certainly is.
DeleteHorrendous decision to part ways with Costello.
We’ll also be rooting for him next weekend.
He’s a great guy. Don’t deserve this.
Big mistake.
I support Champions. For the next 5 games I’m rooting for Costy.
Sorry, just the way the cards fall.
You're not wrong Barry!
DeleteLet me be clear. I WILL be rooting for Chad and I hope he gets a standing ovation when he's introduced!
ReplyDeleteHe will. Hopefully Lee announces him loud and not inaudible.
Deleteso Costello had a losing record while in allen, now he has a losing record in rapid city and the team has been worse with him behind the bench... yet we want him back? I find that hard to believe for a chamoionship or bust fan base. it must be his friends like Gill and Gens doing all of these comments. BRING BACK MARTY! chad is a nice guy but a proven failure of a coach.
ReplyDeleteHe made the playoffs both seasons as head coach
DeleteSorry - can't argue with stupidity OP
Delete😂 we went to the playoffs every season he coached. He even coached a game when he got the news his dad passed right before a game. You can $hit on him if you want to, but he loves him team and is a great coach. I’d take Costy over BJ all day. For the idiot talking smack about the Rush record, he didn’t pick the team, he stepped in when the coach was diagnosed with brain cancer. Yet another example of a man with character. Check yourself fool.
DeleteYea for tonight I’m all for Chad!!!
Plus he actually had a winning record in those two years
Deletedepends if you count overtime losses as losses or not. If you count them as a wash like the % does, then he was just above .500, otherwise he was just below .500. not good enough for allen sneaking into the playoffs under .500 and getting knocked out.
DeleteTough to make the argument he's a good coach espcly seeing whats going down in rapid and how bad they are under him. Marty coming back is the best option by far.
Marty will never be back in Allen. He’s very happy where he is.
DeleteHello stupid… he didn’t pick the players in rapid 🙄
DeleteI will say this. I did not like they way Chad got to playoffs either year in that it was difficult to watch and live through as an Americans fan. But admit he did get things going in right direction both years, even though it was later in season. You just have to be ready game 1 and not 3 months into the season. He did a lot with little help from affiliates. He was green as a coach. I do think there is significant long term potential to be a very good coach and GM. Sometimes very difficult to move immediately from player to coach. And great players are never guaranteed great coaches.
DeleteI am still a Chad fan, player and coach but would/will need to see coaching results over larger career than 2+ seasons.
Rapid Fan. There should be some player movement in Rapid IMO but Chad for the most part is going with what he had to work with. I believe if Burt doesn't come back and Chad stays we will see a different team.
DeleteYou "don't like the way Chad got to the playoffs" How exactly do you think he got to the playoffs? Shit owner, worse affiliates and major injuries and pulled it off two years in a row - 100% him taking a steaming pile he was given and turning it around.
DeleteYou would rather the team start strong with all the right pieces and coast into the playoffs?
Marty will NEVER return here - it sucks nut it's reality
That is not what I meant. I give credit. I was saying not being ready game 1 and taking three months to find yourself is not a good recipe for success. He did remarkable work with all cards stacked against him. And you never coast into playoffs. Hell, I hate bye weeks and losing focus. .
DeleteTime to let go. Chad isn’t coming back. I get that fans loved him, but can we just move on?!
DeleteI also did not ask that Chad come back. Ship has sailed as has the Marty ship. We lose out on both and people need to accept it. But doesn’t mean that individuals cannot be supportive of both of them.
DeleteI believe Luke Richardson(G) is much better than Thornton or Wells.
ReplyDeleteGoalie can't save you when your defense is beyond pathetic
DeleteAgree
DeleteI vote Costello for President 😁
ReplyDeleteThanks BJ Fanboy 🙄🙈
DeleteWouldn’t a RC 5-0 result over the next 5 games be funny as hell. Even 4-1 would be funny.
DeleteGo Costello!
Go Red, but our seasons over.
When is Red Kingdom coming back?
ReplyDeleteOverdue ....
DeleteHopefully next home game ;)
DeleteNo matter what team, what lineup, what coach, we are outshot on SOG every game at a 1.5x ratio. Need to fix this folks.
ReplyDeleteCan we have a broadcaster who just calls the game
ReplyDeleteits clear the Americans and Costello are dead even. Can we please drop the joke of bringing him back and focus our efforts on getting an actual good coach like Marty? BRING BACK MARTY! Mr. Jack we know you read the blog. Don't bring back the middle to below average Chad. We want championships and we want MARTY!!
ReplyDeleteBring back Costello !!
DeleteDude, Chad inherited that team.
DeleteUse some common sense please.
Ferguson inherited his team too. Chad is a good person and a great player, but I haven't had season tickets for 13 years to watch .500 hockey. Marty is our only hope for actual great coaching and Kelly cups. Sorry. Just how it is.
Deleteagreed. I loved watching Chad play but we were all reminded tonight by watching that game... he is not a good head coach yet. he's a few years under marty away! Marty head coach with chad as his video coach. simple solution.
DeleteHave you asked Marty if he would ever consider coming back? As great as it would be, why aren't you screaming to have Gill back in goal? That time is done, time to look forward. MARTY AIN'T COMING BACK! Your odds of seeing Chad back are slim but if you want to place a bet, those odds are better than Marty!
DeleteI asked him after the Jan 12th game in Athens
DeleteAnd he said? Or is that a secret only you know
DeleteTonight was a cute battle of JV coaches. Time to bring the adult back into the room and make Marty the coach. Myles please do the right thing and save this organization.
ReplyDeleteOmg never gonna happen on either side. Just sleep with a picture of him by your bed
DeleteYou’re seriously comparing Costello to Brett Ferguson?
DeleteBarry can you explain why the building was so empty in Rapid tonight? I know they've always struggled majorly with attendance, but that looked like a Wednesday night in there. Even for that fanbase it was bad for a Friday.
ReplyDeleteSome people want to see a suckfest. Most do not. #explained
DeleteWins = full seats
DeleteLosses = empty seats
Rapid City has struggled in attendance ever since joining the ECHL. They have never averaged 4000 and fell under 3000 a couple of years. In the last three seasons, they have averaged 3605 (2022-23), 3573 (2023-24), and 3234 thus far this season. They have only made the playoffs twice since joining the league (2015 & 2022). Hard to draw fans with that kind of on-ice product.
DeleteThe dumb bash Costello comments are a joke. Chad inherited the RC team. Understand the game of hockey.
ReplyDeleteOpen your eyes to what he did in Allen and how it was done.
If you can’t understand that, or haven’t taken the time over the 2 years he was here to see that, or observed the team this season and compared it to last season or the season before, then you are quite frankly uneducated as to the game of hockey and are chirping from the cheap seats.
Costello was thrust into a coaching role from being a player and succeeded. The results and the transaction made to get there prove that.
Marty isn’t coming back. He’s done with Allen.
Myles should be sitting down with Costello next week and tabling a long term deal with g’tee to coach Allen next season.
Obviously the Marty die hards will oppose that. They always do. How’s this season going? We suck. Continued change is needed.
Chad’s gone. Let go.
DeleteForever? Want to bet?
DeleteLooks like one of us knows much much more than the other.
My thoughts on Chad - overall he is an excellent coach; his players respect him and play hard for him; he had good contacts in the league to allow him to negotiate to upgrade talent on the team. However I don’t see him as a “championship” coach. For the most part Kelly Cup champion teams stress defense and physicality once they reach the playoffs, neither of which is Chad’s strong suit
ReplyDeleteI think he can build a winning team capable of advancing into the playoffs. He is just too nice a guy to instill the “go for the jugular” attitude necessary to win championships (a la Marty).
"too nice a guy to instill the “go for the jugular” attitude necessary to win championships" LMMFAO!!!!
