Allen's OT Loss to Wichita Game Recap, Video Highlights, Martinson Comments, Sheehy Sets Record, Wade MacLeod Video Update and More

The Allen Americans finally made it to the Christmas break with an extraordinary 3-2 loss in overtime to the Wichita Thunder last night. An exhausted and shorthanded Americans team came back from a 2-0 deficit to force overtime and earn a point. If you are an Allen Americans fan all you can do is marvel at what this team has accomplished all season but especially in December. The Americans have already taken December trips to Tulsa, Idaho, Adirondack, Brampton, Worcester and Wichita and they still have another trip to Idaho before the end of the month. A ton of travel, no time to practice, injuries, loans to the AHL, and nine of 12 games on the road. With all of these obstacles Allen's record in December is 8-2-2-0. Job well done!

 - Though it was disappointing to lose in overtime last night after the team busted their butts to come back from being down 2-0, Allen fans have to be proud of this never quit team that was playing their third game in less than 48 hours with two players short. The fact that the winning goal was scored by Wichita on a power play made it all the more disappointing. Goalie Zach Sawchenko was given a penalty for closing his hand on the puck, a call that confused many including coach Martinson. Here is the wording from the rule book on the rule cited (67.2) in the official box score. FYI, this rule does not distinguish between goalies and other players. Here is the wording, "A player shall be permitted to catch the puck out of the air but must immediately place it or knock it down to the ice. If he catches it and skates with it, either to avoid a check or to gain a territorial advantage, a minor penalty shall be assessed for "closing his hand on the puck."

- The goal scorers for Allen were Jordan Topping (10) and Tyler Sheehy (14). Here are the video highlights with all of the goals and many quality saves by both goalies.

- Here is the game recap from the Allen Americans which includes this quote from coach Martinson about the game and the penalty call in overtime. "It was a great comeback by our group. We have been playing shorthanded all week. Today we played with eight forwards and six defensemen. It was a great show of character by our group. As far as the call on Sawchenko, I have never heard of that rule. I am still waiting on an explanation from the league." Here is the complete quote and press release: https://allenamericans.com/americans-extend-point-streak-to-four-games-with-ot-loss-in-wichita/

- Tyler Sheehy factored in both Allen goals (1G, 1A) to extend his points streak to 12 games and his multiple point game streak to 10. Sheehy has played in 29 games this season and has been held scoreless just six times. The last time Tyler didn't have a point in a game was November 30. He has a point in 15 of his last 16 games. To put this in perspective, this rookie is breaking Chad Costello records. His 10 straight games with multiple points is an all time Allen record. In the last 10 games Tyler has 23 points (8G, 15A) for a point per game average of 2.30. For the entire season his points per game average is now up to 1.38.

- Allen enters the Christmas break with 48 points, three more points than second place South Carolina and a nine point lead in the Mountain Division. How much improvement has there been from last season at the Christmas break? The Americans are +32 points better than last season at Christmas break (48 points versus 16 points).

- Coach Martinson was upfront during the summer about the risk he was taking this season by recruiting more players than normal that could play in the AHL but were not under contract with any AHL team. Players that were free agents and susceptible to being loaned to any AHL team. He had hoped Iowa would sign some of his players and they have done that with Olivier Archambault, Alex Breton and Josh Atkinson. Others like Matt Register and Jake Doty have been with AHL clubs all season on tryout contracts and could still get signed to AHL deals. Then you have players like Les Lancaster, Turner Ottenbreit, Gabe Gagne and Brett Pollock who have excelled in Allen and are now getting looks by AHL teams. It remains to be seen how many Allen players will be loaned to AHL teams after the New Year and for how long. It also remains to be seen how many players will be assigned to Allen by the Wild organization. Injuries have caused the number of players assigned to be fewer than expected. Hopefully, all of these moving parts will allow the Americans to have a full roster without having to bring in players from elsewhere.

- I am sure many of you have seen the most recent video update from Wade and Karly MacLeod. I wanted to include the update video in the blog for those that aren't on social media and may not have seen it.

Wade played in Allen during the 2016-17 season after he recuperated from his second brain surgery. Here is some background from his GoFundMe page that was set up just over a year ago and has raised over $125,000.

We would like to start by telling you about this incredible young man, Wade MacLeod and his beautiful young family.

Wade is 31 years old and has spent his entire life dreaming of being a husband, and father while playing in the NHL.  This dream almost came true 5 years ago, but while playing for Springfield Falcons in the AHL, Wade suffered a grand mal seizure on the ice, which led to the discovery of the first tumor.   Wade returned to the game a year later, after undergoing  brain surgery to remove the tumor.  Following surgery, Wade lost the ability of speech and spent 3 months undergoing speech therapy.   His dream of being a husband and father has come true with a beautiful wife, Karly and 11 month old baby girl, sweet Ava James.  Wade’s courage and unwavering determination to be a loving husband and father and still play the game he loves so much has been an inspiration to us all.  Since then, Wade’s tumor has relentlessly grown back 3 times.  Each time, Wade returned to the game but his dream of playing in the NHL was over.

Wade was going to return to playing hockey in Dresden, Germany, this August.  That dream was dashed as our dear friend Wade MacLeod is now preparing to have his 4th brain surgery in less than 5 years.

He has a Grade 3 Glioblastoma tumor and it has come back, once again, with a vengeance, after going through surgery only 2 months ago!

Here is the update with what has happened in the last year plus. As I said when I posted the video on Twitter yesterday, a Christmas gift to everyone who has followed the MacLeods through the trying times. Grab a tissue and immerse yourself in a sea of love, positivity and gratitude.

- Finally, I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. You won't hear from me again until after the New Year. Yes, I am heading out on my last hunting trip for the year. Going pheasant hunting in cold, windy, North Dakota one more time. I want to thank all of you for your support over the years and look forward to a prosperous and productive New Year for the Allen Americans.

DID YOU KNOW:  If Allen can continue their current pace, which is a tough ask, they can approach the all time record for points improvement from one season to the next which is held by the Toledo Walleye who went from 49 points in 2013-14 to 107 points in 2014-15, a +58 point increase. A +43 point improvement would crack the top 10 all time.

Allen Wins Again, Game Recap, Video Highlights, Martinson's Comments, Allen vs Wichita Preview, Martinson Win Countdown, Sheehy Ties Record and More

How good is the 2019-20 version of the Allen Americans? Last night they beat Rapid City 5-2 for their 22nd win of the season, the most in the ECHL. The Americans won despite playing with 14 skaters and one of them, Gary Steffes, was just plucked out of retirement after not playing a game for 258 days. Most importantly, Allen overcame the Saturday night specialty jersey curse which is proof positive this is a special team.

- Allen wasn't as dominant as in their win over Rapid City Friday night. The Americans out shot Rapid City 47-30 on Friday, Rapid City out shot Allen 40-28 on Saturday. What Allen did do well was score the first two goals of the game, go 2-7 on the power play and and 0-6 on the penalty kill. Jake Paterson was outstanding in goal stopping 38 of 40 shots for a save percentage of .950.

- Goal scorers for Allen were Greg Campbell (1), Jared VanWormer (11), Tyler Sheehy (13), Josh Brittain (7) and Jordan Topping (9). Another game where Allen's depth shows with five different goal scorers.

- Here is the game recap from the Allen Americans: https://allenamericans.com/19922-2/

- Here is the game recap issued by the Rapid City Rush. If you want a goal by goal recap of the game with great detail this is for you: https://www.rapidcityrush.com/en/news/2019/rush-fall-in-series-finale-before-holiday-break

- Here are the video highlights with all of the goals. You have to watch the Brittain goal a few times to appreciate the effort:

- When I stopped by coach Martinson's office after the game he was not a happy camper which was a surprise given his team had just beat Rapid City 5-2 and I walked into his office just in time to see Martinson's son, Logan, score a goal in his NAHL game, which the coach had playing on his monitor. There was a lot on Martinson's mind as the team prepared to leave for Wichita where they will play the lone game in the ECHL the day before the Christmas break. While every other team is now on their Christmas break, Allen is the only team having to travel. There were many other issues on Martinson's mind the least of which was having to play Wichita shorthanded. Brett Pollock will be back from his one game stint in San Diego where he had two assists and was named the #3 star of the game but Gary Steffes is done with his two game emergency help. Bottom line is Allen will play with 14 skaters again today.

Coach Martinson did want to share his thoughts on the incident that happened early in the first period that led to Rapid City's Taylor Crunk being ejected from the game. I quote Martinson, "I was a bit surprised they sent out Crunk, who has no points, to instigate a fight right off the face off. First, we don't have any players that can't play and contribute so we don't want anyone to fight him since he can barely check anyone. Second, we only had 14 guys and are playing four games in five nights. They send Crunk out by himself to switch out the wing just to start a fight. Are their coaches that dumb to think we would waste a player on fighting him. I guess they are that dumb since he cross checked and tried to jump Doetzel. We should have had a seven minute power play. The penalty Crunk took really helped us in getting a very important power play goal after a bit of a sluggish start."

- Tyler Sheehy keeps on rolling. He had a goal and an assist last night to extend his point streak to 11 games. Even more impressive is he has multiple points in nine straight games which ties Chad Costello for Allen's all-time record. Tyler had the game winning goal in both games against Rapid City.

ALLEN VS WICHITA PREVIEW

- It will be a tough task for Allen this afternoon (4:05 pm) as they play their fourth game in five days and third in 48 hours. The Allen at Wichita game is the only ECHL game scheduled today. It would be nice to go into the Christmas break with a win but no matter what happens in Wichita the Americans will enter the break with the most points in the league.

- Allen has won three straight and is 8-1-1-0 in their last 10 games. Wichita is 4-6 in their last 10 games. Allen beat Rapid City at home by identical scores (5-2) on Friday and Saturday. Wichita also played at home beating Tulsa 4-1 on Friday and losing 3-1 to Utah on Saturday.

- Statistically Allen has the clear advantage. The Americans average 4.00 goals per game compared to 2.9 for the Thunder. Allen gives up an average of 3.1 goals per game, Wichita 3.8. The Americans have the better power play 13.4% vs 10.8% and the better penalty kill 82.5% vs 77.2%.

- Allen is 3-0-1-0 against Wichita this season and won the only game played in Wichita 3-2. The Americans have always played well in Wichita with a record of 19-6-1-2 since joining the ECHL.

- Everyone is tired and beat up after a grueling December schedule but they need one more gut check before getting three days off. I have a feeling goalie Zach Sawchenko will have to help steal this game.

- Whatever happens today in Wichita, a few stats to put this season in perspective. Allen has just three regulation losses since October 26. Allen has 22 wins. In all of last season the Americans won just 25 games. Allen got their 22nd win this season on December 21. Last season the 22nd win came on March 9.

- Steve Martinson can get within one game of second place on the coaches all-time pro wins list with a win in Wichita today. Here are the top three:

1244 - Scotty Bowman
1027 - John Brophy
1025 - Steve Martinson

DID YOU KNOW: Tyler Sheehy should be a lock for the ECHL player of the month for December. He still has four game to play but so far is has scored in every game in December and has eight goals and 15 assists for a points per game average of 2.1. Tyler deserves a call up to Iowa so hopefully he will get a chance at the next level. I know coach Martinson wants to make sure he plays rather than sits if he gets called up. Stay tuned.

Allen Wins, Game Recap, Video Highlights, Martinson's Comments, Pollock Loaned to San Diego, Rush Rematch, Multiple Points Record and More

The Allen Americans leveraged a 47-30 shot advantage to a 5-2 win over the Rapid City Rush last night before a crowd of 4564 at the Allen Event Center. Allen's record against the Rush this season is now 4-0 with a rematch on tap tonight at 7:05.

- Even though there was no first period scoring the Americans were in control from the opening puck drop, out shooting the Rush 16-8 at the first intermission. Allen scored two goals in the first half of the second period and the game was not in doubt from that point forward. Rapid City managed to close the score to 2-1 by the end of the second period but that is as close as they could get as Allen scored three goals in the third period.

- Things got testy in the last 10 minutes of the game when 40 of the games 58 penalty minutes were assessed. It all started when a Rapid City player shot the puck into the Allen net after a whistle. The Americans took umbrage and things went down hill from that point. In the next five minutes there were four roughing penalties and four fighting major penalties. Rookie Cole Fraser was caught off guard in his fight and suffered a one punch knockdown. In the other fight Alex Guptill was the clear winner.

- Allen out shot Rapid City in all three periods and when they needed a big save goalie Zach Sawchenko was up to the task. Zach stopped 38 of 30 shots for a save percentage of .933.

- Goal scorers for Allen were Corey Durocher (4 & 5), Jared VanWormer (10) and Tyler Sheehy (11 & 12).

- Here is a detailed game recap issued by the Rapid City Rush:  https://www.rapidcityrush.com/en/news/2019/allen-takes-game-one-over-the-rush-5-2

- Here is a highlight package with all of the goals, some saves and the Guptill fight:

- Here are the Allen goals from Sporfie which gives you a different view than the game highlights. I know most of you look at replays on your phone but if you can see these on a bigger screen you can better appreciate these goals.

Corey Durocher - A lot to watch on this first goal of the game. Jared VanWormer takes a shot from the outside and heads to the front of the net. Jared's shot bounces off the end boards right to Josh Brittain on the side boards who immediately puts a pass on the tape of Durocher's stick in the slot. Corey makes no mistake going high on the glove side of the goalie off the crossbar and in. A great play by all three players:

Jared VanWormer - This goal is pure VanWormer where he just out works his defender to score a goal. He literally dove toward the puck to slap it in the net. Here are two views of Jared's goal:

Tyler Sheehy - Alex Guptill makes this play by first intercepting the puck on the sideboards and then making a great backhand pass to Sheehy who is open in the slot. The red hot Sheehy makes no mistake burying the puck.

Corey Durocher - Josh Brittain didn't get a point on this goal but watch as he comes up center ice, the defenseman moves a little toward Josh. Jack Sadek makes a pass to Durocher on the wing and it looks like his speed surprised the defenseman who could not recover. A strong play by Corey beating both defensemen and sliding the puck into the net for his second goal of the game:

Tyler Sheehy - I have seen this several times this year and to me it says a lot about how unselfish this team is. Brett Pollock could have scored this empty net goal but passed the puck to Sheehy instead. Sheehy scored his second goal of the game and kept his streak of games with two or more points going, it now stand at eight games. In the last eight games Tyler has 19 points (6G, 13A) for a points per game average of 2.38, incredible!

- With Allen shorthanded up front and needing some emergency short term help who are you going to call, none other than Gary Steffes. For the third season since retiring, Gary answered the bell last night going from volunteer coach, team chaplain, mentor to player. He didn't factor in the scoring but you could feel his energy and enthusiasm. He made a big hit on his first shift and looked like he fit right in. See Martinson's comments below.

STEVE MARTINSON'S POST GAME COMMENTS

"It took us a while to start scoring and I hated it when were up 2-0 and they got that goal. These guys (Rapid City) hang around. They get out shot but the they keep working and we have seen that before so it was good to get that third goal."

"I think young Cole Fraser was not ready for that first punch in his scrap but that is how you learn. You have to learn the hard way sometimes. Remember he is only 20 years old. He is okay."

"Guptill is also okay. I worry about him throwing so many punches with the guys helmet on but he is okay."

"Brett Pollock is being loaned to San Diego (AHL) tomorrow. He will fly out in the morning and then they will fly him to Wichita for our game on Sunday against the Thunder."

"Durocher is starting to pick up his scoring. He was snake bit his first five or six games. He can really skate and now the puck is going in for him."

"With Pollock going to San Diego we have now loaned a league leading seven free agent to the AHL. It is a good opportunity for our guys."

"My big push with the team right now is we know we are going to score goals but we have to be better defensively."

"Gary Steffes is just filling in tonight and Saturday. He has a full time job and is just helping us out. For as much as he played tonight for a guy that just skates once in a while he was unbelievable. No normal person would be able to do that. Thank god Gary is such a good living guy. He was ready to go out all of the time tonight. He is just amazing but I see him working out at the gym all of the time at he works hard. He just loves coming back and playing."

"We will be okay when we head to Idaho after the Christmas break. With all of the injured players and loaned players, we will get enough guys back to have a full team in Idaho. We might need to have a defenseman play up front but I do not expect to be shorthanded."

ALLEN VS RAPID CITY REMATCH

- From Allen's perspective more of the same from last night should get the job done tonight. The Americans need to play smart when it comes to the rough stuff since they will go into the game shorthanded. They don't need any more injuries and can't afford to get a player suspended.

- The Americans didn't allow a power play goal (0-4) last night but didn't score one either (0-4). Getting the power play going would sure help.

- The Rush will be playing desperate tonight as they try to break their five game losing streak. Rapid City has lost 10 games in regulation all season but five of them have come in the last five games.

- Allen on the other hand has won six of their last seven games and keeps overcoming adversity to win games even when not playing their best. Last night was a well played game by the Americans. Hopefully they can repeat that performance tonight.

- Jake Paterson will get the start in goal and Brett Pollock will be absent. Unless something changed over night that will be the extent of the lineup changes.

- Rapid City will use an EBUG (Thomas Hodges) again tonight so they will rely on Alex Sakellaropoulos in goal.

- It is specialty jersey night (Nickelodeon) so the Americans will have to overcome the specialty jersey curse if they expect to win.

DID YOU KNOW: Tyler Sheehy has so many scoring streaks going it is hard to keep track. His streak of consecutive games with an assist was ended at eight last night. However, he scored two goals to extend his point streak which is now at 10 games. With his two goals Tyler's multiple points streak is now at eight, one game shy of the Allen record.

I looked back at Chad Costello's record for consecutive games with multiple points and found he had nine straight games with multiple points two times when he played in Allen and both were in 2016-17. Chad had multiple points in nine straight games from 12/28/16 to 1/20/17 and then had another nine game streak from 1/26/17 to 2/15/17. You add it all together and Chad had multiple points in 18 of 21 games. In those 21 games Costello had 49 points (11G 38A).

Allen vs Rapid City Preview, Roster Update, Matt Register Story, The Ironmen and More

After a successful but exhausting four game road trip where Allen earned six of eight points the Americans now have the challenge of three more games in less than 48 hours before the much needed Christmas break arrives.

-First up are two games (tonight and Saturday) against the second best team (by winning percentage) in the Mountain Division, the Rapid City Rush. There is little doubt the Rush will have the fresher legs going into the game tonight. Here is a comparison of the last week for both of these teams.

Rapid City - played at home last Saturday and resting ever since

Allen - played in Adirondack last Saturday and bused 400 miles to Brampton after the game. Played the Beast on Sunday. On Monday Allen bused 500 miles to Worcester. Played Worcester on Wednesday. Thursday bused to Boston to fly back to Allen. To make matters worse for Allen, during the road trip they lost Nick Boka, Olivier Archambault and Spencer Asuchak to injury and Gabe Gagne to a loan to the AHL. None of these players are available tonight.

- With all of the missing forwards I wouldn't be surprised if coach Martinson reaches out to Gary Steffes to help out. Steffes stays in great shape, attends some practices as a volunteer coach and I know he and coach Martinson have talked about the possibility of helping out when the team is shorthanded. Now may be that time.

- There is no time for sympathy for the Americans as they need to find a way to overcome the obstacles and get two wins against Rapid City. Here are a few keys to this two game series.

- Rapid City was the last ECHL team to lose a home game, winning nine straight at the start of the season. However, the Rush are now in the midst of a four game losing streak with all four losses coming at home. In the four losses the Rush managed just six goals.

- Allen's strength has been their consistency and depth. They have not gone more than one game this season without earning a point. The Americans have won five of their last six games. In their last four games, 11 different players scored goals.

- The game tonight will be the fourth of nine times these teams will meet this season. The Americans won the first three meetings, all at the Allen Event Center (AEC) by one goal. Here were the results:

October 11: 3-2 in overtime
November 1: 3-2 in overtime
November 2: 4-3

- Special teams are always a key and Rapid City's success has been partially due to great special teams play. When you add power play and penalty kill percentages together and the number exceeds 105% it is considered outstanding. Anything below 100% is considered disappointing. Here are those percentages:

Rapid City:  106.8% - (PP 19.7%, PK 87.1%)
Allen:           93.7%  - (PP 12.9%, PK 80.8%)

- On the recently completed four game road trip the Allen power play was much improved going 4-17 (23.5%). The penalty kill struggled on the road trip going 6-15 for a penalty kill percentage of a dismal 60%. With the disparity of special teams success the key for Allen in winning the special teams battle against Rapid City is to stay out of the penalty box.

- The biggest key for Allen in the game tonight is to play better team defense. Allen has given up 16 goals in the last three games. Both Allen goalies have played well but they need some help. Zach Sawchenko should get the start tonight with Jake Paterson in goal tomorrow.

- Brett Pollock and Tyler Sheehy will be trying to extend streaks tonight. Pollock has an assist in eight straight games. Sheehy also has an eight game assist streak but also has a nine game point streak.

OTHER COMMENTS

-  Here is a story about Matt Register's experience with the Iowa Wild. He points out in the story he has lost close to 17 pounds since the season began and has been working with the Wild's skating guru, Aaron Ness. - Chad Costello continues to lead the DEL, the top German league, in scoring. In 28 games Chad has 36 points (15G, 21A). His team, Krefeld Pinguine, is in 12th place in the 14 team league.

- Last season two teams finished with a winning percentage above .700. This season there are three teams still above .700.

.764 - Cincinnati Cyclones
.736 - Florida Everblades

2019-20

DID YOU KNOW: With Spencer Asuchak out with an injury the Americans are down to just two players that have played in all 28 games, Brett Pollock and Alex Breton. In their 10 year history the Americans have had at least one player play in every game each season, the Ironmen. Will that 10 year streak be broken in 2019-20? Here is the list of Ironmen from past seasons:

2018-19 - Spencer Asuchak
2017-18 - Joel Chouinard, Casey Pierro-Zabotel

Allen Ends Road Trip With a Win, Game Recap, Sheehy Streak Continues and More

It wasn't easy but the Allen Americans finished their road trip with a 5-4 win over the Worcester Railers last night before a crowd of 2002 at the DCU Center.  Playing shorthanded with the entire top line (Gagne, Asuchak, Archambault) missing the Americans dressed seven defensemen and just eight forwards. Allen took a 5-1 lead early in the third period before giving up three unanswered goals. Between the 7:18 and 14:54 mark of the third period, Worcester scored a shorthanded goal, a power play goal and an even strength goal to close the gap to 5-4. The Railers put on pressure with the goalie pulled but Allen held on for the win.

- Allen hit the keys to victory but seemed to run out of gas in the third period at the end of this grueling road trip. The Americans scored the first goal of the game, a power play goal by Jack Sadek with just 14 seconds remaining in the first period. The Americans record when scoring first is now 12-2-1-0.

- The Allen power play was 2-13 in the first three games of this road trip. Last night the power play was 2-4. The penalty kill gave up one goal in four opportunities. A good job on special teams was a key.

- The Americans were out shot in the final two periods 34-14 including 15-6 in the third period when Allen gave up three of Worcester's four goals.

- The goal scorers for Allen were Jack Sadek (3), Jared VanWormer (9), Alex Breton (4), Jordan Topping (8) and Cole Fraser (3). Another game that showed the depth of this team with five different players scoring goals.

- Here is the game recap from the Allen Americans:  https://allenamericans.com/americans-hold-on-for-5-4-win-in-worcester/

- Here is the game recap issued by the Worcester Railers: https://railershc.com/third-period-comeback-comes-up-short-in-railers-5-4-loss-to-americans/

- Tyler Sheehy had two more assists last night to extend his point streak to nine games and has at least one point in 12 of the last 13 games. He has had multiple points in seven straight games. Tyler now has 34 points (10G, 24A) and is tied for the ECHL lead in scoring. His 24 assists are the tops in the league. Here is a breakdown of Sheehy's recent scoring binge:

17 points (4G, 13A) in last seven games
19 points (5G, 14A) in last nine games
25 points (6G, 19A) in last 13 games

- Tommy Daniels talked to Sheehy after the Allen win last night:

- Alex Breton had a goal and an assist against Worcester. After a slow start to the season when Breton had just one goal and seven points in his first 17 games he has now had at least one point in eight of the last 11 games. In the last 11 games Alex has 13 points (3G, 10A). He is #5 in the ECHL in scoring by a defenseman.

OTHER COMMENTS

- After a home heavy schedule in October and November things have now balanced out. Allen has played 13 home games with a record of 10-2-1-0 and 15 road games with a record of 10-3-2-0.

- Allen leads the league in points with 43 followed by South Carolina with 41 points and Newfoundland with 40 points.

- Here are the current Mountain Division standings based on winning/points percentages with games played in parenthesis:

.768 - Allen (28)
.611 - Rapid City (27)
.603 - Idaho (29)
.580 - Utah (25)
.500 - Wichita (29)
.462 - Kansas City (26)
.429 - Tulsa (28)

- The Utah Grizzlies are a team on the rise in the Mountain Division, they are 5-0-2-0 in their last seven games. Wichita has been losing ground with a record of 3-6-1-0 in the last 10 games.

- There is no rest for the weary as the Americans had a very early wake up call this morning to drive to Boston for their flight home. They will arrive home this afternoon and will take on Rapid City tomorrow (Friday) and Saturday before traveling to Wichita for a game on Sunday. I am sure everyone is looking forward to the Christmas break after the Wichita game.

- I will have a complete Allen vs Rapid City preview tomorrow morning but it is worth noting while Allen has been doing a lot of playing and traveling the Rush have been resting all week. They have not played a game since last Saturday.

- Steve Martinson's countdown to #2 in all-time pro wins:

1244 - Scotty Bowman
1027 - John Brophy
1023  - Steve Martinson

Allen vs Worcester Preview, Christmas Critical Dates, Single Season Assist Leaders, Martinson Win Countdown, Current Streaks and More

The Allen Americans finish their four game swing through the ECHL North Division tonight (6:05 pm Allen time) as they take on the Worcester Railers. Allen is 2-1 thus far on the road trip and need a victory tonight to make the trip a success.

- By most statistical measures Allen should come out on top against Worcester. The Americans are #1 in the league in points (41), Worcester is last with 17 points. Allen's winning percentage is .759, Worcester's is .354. Allen scores an average of 3.9 goals per game, Worcester 2.8. The Americans allow an average of 3.1 goals per game, Worcester 3.8.

- Don't be so quick to put this game in the win column for Allen. Worcester has won their last two games, only the second time all season they have won back to back games. In their last game (Sunday) the Railers beat a good Reading team 4-1. Allen on the other hand split their last two games but gave up six goals in each. The Americans roster is stretched thin because of injuries and loans. Nick Boka was injured on Saturday and has been placed on injured reserve where he joins Ben Owen. Olivier Archambault is on the road trip but has missed the last two games and is doubtful for the game tonight. Spencer Asuchak is also doubtful for the game tonight. Gabe Gagne has been loaned to Ontario (AHL) and three defensemen are still in Iowa.

- Some good news for Allen will be the return of Josh Lammon who has been on medical leave because of a family emergency. The Americans gave up five power play goals in the last two games (5-9). I don't think it is a coincidence the penalty kill suffered with Lammon out of the lineup.

- Allen has a goal differential (goals for minus goals allowed) of +20. Worcester's goal differential is -26. The Railers have been outscored in the third period by 22 goals (17-39). This game will likely come down to the third period where Allen has scored 32 goals compared to 17 for Worcester.

- Allen's road power play percentage is 11.7% and penalty kill is 80.0%. In the first three games of this road trip the Americans were 2-13 (15.4%) on the power play and 5-11 (54.5%) on the penalty kill. If they expect to come out on top tonight winning the special teams battle is essential. Worcester has given up six shorthanded goals (one every four games) so an opportunity for the Allen penalty killers to go on offense.

-  Tyler Sheehy and Brett Pollock will be trying to extend their current league leading streak of seven games with an assist. Sheehy also has a point in eight straight games.

OTHER COMMENTS

- If you are a fan of online auctions a reminder that the Allen Americans are using LiveSource to auction jerseys and other items. Check out the Allen Americans LiveSource auction as some good deals can be had.

- It is that time of year where players are coming back and going to Europe. This can have a big impact on rosters as high end players come and go. Jack Combs recently left Wichita for Germany and Hunter Fejes just left Orlando for Austria. On the other hand, Kyle Bonis just returned to the Toledo Walleye from Slovakia. Look for more movement until the deadline for players to return from Europe passes (February 15).

- The Christmas waiver/trade freeze begins on Saturday (21st) at 3:00 pm EST and runs through noon on the 26th.

- The Americans drew the short straw when it comes to the Christmas break because they are on the road just before the break and right after the break. Allen plays in Wichita on the 22nd and are in Idaho on the 27th. The Christmas break is the 23-25. While some players will head home from Wichita most will not.

- Tyler Sheehy is tied for #6 in ECHL scoring (31 points). He is the only rookie in the top 16 in scoring.

- Steve Martinson's countdown to #2 in all-time in wins:

1244 - Scotty Bowman
1027 - John Brophy
1022 - Steve Martinson

DID YOU KNOW: I posted the following on my ECHL Stats page today. You can find my daily posts by liking ECHL Stats & Information on Facebook and following @ECHLStats on Twitter.

I am re-posting  here because I am always amazed at the records Chad Costello set in the three season he played in Allen. Here is the post:

Utah’s Tim McGauley had six assists last night, just missing the all time record of seven. Here are the most ECHL assists in one season since 2009-10. FYI, in 2016-17 and 2014-15 Chad Costello had more assists than anyone else in the league had points.

89 - Chad Costello, 2016-17
84 - Chad Costello, 2014-15
79 - Chad Costello, 2015-16
76 - Tyler Donati, 2009-10
68 - Shane Berschbach, 2016-17

Allen Loses to Brampton, Sheehy, Pollock, Gagne Move Up Leaderboard, Shooting Percentage Leaders and More

The Allen Americans finished their three games in three days with a 6-4 loss to the Brampton Beast last night before a crowd of 2257 at the CAA Centre. It was a game in which the Americans never had a lead after giving up the first goal of the game and falling behind 4-1 midway through the second period. To their credit the Americans closed the gap to 4-3 and 5-4 and the game wasn't decided until Brampton scored an empty net goal with just over a minute remaining.

- Goal scorers for Allen were Jared VanWormer (8), Stepan Falkovsky (4 & 5) and Gabe Gagne (15).

- Here is the game recap from the Allen Americans: https://allenamericans.com/americans-fall-in-brampton/

- Here is the game recap issued by the Brampton Beast: https://www.bramptonbeast.com/en/news/beast-clap-back-to-end-two-game-losing-streak

- Special teams played a key role in the game. While both teams had two power play goals the Americans were 2-9 while Brampton was 2-5. In the last two games Allen's penalty kill gave up five goals (5-9) which is a penalty kill percentage of 44.4%.

- The Americans have given up six goals in three of their last six games. Amazingly, Allen's record in those three games was 1-1-1-0. Giving up six goals per game is not the formula for success. When I  talked to coach Martinson early this morning all he had to say about the game was, "It was a frustrating game, we are going to need to get better defensively."

- There is little doubt about the offensive talent of the 2019-20 Allen Americans. They are ranked #5 in the league in average goals scored per game at 3.11. The gap between Allen's rank in goals scored and goals allowed is widening. As of this morning Allen is #3 in goals scored (104) and have slipped to #13 in goals allowed (84). With two defenseman on injured reserve (Boka & Owen) and three in Iowa (Atkinson, Register, Lancaster) it is not an easy task but the Americans need to get the goals allowed down.

- The team spent the night in Toronto because a lot of players have friends and family in the area. The team left at 9:30 am EST this morning on the 500 mile bus trip to Worcester where they will take on the Railers on Wednesday.

OTHER COMMENTS

- Despite the loss to Brampton the Americans are tied for the ECHL points lead with South Carolina at 41. Talk about a team that knows how to play defense, the Stingrays have given up only 50 goals in 24 games. South Carolina is on pace to allow less than 150 goals for the season. The Stingrays hold the ECHL record for fewest goals allowed in a season at 153, which they set in the 2017-18 season.

- Tyler Sheehy had two assists in the Brampton game to keep his point streak alive which is now at eight games. Tyler has had multiple points in the last six games. He now has 31 points (10G, 21A) and is tied for #5 in the ECHL scoring race. Here is a breakdown of Sheehy's recent scoring binge:

14 points (4G, 10A) in last six games
16 points (5G, 11A) in last eight games
22 points (6G, 16A) in last 11 games

It is very impressive Tyler is averaging 2.00 per game over the last month. Those are Chad Costello like numbers.

- Gabe Gagne scored his 15th goal of the season in the loss to Brampton. Gagne is now tied for #2 in the ECHL in goals. Gabe has a goal in six of his last eight games.

- Brett Pollock has quietly moved up to third in scoring for the Americans with 25 points (9G, 16A), trailing Sheehy (31 points) and Gagne (26 points). Brett has a seven game point scoring streak and has three goals and nine assists in the last seven games.

- Sheehy and Pollock are tied for the current longest streak in the ECHL for games with an assist. Both players have at least one assist in the last seven games.

- Allen hasn't gone more than one game without getting at least one point all season. They have only lost two games in a row once (against Cincinnati) and one of those was in overtime. Another reason the Americans need a win on Wednesday against Worcester is to avoid a second straight regulation loss for the first time this season.

DID YOU KNOW: The Americans have some great goal scorers on the team. Here are Allen's top players this season in shooting percentage. Anything above 15% is considered excellent.

18.8% - Josh Brittain
18.5% - Stepan Falkovsky
16.4% - Olivier Archambault
15.9% - Tyler Sheehy
15.6% - Gabe Gagne
15.5% - Alex Guptill

Last season two players finished above 15%, Riley Bourbonnais (18.1%) and Zach Pochiro (15.4%).

Allen Wins 7-6 in Shootout, Game Recap, Video Highlights, Allen vs Brampton Preview and More

The sign of a good hockey team is one that finds a way to win when they don't play their best. That was the case last night as the Allen Americans beat Adirondack 7-6 in a shootout before 2730 disappointed fans at the Cool Insuring Arena.

- The game started out great for the Americans as they took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. Over the next two periods Allen gave up leads of 2-0, 4-2, 5-3 and 6-5. To their credit the Americans never allowed the Thunder to take the lead but time and time again Allen let Adirondack back in the game. Special teams were the biggest issue for the Americans as they had the worst penalty kill performance of the season, giving up three power play goals on four opportunities. Allen had just one power play of their own and it was a five minute major but they could not capitalize.

- Both goalies were outstanding in overtime with Allen having the edge in shots 8-4. The game wasn't decided until the fourth round of the shootout. Former Allen player/coach, Casey Pierro-Zabotel, went in the fourth round for Adirondack and missed. That brought up Alex Guptill who scored the game winner for the Americans. It was the first shootout of the season for Allen who has now had 11 of their 26 games (42%) go to extra time. The Americans have earned 19 of their 41 points (46%) in games that have gone extra time.

- Goal scorers for Allen were Gabe Gagne (14), Cole Fraser (1&2), Corey Durocher (3), Tyler Sheehy (10), and Alex Guptill (11). I have always thought the player that wins a game in a shootout should get credit for a goal but that is not the case so Guptill does not get credit in the stats for his shootout goal. It was a big night for Cole Fraser who scored his first two professional goals. Tyler Sheehy continued his hot streak with a goal and two assists. Tyler's point scoring streak is now at seven games, he has goals in five of the last seven games and in his last 11 games he has 20 points (6G, 14A), an average of 1.82 points per game.

- Here is a video highlight package of over five minutes with all of the goals and some great saves by both goalies:  https://www.echl.com/en/2019-20-highlights/10/allen-americans-vs-adirondack-thunder-dec-14-2019-pfPGYrzT

- Here is the game recap issued by the Allen Americans: https://allenamericans.com/americans-win-first-shootout-of-the-season/

- Here is a great game recap from the local paper (The Post-Star) with many quotes:
https://poststar.com/sports/hockey/thunder/thunder-lose---in-shootout/article_95ad037b-045d-5b75-a7b5-038e719bbb02.html

- I briefly touched base with coach Martinson after the game and he said, "We had bad defensive zone coverage and we were bad on the penalty kill. We are going to have to work on a few things."

ALLEN VS BRAMPTON PREVIEW

- It will be a couple of travel weary teams that take the ice this afternoon (3:00 pm Allen time) for their third game in less than 48 hours. Allen's shootout victory finished at 7:35 pm last night and they then had to travel 400 miles to Brampton. Not sure when they arrived but there was some iffy weather in western New York. The team was estimating between 3:00 am - 4:00 am. for arrival in Brampton.

- Allen thought it was a tough night of travel but Brampton had it worse. Their game didn't finish until 9:50 pm and the Beast gave up two third period goals to lose to Reading 5-4. Brampton's 400+ mile trip home had to seem a lot longer than Allen's trip. The Beast barely made it home before sunrise.

- It will be all of the cliches for this game between Allen and Brampton. Survival of the fittest, will over skill and who wants it more.

- Brampton comes into the game this afternoon in third place in the North Division with an overall record of 15-10-1-0 and a home record of 10-4-1-0. After their win in Adirondack last night Allen's record is 19-4-3-0. The Americans road winning percentage of .769 (9-2-2-0) is the second best in the ECHL.

- If Allen expects to win in Brampton they have to fix the special teams. The power play was 0-4 in Adirondack including a five minute major last night. The penalty kill gave up three goals last night to one of the worst power play units in the league. A third of Adirondack's home power play goals all season were scored last night.

- Allen is struggling on special teams with road percentages of 9.8% on the power play and 82.2% on the penalty kill. Brampton's home percentages are 20.9% on the power play and 89.9% on the penalty kill.  Special teams will be a big key today.

- Both teams are almost unbeatable when scoring the first goal of the game. Scoring the first goal will be even more important today with tired teams. Allen's record when scoring first is 11-2-1-0, Brampton's is 13-2-1-0.

- Allen has a lot of players playing hurt and are shorthanded as well. Olivier Archambault sat out last night, Josh Lammon is on leave with a family medical issue and Nick Boka left the game last night after being boarded. My reporting is Allen is flying in defenseman Gregg Campbell, who is not on the trip, for the game today.

- Allen will have a fresh goalie for the game against Brampton as Zach Sawchenko will be in goal after being the backup last night.

OTHER COMMENTS

- Allen has created some separation in the Mountain Division standings. Here are the current point standings with games played in parenthesis:

41 - Allen (26)
33 - Rapid City (27)
33 - Idaho (28)
29 - Wichita (27)
27 - Utah (24)
24 - Kansas City (25)
22 - Tulsa (27)

- With his current streak of 20 points in 11 games Tyler Sheehy has moved into the top 10 in ECHL scoring. His 29 points (10G, 19A) ranks him tied for #8 in the ECHL scoring race.

- There are six games around the ECHL today. Here is a preview on each one:  https://www.echl.com/en/news/2019/12/echl-today-dec-15

DID YOU KNOW: Goalie Parker Milner of the South Carolina Stingrays has played in 12 games this season and already has five shutouts. The ECHL record for shutouts by a goaltender in a single season is eight.

Trip to the North Starts With a Win, Game Recap, Video Highlights, Steve Martinson's Post Game Comments, Rematch Preview, Martinson vs Probert Fight and More

The Allen Americans improved their record to 18-4-3-0 last night with a 4-1 win over the Adirondack Thunder before a crowd of 2350 at the Cool Insuring Arena. It was an inauspicious beginning as Adirondack scored the first goal just 109 seconds into the game. As it seems to happen so often the two former Allen players on the Thunder factored in the goal. Alexandre Carrier scored the goal and Casey Pierro-Zabotel assisted. That was the end of the scoring for Adirondack as the Americans held the Thunder scoreless for the last 58:11 of the game.

-  Josh Brittain tied the score at the 6:54 mark of the first period on a great individual effort and the teams headed into the first intermission tied 1-1. The goal was Josh's sixth in the nine games he has played since signing with Allen.

- Tyler Sheehy scored the only goal of the second period, his ninth of the season on a perfectly placed laser shot. Tyler also had an assist in the game and now leads the Americans in scoring with 26 points (9G, 17A). Sheehy also leads all ECHL rookies in scoring. Tyler is on a six game point streak (4G, 7A).

- Jordan Topping, who was playing in his first game since November 24 after spending time at home because of a family illness, scored twice in the third period, his sixth and seventh goals of the season, to make the final score 4-1.

- Zach Sawchenko had another great night in goal stopping 31 of 32 shots for a save percentage of .969. Zach improved his season save percentage .933, good for the third best save percentage in the ECHL. His record is now 7-1-1-0.

- Here are the video highlights of all of the goals and some great saves by Sawchenko:

STEVE MARTINSON'S POST GAME COMMENTS

"Our depth kicked in again tonight. It has been the strength of our team this season."

"If you haven't seen the goal by Josh Brittain take a look as it was a highlight goal for sure, splitting two defensemen."

"Zach Sawchenko was really solid in goal again stopping 31 of 32 shots."

REMATCH PREVIEW

- It is hard to find fault with a 4-1 road win but there is room for improvement. Allen gave up an early goal which has happened a lot this season. The Americans have given up the first goal in 12 of their 25 games. Four of their seven losses have come when allowing the first goal.

- Allen did a good job last night of coming back from the early Adirondack goal to tie the score 1-1 after the first period. These teams have a combined record when leading after the first period of 17-4-1-0. Getting off to a good start will be a key for Allen in this rematch.

- The Americans were 0-3 on the power play last night and continue to struggle. The power play is ranked #24 at 10.8% (11-102). A power play goal would be key in the game tonight.

- Jake Paterson will get the start in goal and will try and repeat the performance of his last start when he stopped 29 of 30 shots for a save percentage of .967.

OTHER COMMENTS

- Jordan Topping's two goals last night makes 10 players with multiple goals in the last seven games, the definition of team depth.

- With the win last night Steve Martinson took another step closer to becoming #2 on the all-time wins list for pro coaches. Here is the list:

1244 - Scotty Bowman
1027 - John Brophy
1021 - Steve Martinson

- The Cool Insuring Arena where Adirondack plays, originally called the Glens Falls Arena was opened in 1979 and cost three million dollars. It was Steve Martinson's home rink when he played 46 games for the Adirondack Red Wings (AHL) in parts of two seasons from 1986-88. Martinson had 224 penalty minutes in those 46 games, averaging 4.9 PIMS per game.

- Here is a classic fight at the Glens Falls Arena from 1986. Steve Martinson was playing for Hershey and Bob Probert was playing for Adirondack. Martinson was giving up a couple of inches and 25 pounds to Probert who became an long time NHL enforcer for the Red Wings and Blackhawks.

- Allen now has 18 wins this season. Last season they didn't get their 18th win until February 22.

- Allen owner Jack Gulati was at the game last night and talked to Tommy Daniels between periods. Still nothing official from anyone connected with the Allen Americans but my reporting indicates the team is still in the process of being sold.

- Wichita lost 6-3 to Tulsa last night and has lost seven of their last nine games (two in overtime). If you go by winning percentage Utah has now passed Wichita for the final Mountain Division playoff spot. Here are the current standings with games played in parenthesis:

.780 - Allen (25)
.635 - Rapid City (26)
.574 - Idaho (27)
.543 - Utah (23)
.519 - Wichita (26)
.458 - Kansas City (24)
.423 - Tulsa (26)

- Of the four division leaders by winning percentage, Allen has the best balance of goals scored and allowed. However, there are plenty of ways to be successful. Newfoundland is #1 in goals scored (110) and #24 in goals allowed (94). South Carolina is #1 in goals allowed (49) and #10 in goals scored (80). Cincinnati is #2 in goals allowed (59) and #15 in goals scored (78). Allen is #5 in goals scored (93) and #7 in goals allowed (72).

- It is another full slate of games in the ECHL tonight with all 26 teams in action. Don't forget the Americans game will start at 4:00 pm Allen time. Here is the ECHL preview of all 13 games:  https://www.echl.com/en/news/2019/12/echl-today-dec-14

DID YOU KNOW: Allen has now played 25 games. Is this the best 25 game start for Allen since joining the ECHL? Close but it falls one point short of the best start ever. In Allen's first season in the ECHL (2014-15) when they played their entire 72 game schedule against the CHL teams that joined the ECHL, they had one more point after 25 games. Here is Allen's record after 25 games for each season since joining the ECHL with points in parenthesis:

2019-20:   18-4-3-0   (39 points)
2018-19:   6-17-0-2   (14 points)
2017-18:   15-7-2-1   (33 points)
2016-17:   13-12-0-0 (26 points)
2015-16:   15-9-1-0   (31 points)*
2014-15:   19-4-1-1   (40 points)*

Allen vs Adirondack Preview, Allen's Balanced Scoring, GAA Leaders by Season and More

It is game day for the Allen Americans as they venture into the North Division for a rare visit. While Allen played six games against the North Division last season going 1-5 they did not play any games against the North the prior three seasons (2015-18).

- Allen starts their four game road trip against the Adirondack Thunder with games tonight (6:00 pm CST) and Saturday (4:00 pm CST). Adirondack is currently in fourth place in their division with a record of 11-10-2-2. The Thunder have lost their last three games (2 in OT) and are 4-4-2-0 in their last 10 games. Allen is first in the Mountain Division with a record of 17-4-3-0 and are 7-1-2-0 in their last 10 games.

- The biggest difference between these teams is goal scoring. Allen is ranked #6 averaging 3.71 goals per game. Adirondack is ranked #22 averaging 2.88 goals per game. The teams are closer in goals allowed with Allen ranked #8 (2.96) and Adirondack ranked #13 (3.20).

- Comparing Allen's road and Adirondack's home special teams percentages shows both teams struggle on the power play. Allen is at 10.6% while Adirondack is at 12.5%. The Americans have an advantage on the penalty kill 87.2% to 79.5%.

- Scoring first is always a key to victory and even more so with these teams. They have a combined record of 19-4 when scoring first.

- If either game against Adirondack goes to overtime the advantage goes to Allen. The Americans have one of the best records in the league in overtime and they have had a lot of practice as 42% of their games have gone to overtime. In 10 overtime games Allen's record is 7-3. Adirondack has the worst record (tied) in the league in games that have gone extra time. In five games the Thunder have won one, lost two in overtime and lost two in shootouts.

- Allen's offense has been clicking, scoring 28 goals in the last six games for an average of 4.67 per game. Only once was Allen held under four goals. Balanced scoring has been the key. In the last six games, 10 different players have scored goals and nine of the 10 scored multiple goals.

- Allen has a few players dinged up as is always the case this time of the season but will get reinforcements with Jordan Topping and Turner Ottenbreit back in the lineup. Goalies Jake Paterson and Zach Sawchenko have been alternating games the last three weeks so if that trend continues Sawchenko should get the start tonight with Paterson in goal on Saturday.

OTHER COMMENTS

- Allen hasn't had a player that has been with the team the majority of the season average a point a game since 2016-17 when Chad Costello, Greger Hanson, David Makowski, Spencer Asuchak and Bryan Moore all averaged more than a point per game. This season five players are averaging 1.00+ points per game.

1.10 - Olivier Archambault
1.09 - Gabe Gagne
1.09 - Tyler Sheehy
1.08 - Les Lancaster
1.00 - Josh Brittain

- Going into this weekend, ECHL teams have played between 30% and 36% of their 72 game schedule. It is time for concern for the eight teams with winning percentages below .500 and time for optimism for the nine teams above .600. A winning percentage of .600+ is a guaranteed ticket to the playoffs. In the last five seasons one team (Atlanta 2017-18) made the playoffs with a winning percentage below .500. Here is the lowest winning percentage to make the playoffs in each of the last five seasons:

.528 - Jacksonville (2018-19)
.479 - Atlanta (2017-18)
.549 - Utah (2016-17)
.556 - Quad City (2015-16)
.528 - Wheeling (2014-15)

None of these teams made it past the first round of the playoffs and their combined record in the first round was 5-16-4-0.

-  All 26 ECHL teams are in action tonight with most Mountain Division teams taking on teams outside the division. The exception is Wichita vs Tulsa who play three times this weekend, all in Tulsa. The Oilers are seven points behind the Thunder who occupy the fourth playoff spot. This is a must win series for Tulsa.

Here is the "ECHL Today" with a preview of all 13 games tonight.  https://www.echl.com/en/news/2019/12/echl-today-dec-13

DID YOU KNOW: The Allen Americans leading goalie as measured by goals against average (GAA) for each season since they joined the ECHL.

2.47 - Zach Sawchenko (2019-20 thru 24 games)
3.27 - C. J. Motte (2018-19)
3.15 - Jeremy Brodeur (2017-18)
2.22 - Riley Gill (2016-17)
2.74 - Riley Gill (2015-16)*
2.59 - Riley Gill (2014-15)*

Seven Games in 10 Days Can Take a Toll - The Details and The Challenge Plus More

The logistics ECHL teams have to deal with are many times mind boggling. Here is an example of those logistics using the Allen Americans schedule over the next 10 days and the rest of December. While it is what it is and all teams have similar stories, it does seem like cruel and unusual punishment for these professional athletes. In my opinion playing seven games in 10 days with all of this travel puts their health at risk with a much higher chance of injury.

The Allen Americans left the Allen Event Center early this morning (around 4:00 am) embarking on the toughest part of their 2019-20 schedule that will have them play seven games in the next 10 days with plenty of travel thrown in for good measure. Here is what the next 10 days hold for the Americans.

- Today is a long travel day starting with a wake up call around 3:00-3:30 am to catch a 6:00 am flight with a stop in Baltimore on the way to Albany, NY. Arrival in Albany early afternoon and a bus ride to Glen Falls (90 minutes). Turner Ottenbreit, who has been in Iowa the last three weeks, will meet the team in Albany.

- The Americans will take on the Adirondack Thunder tomorrow (Friday) and Saturday where they will see two former players. Casey Pierro-Zabotel leads Adirondack with 10 goals. Alexandre Carrier, who played briefly for Allen in 2017-18, is also with the Thunder.

- The game on Friday has a regular 7:00 pm EST start but the Saturday night game has an early start (5:00 pm EST, 4:00 pm Allen time) because after the game the Americans have to bus to Brampton which is 400 miles away. They will play Brampton at 4:00 EST on Sunday. Three games in three days is always a challenge but throw in 400 miles on a bus between games two and three and it is beyond reasonable. If there is a silver lining in the Sunday game against Brampton it is the fact that the Beast will also be playing three games in three days with travel. Brampton will be in Reading on Friday and Saturday and their Saturday game doesn't start until 7:00 pm EST. Their bus ride back to Brampton is just as long if not a bit longer. A couple of tired teams will meet on Sunday afternoon.

- Two former Allen players are on the Brampton roster; Daniel Leavens, who is the second leading scorer for the Beast with 24 points (10G, 17A) and Matt Foget who played briefly in Allen in 2017-18.

- After the Sunday game in Brampton the Americans have two days off before playing Worcester on Wednesday. They would typically leave right after the Sunday game and bus overnight to Worcester. Several players from the Toronto area will have friends and family at the Brampton game on Sunday and they asked if the team could overnight in Brampton instead of leaving right after the game for Worcester. Coach Martinson agreed so the team will travel to Worcester on Tuesday, a trip of over 500 miles.

- Allen plays Worcester (7:05 pm EST) on Wednesday where they will meet up with the Americans leading scorer from last season, Dante Salituro. Dante has six points (4G, 2A) in seven games since joining the Railers a month ago.

- The road trip ends in Worcester on Wednesday, December 18 but the schedule doesn't get any easier. The Americans will travel home from Boston on Thursday and start another three games in three days on Friday. Allen will play the second place Rapid City Rush at home on Friday and Saturday and then travel to Wichita to play the Thunder on Sunday.

- It is exhausting just writing about what this team will go through over the next 10 days. If the Americans can get through these next seven games in good health and perform well, it will set them up for the second half of the season. Having two great goalies that can share the workload and possibly steal games when the team doesn't play well is a great asset in stretches like this.

- Don't forget after the Christmas break the Americans finish December with three games against Idaho, the first two in Boise and the New Year's eve game in Allen.

- Here are the winning percentages of the teams Allen plays the rest of December. The number in parenthesis is the number of games Allen plays each team:

.660 - Rapid City (2)
.646 - Brampton (1)
.558 - Idaho (3)
.540 - Wichita (1)
.520 - Adirondack (2)
.310 - Worcester (1)

OTHER COMMENTS

- Even though the Americans were winning early in the season their goal differential (goals for, minus goals against) was not very good primarily because of one game when they gave up 10 goals. Allen's goal differential has been improving ever since. Here are the top ECHL teams in goal differential which is a good indication of team success. It is no coincidence the top team in each division is also the top team in goal differential.

+32   South Carolina Stingrays
+20   Newfoundland Growlers
+18   Allen Americans
+16   Cincinnati Cyclones

- Yesterday I mentioned some players (Guptill and Sadek) leading the ECHL in various plus/minus stats. Here are a couple of the other players leading the ECHL.

Gabe Gagne - Gabe is tied for the league lead in game winning goals with five.
Tyler Sheehy - Tyler is tied for the points lead for rookies with 24 points (8G, 16A)

- With two higher penalty minute games recently the Americans have passed several teams in average penalty minutes per game. Allen is now averaging 11.54 minutes per game which ranks them #18.

- As Allen heads out on this four game road trip a reassuring stat is the Americans have the second best road winning percentage in the league at .727.

DID YOU KNOW: Allen will play four games against North Division teams in the next six days. So far this season Mountain Division teams have played just one game against the North Division. Utah lost to Newfoundland at home 4-3 in overtime.

Allen Wins, Game Recap, Sporfie Highlights, Steve Martinson's Post Game Comments, Martinson Closing in on #2 All-Time Wins and More

I returned home yesterday from a great week of pheasant hunting in North Dakota. It is hard to believe how much fun you can have in cold (-7), windy (25 MPH), and snowy (8" with drifts up to two feet) weather. Always enjoyable spending time with a lifelong hunting buddy and his amazing black lab, Jett.

- I arrived home in time to see the Allen Americans earn their 17th win of the season with a decisive 5-1 win over the Wichita Thunder before a Tuesday night crowd of 3593 at the Allen Event Center. With the win Allen retains its top position in the ECHL with 37 points.

- Allen played a solid game offensively, defensively and on special teams. The Americans scored five goals on their first 17 shots of the game and gave up just one goal late in the game. In his pregame interview coach Martinson said a key to the game was to get the power play going. The plan worked as Allen's first goal was scored on the power play. Tyler Sheehy found a seam and made a cross ice pass to Brett Pollock for a one timer. The Americans penalty kill was perfect, killing all three of Wichita's power plays.

- Goals scorers for Allen were Brett Pollock (9), Olivier Archambault (10), Alex Breton (3), Josh Brittain (5), and Gabe Gagne (13). Five goals by five different players proves again the strength of this teams is depth.

- As frequently happens against Wichita, tempers flared early and often. Both teams were assessed 34 penalty minutes which included eight fighting majors and eight roughing penalties. It was the highest penalty minute total of the season for Allen. The four fights last night were especially unique for the Americans. In their first 23 games they had a total of five fights.

- Jake Paterson stopped 29 of 30 shots for a save percentage of .967. With the win Jake's record is now 9-2-2-0.

- Here is part of the press release issued by the Allen Americans:

The Allen Americans (17-4-3-0) defeated the Wichita Thunder (11-9-5-0) on Tuesday night, 5-1. The Americans scored one goal in the first period and three in the second and cruised to their 17th win of the season. "We played well as a group," said Americans forward Gabe Gagne. "When we are playing our game it's tough for teams to beat us."

Wichita out shot the Americans 30-25 for the game. Gagne led the Americans with five shots on goal. Alex Breton had four shots. Wichita was 0-3 on the power play, Allen was 1-3.

Jake Paterson earned the number one star of the game stopping 29 of 30 shots. Paterson also earned his first helper since joining the Allen Americans, assisting on Alex Breton's goal.

Here are Sporfie highlights for three of the five goals:

Brett Pollock's power play goal:

Olivier Archambault:

Alex Breton:

STEVE MARTINSON'S POST GAME COMMENTS

"We had almost as many fights tonight as we have had all season."

"It was nice to get the five goals but I wish we had gotten the shutout. I didn't like the way we defended their goal. A couple of our forwards were weak on the play and gave Wichita the opportunity to shoot the puck hard from the top of the circle. I thought Paterson deserved a shutout and it would have been nice to help him a little bit more to get it."

"The guy who has been making the best power play passes is Tyler Sheehy. On the power play goal he showed deception and froze the guy in the middle and made that seam pass to Pollock. Sometimes we try to make the hard play when we are on the power play rather then take what is available."

"Lancaster and Ottenbreit did not play for Iowa tonight so we will see if we get one of them back."

"Jordan Topping just got back on Sunday and hadn't skated for eight days but he will be ready to go on the road trip."

OTHER COMMENTS

- Congrats to Josh Atkinson who completed his 25 game PTO and was signed this week to a SPC (standard player contract) by Iowa. It is unlikely he will see any time in Allen this season. It is a different story with Matt Register who was just signed to another 25 game tryout contract (PTO). That makes it more likely Register will be in Allen at some point this season.

- What a difference a year makes. Allen got their 17th win last night. Last season the Americans didn't get their 17th win until February 17th. That is 69 days earlier for the 17th win this season.

- Steve Martinson finished last season with 1003 career wins. Add the 17 from this season and Martinson is now at 1020 wins. He needs eight more wins to pass John Brophy (1027) to move into second place on the all-time win list by a professional coach. It will take a few more years to pass #1, Scotty Bowman, who is at 1244 wins.

- South Carolina beat Orlando 2-1 last night and have been the class of the ECHL thus far. The Stingrays are winning with defense having allowed just 44 goals in 21 games. South Carolina has a winning percentage of .857 which far exceeds the single season record of .806 set by the Louisiana IceGators in 2001-02.

- Alex Guptill still leads the ECHL in plus/minus (+17). Jack Sadek leads all ECHL rookies in plus minus (+13) and is third among all ECHL defensemen.

- Tyler Sheehy has at least one assist in every home game since November 8th. He is tied for the current home streak for games with an assist at five games. In those five games Tyler has nine assists. He is now tied for the team lead in points (24) with Gabe Gagne and leads the team with 16 assists.

DID YOU KNOW: Allen's record against Wichita this season is now 3-0-1-0. The Americans have dominated Wichita since joining the ECHL, not to mention beating the Thunder in the 2013 CHL championship. Allen's record against Wichita over the last five seasons is (41-12-2-2), which is a winning percentage of .754.

Allen Americans Head to Idaho, Barry the Blogger Heads to North Dakota

The Allen Americans hit the road again this afternoon as they fly to Boise to take on the Idaho Steelheads on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. The Americans are in the midst of the toughest month of their schedule. It started with a trip to Tulsa, next a trip to Idaho, then a fly and drive to Adirondack, Brampton and Worcester. At the end of the month a one game trip to Wichita and another trip to Idaho right after Christmas. Saw a post from the Americans that calculated the miles traveled in December at over 11,000, luckily most will be by plane.

- Allen will practice as normal today before heading to Boise this afternoon. As coach Martinson said after the Sunday loss to Tulsa, there were too many turnovers and too many penalty kill mistakes. I am sure both will get attention at practice today.

- It was a great weekend for defenseman Jack Sadek. On Saturday he scored his first pro goal and it was an important one as it tied the score 3-3 on the way to Allen's 6-3 win over Tulsa. Jack's plus/minus in the game was +3 which vaulted him into a tie for the best plus/minus in the ECHL for the month of November at +14. Here is the press release naming Jack and Florida's Logan Roe as the ECHL's Plus Performers of the Month:  https://www.echl.com/en/news/2019/12/allen-sadek-florida-roe-share-ami-graphics-echl-plus-performer-of-the-month

- In four straight seasons the Kelly Cup champions were high penalty minute teams but that trend changed last season with Newfoundland. Here are the penalty minutes and league penalty minute rank for the last five ECHL champions.

2018-19: 786 PIMS - Newfoundland (25th)
2017-18: 1377 PIMS - Colorado (2nd)
2016-17: 1415 PIMS - Colorado (2nd)
2015-16: 1189 PIMS - Allen (5th)
2014-15: 1644 PIMS - Allen (1st)

How do the PIMS numbers look this season? Here is a division by division look using winning percentage.

South Division - South Carolina is in first place and has the fewest penalty minutes (187). Florida is in second place and has the most penalty minutes (352).

Mountain Division - Allen is in first place and has the fewest penalty minutes (194). Rapid City is in second place and has the most penalty minutes (333).

North Division - Worcester has the most penalty minutes (393) in the division and is in last place. The team with the fewest penalty minutes (209) is Maine and they are in fifth place.

Central Division - This division has the most teams with 300+ penalty minutes (3) but is also the only division with two teams under 200 penalty minutes. The first place team (Cincinnati) has 335 PIMS and second place Fort Wayne has 361 penalty minutes.

The bottom line is you can win using different styles of play and it remains to be seen if a big, physical, high PIMS team will win this season or maybe a younger, faster, less physical team will
take the Kelly Cup.

GONE HUNTING

Late season pheasant hunting is a challenge

One of the best things about being retired is you have control of your time unlike when you were working. My life long friend and hunting buddy from Minnesota, Dave Carter and I are going pheasant hunting in North Dakota this week. The flight is booked (I will meet Dave in Minneapolis), the hotel (with heated kennel for the dog and indoor pheasant cleaning room) is booked and all I have left to do is pack. With lows in the single digits and highs in the teens predicted this week in North Dakota and it is always windy, I will have to go in the back of the closet to find the appropriate hunting attire.

Dave and I started hunting together 56 years ago and stomping through snow filled sloughs and cattails isn't getting an easier. Luckily Dave's black lab, Jett, is in his prime. As you get older and realize these hunts will not go on forever, you cherish the time spent with your best friend out in nature telling the same stories you have told for 50 years and laughing louder than ever.

That's a long drawn out way to say I am leaving tomorrow morning for a week of pheasant hunting in very rural and cold North Dakota. No blogs this week. Will be back for the Wichita home game on December 10.

The 70 something old farts head to the field again!

DID YOU KNOW: Allen has always been a good road team. Even with their losing road record last season, since joining the ECHL the Americans road winning percentage is .582 with a record of 98-72-9-9. Allen's home winning percentage is .669 on a record of 105-55-15-5.

Good Start, Bad Ending for Allen, Game Recap, Martinson's Comments, Baribeau Wins AHL Debut, Combs Heads to Germany and More

It was a game that started out well for Allen but ended horribly as the Americans lost 5-2 to the Tulsa Oilers on Sunday before a crowd of 4106 at the BOK Center. The Americans scored the first and only goal of the opening period and with a record of 8-1 when scoring first and 8-1 when leading after the first period, things looked good for Allen. When the Americans increased their lead to 2-0 at the 7:34 mark of the second period it looked like they were well on the way to their fourth straight win in Tulsa this season. However, from that point forward the wheels came off for the Americans as the Oilers scored five unanswered goals to win the game handily.

- Special teams proved to be the difference in the game. Allen had twice as many power play opportunities as Tulsa going 1-8 while the Oilers were 2-4. The Americans had the best road penalty kill in the ECHL going into the game giving up just one power play goal in 23 opportunities. Giving up two power play goals to Tulsa proved to be the difference in the game.

- Allen seemed to wear down as the game went on. They were out shot 14-7 in the third period and outscored 3-0 though one of the goals was an empty net goal.

- Goal scorers for Allen were Tyler Sheehy (6) and Gabe Gagne (9). Olivier Archambault assisted on both goals.

- Former Allen defenseman Miles Liberati had three assists in the game and is now averaging a point per game with 16 points (5G, 11A) in 16 games.

- Here is the game recap issued by the Allen Americans:  https://allenamericans.com/americans-close-out-two-game-set-in-tulsa-with-a-5-2-loss/

- Here is the game recap issued by the Tulsa Oilers:  https://tulsaoilers.com/oilers-bounce-back-big-defeat-allen-5-2/

- When I checked in with coach Martinson after the game he was short and to the point, "Too many turnovers and mistakes on the penalty kill led to quality scoring chances for Tulsa. We wasted a good start tonight."

OTHER COMMENTS

- It is important to keep the loss on Sunday in perspective. Allen is in the midst of playing nine of ten games on the road. Thus far they are 2-1 and will now head to Idaho where they take on the Steelheads on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Allen's road record of 5-2-1-0 is one of the best in the league. They need to clean up the issues from the game on Sunday and they will be fine.

- Goalie Dereck Baribeau got his first AHL start last night for the Iowa Wild. He stopped 30 of 32 shots to earn his first AHL win as Iowa came came back from a 2-0 deficit to beat San Antonio 3-2. The game had a distinct Allen flavor as three of the six defnesemen that played are under contract with the Americans, Josh Atkinson, Matt Register and Turner Ottenbreit. None of them figured in the scoring but Atkinson had five shots and Register had three shots.

- Jack Combs has left the Wichita Thunder and has already arrived in Germany. He will be playing for a team in Bad Nauheim, Germany, in the DEL2, which is the second level league in Germany. Bad Nauheim has a population of about 32,000. The team is currently in third place in a 14 team league. Below is the press release from Jack's new team as translated in Google translate. These always seem lose something in translation, for one Jack is happily married.

I know Jack is taking a lot of grief from many quarters on this move but I have a different take. I think when Jack was talking to ECHL teams everyone was well aware that he would help whatever team he signed with get off to a good start and when a team in Europe was in need of a scorer they would come calling and he would make the move. I know when Jack signed in Allen in 2014-15 and had 56 points (22G, 32A) in 32 games, coach Martinson was fully aware Combs would leave for Europe. Combs was signed to help Allen get off to a good start. When he left, Allen had that great start (25-5-1-2) and the Americans were well on the way to their first Kelly Cup championship. Jack did exactly what he was hired to do in Wichita. In just 15 games he became the  team's leading scorer with five goals and 10 assists. A team that wasn't given much of a chance at the beginning of the season has a .548 winning percentage and is currently in a playoff spot in the Mountain Division.

Here is the press release:

The Red Devils respond to the failures of Tyler Fiddler, Cody Sylvester
and Zach Hamill. Just tonight at 02:00 clock, as the employees of the office
from the start of the rink construction in Offenbach returned,
the signed, temporary contract of the former Bremerhaven and Iserlohner
Torjägers ago. Combs is currently in St. Louis with his girlfriend.

Jack Combs is on his way to Bad Nauheim today and is expected tomorrow
morning at 5:00 in Frankfurt. The 31-year-old, 183 m tall and 91 kg heavy
Combs comes with plenty of experience from 220 ECHL games with 278 points
(132 goals / 146 assists), and 165 AHL games with 79 points(40 goals / 39 assists)
in the spa town.

His first European stadium in 2016/2017 was the DEL Club Bremerhaven, where he
scored the most goals in the DEL main round with 27 goals. A strong 45 scorer
points in the end for the outside striker to book. After that, the scorer moved
to Iserlohn, where he was also successful with 34 points (22 goals / 12 assists).
Last season, Combs started the season a little later at the Swiss NLB Club Kloten.
There, too, he again proved his scorer qualities with 24 points in 25 games.

"We have been monitoring the market in recent weeks and have been directly
involved on Friday night to find solutions for the team as quickly as possible.
Of course, the failures weigh heavily, so it was important to us to expand the
squad in a timely manner through quality. Since Jack Combs and Bill Lochead
have an advisor from our immediate Nauheim environment, we quickly came to an
agreement ", says EC Managing Director Andreas Ortwein.

"Jack is a real scorer, who will certainly make us better and gives us new
opportunities, especially in powerplay. I'm glad it worked and that we now have
immediate support for the team, "said Head Coach Christof Kreutzer.

"We're also exploring the market and trying to get another player to
prepare for the next four to six weeksof games," says Matthias Baldys, outlining
the current activities of the sporting leadership.

Whether the top scorer can start tomorrow in Landshut for the ECN,
depends on the formalities to be done. Of course, the EC managers are trying
everything to make this possible.

So at the moment we have nothing but to say: "Welcome, Jumbo-Jack"!

- Jack Combs will be able to visit his best friend, Chad Costello, who plays for Krefeld in the top German league, DEL. Krefeld is about 150 miles from Bad Nauheim. Chad's team is in 12th place in the 14 team DEL. Chad is having another great season leading the league in scoring with 27 points (11G, 16A) in 23 games.

DID YOU KNOW:  I posted this on my ECHL Stats & Information page this morning which you can see if you like my ECHL Stats & Information Facebook Page or follow on Twitter at @ECHLStats.

No ECHL player has averaged an assist per game over a full season since Chad Costello did so three straight seasons (2014-17) averaging 84 assists per year and 1.17 assists per game. The remarkable stat about Costello’s three years is he never missed a game in those three seasons. Here are the top players in average assists per game this season (minimum 16 games):

.94 - Joseph Duszak, Newfoundland Growlers
.94 - Dan DeSalvo, South Carolina Stingrays
.90 - Peter Quenneville, Rapid City Rush
