Martinson Post Game Comments, Asuchak Ties Record, Stats & More

It could have been the sting of losing a 3-0 lead and the game on Friday night, stellar goaltending from Mark Guggenberger, great special teams play or or the all around team first attitude of the players but the combination of all of these factors led to an impressive 5-0 victory by the Allen Americans over the Denver Cutthroats before an enthusiastic crowd of 4981 at the Allen Event Center last night. The win puts Allen in second place in the standings (tied with Missouri who beat Rapid City 5-1) with a chance to take over sole possession of second place with a win in Tulsa this afternoon (4:05 pm start).

MARTINSON POST GAME COMMENTS:

- Well, that was a little better. Our penalty kill was better tonight and it needed to be (Denver had eight power play opportunities to Allen's two). It seems like everytime Hendrikx checks someone he gets called for a penalty. The explanation from the referee on the charging penalty on Trevor was the ref saw it from the corner of his eye. The tape clearly shows Hendrikx coasted 15 feet before that check.

- On the disallowed goal by Lavoie the referee made the call the puck was kicked into the goal but as you saw on replay Alex got the puck with his stick before is was completely over the line. The referee told me he can't look up at the replay (it was looping on the video board) so I told him to go and apologize to Lavoie.

- Kerbashian I thought played a great unselfish game. He made some excellent feeds on those goals and several nice cross ice passes on the two on ones. I was really happy with Kale's game tonight.

- Dallas Erhardt is showing what we saw in him when he was recruited. He had a really strong game tonight. We had a good game all through the line up. Garrett Klotz made a nice pass on Kerbashian's goal.

- It is important to get into Tulsa tomorrow and get a win. Tulsa has played three games in a row like us so we need a good performance.

- Tonight Guggenberger looked like the all star goalie that we have seen in the past. The save he made on Bembridge that led to a two on one goal for us was a big time play. You have heard me say many times I am a believer in percentages and Guggenberger was victimized a lot in his earlier starts by 5 on 3 goals, goals deflecting into the net off our own players, and cross ice back door passes. He showed tonight why he is an all star goalie and he will get the start tomorrow in Tulsa.

- Physical hockey sells tickets. I am going to talk to the league about what I see is good clean physical hits being called penalties. It is not supposed to be soccer and you are allowed to hit. In the NHL you see them finish their checks, you see them market the top ten hits of the week and they are not called penalties. It is as if the referees want to make it a European league and remove the physical play. It seemed like tonight what was a penalty one way was not a penalty the other way. Bootland almost had his finger broken and his thumb was smashed and bleeding from a two hander but no penalty. I always say it is better to complain when you win so that is what I will do.

- The biggest difference in the game tonight is we killed off the penalties and we scored two shorthanded goals.

- We are going to Tulsa tonight (Saturday) rather than in the morning. We don't have access to our regular sleeper bus so we will take a coach bus as we thought is was better to get the guys to Tulsa and stay in a hotel rather than ride the coach bus tomorrow.

- Denver had three players called up today so they had a different line up tonight. I told our players we can't look at that because one line killed us last night and that line is still here.

- After the second period I asked the guys what their plan was for the third period and they told me the plan. The guys had a good plan for the third period, they stuck to it, and we got the shut out.

OTHER COMMENTS:

- There is a company called Narrative Science that uses data and creates a narrative story. The CHL apparently uses this software to write some of its stories. This software takes raw data and translates it into tangible narratives. Here is the story by Narrative Sciences written solely from the data from last night's game. Interesting.
Allen beats Denver 5-0 as Guggenberger gains shutout
Story by Narrative Science

The Allen Americans used a sparkling performance by Mark Guggenberger to take down the Denver Cutthroats, as the netminder did not allow a goal in Allen's 5-0 shutout victory. The Americans got the win behind a great game by Kale Kerbashian, who had one goal and three assists. Kerbashian scored 13:19 into the third period to make the score 5-0 Allen. Garrett Klotz picked up the assist.
Allen excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in eight chances. Allen additionally got points from Jamie Schaafsma, who also registered one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Allen included Gregor Hanson, Spencer Asuchak, and Jonathan Lessard, who each put in one. In addition, Allen received assists from Tyler Ludwig, Dallas Ehrhardt, and Alex Lavoie, who each chipped in one. Denver could not produce up to it normal offensive output. The Cutthroats put an average of 3.1 pucks into the net per game. Denver relied on a core group of players for most of its offense, as Garrett Bembridge, Steve Kaunisto and Aaron MacKenzie took 19 of the team's 34 shots.
Mark Guggenberger made 34 saves for the Americans on 34 shots. Allen incurred 24 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. The Cutthroats' Kent Patterson stopped 24 shots out of the 29 that he faced. Denver incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors.

- With a goal and three assists last night Kale Kerbashian continues to be the offensive leader in recent games. He has scored in four of the last five games and has ten points in those games (3 goals, 7 assists). He now has 35 points in 33 games (13 goals, 22 assists).

- With two shorthanded goals (Hanson & Asuchak)  the Americans now lead the CHL in shorties with eight. Spencer Asuchak sits a top the CHL by himself with three shorthanded goals.

- A key to success  was holding Denver's top line (Schwab and Bembridge) in check. Not only did they not score but Bembridge was -4 for the game and Schwab was -3.

- The Allen vs Tulsa game is the only action in the CHL today so a chance for Allen to gain ground on all of their competition. If Allen wins they will occupy sole possession of second place and be only one point back of league leading Rapid City. However, Rapid and Missouri will have two games in hand.

- The three stars last night were #1 Mark Guggenberger, #2 Kale Kerbashian, & #3 Greger Hanson.

- Congratulations to Todd Robinson who dished out his 1000th career assist last night in Tulsa's 7-2 win over Brampton. The game was tied 1-1 after two periods but Tulsa scored on six of seven shots in the third period.

- What a run for Arizona Sundogs goaltender Andrew Engelage who earned his third consecutive shutout on Saturday night in a 1-0 win in Quad City against the Mallards. The netminder’s scoreless minute streak moves over 200 minutes and is the fifth longest in CHL history sitting just more than a period and a half from the record held by Mark Guggenberger (done in 2011-12 with the Texas Brahmas).
CHL's Longest Scoreless Minute Streaks
238:31 – Mark Guggenberger, Texas (2011-12)
222:41 – John DeCaro, Bossier-Shreveport (2007-08)
222:01 – Shawn Silver, Indianapolis (2002-03)
217:52 – Mark Bernard, San Antonio (1994-95)
206:25 – Andrew Engelage, Arizona (2013-14)
Allen will have a chance to protect Guggenberger's record as the next game Arizona and Engelage play is against the Americans on Friday in Arizona.

- Don't forget Tommy Daniels will not be making the trip to Tulsa so no Allen Americans broadcast  this afternoon. If you want to listen to the game just go to the Oilers web site at tulsaoilers.com and there is a "listen live" button at the bottom of the page.

- A great night for attendance in the CHL as the 4981 in Allen was the smallest crowd in the league last night:
Quad City: 5834
Missouri:   5800
Tulsa:         5473
Allen:         4981

DID YOU KNOW: Spencer Asuchak's three shorthanded goals ties him for the franchise record for shorthanded goals in a season with four other players:
Jarret Lukin & Adam Pineault (2012-2013)
Dave Bonk (2010-2011)
Tobias Whelan (2009-2010)

  1. What a great game last night, and Guggenberger was impressive. Hope they carry that energy and high level play into today's game. Hoping Tommy is feeling better and is back with us soon. Thank you for, yet another, great blog.
