Allen Sets Season Shot Record (48), Loses 3-1, Game Recap, Video Highlights, Coach's Comments, Road Trip Schedule, 50 Win Curse and More

The Allen Americans set a season record for shots in a period (20) and shots in a game (48) yesterday, but managed just one goal in a 3-1 loss to Utah. Allen has scored 45 fewer goals this season than any other team in the division and 80 fewer goals than the top team. No matter how well the team plays, it can't win without scoring more goals.

- The lack of scoring is exemplified by the power play. The Americans have not scored a power play goal since the third period of a game in Kansas City on February 21. That was eight games ago. The streak of power play opportunities without a goal has now reached 28. How far has the power play fallen? At the beginning of December the Allen power play was ranked #3 in the ECHL at 26.1%. As of this morning it is ranked #24 at 16.4%.

- Allen gave up the first goal of the game yesterday which the Americans have done in 60% of their games this season. Allen's record when allowing the first goal is 6-26-3-0 (.214). Allen's record when scoring first is the worst in the league, but still much better than when the Americans give up the first goal (8-9-5-2. .479).

- Here are the game recaps and the video highlights:

- Brett Ferguson's post game comments:

"I thought we played well today. Their goalie was the difference in the game."

"We had an unfortunate lapse on their first goal. It was 3-on-3 like in overtime and you play man on man and they got buzzing around us a little bit and we were spinning. On the second goal they did a good job going to our net and getting in our goalie's eyes. Thornton didn't see that shot from the point. We had two defensemen standing off to the side, but they did not take care of our net front, and it ended up in the back of the net."

"It was a great effort by the team and we were never out of the fight. It was a physical fun game with lots of chances back and forth, 81 shots on goal and a couple of fights. We didn't get the two points, but I am proud how the team played."

"There were a couple of spirited bouts tonight, Utah is a lot like us at the bottom of the standings where everyone if fighting literally or figuratively on the ice for jobs next year. In this league contracts are week to week. Nobody has a two-year deal, nobody is signed for next season and everyone is fighting for a job with their current team or with the other 27 teams in the league."

"Our upcoming road trip schedule:

  • Tuesday: fly to Boise
  • Wednesday: play Idaho
  • Thursday: Practice
  • Friday: play Idaho
  • Saturday: play Idaho
  • Sunday: day off in Boise
  • Monday: bus to Salt Lake City
  • Monday night: team is set up to attend the Utah HC vs Detroit Red Wings game
  • Tuesday: practice at Utah HC practice facility
  • Wednesday: play Utah
  • Thursday: practice
  • Friday: play Utah
  • Saturday: play Utah
  • Sunday: fly home"

"We will be gone for 12 days which is logistically a little different than usual. We can only bring so many players and then we will have to deal with injuries and guys coming back from injuries. Injured players Mark Duarte and Kenny Johnson will travel with us to Idaho and will play in that series at some point."

"Spencer Asuchak is hoping to touch the ice while we are gone as he recovers from his injury. He is getting better and it was great to have him on the bench tonight. That was a positive influence on our group.

"We are moving forward as if we will not see Dylan Wells back in Allen, but it would be great if he does return. I hope he stays up and gets some games."

OTHER COMMENTS

- Here are the Mountain Division standings by points with games remaining in parenthesis:

  • 83 points - Kansas City (12 games)
  • 77 points - Tahoe (11 games)
  • 76 points - Tulsa (11 games)
  • 73 points - Wichita (12 games)
  • 67 points - Idaho (13 games)
  • 63 points - Rapid City (12 games)
  • 48 points - Utah (11 games)
  • 38 points - Allen (13 games)

- Former Allen forward, Easton Brodzinski, who led the Americans in goals when he was traded to Tulsa in January has been loaned to the AHL San Diego Gulls since February 25. Easton scored a goal in his first game with the Gulls and has played in eight games since arriving in San Diego.

- Five teams have already qualified for the Kelly Cup playoffs:

  • North Division - Trois Riviéres
  • South Division - South Carolina, Florida, Jacksonville
  • Central Division - Toledo
  • Mountain division - None

DID YOU KNOW: The ECHL Stats post today is about ECHL teams with 50+ plus wins in a season. Allen has never had a 50 win season. The most wins for an Allen team was 49 and that wasn't a championship year, it was in 2016-17. In Allen's two Kelly Cup winning seasons the Americans had 48 wins (2014-15) and 41 wins (2015-16).

Unlikely any ECHL team reaches 50 wins in 2024-25. South Carolina has the best chance, but must win seven of its final 10 games. Maybe their fans should hope they don’t make it.
Here are the ECHL teams with 50+ wins since 2008-09. None of them won the Kelly Cup.

2023-24
54: Kansas City

2022-23
58: Idaho*

2018-19
51: Cincinnati
50: Florida

2017-18
53: Florida
50: Toledo

2016-17
51: Toledo

2015-16
 52: Missouri

2014-15
50: Toledo

*Most wins in a single season all time.

  2. Told ya!!!! Allen got it handed to them!!!! We don’t have one goal scorer on this s—- team

  3. Rebuild.
Top 3 HC/GM are: Mashinter, Ferguson & Martinson.
Outside of Myles, who is making HC decision? Mydra?

    1. Why would Ferguson be on this list. We've literally seen what he can do in half a season. Trade away talent, win a total of 5 games and lose more than 20. That's even worse than BJ. We were close to even with Rapid City when he took over and now Rapid City is above .500. Not bringing up who that coach is. Point is why do you want MORE of Ferguson? He needs to go back to watching videos

    2. You don't think he deserves a chance to prove himself cultivating his own roster and having the benefit of an assistant?
I think the players enjoy playing for Ferguson.

    3. No I don't. He has not made a single move that helped this roster. He's had the team longer than BJ and done even less with it than BJ did. He might be a "nice guy" unlike BJ but he's not a winning coach. I don't want a feel good story. I want a coach that is good enough to get the job done.

  4. Chad Costello's results lately:
The Rush have won 15 of their last 18 games and earned point in 17 of 19.

    Legend!

  5. Look at Ferguson’s record. Why would Myles even consider him for the HC/GM position. We need a coach with a winning record and one who can get good and experienced players to come here.

  6. Not really sure about Mashinter. A sudden firing, with a withholding of reasons why, likely means something untoward happened. If so we do not need more baggage here. No one is perfect, I understand that. However, We need a winner like Martinson, with a multiple team record of championships and who can attract solid to great players.

    1. So back to the "if it ain't Costello or Martinson" it ain't good thing? I would be HIGHLY surprised if either of those two gentlemen would entertain any idea of coming back here!

    2. Mashinter threw a water bottle on the ice in a game against Three Rivers. He confronted an official in the tunnel after the game and the ref reported the conduct to the ECHL.
The ECHL requested Zawyer, owner of the Icemen reprimand Mashinter. When Zawyer sat Mashinter down, he essentially told them to shove their job as they were ECHL puppets and didn't defend him. The reporting was "mutual agreement", it was NOT mutual and was all at Mashinter's doing.

So, Mashinter and Myles have some beef with Zawyer.
The big question is if Myles has sold his shares in other Zawyer teams. My mail is that he has not.

Nothing wrong with tossing a water bottle, or in Costello's case, throwing a jacket, all quality entertainment and quite frankly, love the emotion of the coaches - speaks volumes.

    3. Bring Costello back!

    4. Sounds like a coach I can get behind. As far as other investments, I heard a divesture is coming end of season. And I am "in the know". hahahaha

  7. *** TAX LIEN FILED ***
Not sure who is running the show, and what measures are in place, but a tax lien has been filed against ALA Hockey. Folks, it's $3k, pay the money and get a release filed. Basic stuff. C'mon. Not a good look.

  8. 📣 Marty will NEVER come back here … let it go. Yes he could fix it but he will not say yes.

They will need to hire a coach who has great relationships with players to convince them to come here (even though they had that with Costello).

    1. Did they really take an office vote on Costy?

      Delete
    2. 💯 yes! Absolutely absurd

      Delete
    3. Don't know if there was an actual vote or this or not. With this team it would not surprise me.

After all this was the same team who's head of ticket sales used my credit card to pay for his two kids to go to hockey camp back in 2011.

Go ahead and delete this Barry like you did before you loser ahole but I'm the one who sat upstairs as the AEC for a breakfast meeting then with Matt Canavan and that thief while they begged me to not say anything. I have the credit card receipts and the reversals if anyone wants to see them.

Nothing surprises me with this organization anymore

    4. Costello should add gross incompetency to his lawsuit.
The entire front office should be embarrassed if Costello's viability of the position was based on a vote of "the office".
Not sure if that should be blame at Zawyer, Myles/LJ or Mydra.
      Either way, its comical.
Speaking of LJ, very quiet of late .....

    5. Why tell the same story over and over?
From 2011 .... you hold a grudge against the team today from something 14 years ago?
Surely not. The ex wife - sure, but this from 14 years ago?
      Not Barrys fault either.

    6. Why do we get better info from Anonymous comments than the guy who runs this blog

Asking for a friend that use to care

    7. So rather than the amazing job with covering the team, researching the stats, interviewing coaches and players, and all that Barry does to make this blog enjoyable and a great asset (all without compensation by the way), you believe you get better and more believable info from anonymous sources? Way to trash talk a guy who does one hell of a lot and makes this blog worth reading. Although I am sure you could do it better yourself, why don't you just delete the bookmark and never come back? Memphis Dave has been off his meds lately as well. Maybe it IS time to start requiring registration and an account to post with your real name after all. That would shut a lot of you up while you sit on the toilet commenting with your phone. THANK YOU FOR ALWAYS HAVING ENJOYABLE AND RESPONSIBLE INFORMATION ON YOUR BLOG BARRY!!!

MD yes they actually had an office vote. Which is just stupid imo

    11. No one ever trashy Barry! Just bc they don’t tell him is no shot at him.

Yes most posts with no names are factual statements, don’t know why that’s so hard to believe. Most of the posts too have been correct from the beginning lol, I know hard for you to digest. I’m sure you were one of the just give BJ a chance people too, well how’d that work out for ya. Or were you one of the Chads an awful coach, once again how’d that work for ya? Keep drinking the red koolaid

    2. Yep - I've made the firestorm destruction of 14 year frachise all about me because I'm so important and so responsible for the colossal stupidity that exists within this organization. Keep believing this chitshow will be fixed in an offseason - this team is toxic as nuclear dogshit. You huddle around a blog that refuses to acknowledge the hole they've dug and instead throws out daily stats of what a great team they are when leading with 0:03 seconds while ahead in a game. You have the biggest baffon running the team and actually have idiots saying give him a chance because he's a nice guys - you turds deserve to lose!

Enjoy this mess - you earned it!

Of course it's all about me you anonymous pieces of shit - no balls to even post who you are on a hockey message board - beyond sad - like your current team!

  12. If Costello’s lawsuit is not resolved/settled, the trial could take place in McKinney at the courthouse on 75. If Costello’s attorney requests a jury trial, it might be interesting to be a juror in that case.

    1. It's scheduled for January. It WILL take place in McKinney unless settled. Jury trial has already been requested.
