Tulsa Flips the Script, Game Recap, Video Highlights, Coach's Comments, Allen Shots Allowed Rank Over Time, Interdivisional Play Results and More

The Allen extended its points streak to five games in a 5-4 overtime loss to Tulsa at the CUTX Event Center last night. The game was the opposite of Allen's win in Tulsa Thursday night. The Americans had three shots in the first 36 seconds of the game and came so close to scoring before Tulsa got possession and took the puck down the ice and scored 59 seconds into the game. The Americans fell behind 2-0 at the 6:17 mark of the first period and Allen was chasing the game the rest of the night.

- Easton Brodzinski scored a power play goal late in the period (17:55), after Tulsa was assessed a match penalty for a check to the head. Tulsa led 2-1 at the end of the opening frame. Allen outshot Tulsa 13-8 in the period but the Americans gave up the first goal for the seventh time in 13 games. Allen's record when giving up the first goal is 1-4-2-0 and when trailing after the first period the Americans record is 0-5-1-0, so it was clear the odds were against them.

- Allen still had half of the five minute major penalty remaining at the start of the second period and was able to tie the score 2-2 with its second power play goal. Brayden Watts was the goal scorer tallying his eighth goal of the season.

- It didn't take long for Tulsa to respond after Allen tied the score 2-2. The Oilers scored twice in 64 seconds to regain their two goal lead. What a difference a day makes. Thursday night Tulsa managed one goal on 46 shots. Last night it took the Oilers just 11 shots to scored their first four goals. Before the period ended Allen was able to close the gap to 4-3 on Spencer Asuchak's tip in goal, his fourth of the season. Once again Allen was fighting an uphill battle trailing 4-3 after the second period. Prior to last night Tulsa was 7-0-0-0 with a second period lead.

- It was fitting that the only goal of the third period, which tied the score 4-4, was scored by defenseman Artyom Kulakov. He was the subject of the match penalty for a check to the head in the first period and had to be help off to the locker room. The goal was Kulakov's second of the season. The goal was just the third scored by a defenseman all season. Warmuth had the other one on Thursday night.

- Allen had the only goal of the third period, but Tulsa dominated by outshooting the Americans 15-7. The Oilers also controlled the overtime period, outshooting Allen 5-1. However, Allen's one shot early in overtime was a breakaway opportunity.

- To Allen's credit the Americans fought back from 2-0 and 4-2 deficits and found a way to get the game to overtime. It is always disappointing when you don't get the extra point in overtime, especially with a breakaway opportunity, but Allen earned three of four points against Tulsa after earning five of six against Utah.

- With two more power play goals last night it makes five straight games with a power play goal. In the last five games Allen is 6-14 (42.8%). Overall Allen's power play is now at 23.1% which is ranked #6 in the league. The penalty kill was 0-3 last night including two big kills after Allen had tied the score in the third period. In the last five games the penalty kill was 2-13 (84.6%). As important as the penalty kill has been in the last five games, it is even more impressive the Americans have only allowed 13 power play opportunities in the last five games, an average of 2.6 per game.

- Here are the game recaps from both teams plus the video highlights:

COACH'S COMMENTS

I had a chance to catch up with coach Adam's after the game. This is what he had to say:

"I thought we were playing well in the first period despite the goal count. We had a great first shift and came close to scoring. They got control and came into our zone and we rush a breakout we didn't need to rush and that forced a bad pass. Their shot hits our guys stick, hits the goalie and goes over and we are down 1-0 and then they go up 2-0 before we get a big power play goal to make the score 2-1 at the end of the period."

"I liked our game even when we were down 2-0. We were getting opportunities and hit several posts. Then we got one power play goal and then a second to tie the score 2-2 early in the second period. They came back with a push and scored a couple of goals. There was never an ounce of doubt on our bench, there was a calmness on the bench and the guys just kept working. The game was going back and forth a little bit, but I thought we held up well considering how young we were on the back end tonight."

"Our special teams were good again with two power play goals and the penalty was big in the third period. A couple guys were out there a long time but they found a way to hold the puck and get it out of the zone and get a change and that was huge."

"It was a good game overall, we hit three or four posts and had chances to win the game. I am happy with the way we played. Games can go either way when you get to overtime. Points are key and we got three of four this week after earning five of six last week. I will take that result every weekend. We need to keep putting points in the bank, that is all we can do."

OTHER COMMENTS

- It was quite a night for Spencer Asuchak. It was his birthday, he was honored before the game for hitting recent milestones of 600 pro games and 400 pro points. Then he celebrated with a goal in the game. Spencer has played 623 games for the Allen Americans (regular season and playoffs). That is 276 more games than second place Chad Costello (347 games played).

- Next up for Allen is a three game series in Rapid City next Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. The series may look like an easy opportunity to get points against the last place team in the division, but it would be a big mistake to overlook the Rush. After losing its first nine games of the season Rapid City has won four of the last five games and they have been impressive wins. One against Kansas City followed by a sweep of the Grizzlies in Idaho. The Rush are in the process of playing Idaho five straight time. Last night Idaho beat Rapid City 6-5 and they will play again tonight. The bottom line is despite Rapid City's .393 points percentage the series next week will be a tough one.

- There has been a lot of comments and discussion about the high number of shots Allen has allowed this season. I saw one comment recently that was reminding everyone Allen has always allowed at lot of shots and is usually at or close to the bottom of the list. I decided to go into the archives and see where the Americans ranked in average shots allowed in each season since joining the ECHL. Here are the results which show Allen's rank and the number of teams in the league each season:

  • 29 of 29: 2024-25
  • 27 of 27: 2023-24
  • 26 of 28: 2022-23
  • 26 of 27: 2021-22
  • 8 of 14: 2020-21
  • 22 of 26: 2019-20
  • 26 of 27: 2018-19
  • 23 of 27: 2017-18
  • 22 of 27: 2016-17
  • 18 of 28: 2015-16
  • 11 of 28 2014-15

- Here are the updated Mountain Division standings with goal differential in parenthesis. Goal differential is a good proxy for defining the better teams:

  • .679 - Tulsa (+14)
  • .667 - Tahoe (+6)
  • .643 - Kansas City (+8)
  • .559 - Wichita (+6)
  • .536 - Idaho (+7)
  • .500 - Allen (-20)
  • .423 - Utah (-11)
  • .393 - Rapid City (-13)

If you look at the goal differentials you can see there is a pretty big difference between the top five teams and the bottom three.

- Brayden Watts has scored in four straight home games with a total of five goals. That is the longest home goal scoring streak in the ECHL this season.

- Allen's big four (Asuchak, Brodzinski, Crnkovic, Watts) continue to carry the team offensively. Last night the group had three of the four goals and six of the eight assists. The group now has 26 of Allen's 35 goals (74%), 35 of 53 assists (66%) and 61 of 88 points (69%).

- Only one ECHL team has a current longer point streak than the Americans five game points streak (3-0-2-0), The Wheeling Nailers have a seven game point streak (6-0-1-0).

- There are 11 games on the schedule tonight. Here is the ECHL Today with all of the previews: https://echl.com/news/2024/11/echl-today-nov-23

DID YOU KNOW: The ECHL Stats post today is about how each ECHL team has performed performed when playing teams outside the division. Allen has not played any teams outside the Mountain Division yet. That will change next month when the Americans visit two Central Division teams, Indy and Fort Wayne. In addition, Allen will play three home games against Worcester (North Division) in February and three home games against Jacksonville (South Division) in early March.

How have ECHL divisions fared against each other? Two divisions are above .500 and two below. Here are the overall records and point percentages with a breakdown. The North and Mountain divisions have not played any games against each other yet.

South: 13-4-0-0 (.765)
6-0-0-0 vs North
2-3-0-0 vs Mountain

Central: 12-11-2-1 (.519)

    1. Rapid City series just like was posted yesterday. Likely Game 3 of that series.

  2. The SOG issue isn’t really the debate over what has transpired historically, it’s BJ steadfastly refuses to acknowledge the spread. He refutes the SOG count, says it’s wrong, has stats to prove it, or the other team just throws shots at the net.

The debate has been BJ is like teflon as to the SOG differential, pretty much a 2-1 ratio all season, and Costello and Marty before owned it and said we need to improve.

It goes to one’s character to continually deflect and misrepresent things. It’s a common theme until LJ comes down from the suites and figures out what the heck is going on.

    1. You’re trying way too hard to make BJ look like a bad guy for defending his teams performance. It’s impressive to watch how this team is coming together and I how we can keep it rolling!

    2. BJ makes himself look bad without even trying. Look at his resume & and listen to him talk. Defending his players, now that is laughable.

  3. You’re actually very wrong on this. The main thing Marty would always emphasize is quality shots over quantity. Martinson despised bad shots and shooting the puck just to shoot. Allen’s championship teams got out shot on a regular basis. It’s also very well known by anyone who has followed this team that Tulsa pads their shots at home. It’s been a commonality forever. The shot clock is not an official count. The report the coaches get after the game which BJ is typically referring to is official.

The ECHL official game sheet is what BJ has disputed.
Those sheets are “live” and used by the ECHL for official stats.

    2. The ECHL counts the shots not the coaches lol so no Tulsa can’t pad it, come on now.

    3. No, BJ relies on the stats provided by instat. A system that is paid for by teams and used at almost every level of hockey including the AHL. Instat and their analysts analyze every game and send a full and far more accurate report of all the statistics throughout the game. Including shots on goal. You’re naive enough to think home town “ECHL” employees don’t get a little trigger happy when counting thier teams shots? CMON MAN!

      Delete
    4. Costello himself referred to the actual numbers on instat when talking about being outshot numerous times over the past couple years. You’re running out of excuses!!! The Americans are one of the hottest teams in the league right now. Either embrace it or beat it and find a new team or hobby. Last time I checked people don’t go to games to watch the coach.

DFW is dominated by a top NHL club and we have chosen to follow, invest time and spend funds @ the game. The games are just something to do @ this point. 10. Ok I was a “give BJ a chance guy”. But if he doesn’t connect with the players, then that’s a problem. And since he doesn’t have skins on the wall, the next logical step is to change coach. Who do you get? Don’t know. But this will only get worse. So you need to stop it now. Find a former player or asst coach as I’m sure there are some in the area who would step in even on a temp basis. Hey where’s Tony Curtale ? Lol

well to be clear, there are only about 4 or 5 of us who keeping posting the same negative comments over and over. Not sure what the reference to “5 of 6 points from Utah” means. They were 3-1, off to a great start until they played us. We also got 3 of 4 points from Tulsa who have the best winning percentage in the division.

I added up what I spent on this team since 2009 included the costs of going to 16 road games since I left the area the day after the 2016 season. Also including the 43 game worn jerseys I bought over the years, the 8 years of season tickets (x3 per season)5 - the silent auctions ( do you want to buy my team signed wader boot from Mountain Man Night?) etc etc etc. The $274 that was stolen from me by the front office, the suites I bought for family/friends at the holidays - it comes out to $61,450.

We should rip Rapid City 3-0 next week.
Be on the lookout for a trade in the next week.

  27. At what Win Percentage (or state your own chosen criteria) would you reconsider your current beliefs about the Americans ownership, management, and other decision making staff? What would you suggest the team does to restore trust and increase fan engagement/support?

    1. Make at a minimum the second round of playoffs.
Then I will eat some humble pie, but not all, because its been such a demoralizing train wreck over the last 5 months.
      So much was not required.

    2. Good answer. I agree that making up for this demoralizing train wreck will take a lot of effort.

    3. If they make the play-offs with a winning record I will change my opinion

On the other side of the coin - at what point do all you homers admit this past off season was a unnecessary debacle?

    4. Agreed. A playoff spot and winning record would go a ways for me but I feel I need some admission of guilt (or whatever) about the unnecessary debacle. I still want to know why the decisions that lead to the great dismantling were made and who benefited.

    5. Good Pup! I agree with you but I really doubt that will ever happen - it would take a completely disastrous season and major loss of revenue before these people ever went to that point. They unfortunately view mediocracy as acceptable here and are ignorant of this Organizations history.

    6. You touch on a point here. The best chance we fans have of getting any acknowledgement of mistakes made in the off season and of influencing change is by impacting revenue. Don’t buy tickets, merch, concessions. Even grab up those free tickets and then not show up—but we’d be banking that ownership would pull their head out of the sand long enough to notice and be discerning enough to care. That’s a long shot. And, of course, we miss out on the game.

  28. Yet again I ask- where do you get these free tickets???

  31. Maybe I’ll go to the game on free tickets and wear a sign that says- look at the great seats I got for free while these other jirkoffs laid down big money on the same seats.

  34. Yes but you also bought 40something auction jerseys and spent money on these season tickets so, you’re not the best to give financial advice. And if you paying a pool guy more than $225 an hour talk about a moron

    1. Who said $225/hr - I pay mine fixed fee - probably comes out to $85 to $150 an hour pending on what project he's doing

  38. It’s puzzling that, given a forum to discuss hockey and the Allen Americans, some choose to focus on personal attacks and trolling instead. We’re just a group of strangers with one clear common interest. Does it really matter if someone shares other details about their life? It doesn’t make them better, worse, more of a friend, or more of a foe. We can’t verify if what anyone says here is true or if they’re posting anonymously or under multiple names—and honestly, why does that matter? Unless you’re aiming to build real-life friendships, none of it is relevant. This forum is for talking hockey and the Americans. There’s plenty of space on the internet for everything else.
