Allen Shutout 5-0, Game Recap, Video Highlights, Coach's Comments, Fools Gold, ECHL Division Facts and More

Before I talk about the details of Allen's 5-0 shutout loss in Tulsa yesterday I wanted to share the thoughts I had during and then after the game. I am sure like many of you I was full of excitement after the outstanding three game sweep of Rapid City where Allen set season records for consecutive games won (3) and fewest goals allowed in a three game span (2,1,2). There were high expectations for the game in Tulsa even though the team was exhausted from playing three games in four days and having to travel to Tulsa on game day. When the game turned out the way it did I attributed the loss to team fatigue.

- Then last night it dawned on me maybe the three game sweep of Rapid City was fools gold. Was Allen playing better or was the "improved" play because they were playing one of the worst teams in the league. Early in the season Allen was winning, but most of the wins were against Rapid City and Utah. Once Allen was playing better teams (18 Game Challenge) they did not fare well (3-12-3-0). I decided to look at all of Allen's 43 games this season. Here is Allen's record and point percentage (in parenthesis) against the other Mountain Division teams listed in order of current point percentage from low to high:

  • .381 - Rapid City (5-2-0-1, .688)
  • .402 - Utah (3-1-1-0, .700)
  • .583 - Idaho (0-1-0-0, .000)
  • .591 - Wichita (3-5-2-0, .400)
  • .614 - Tahoe (0-1-1-0, 000)
  • .636 - Tulsa (1-5-2-0, 250)
  • .690 - Kansas City (1-5-0-0, 143)
  • Games outside division (0-2-1-0, .000)

You add it all together and the Americans record against Rapid City and Utah is 8-3-1-1 (.692). Against everyone else Allen's record is 5-19-6-0 (.267). Another way to state this is 62% of Allen's wins this season have come against Rapid City and Utah.

- Allen has just three games remaining against Rapid City and Utah this season. Actually, none against Rapid City and three against Utah, all on the road. The bottom line is Allen will have to prove it is an improved team against teams it has struggled against and playoff teams from other division (Worcester and Jacksonville).

- Allen was shutout for the fifth time this season in Tulsa yesterday. The 5-0 loss was not the worst shutout of the season. Allen was shutout 9-0 by Kansas City and 6-0 by Indy earlier in the season. Nothing seemed to go right for the Americans. Here are some examples:

  • Allen gave up the first goal to one of the best teams in the league when it scores first (18-2-2-1).
  • Tulsa outscored Allen in every period (1-0, 2-0, 2-0)
  • Tulsa outshot Allen in every period (15-9, 15-8, 17-10) for a total of 47-27.
  • Allen was 0-2 on the power play, Tulsa was 1-4.
  • Two former Allen players (Tyler Poulsen, Duggie Lagrone) scored goals and Easton Brodzinski contributed an assist.

 - Here are the video highlights that only include the five Tulsa goals: https://echl.com/videos/allen-americans-vs-tulsa-oilers-feb-2-2025

- The team will take the day off today and then prepare for Wichita who will be in Allen for games on Friday and Saturday. The good news for Allen, it has played better against Wichita than the other top five Mountain Division teams. (3-5-2-0).

COACH'S COMMENTS

- I had a chance to ask coach Ferguson a few questions that he was kind enough to answer on the trip home to Allen:

Q: How much do you attribute the result today to team fatigue?

A: Well, fatigue shouldn't be used as an excuse. It is the ECHL, three games in three days and four games in five days are part of the gig. However, this is the third time since December 22 Tulsa has caught us on home ice at the back end of a 3-in-3 where we had to travel in. Also, they played on the 25th (Saturday) and not again until playing Wichita at home the last two nights.

It took us 10 minutes to get into the game. They had the jump from the opening faceoff and we were caught watching.

Q: I know Tulsa throws the puck at the net from everywhere, but 44 shots allowed is a lot. Time of possession in your defensive zone seemed off the charts. What is your take?

A: We weren't as clean breaking out as we were in the previous games at home. It was a variety of factors, lack of execution on tape to tape passes, not good enough on the walls where they came away with too many pucks and we couldn't stop the motion in our defensive zone. We did a lot of puck watching and not reacting.

Q: Special teams didn't go your way again. Seems to be a trend. Will you give the PP and PK any more attention than normal at practice this week?

A: Yes, special teams will be a point of emphasis this week. We haven't had a lot of practice time lately, the player's reps have been in games. We will get to work on it this week.

Q: Any other thoughts on the Tulsa game?

A: It was a funny game, they were buzzing early and then we hit three posts from the 10 minute mark to the end of the first period. Puck luck was not on our side. We had a good push early in the second period, but then got hemmed into our zone at the end of the second period and the puck ended up in the back of our net. We took too many stick penalties again, we have to eliminate those.

Allen Sweeps the Rush, Game Recap, Video Highlights, Post Game Comments, Allen vs Tulsa Preview and More

It was an exciting night in the Mountain Division with a lot of points earned last night. Four games, all went to overtime and the four home teams (Allen, Kansas City, Tulsa, Utah) came out the winner. None of the overtime games were more exciting than the Americans come from behind 3-2 win over Rapid City.

- The first period was scoreless with both teams having multiple power play opportunities. Rapid City had the shot advantage 13-6. The second period has been Allen's Achilles heal numerous times this season and it was again last night. Rapid City scored the first goal of the the game early in the period (2:38) and took a 2-0 lead with a shorthanded goal at the 11:09 mark. The Rush had numerous shorthanded goal opportunities in this series and finally made the Americans pay. It was Rapid City's league leading (tied) seventh shorthanded goal. It was Allen's sixth shorthanded goal allowed. Only four ECHL teams have allowed more shorthanded goal.

- To say it looked bleak when Allen went onto the second intermission losing 2-0 would be an understatement. Allen's record this season when trailing after the second period was 1-18-2-1 and the one comeback win was from a one goal deficit. Nobody told this resurgent Americans team they couldn't come back.

- The third period belonged to the Americans. It looked like the Americans had finally scored a goal at the 4:09 mark, but the referee waived off the goal and called a penalty. It finally happened at 13:11 when Mark Duarte scored his 16th goal of the season. You could tell at that point all the momentum was with Allen. Just 80 seconds later the Americans tied the score 2-2 and it was a power play goal, which had struggled in this series 1-13 (7.7%), that got the job done. If you watch the replay you will see Polino take a one-timer from the circle that hits the Rapid defender at the net in the helmet. He drops to the ice as does the puck. Spencer Asuchak was all alone in front and put the  puck in the back of the net.

- There was still over five minutes remaining in the game when Allen tied the score. Both teams took penalties, but Rapid City had the better opportunities taking the last five shots of the game.

- Extra time has not been kind to the Americans this season. Last night was the 11th extra time game. Of the first 10 the Americans won two, lost seven in overtime and one in a shootout. That computes to an extra time point percentage of just .273. Only two other ECHL teams have a lower point percentage.

Last night Allen was the better team in overtime. Rapid City managed just one shot to three for Allen including the game winner by Kyle Crnkovic at the 2:08 mark. As Kyle said when he was talking to the season ticket members after the game, "We had a 2-on-1 with Watts and myself and the defender was taking away Watts so I ended up shooting and it went in. For Crnkovic it was back to back game winning goals. Kyle now leads the Americans in game winning goals with four.

- Here are the game recaps from both teams and the video highlights:

- Dylan Well continued his outstanding play with numerous outstanding saves. For the third straight game his save percentage was above .950. Last night he saved 40 of 42 shots for a GAA of 1.93 and a save percentage of .952. It has been a Goalie of the Week performance by Wells already and Allen plays one more game today. After his performance the last three games I would assume it will be his choice if he wants to play again this afternoon. It is very hard to play three games in three days with travel and an early start (3:00 pm) in game three. Here are Dylan's stats this week:

  • Wednesday - 2.00 GAA, .957 save percentage
  • Friday - 1.01 GAA, .969 save percentage
  • Saturday - 1.93 GAA, .952 save percentage

POST GAME COMMENTS

- Coach Ferguson brought Kyle Crnkovic to his post game meeting with the season ticket members. It was another standing room only crowd as these are becoming more and more popular. Here is what they had to say:

"I think you got your money's worth tonight. It was kind of a weird game. The referee must have gotten a new whistle and was testing it out.".....Ferguson

"They had two fluky goals. One from below the goal that bounced off the back of the goalie and the other was a shorthanded goal where we had a little miscommunication.".....Ferguson

"I thought we played pretty well 5-on-5 and we need to do more of that. Our power play had a great goal to tie the game up late. I know they have been pushing and pushing and pushing to score one and it was awesome to see.".....Ferguson

"It was a great team win. We won the race to three goals again and things ended up on the right side  tonight.".....Ferguson

"It felt unreal to come back like that and do it in front of a home crowd. You gave us energy all night and there is no better feeling than winning a game like that.".....Crnkovic

"On our power play we have one unit that is all forwards. Usually they score for us. They have been playing together on the power play for the last 15 or so games. Our other unit does have a defenseman.".....Ferguson

"We did lose a defenseman halfway through the second period and that is very taxing on the five remaining. Those were some hard minutes because we had so many penalty kills. Guys were going constantly and it was a gutsy performance by our defensemen tonight.".....Ferguson

"The rule on the game misconducts for fighting states you can't fight after a whistle during a legal line change. The league doesn't want any crap going on between the whistles. However, there was a lot of crap tonight. Credit to our guys for pushing through. I think Rapid's game plan was to get under our skin a little bit and it worked. But we hit that refresh button in the third period and the guys really pushed and came back.".....Ferguson

"On my goal there was kind of a scramble in our end. To be honest we were probably out there a bit too long. After a good save by Wells, me and Watts had a 2-on-1 and they know he is a good shooter so they tried to take him away a little bit so I thought I would shoot it and thankfully it went in.".....Crnkovic

"Tomorrow it will be three games in three days for both teams. We will get on the bus early tomorrow and head to Tulsa and our goal is to get right into the game. Tulsa plays hard, their forwards are quick and our mindset has to be there is only one player that has to play 60 minutes and that is the goalie. The other players just have to play their 12-15-18 shifts and you just have to get thorough those. It is going to be a battle day for sure, but that is the way this league crumbles sometimes and we will be ready for it.".....Ferguson

"I noticed in the second period Rapid City started coming down our walls a lot on our wingers and that puts more stress on our wingers to get the puck out. We didn't handle that stress in the second period. We were getting hemmed in, we iced the puck, so then we were out there tired, we had to take those defensive zone faceoffs and they were winning the faceoffs. Credit to them as they worked hard and they have some long, rangy defensemen that come down the wall.".....Ferguson

ALLEN VS TULSA PREVIEW

- It seems like cruel and unusual punishment after the tough series against Rapid City that the Americans had to get up early this morning and get on a bus to travel to Tulsa. No time for proper rest and recovery and then sitting on a bus for a few hours. No doubt there is more risk of injury to players in this situation. Yes, Tulsa will also be playing three games in three days, but they didn't play on Wednesday and have been at home all week. Bottom line is this will be a tough task for the Americans.

- Allen has struggled against Tulsa this season, The Oilers are 6-1-0-0 against the Americans, though two of the losses were in overtime.

- As you would expect the stats heavily favor Tulsa who has a .628 point percentage compared to Allen's .405. Here is a comparison:

  • Tulsa averages 3.5 goals per game, Allen 2.6
  • Tulsa allows 3.0 goals per game, Allen 4.0
  • Tulsa takes 38.5 shots per game, Allen 28.1
  • Tulsa allows 30.7 shots per game, Allen 39.3
  • Tulsa's power play percentage is 21.4%, Allen's is 19.5%
  • Tulsa's penalty kill percentage is 82.2%, Allen's is 79.5%
  • Tulsa's point percentage when they score 1st in .841, Allen's is .475

 - You look at all of the stats it is pretty clear on paper Tulsa has a huge advantage in the game this afternoon, but fortunately they don't play games on paper. Both teams are on three game win streaks.

- All the typical keys to the game apply, but first among equals for the Americans is getting off to a good start. Tulsa is almost unbeatable when it scores the first goal of the game with a record of 17-2-2-1.

- Some nice streaks for Allen players on the line today:

  • Kyle Crnkovic has a point in six straight games (4G, 5A).
  • Spencer Asuchak has six goals in the last four games.
  • Brayden Watts has six assists in the last four games.

OTHER COMMENTS

 - How rare was coming back from a 2-0 deficit in the third period. Allen and Rapid City had a combined record of 1-39-5-1 when trailing after the second period prior to last night.

- A few firsts were accomplished with the win last night:

  • First series sweep of the season.
  • First three game win streak of the season.
  • First time Allen has allowed fewer than three goals in three straight games.
  • First time Allen has had 30+ shots in five straight games.

- All three teams in the "Best of the Rest" sweepstakes earned points last night, but Allen not only maintained its lead, but crossed the .400 point percentage level for the first time in over a month. Here are standings:

  • .405 - Allen
  • .402 - Utah
  • .381 - Rapid City

DID YOU KNOW: It was a great night in the ECHL last night. 28 of the 29 teams were in action (14 games). Here are the stats:

- 14 games with average attendance of 6828.
- 50% of the games, 7 of 14, went to overtime.
- 5 of the 7 overtime games were won by the home team.
- All 4 Mountain Division games went to overtime with the home team winning them all.
- The margin of victory was 2 or fewer goals in 11 of the 14 games.

Allen wins 4-1, Game Recap, Video Highlights, Comments from Coach and Owner, Tonight's Preview, Leading Goal Scorers and More

The Allen Americans beat the Rapid City Rush 4-1 last night to make it two straight home wins. There was a lot to like about the game. Here are a few of my thoughts:

  • Allen allowed just one goal for the first time since last November.
  • Allen allowed two or fewer goals in back to back games for only the second time all season.
  • Allen scored first and never relinquished the lead.
  • Allen led 2-0 after the first and second period. Rapid City is 2-13-0-1 when trailing after the first period and 0-21-3-0 when trailing after the second period.
  • Allen held Rapid City to 32 shots, fewest of the seven games played this season.
  • Allen has won back to back home games for only the second time all season.
  • Allen's two game winning streak is the longest of the season (accomplished four other times) with a chance for three straight tonight.
  • With the win last night and Utah's loss to Idaho the Americans moved from 8th place in the Mountain Division to 6th place (by point percentage).

- If you haven't had a chance to look at the video highlights take a close look before you read the rest of the blog as the highlights really tell the story of the game. https://echl.com/videos/rapid-city-rush-vs-allen-americans-jan-31-2025

- Rapid City had no answer for Allen's top line of Crnkovic, Asuchak and Watts. They scored all four goals and the player without a goal (Watts) had three assists and was dominate when he had the puck. This line has been great all season and will hopefully be kept together after splitting them up at times in the past. It is hard to aggregate this stat, but by my calculation when this line plays together the Americans record is 11-10-6. When they don't play together Allen's record is 1-11-2. I think you will see this line together the rest of the season.

- First goal: This was a pretty tic-tac-toe goal that was made by Watts. With had defender draped all over him but made a perfect pass to Kulakov who passed to a wide open Asuchak who buried the puck for his 14th goal of the season.

- Second goal: The video highlight doesn't do this goal justice. This is a play the team tries periodically and it worked to perfection last night. It started with Asuchak winning a faceoff  to Brassard who deliberately iced the puck because he knew Watts would beat the defender down the ice. Watts made another perfect pass to Crnkovic who was streaking in from the slot and tipped the puck by the goalie. The big breakdown on that play was the defender cover Crankovic, who let Kyle get to the net. I asked Asuchak about the play after the game because he started the play though he didn't get an assist. Here is what he had to say, "I call it the Sedin twins play as they used to do it all the time in Vancouver. I used to watch them almost every game. Crank might be to young to have seen them make that play. haha"

- Third goal:  Maybe my favorite goal of the night because it was one of those dirty goals coach Ferguson keeps talking about. Once again Watts had the puck on his stick and took it to the goal. His entire line was at the net hacking and whacking at the puck before Asuchak scored. Allen needs more of those type of goals to be successful.

- Empty net goal: No surprise Watts was in the middle of this goal as well. He drew the defender to himself along the boards and flipped the puck to Asuchak who was streaking toward the net. Watts looked as happy as Asuchak when the hat trick goal went in. When was Asuchak's last hat trick? This one will win you a trivia contest. It was on December 2, 2015 and it was with the AHL Chicago Wolves. A fun fact on his third goal, which came late in the third period, is the only assist on the goal was from another former Americans player, Jacob Doty. Not many ECHL players, past or present, have an AHL hat trick on their stat sheet. The only other Asuchak hat trick I could find in the archives was when Allen was playing in the Central Hockey League. On March 21, 2014 Spencer had a hat trick against the St. Charles Chill. Included in his three goals was a shorthanded goal. His stat line was five points (3G, 2A) and +4.

-  The top line's total for the night was nine points (4G, 5A) and +11. Asuchak scored his 14, 15 and 16 goals. Crnkovic scored his 10th. They are the top three scorers on the team.

  • 43 points (15G, 28A) - Watts
  • 39 points (10G, 29A) - Crnkovic
  • 32 points (16G, 16A) - Asuchak

Talk about spreading the wealth. Watts lead the team in points, Asuchak leads the team in goals and Crnkovic leads the team in assists.

- Here are the game recaps from both teams:

- Dylan Wells was excellent in goal again. The only goal Rapid  City scored was on the power play. He stopped 31 of 32 shots for a .969 save percentage after a .957 save percentage on Wednesday. Wells had two very rough outings to begin the season. Since then he has played in nine games games with a record of 6-1-0-1 and a .935 save percentage.

POST GAME COMMENTS

Coach Brett Ferguson and team owner Myles Jack spoke with the season ticket holders after the game. It was a standing room only crowd with lots of energy and enthusiasm in the room. Here is what they had to say:

"We have been talking lately about winning the race to three goals. We want to win games 3-2. Tonight it  was 3-1 and then the empty netter to made it 4-1.".....Ferguson

"We still have to dial in our details in our own zone a little bit. We took some excess penalties, but I thought we were the better team 5-on-5. We spent a lot of time in our offensive zone.".....Ferguson

"We established a ground game to use a football term. Down low below the goal line, possessing the puck, using our big bodies and they had trouble getting the puck from us for a while.".....Ferguson

"We gave up 32 shots which was good, but we can get that number down if we stay out of the penalty box.".....Ferguson

"On the play where Crnkovic scored what proved to be the game winner they guys were just playing hockey. On that play Rapid City backed up and gave Brassard a little bit of time and he saw Watts flying so he iced the puck knowing Watts would win the race and Crank (Crnkovic), the little energizer bunny, was going and going up the ice. It was an unbelievable play by Watts. He was very noticeable tonight. The puck was always on his stick. It was great that Spencer got the hat trick and I loved that. The game that Watts played overall, in his own zone and along the walls was unbelievable.".....Ferguson

"Gavin might be out for a little bit. Not every time you go down does it mean the fight is over. It is a tough lesson for him to learn as a first year guy. He is a tough kid, an Air Force kid, had-nosed and he got banged up a little bit. We will call it an upper body injury.".....Ferguson

"I liked what I saw out of Powell tonight. He wasn't getting the ice time he probably deserved in Kansas City. He had two unfortunate penalties in the game. One was just him being bigger and stronger than the other guy. For whatever reason we always end up on the wrong side of the penalty ledger. He was +3 in the game and I think he will fit in well on our blue line.".....Ferguson

"Coach Ferguson has been great for the guys, great for the organization. He has my full support.".....Jack

"We are trying to play harder and be tough to play against. Like we have talked before in here we are where we are in the standings. There is only one way to go. I talked to Barry today and he gave me a good analogy of playing like a pack of wolves. We kind of used that tonight. We were on the hunt for the puck, we are hunting to get it back.".....Ferguson

"Wells was great in goal again. He has a very calming influence in goal. We have a youngish team even though we are trying to get a little bit older. When you have a veteran goalie like Wells he so calm. Shots hit him, he covers them, he makes the saves, he is sticky. If anything lays in front of him I thought our defense did a great job of clearing the puck out.".....Ferguson

"A big emphasis has been winning the board battles. To me that is also being tougher to play against. The game of hockey is 60 minutes of one on one battles all over the ice. Usually if you win more of those battles good things are going to happen. The walls are where the puck is the most a lot of nights.".....Ferguson

"We have talked in here a couple of times we want to be tougher to play against. Or philosophy is nobody touches our goalie and if you do you are going to get smacked. Unfortunately sometimes you take a penalty but those are the ones you kill.".....Ferguson

"My main objective when I purchased the team was doing what is best for the organization. We had some disagreements with folks and I decided from this point forward I am going to do what is best for the organization and that is the main thing. Moving forward the objective will be to see great hockey in Allen and win a championship. That is my goal.".....Jack

"The situation got into some legality issues, but we came out ahead. At the end of the day all I wanted was what is best for the organization.".....Jack

"I will say from the hockey side of the organization, anything we have asked for, Myles has gone above and beyond. It starts in our dressing room in adding workout and recovery equipment. It has been awesome having an athlete, a professional athlete, a very successful professional athlete, overseeing us rather than, no offense, some paper pushers. Myles gets it and absolutely wants the best for us as a team, us as an organization and us as a whole. It has been great to see."....Ferguson

TONIGHT'S PREVIEW

- The key for tonight would be more of the same with the exception of special teams. Here were the keys from yesterday:

  • Good start, don't play from behind.
  • Win the special teams battle. Allen has the better power play despite the poor showing in Rapid City. Take advantage on special teams.
  • Do a better job on breakouts.
  • Protect the offensive and defensive blue lines and avoid turnovers.
  • Get good goaltending.
  • Stay out of the penalty box.
  • Play physical

- The Allen power play was scoreless again making it 1-13 (7.7%) in this series. Rapid City's only goal was on the power play. The Rush have scored at least one power play in all four games of this series. The total is 5-17 (29.4%). When I asked coach Ferguson for a comment about special teams this morning this is what he had to say, "We have to stay out of the box and play 5-on-5 hockey. That is where we have played our best and they had trouble handling us down low in the offensive zone. No more stick penalties!"

- The lineup tonight will be the same as last night with the exception of recently acquired forward Kamerin Nault (#11) replacing Will Gavin who was injured in a fight last night and will be out a while. Here is the lineup for tonight:

(F)
#16 Crnkovic-#26 Asuchak-#92 Watts
#25 Westcott-#89 Polino-#8 Duarte
#14 Guy-#17 Jacobs-#9 Isaacson
#11 Nault-#84 Gorman-#24 Blaisdell

(D)
#5 Wilson-#82 Fraser
#3 Powell-#23 Brassard
#55 Johnson-#66 Kulakov

(G)
#39 Wells
#35 Thornton (BU)

- It will be back to a one referee game tonight and the referee will be #6 John Lindner. The linesmen will be #76 Daniel Barnes and #48 Trent Williams. Lindner was the referee on Wednesday when Allen had to kill four third period power plays. Hopefully the penalty calls will be a little more even tonight.

OTHER COMMENTS

- It didn't take long for Hank Crone to have an impact after being out for a month with an injury. Playing in his first game for Idaho since December 31, he scored the overtime game winner last night in a 2-1 win over Utah. Despite missing a month Hank sill leads Idaho with 38 points (11G, 27A) in just 31 games. That is a points per game average of 1.23.

- While Allen is now "The Best of the Rest" the top five teams continue to battle for the four playoff spots. Kansas City keeps threatening to break away from the pack. Here are the top five in point percentage order. Games remaining for each team is in parenthesis:

  • .683 - Kansas City (31)
  • .619 - Tulsa (30)
  • .616 - Tahoe (29)
  • .593 - Wichita (29)
  • .585 - Idaho (31)
Allen isn't going to be able to catch the top five, but the Americans can certainly play spoiler. Here are the games remaining between Allen and the top five:

Allen vs Rapid City Preview, ECHL Average Attendance, Overseas Deadline, My Comment on Comments, Hottest ECHL Teams and More

It is game day for the Allen Americans as they continue their five game series against Rapid City. Allen lost 4-3 in a shootout in game one, lost 8-4 in game two and won 3-2 in game three. As important as the 3-2 win on Wednesday was to snap the Americans seven game losing streak, if Allen doesn't followup with another win tonight, they will lose the series and gain no ground in escaping last place. As a reminder, the three worst teams in the ECHL by point percentage reside in the Mountain Division and Allen is the worst of the three at .375.

- Here is the good news and bad news from the first three games of the series:

  • Allen is ranked #22 in average shots per game (27.93), but in this series they have had 39 (season high), 36 and 35 shots. A big improvement.
  • Allen is dead last in the ECHL in average shots allowed (39.43). Rapid City had 37, 39 and 46 shots in the first three games (40.66 average).
  • Allen killed six of seven penalties in the win on Wednesday, but have given up a power play goal in all three games of this series. Rapid City is 4-13 (30.8%) on the power play.
  • Allen's power play on the season is better than Rapid City's (20.2% vs 16.2%), but Allen is just 1-10 (10%) on the power play.
  • Allen came back from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits on Wednesday, took the lead midway through the second period and never relinquished it.
  • In game one of the series Allen gave up 1-0 and 2-1 leads and scored with 35 seconds remaining in the game to send it to overtime. They ended up losing in a shootout.
  • Allen's save percentage was .957 in the win on Wednesday, .917 in the shootout loss in game one and .794 in the 8-4 loss in game two.
  • The team with the lead after the second period won all three games of this series. It is close to a guarantee the team trailing after the second period will lose. The Americans have one win all season when trailing after the second period, Rapid City has none. Allen's record when trailing after the second period is 1-18-2-1, Rapid City's is 0-20-3-0.

-  Here were the keys to the game from Wednesday. Allen won the game despite missing several of the keys. Here is how the Americans performed against the keys. It is doubtful Allen can win again tonight if the Americans need the goalie to stop 44 of 46 shots:

  • Good starts, don't play from behind. (Allen gave up the first goal and came from behind twice)
  • Win the special teams battle. Allen has the better power play despite the poor showing in Rapid City. Take advantage on special teams. (Allen lost the special teams battle)
  • Do a better job on breakouts. (Team achieved this key)
  • Protect the offensive and defensive blue lines and avoid turnovers. (Did okay)
  • Get good goaltending. (Great goaltending. Wells save percentage was .957)
  • Stay out of the penalty box. (big fail, Allen had four power plays, Rapid City had seven).

- After listening to coach Ferguson and  defenseman Artyom Kulakov after the game on Wednesday, I would add physical play to the keys for the game tonight. As Steve Martinson used to say, a pack of wolves is better than one lion. Allen needs to play like a pack of wolves tonight.

- Here are coach Ferguson's keys to the game:

  • Power play has to be a difference maker and not a momentum sucker.
  • Clean up the chances around our net. Wells will make the first save. We need to help out around the blue paint.
  • Home ice advantage. We haven't played a Friday night at home in a while. We need to be ready to go from the puck drop and get the crowd behind us.

- Allen didn't give up a goal to Rapid City in the last 37 plus minutes of the game on Wednesday despite facing 40 shots in the final two periods and killing off four power plays in the thirds period. The changes coach Ferguson has made since taking over the team is to win more games with 3-2 scores. It is obviously a work in progress for a team that has allowed and average of 4.13 goals per game this season. Only Utah (4.23) has a worse average in the ECHL. If the Americans can hold the Rush to fewer then four goals tonight that would be a success.

- The game tonight is one of the 18 home games (50%) that will have two referees. Logan Gruhl (#29) and Tyler Hascall (#8) will work the game. Based on the Allen games theses referees have worked this year (alone or with another referee) they have called an average of seven penalties per game, so maybe more of a let them play style. As for the total penalties tonight you would have to take the over on seven penalties given Allen and Rapid City are playing for the fourth straight time and the physical play has been ramping up.

- I won't get the lineup until this afternoon but based on some of the comments coach Ferguson has made you can expect to see some lineup changes for the game tonight or tomorrow night. Forward Kamerin Nault (#11) and defenseman Jay Powell (#3) will both add to the physical game Allen is looking to play.

OTHER COMMENTS

- Coach Ferguson has said there is a possibility a player in Europe could end up in Allen. Nothing is imminent, but like all ECHL teams, conversations are taking place. It is difficult for teams like Allen to attract players from Europe, because they prefer to sign with teams at the top of the standings with a chance for a deep playoff run. However, sometimes relationships with a coach or player can sway a player to come to a team with little chance of making the playoffs. That is what would need to happen for Allen to attract a player from overseas and they would have to be the right fit for the Americans. The bottom line is it is doubtful Allen will sign a player from Europe, but not impossible. The deadline for players to return from Europe is approaching fast, February 17.

- The average ECHL attendance stands at 4814 with a range of 8976 at the top (Jacksonville) and 1583 at the bottom (Iowa). Allen's average is 4417. The ECHL average attendance last season was 4981. ECHL attendance always increases as the season progresses so it is likely the average attendance will surpass last season by the end of this season.

- If you follow the comments on the blog (I recommend you don't) you will see a constant dialogue (ad nauseam) about what should or will happen with the Allen coaching vacancy at the end of the season. I avoid getting involved in these many comments about how good or bad every coach is. Being a stat/fact guy I wanted to share this stat that I have shared before, not to change minds but to get the record straight. I think all would agree the goal of every team is to make the playoffs. Many teams (not in Allen) consider a season making the playoffs as a success.

Chad Costello coached two seasons in Allen and finished #2 and #4 in the Mountain Division during the regular season. He lost in the second round of the Kelly Cup playoffs in 2023 and the first round in 2024. How many coaches made the ECHL playoffs in 2023 and 2024 and won at least one playoff round. The total number is seven. If you have done better in the playoffs than 21 of your 28 peers I would say that is success.

- It is a full schedule around the ECHL tonight with 28 teams in action including all eight Mountain Division teams. If Allen wins and Utah loses the Americans will pass both Utah and Rapid City in points percentage and move into sixth place in the division.
  • Rapid City at Allen
  • Tahoe at Kansas City
  • Wichita at Tulsa
  • Idaho at Utah

Allen Snaps Losing Streak, Game Recap, Video Highlights, Coach's Comments, Hank Crone to Europe, Florida on Record Pace and More

The Allen Americans snapped their seven game losing streak last night with a 3-2 win over Rapid City. It was the fifth time in six games against the Rush this season the margin of victory was one goal. The one exception was Allen's 8-4 loss in Rapid City last Saturday. You have to believe that loss was a motivator for the game at home last night. Allen's record against Rapid City is now 3-2-0-1 with two more games on Friday and Saturday.

- It was an entertaining game with lots of twists and turns. Rapid City struck first with a power play goal  just 79 seconds after the opening puck drop. Mark Duarte had blocked two shots and was laying on the ice injured. A shot bounced off the pipe and Rapid put in the rebound. Duarte was helped off the ice but later returned to play.

- Allen tied the score a few minutes later (4:57) when Spencer Asuchak scored his 13 goal of the season on a beautiful tip of a shot from the point by Mike Van Unen. Allen dominated the first period after the first couple of minutes of play, outshooting the Rush 15-6, but the score was tied 1-1 at the first intermission.

- Momentum swung back in Rapid City's direction early in the second period (2:22) when a defensive breakdown allowed the Rush a goal into a wide open net. The second period has been an issue for Allen this season and when Rapid City took a 2-1 lead it made you wonder. I thought the most important sequence of the game earned Allen a 2-2 tie. Allen just finished a power play opportunity in which they had no shots. Rapid City ended up with a 2-on-0 breakaway with one of the players just coming out of the penalty box. Dylan Wells made a great save on the breakaway and Allen skated down the ice and scored. Colin Jacobs got the goal (his sixth) on a great backhand pass from Liam Gorman.

- Allen wasn't through with its second period scoring. There were 34 seconds left in the period when Hudson Wilson took what looked like a harmless shot from the point and beat the goalie. It gave Allen a 3-2 lead at the second intermission. How big was it for Allen to take a lead into the third period. Rapid City hasn't won a game all season when trailing after the second period. The Rush record when trailing after the second period is now 0-20-3-0.

- It wasn't easy for Allen to hold Rapid City scoreless in the third period. The Americans had to kill off four penalties as the referee called penalty after penalty against Allen. Goalie Dylan Wells was great all night but especially in the third period when Allen spent most of the period shorthanded. Rapid City outshot Allen 20-3 in the third period, but could not get the puck past Wells. He faced 46 shots and made 44 saves for a .957 save percentage.

- Allen's penalty kill was a difference maker in the game. After giving up a power play goal early in the game they killed six straight penalties. Allen's power play was 0-3 and continues to struggle. At the beginning of December the Allen power play was ranked #3 in the ECHL at 25.5%. Today it is ranked #10 at 20.2%. Still respectable, but not as potent as it once was.

- Here are the game recaps and video highlights:

COACH'S COMMENTS

- Coach Ferguson met with the season ticket holders after the game and brought along defenseman Artyom Kulakov. Here is what they had to say:

"We have had 2.5 practices since I took over. The players have been great, adapting on the fly. The work ethic and effort every night is great even though the results haven't been there. They have been dialing home some details that is starting to show.".....Ferguson

"I know it sounds like a cliche but we try to take it one play at a time. You can't live in the past. What happened on your last shift is over. We emphasize going north. Try not to turn it back toward our net. The defensemen are doing a great job of moving the puck through the neutral zone and keep going toward their net. More time in the "fun zone" helps.".....Ferguson

"Jared Westcott is a tenacious guy who averaged a point a game last season in college. I don't think he has fear going to the net. We need more of that to get some of those dirty goals. I like his skating and think he will help us out along the walls. When I talk about going north that means a lot of pucks along the wall that we put the onus on the forwards to win those battles.".....Ferguson

"It will definitely be more physical this weekend. We think the physical play works for us. Talking to the guys in the locker room we know we have to be that type of game to be successful. Good things will happen.".....Kulakov

"I think there is something to be said about team toughness. What I have been preaching is getting tougher around our net. Taking no crap around our net. We are tired of seeing our goalies getting bumped all of the time. Kulakov is a guy that plays tough every shift. Johnson is the same way. We just added Jay Powell who is 6'7" and might hit his head on the scoreboard going out. He is big, long and rangy and will play tough every shift.".....Ferguson

"We owe a lot to what Richardson has done for us. When Wells went up to the AHL and we brought Richardson he took over the #1 role. We have three games in three days this weekend and I would like to get him in. Stay tuned. He definitely deserves to play and his numbers don't lie.".....Ferguson

"We had to flush the 8-4 loss. Fergie has done a good job of telling us to forget about the past. We have a lot of home games coning up so we have to take advantage of that. They have shifty forwards who can shoot the puck. We have to be aware of that around the net, be meaner and move the puck north just like we did tonight. We played physical, moved the puck up north and the goalie made some big saves when we needed it.:....Kulakov

"The attitude in the first period was because we were sick of losing to them. There is not an option to lose anymore games to them. We need to be ready from the opening puck drop, be physical and mean and we will win the game.".....Kulakov

OTHER COMMENTS

- If you listened to the between periods interview I did with Tommy Daniels last night you heard me say Hank Crone was headed to Europe to play in the Swiss League based on someone telling me that at the game. When I got home I did some checking and Hank did sign with EHC Olten in the Swiss League, but it is for the 2025-26 season. I swapped messages with Hank this morning and he assured me he is staying in Idaho for the remainder of this season. He also shared he will be back in the lineup this weekend against Utah. He has been on injured reserve since being injured when Idaho played Allen on New Year's Eve. Here is the press release from his Swiss team on Hank's signing: https://swisshockeynews.ch/en/shn/men/swiss-hockey/sl/hank-crone-is-ehc-oltens-second-import-player-for-the-2025-26-season

- The "Best of the Rest" competition has tightened up again. Here is the latest:

  • .388 - Rapid City
  • .385 - Utah
  • .375 - Allen

- Cincinnati had a horrible start to the season and in mid December had a record of 3-15-3-0 (.214). In its last 13 games the Cyclones record is 10-2-1-0 (.846). After the poor start Cincinnati has a chance to make the playoffs, but still has some ground to make up.

DID YOU KNOW: The Florida Everblades are on pace to set an all-time ECHL record for average goals allowed per game. After 40 games Florida’s average is 1.93. No team has every allowed fewer than 2.13 goals per game for a single season. The Everblades could not only beat the all-time record, they could destroy it. Here are the top five all-time:

2.13 - Idaho, 2022-23
2.13 - South Carolina, 2017-18
2.17 - Louisiana, 2001-02
2.21 - Atlantic City, 2003-04
2.24 - Reading, 2004-05

Florida has seven shutouts thus far. The all-time ECHL record in a single season is 12.

Allen vs Rapid City Series Preview, Updated Roster, Upcoming Schedule, Mountain Division Goal Differentials, Rookie/Veteran Mix and More

I attended the Allen practice yesterday for the first time since before my trip and and you really did need a roster to tell all of the players. Best way to start this morning is share what I think is the up to date roster. I have included the number of games played for the Allen Americans in parenthesis for players with 15 or fewer games played. AHL contracted players are marked with an asterisk.

Goalies

  • #33 Luke Richardson - 14-day IR
  • #35 Anson Thornton*
  • #39 Dylan Wells*

Defensemen

  • #23 J.C Brassard
  • #82 Cole Fraser (13)
  • #55 Kenny Johnson (2)
  • #66 Artyum Kulakov
  • #3 Jay Powell (0)
  • #21 Mike Van Unen
  • #2 Quinn Warmuth - Reserve
  • #5 Hudson Wilson

Forwards

  • #26 Spencer Asuchak
  • #24 Harrison Blaisdell
  • #28 Brian Chambers - 14-day IR
  • #16 Kyle Crnkovic*
  • #8 Mark Duarte
  • #10 Will Gavin* (15)
  • #84 Liam Gorman
  • #14 Brayden Guy
  • #9 Nick Isaacson (14)
  • #17 Colin Jacobs
  • #11 Kamerin Nault - Reserve (0)
  • #89 Patrick Polino (10)
  • #92 Brayden Watts
  • #25 Jared Westcott (0)

- Here is the press release on Allen's two most recent acquisitions.

  • Defenseman Jay Powell was acquired from Kansas City for future considerations. From what I understand the futures Allen received from Wheeling in the Hardie trade was sent to Kansas City for Powell. He will wear #3. He will not be in the lineup tonight. https://allenamericans.com/news/2025/01/trade-alert-americans-add-big-defenseman-from-kc
  • Forward Jared Westcott was acquired from Orlando for future considerations. After finishing his college eligibility last season when he had 36 points (18G, 18A) in 38 games, he signed with Wheeling. In six games he had six points (4G, 2A). He has bounced around this season (Wheeling, Bloomington, Orlando) but the 6'1" 201 pound left shot forward could have an impact with Allen if given the chance. He will wear #25 and I expect he will be in the lineup tonight. https://allenamericans.com/news/2025/01/trade-alert-americans-add-forward-from-orlando

- Kameron Nault (#11) who was acquired from Idaho in the Ryan Gagnon trade was practicing yesterday. Nault last played in a game on December 31 for Norfolk. I would expect coach Ferguson will want him to get in a few practices before he is in the lineup.

- I won't get the lineup for tonight until this afternoon, but a couple of tidbits from practice. The two players on 14-day IR are both eligible to be activated. Richardson was eligible on January 24 and Chambers on January 22. I wouldn't expect neither to be activated for the game tonight, but you might see one or both of them activated for the three games this weekend. Remember, Allen plays Rapid City on Friday and Saturday, and then travels to Tulsa for a 3:05 pm game on Sunday.

- The game tonight will be the sixth of eight games between Allen and Rapid City. They will not play again this season after these next three games. How have they compared in the five previous head to head games:

  • Allen's record is 2-2-0-1
  • The first four games were one goal games, the last game was an 8-4 loss.
  • Allen has been outshot 191-144, but did outshoot the Rush 39-37 in one game.
  • Allen is 4-15 (26.7%) on the power play, but three of goals came in one game.
  • Rapid City is 4-20 (20.0%), including 3-6 (50%) in the last two games.

- Allen will be trying to snap a seven game losing streak, while Rapid City will be trying to extend a two game win streak. What will Allen have to do to be successful in this three game series.
  • Good starts, don't play from behind.

- There will be one referee for the game tonight, #6 John Lidner. The linesmen will be Aaron Schacht (#51) and Michael Miggins (#47).

OTHER COMMENTS

- Allen has a great opportunity over the next three weeks. Nine of its next 10 games will be at home. The one away game is to Tulsa on Sunday. Home games haven't been an advantage thus far this season. Allen has three home wins in 17 games, no other ECHL team has fewer than six. Allen's home record of 4-10-4-0 (.294) is far and away the worst in the league. The next closest home points percentage to Allen's .294 is .357 (Adirondack) .452 (Greenville). If Allen can better at home, the next 10 games will be a great opportunity.

- Mountain Division teams have goal differentials ranging from +38 to -63. The Allen Americans have scored 100 goals compared to division leader Tahoe with 151. Allen has allowed 163 goals compared to division leader Kansas City with 105. If the Americans are going to avoid last place in the division they will have to score more, allow less or do some of each. Here are the Mountain Division goal differentials:
  • +38: Kansas City
  • +25: Wichita
  • +18: Tahoe
  • +13: Tulsa
  • +1: Idaho
  • -40: Utah
  • -42: Rapid City
  • -63: Allen
Once again you can see the wide gaps between the top five teams and the bottom three teams.

-  If you are looking for some positives here are a few:
  • Patrick Polino has an assist in five straight games. That is the longest current assist streak in the ECHL.
  • Brayden Watts has an assist in his last 10 road games. That is the longest road assist streak in the ECHL this season.
  • Watts also has a 10 game road points streak (15 points). That is also the longest point streak in the ECHL this season.
  • Kyle Crnkovic has a current seven game road point streak (10 points), the second longest road current point streak.
  • Anson Thornton leads the ECHL with 741 saves.

- The Allen Americans have one home win since November 15. That was on January 8th, a 5-3 win over Wichita. Ironically, it was coach B.J. Adams last game. Nobody in the organization thought the team would have a seven game losing following the coaching change and win on January 8. It is hard to overstate how important a win tonight is for the Allen Americans. I don't predict wins, but I will predict Rapid City will get an inspired and motivated Allen team tonight.

- There are only six games on the ECHL schedule tonight. The only other Mountain Division game is the battle for first place with Tahoe (53 points) visiting Kansas City (52 points). Here is the ECHL Today with the previews: https://echl.com/news/2025/01/echl-today-jan-29

- It is hard to believe that with almost 60% of the Florida season in the books the Everblades are allowing an average of just 1.93 goals per game. That is blowing away the ECHL all-time record which is 2.13, which has been accomplished twice. By Idaho in 2022-23 and South Carolina in 2017-18.

DID YOU KNOW: Here is the rookie/veteran mix for the top five and bottom five ECHL teams. In general (with some exceptions) the top teams have fewer rookies and more veterans. The top five teams have a total of 46 rookies and 12 veterans. The bottom five teams have a total of 63 rookies and 7 veterans.

TOP
.750 - Florida (7R, 4V)
.743 - Trois Rivières (9R, 2V)
.718 - Wheeling (14R, 1V)
.692 - South Carolina (8R, 1V)
.690 - Toledo (8R, 4V)

BOTTOM
.359 - Allen (10R, 2V)
.385 - Utah (14R, 2V)
.395 - Kalamazoo (7R, 1V)
.397 - Rapid City (14R, 2V)
.427 - Adirondack (18R, 0V)

- Florida beat Kansas City in the 2024 Kelly Cup finals 4-1. The roster differences couldn’t be more stark. Florida’s playoff roster had five rookies and four veterans. Kansas City’s playoff roster had nine rookies and zero veterans.
