Individual and Team Stats Show Allen's Offensive Prowess, Team Defense Needs Improvement
Things are all quiet with the Allen Americans this week as the team doesn't have to take the ice until Thursday afternoon as they enjoy some time off away from the rink on their delayed all-star break.
- I thought today would be a good day to take a look at Allen's stats leaders after 49 games. Below are the team leaders in various statistical categories with their league rank in parentheses:
Points:
61 - Tyler Sheehy (1st)
44 - Olivier Archambault (12th)
41 - Alex Guptill (17th)
41 - Alex Breton (17th)
Goals:
24 - Gabe Gagne (2nd)
23 - Tyler Sheehy (3rd)
20 - Alex Guptill (10th)
20 - Jordan Topping (10th)
Assists:
38 - Tyler Sheehy (2nd)
33 - Alex Breton (3rd)
30 - Olivier Archambault (6th)
24 - Brett Pollock (33rd)
Plus/Minus:
+28 - Jack Sadek (3rd)
+20 - Josh Brittain (11th)
+18 - Jared VanWormer (15th)
+17 - Alex Breton (20th)
Penalty Minutes:
75 - Alex Guptill (22nd)
60 - Cole Fraser (44th)
43 - Kayle Doetzel (91st)
38 - Brett Pollock (117th)
Shots On Goal:
146 - Gabe Gagne (9th)
139 - Alex Guptill (18th)
117 - Brett Pollock (42nd)
116 - Jordan Topping (44th)
Points by Defensemen
41 - Alex Breton (1st)
31 - Stepan Falkovsky (6th)
25 - Jack Sadek (16th)
24 - Les Lancaster (17th)
Goals by Defensemen
12 - Stepan Falkovsky (1st)
8 - Alex Breton (7th)
4 - Jack Sadek (40th)
4 - Les Lancaster (40th)
4 - Cole Fraser (40th)
Assists by Defensemen
33 - Alex Breton (1st)
21 - Jack Sadek (11th)
20 - Les Lancaster (13th)
19 - Stepan Falkovsky (15th)
Save Percentage
.930 - Zach Sawchenko
.908 - Andrew Shortridge
.902 - Jake Paterson
.898 - Dereck Baribeau
- If you can draw any conclusion from the individual stats above it would be just how strong this team is offensively and the depth of the team. When you have your fourth best player in any given stat ranked in the top 20 in the league that is great depth.
- Here is how the Americans rank in the ECHL in some critical statistical categories:
#1 - Ave. goals scored (4.18)
#1 - Points (74)
#2 - Winning percentage (.755)
#2 - Goal differential (+47)
#2 - Shooting percentage (12.6%)
#5 - Team save percentage (.909)
#9 - Power play percentage (18.1%)
#10 - Ave. shots for per game (33.96)
#13 - Goalie GAA (3.12)
#13 - Penalty kill percentage (82.0%)
#14 - Ave. goals against (3.22)
#16 - Average PIMS per game (12.6)
#23 - Ave. shots against per game (34.84)
- It is no surprise you can generalize from the team stats above that the Americans do much better on the offensive stats than the defensive stats. With just 32% of the season remaining (23 games) the Americans need to realize they can't make a deep playoff run unless they tighten up defensively. While Allen will never be the type of team that relies heavily on defense to win games because of the style of game they play, the Americans will have to improve on their 34.84 shots allowed per game and 3.22 goals allowed per game. Coach Martinson has said many times in the past you cannot flip switch and play better defensively once the playoffs start. This is something that needs to turn around the next two months.
- With nothing going on the next few days there won't be a blog again until Friday morning when I will preview Allen's game in Kansas City on Saturday and maybe have some info on what the guys did over their all-star break.
DID YOU KNOW: The average goals allowed per game in the playoffs by the last five Kelly Cup champions was 2.66, ranging from 2.30 by Newfoundland last season to 2.85 by Colorado in 2017. Here are the last five Kelly Cup champions with their average goals per game allowed during the playoffs:
2.30 - Newfoundland (2019)
2.79 - Colorado (2018)
2.85 - Colorado (2017)
2.75 - Allen (2016)
2.80 - Allen (2015)

Coach Martinson has a problem recruiting tough stay-at-home D guys. It's almost like there is some sort of clash in their thought process. The last great pure defensive player on this team was Daniel Tetrault and that relationship was no surprise. Can't keep winning home games against teams like the Blunder 7-6.....
ReplyDeleteSpot on with the need for improved defense Barry. For me, Danny Federico as our last true stay-at-home defenseman and he was mainly a Black Ace in the playoffs when he was here. It seems assists and plus/minus are about the only stats that measure a defenseman’s value. Intangibles are the key - backchecking, forced turnovers, etc.
