Macker Thunder Bay Press Conference

Here is a report published in the Chronicle Journal written by Matt Vis on the media conference Macker had last week as he was formally introduced as the new head coach at Lakehead University. I talked to Macker today and he is really excited about the opportunity. He has a nucleus of 14 returning players and I know he will get the best out of his team.

Welcome back, Billy Mac

Thunderwolves head coach Bill McDonald takes a question Wednesday at Lakehead University.
Thunderwolves head coach Bill McDonald takes a question Wednesday at Lakehead University.

By Matt Vis
At his introductory media conference as the newest head coach of the Lakehead Thunderwolves’ men’s hockey team, Bill McDonald emphasized two characteristics that seemed to be in short supply from last year’s team: accountability and responsibility.
Lakehead formally introduced McDonald at the Lakehead University Hangar on Wednesday.
McDonald, a Thunder Bay native, becomes the fourth full-time head coach in the program’s history, relieving interim coach Mike Busniuk, who carried the reins for the team after the dismissal of Joel Scherban last October.
“It’s an exciting day and a start of a new era for Thunderwolves hockey,” said Lakehead athletic director Tom Warden. “We’re really excited about the new era, and excited to have Bill McDonald back in Thunder Bay.”
McDonald, 60, is now tasked with changing the culture of a team that was mired in dysfunction last season. Last year’s squad was swept out of the first round of the playoffs after finishing third in the OUA West Division with a 17-9-2 record.
After a pair of embarrassing home losses early in the season, Scherban was dismissed while rumours swirled around the program about a players’ revolt. Throughout the remainder of the campaign the team was prone to loss of discipline on the ice that hindered Lakehead’s ability to win games, behaviour that it is said will not be tolerated in this new regime.
“I think everything has to do with accountability in hockey, and responsibility. If you don’t have that, you’re behind the eight-ball right away,” said McDonald, a local coaching fixture in the early 1990’s with the professional Thunder Bay Thunder Hawks and Senators.
“The guys that want to be accountable and responsible and play as a team on the ice will be here, and I guess it’s my job to find the guys that maybe don’t want to be here. It’s sort of a clean slate. We’ve got to build a team, be a team, and be together.”
On hand for the announcement were a few returning players from last year’s Thunderwolves team. They say that they are pleased with their first impressions of their newest coach, and are ready to turn the page.
“If we don’t (adapt now) we better find it over the next few months because from what I heard, Bill demands the best from his players,” said veteran defenceman Mike Quesnele, who completed his third season with the team. “That’s what I think this organization wants; a team that’s going to go out there and give its best every night.
Added forward Luke Judson, “We’re trying not to focus on last year as much. Everyone knows the problems we had, and definitely much publicized, but we’re looking forward and that’s it.”
McDonald arrives to the program with an accomplished resume. He spent the past season as a senior advisor of hockey operations with the Central Hockey League’s Allen Americans, but as a head coach captured three Colonial Hockey League championships in four seasons from 1991-1995 with the Thunder Hawks and Senators, and won a Central League title with the Fort Worth Fire in 1997.
It is this history of success that made him an attractive candidate to Warden and the rest of the Thunderwolves board of directors, as they looked to rejuvenate a team that has failed to advance past the second round of the playoffs since hosting the national championships in 2010.
McDonald says that the first step of building the program back to that of a perennial championship contender begins with his entire roster buying into the systems and being on the same page, and that at this early stage he is unsure of the nature of any needed personnel changes.
“I know what the calibre (of university hockey) is all about, but as far as if this team’s good enough to win, I don’t know,” he admitted. “We’ll have to evaluate the talent. I’m already into the bios on the (returning players). I think we’re close. With that being said, I’m not saying we don’t have to add a guy or two or get rid of a guy. All I’m saying is a good team that works hard and plays systems, their chances go way up of winning and you have to be together.”
When asked to summarize his coaching style and features of his teams, McDonald says he wants his team to work together, work hard and embrace physicality, but also to recognize boundaries and not cross them.
“As far as my coaching style, I want to have a hard working team that believes in the system we put forth,” he described. “Be aggressive, obviously the game has changed, but you can still skate and you can still finish hits. Just responsible and be accountable, not only to yourself, but to the guy beside you.”
Quesnele seemed to appreciate the new orders, and acknowledged that following it will likely improve the hockey club.
“I heard he likes a hard, disciplined game,” Quesnele said. “If you’re going to play physical you have to be disciplined, so if he’s going to hold guys accountable that’s what we need, and probably the best thing for this team.”
McDonald also said that he is currently undecided on who will be joining his coaching staff as assistants, but that a decision will be made in the near future.

Practice Notes, Other Series, Brampton & More

Had a chance to catch the tail end of practice today and nothing has changed on who is practicing. Berube was on the ice but Maiani and Pineault were not.  Berube took a puck to the face and left practice to get stitched up and posted the picture below on Twitter. Also, no new players have arrived. I know coach Martinson has said he will be looking to replace Bryce Aneloski who dislocated his elbow but no announcements have been made.
Mike Berube lost a battle with the puck at practice today

- Looked like conditioning day from the part of practice I observed with lots of stops and starts drills.

 - A spring blizzard moving through the northern plains and the state of South Dakota has forced the postponement of Game 6 of the Ray Miron Presidents’ Cup Opening Round series between the Rapid City Rush and the Missouri Mavericks.
The game was originally scheduled for tonight (Tuesday, April 9) with Game 7, if necessary, scheduled for Wednesday, April 10. But due to the treacherous road conditions, high winds, freezing temperatures and snow accumulations in Rapid City, each game has been pushed back one day.  Game 6 will now take place on Wednesday, April 10 and a potential Game 7 will take place on Thursday, April 11.  Both games will face-off at 6:35 PM MT at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.
Missouri leads the best-of-7 series three games to two. The winner of the series will go on to face the Allen Americans in the Conference Semifinal round. Game 1 would be scheduled for Sunday, April 14.

- If you want to get some real insight into what is going on with the team attend one of the radio shows scheduled this week. Always an opportunity to ask questions. Here is the news release with the details. I plan on attending the session with coach Martinson. The Allen Americans will host two live shows this week leading up to game one at the Allen Event Center.
Head Coach Steve Martinson will address Game 1 with a live show on Wednesday at 1:00 pm at Allen Americans  sponsor, La Finca Chiquita, located at 107 N Butler in Allen. Come by and have lunch with the coach and talk playoff hockey.
Thursday night join Jarret Lukin and Mike Berube at Americans sponsor, Renegade Cigars, located at 3613 Shire Blvd. in Richardson for a live playoff show on the back patio. Come meet Lukin and Berube and get an autograph as we gear up for Game 1 on Sunday.

- The second round home playoff schedule is not ideal from a marketing point of view with one Sunday and three weekday games. A real challenge for Mike Martin and the sales staff. Unfortunately the Allen Event Center was booked for the weekend. I know I am making extra effort to encourage friends and neighbors to attend all of the second round games as it will be some great hockey.

- Scheduling is a problem at other venues as well. Wichita is playing the first two home games of their second round series with Fort Worth tomorrow (Wednesday) and Thursday because a Professional Bull Riders (PBR) event has the Intrust Bank Arena tied up over the weekend. And there must be some issues in Fort Worth as they have not announced any dates for their home games in the series.

- I have looked at attendance figures several times and am always surprised we did not draw more fans during the past regular season. I looked up total attendance during the regular season for the Americans for all four years and here are the numbers.
2009-2010     125,760 (adjusted for 33 games)
2010-2011     131,548
2011-2012     143,089
2012-2013     137,186
You can see from these figures this year was the first year attendance did not increase over the previous year. Hopefully this trend will be reversed next year.

- For those of you not following Brampton CHL hockey they are down to the final two names and will either be the Bampton Beast or Brampton Bandits. With all of the great hockey players from the area I wonder if they will have an advantage in recruiting players for their team who might want to play closer to home.

- I still can't figure out why when you go to the Brampton web site, hockeybrampton.com the header on the web site advertising Brampton hockey is an action picture of Anthony Maiani in an Americans uniform. Come On Man!!

Update On Americans Affiliate, Houston Aeros Moving

Found this article written by John Royal, Houston Press Blog, which does a great job of laying out what is happening with the relocation of the Houston Aeros. From all I have read about this situation in the past the relationship between the team and the Toyota Center ownership has been strained as there is a long history. With the great relationship Allen has had with Houston this year it would be a shame if we could not continue this affiliation. Will have to wait and see what happens. It is also important to point out as it may not be clear from the article that the Aeros have the seventh best attendance in the 30 team AHL with an average of 6750 so lack of support is not the issue. It has also been reported in the Minneapolis Star and Tribune to expect an announcement in the next couple of weeks that the Wild’s long relationship with the Houston Aeros is ending. The Wild has not been able to come to terms on a new lease at the Toyota Center.
The Wild is expected to relocate its American Hockey League affiliate to Des Moines, where it will play at Wells Fargo Arena.

The Last Ever (Possibly Maybe Forever) Disappointing Stand of the Houston Aeros

Aeros WHA Logo.jpg
Are the Aeros about to disappear in Houston again?
This time two years ago, the Houston Aeros were making their final push to secure a Western Division playoff spot. They were on a spurt of a fantastic play that would propel them through the end of the season into the Calder Cup finals, where they came up just short of the AHL championship. Two years ago, the team was packing the Toyota Center. The players were happy. The coaches were happy. The fans were ecstatic. The future looked bright. But that was two years ago.
Now the Aeros are in the middle of a desultory ten-game home stand that, instead of propelling them into the playoffs, has them poised on the brink of missing out on postseason action. But this ten-game stretch, which ends next Saturday, might not only see the team blowing a playoff spot, it might also mark the end of the franchise's tenure in Houston.

The Aeros' lease with the Toyota Center is up at the end of this season, and though the parties are negotiating and have been negotiating throughout the season, the odds in favor of the team staying in Houston are dropping more rapidly than Astros left fielder Chris Carter dropping easy fly balls.
"We're still talking," Aeros GM Jim Mill said yesterday. "We're still talking. We're still in negotiations, talking to Toyota Center."
The Aeros have seemingly been set on a move since even before the season started, with rumors of negotiations to move the team to Des Moines, Iowa, dominating talk. There's also been mention of a relocation to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where the Minnesota Wild, the owner of the Aeros, are supposedly setting up a junior league franchise. And just last week, the rumors erupted with talk that the Aeros will be moving to Peoria, Illinois, a city that's losing its team not because of attendance but because the team has been sold to the folks who own the Vancouver Canucks and who want to move the team closer to Vancouver.
But with the season fast approaching an end, those people hoping for closure might have to keep on waiting. That would include season ticket holders, who have yet to receive information regarding ticket renewals for next season.
"It depends on negotiations," Mill says about whether a lease renewal will be announced before the end of the season. "It's all depending on how that goes."
There are several possible reasons for the non-lease renewal, and those reasons are primarily linked to Toyota Center and the Houston Rockets. One so-called reason is that Toyota Center has decided it is losing too many big concerts, and thus big revenue, by having to accommodate the Aeros. But this makes no sense seeing as how venues in Los Angeles, New York City, Chicago, Dallas, Boston, Toronto, Washington, D.C., and Miami are still able to squeeze in multiple big-money concerts while also serving as homes to professional basketball and hockey teams. It's also been rumored that Les Alexander has done the math and determined that he can make a profit off of the arena by just hosting the Rockets, various rock concerts and whatever other events he can bring into the city.
The team, meanwhile, is still playing hockey. But the Aeros' play on this current homestand, which should have seen them solidifying a playoff berth, has instead more closely resembled the play of a team that has already mentally relocated itself to the offseason. And with the emptiness of Toyota Center for this week's games, it appears that the fans have also checked out on this season.
The team is 1-2-1-1 for this homestand (after pulling out an overtime win last night) and they have five games left on what has been a very disappointing stand inside Toyota Center. Instead of helping the team solidify a playoff spot, the Aeros have struggled at home and are finding themselves on the verge of missing the playoffs in what could be the team's last season in Houston.
"We needed [last night's win] bad," head coach John Torchetti said. "Nobody expected to have that 0-2-2 start at home. And then we're a little bit shorthanded if you noticed, again."
Next week might see the end of the last ever homestand of the Houston Aeros (who are in sixth place in the playoff standings, but only six points up on the 11th-place team, with only eight teams making the playoffs). Two years ago, the team was on top of the Houston sports scene, playing for a championship before packed houses. Now they're on the verge of a relocation that could once again bring an end to professional hockey in the city of Houston.
Change happens, especially when it comes to the minor leagues -- see the Astros trying to rob New Orleans of its minor league team and move it to The Woodlands. It's just a shame that the team hasn't been putting up more of a fight before it's all over.

Former Americans Players Update

Can We Come Back Next Year Daddy?
As Bruce Graham celebrated his championship with his daughter yesterday I thought I would check out how other Allen alumni were doing in the playoffs. The AHL has not finished there regular season so no playoffs yet in that league but here are some updates on the AHL:

- The Springfield Falcons (Scott Howes) have clinched first place in their division so will be playoff bound. Scott has not been playing recently because of injury. He hopes to return for the playoffs.  One of the most amazing statistics of the year has to be Scott finishing 20th in the CHL and 3rd on the Americans with his 21 goals while playing in only one third of the games.

- The Manchester Monarchs (Colton Yellow Horn) are tenth in the conference in points and will need to play very well down the stretch to make the top eight to secure a playoff spot. The good news is Colton has stuck with the club since being called up in early February. He has six goals and eleven assists for 17 points in the 23 games he has played in the AHL. Is is also a +5

- The Grand Rapid Griffins (Brett Skinner) lead their division and will make the playoffs. Brett has 2 goals and 13 assists for 17 points in 28 games since being called up and is a +7.

- The Houston Aeros (Ryley Grantham) are ranked fifth in the conference (eight make the playoffs) and look in good shape to make the playoffs. Ryley has 4 assists and 69 penalty minutes in 23 games since being called up. His plus minus is +4 but he has only had two minus games out of the 23 he has played.

- The Texas Stars (Jordie Benn) have clinched first place in their division and are considered a favorite for the Calder Cup. Jordie has 23 games with the Dallas Stars and 43 with the Texas Stars. In his 43 AHL games he has 7 goals, 14 assists for 21 points. In addition he is a +5 and has 111 PIM's

ECHL PLAYOFFS - 1st Round:

- The Elmira Jackals (Coach Dwight Mullins) are playing the Florida Everblades in the first round and are 1-1 having lost the first game 5-1 & won the second game 8-2. Both of these games were in Florida so they are headed back to Elmira for the next three games.

- The Gwinnett Gladiators (Justin Bowers) lead in their series 2-0 against the South Carolina Stingrays. Justin has one assist in the first two games.

- The Toledo Walleye (Nino Musitelli) are down 2-0 in their series with the Cincinnati Cyclones having lost the first game in 2 overtimes. Nino did not play in either game as according to the ECHL transactions he was placed on reserve on April 5th. I don't have any details.

- The San Francisco Bulls (Scott Langdon & Dylan King) who are the number eight seed are playing the top team in the league, the Alaska Aces and have split the first two games in Alaska. This would be a major upset but I would expect Alaska will win the series.

- The Las Vegas Wranglers (Judd Blackwater) are playing the Stockton Thunder and lost the first two games both in overtime. Judd had a goal in a 3-2 loss on Saturday. These are the 4th and 5th seeds so it should be a good series heading to Las Vegas for the next three games.

- The Ontario Reign (Colton Yellow Horn) swept the Utah Grizzlies 4-0 in the first round. Even though Colton is no longer on the team I thought you might be interested.

So there you have the update. The question which players that have worn an Americans jersey will join Bruce Graham as season champions. I sure hope it is the players currently wearing the Americans jersey!!

Graham vs Whitley Update- Graham Wins Championship

Bruce Graham - chlphotos.com
Chris Whitley - chlphotos.com
Bruce Graham and his Nottingham Panthers took on Chris Whitley and his Cardiff Devils yesterday in the semi finals of the playoffs of the Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL). The EIHL is the top league in the United Kingdom. Bruce got the best of his old teammate "Whits" as he got a hat trick and was the #1 star of the game as Nottingham won the one game playoff  by a score of 6-3. Compared to the CHL the playoff  in the EIHL is quite different and as Bruce explained to me it is set up more like soccer playoffs. Here is how it goes.

- Eight of the ten teams in the league make the playoffs, this is where the similarity to the CHL ends.

- The first round of the playoffs is a two game home and home series with total goals deciding the winner if they split the two games. As it turns out three of the four first round series ended up splitting the two games. Nottingham lost to Fife in their first game 4-2 but won the second game 3-0 to advance on total goals 5-4. Cardiff had a similar road to the semi finals by losing to Braehead 7-5 in their first game and then winning the second game 7-2 to advance on total goals 12-9.

- The second round/semifinals is a one game playoff which took place yesterday (Saturday). As mentioned above Nottingham took on Cardiff in one game and Belfast faced Coventry in the other. Nottingham won 6-3 and Belfast won 5-1 to advance to the one game final game which took place today.

- It is interesting to note that with two games in the first round and only one game in the second round you would think there would be upsets along the way. However, this year the two teams in the finals (Nottingham & Belfast) were the top two teams in the league standings.

- The third place game was played earlier today and Coventry beat Cardiff 11-5. Probably a tough game to play as the last game of the year playing for third place. Chris Whitley gave up five goals in the first period and was replaced. He had a tough playoffs (remember only four game) with a GAA of 6.21 and a save percentage of 82.6%.

-The championship game just finished and Nottingham was the winner with an exciting 3-2 overtime victory over Belfast. The BBC first post an the game is below. The reference to the "dream treble" is that Nottingham won the league championship (equivalent to the CHL's Governor's Cup), the Challenge Cup (a tournament spread through out the season) and the playoff championship (equivalent to the CHL's President's Cup). Congrats to Bruce and Whitney from all of their Allen Americans fans on what I know was a great experience living and playing hockey in England and on an outstanding season. They are headed home to New Brunswick this week.

Elite League play-off final: Nottingham Panthers 3-2 Belfast Giants (after overtime)

Nottingham Panthers secured a dream treble with a gripping overtime Elite League play-off final win over Belfast Giants at the National Ice Centre.
A freak Rob Lachowicz goal and Jonathan Weaver's rasping strike put Panthers 2-0 up at the end of the second period.
Belfast fought back to level at 2-2, through Robby Sandrock's sweet strike and Kevin Saurette's rebound.
But Jordan Fox grabbed the decider on the rebound in the extra period to break Belfast hearts on the powerplay.

Pineault Fundraiser Big Success

Adam, Monique & Shadow Pineault When He Was Playing For Pardubice, Czech Republic
Wanted to give everyone an update on the event Adam and Monique had last night at the game to raise funds for Martine Durelle to help her offset some of the costs associated with a bone marrow transplant she is about to undergo. What a great effort led by Adam & Monique but supported by the front office, players, players wives and girlfriends, coaching staff, owners, corporate sponsors, and of course the fans.

Raffle Items, Silent Auction & Live Auctions Items On Display
There were some great items up for grabs including autographed jerseys, stick, pucks, rounds of golf, dinner with players, oil change for a year, lawn service for a year, gift certificates just to name a few.

The live auction immediately after the game was a huge success because of some very generous fans that I won't name here because I didn't get their permission but the amount raised from the live auction of jerseys with Lee Hastings as the auctioneer included:
Jarret Lukin  - $1400
Darryl Bootland - $1300
Aaron Dell - $1200
Adam Pineault - $1200

Adam & Monique had a goal when they started planning this event of raising $10,000 for Martine. I got a text from Adam last night that the total raised was $15,818 which obviously blew away the goal.

Adam wanted to make sure I passed along his and Monique's gratitude to all of the Allen fans for their support of the Allen Americans and their generosity in making the Martine Durelle fund raising event an overwhelming success.

I want to add my personal thanks to Adam & Monique for their efforts not only with this event but their involvement in the community since their arrival in Allen. The player profile I did about them is still the most popular story I have ever written and also the most inspiring. I wrote in that profile the following: I hope I can share with you the passion, devotion, love, dedication, determination and positive attitude Adam brings to his life and hockey as well as his family and particularly to his lovely wife, Monique. Those words were true back in January when I wrote them but the are reinforced today with what Adam & Monique have done to help Martine Durelle.

BIG GAME, BIG CROWD, BIG WIN

Allen defeats Denver by winning the game 6-2 and the series 4-1 - photo by chlphotos.com

Allen made little doubt of the outcome of the game and the series last night as they scored five unanswered goals before Denver got on the scoreboard. It has been a while since we have seen the traditional end of series handshake at the Allen Event Center (AEC). What fun!! Here is some info and thoughts on the game, the series & the playoffs:

- It was great to see the AEC close to capacity with what I think was the biggest crowd of the season of 5283. The average attendance for the three home games in the first round of the playoffs was 4135 (the official stats on chl.com are off by 1000) which ranks second in the league and is the highest average attendance the Americans have ever had in the playoffs and the numbers should increase for the second round.

- Jim McKenzie was named the #1 star with his usual solid intense effort along with a goal and two assists.

- Brian McMillin was undoubtedly the series MVP. He added two goals last night and sits on top of the CHL all by himself in goals scored with five. In addition he leads the league in points with seven (tied with Todd Robinson), shooting percentage at 38% as his five goals have come on only 13 shots. Add to all of the offense his second in the league +/- of +5 and his work on the penalty kill unit that has only given up two goals in 27 chances. He is also the CHL 3 Star leader having been named the #1 star twice and #3 star once in the series. And did I mention he took a stick to the mouth for a bunch of stitches and some lost teeth and has been wearing a full cage the last three games. Hands down the MVP of the series.

- Aaron Dell with another stellar performance last night (#2 star). If McMillin is the series MVP then Aaron Dell is a close second. He has the best GAA in the league at 1.61, the best save percentage at 93.9% and is second in the CHL (right behind McMillin) in the 3 Star points total.

- Another effort worthy of mention is the play of Tyler Ludwig in the playoffs. Even though he had a great regular season offensively there were comments about his -7 which was the lowest on the team of the players that played all year. Well guess who leads not only his team but the entire CHL in +/- in the playoffs. Yes, it would be Tyler who stands alone at the top of the CHL with a +6. He is also second in the league in scoring among defensemen with five points.

- Special teams continue to shine as the power play is number one at 18.52% and the penalty kill is number two at 92.59%. If the team can keep this special teams play going through out the playoffs we will do well.

- Two patterns have emerged in the play of our amateurs the good news being their scoring and the bad news being injury. There was a new amateur in the lineup last night as Justin Kirsch is injured. The new player, wearing Scott Howes #13 is Alexandre Lavoie who just finished his junior career with the Rimouski Oceanic of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Alex continued the streak of the amateurs scoring in their first game with an assist on the goal scored by Jamie Schaafsma.
Welcome To Allen Alexandre Lavoie

- Amateur Bryce Aneloski was injured during the third period. He posted on Twitter,  "My hockey season is officially over with a dislocated elbow. Thank you to the Allen Americans and their fans as I'm truly blessed." Bryce made quite an impression in the five games he played for Allen. It would be great to have him back next year.

- It is official the Americans will play the winner of the Rapid City vs Missouri series which heads back to Rapid City after the Mavericks won the last three game in Missouri to take a 3-2 lead.  They play Tuesday and Wednesday (if necessary). While all of the second round playoff dates have not been announced the first two games of the series will be at the AEC on Sunday, April 14 and Monday April 15.

- Fort Worth defeated the Quad City Mallards last night 1-0 to take the series 4-1 and move on to a second round match up with the Wichita Thunder. This will be a rematch from last year as they met in the semifinals last year with Wichita winning 4-2.
