Allen Shutout 4-0, Game Recap, Video Highlights, Coach's Comments, Rematch Preview, League's Top Scorers and More

It was so good to see so many friends and blog readers at the game last night and chat about all things Allen Americans. You are my motivation for putting in the time to keep the blog going, so when you stop to share your opinions or ask a question it is reinforcement for me. Also, if you notice more errors in the blog this morning blame it on my lovely wife who opted to accompany our daughter to New Orleans for the Taylor Swift concert last night. I stayed up until midnight to get all the details so the 4:00 am alarm this morning was a struggle. Here we go:

- It is only two games into the 2024-25 season for Allen and things couldn't have gone much worse. The Americans are one of two ECHL teams (Indy the other) that have not earned a point. Allen is ranked #28 in average goals scored (1.00) having scored two goals in two games. The Americans are ranked #29 in average goals allowed (6.00) having given up 12 goals in two games.

- Last night Allen was shutout by Kansas City 4-0 and it could have been worse without some outstanding goaltending by 21 year old goalie Anson Thornton who limited the Mavericks to one goal in the first two periods while facing 30 shots. The Americans were outshot in every period with a final tally of 38-16. The 16 shots were the fewest in the ECHL thus far this season as was the two shots in the second period.

- Even though the Americans kept the game close, when Kansas City scored the first goal late in the first period it was an ominous sign. Since the beginning of last season Allen's points percentage when giving up the first goal is .286. When Kansas City scores first its point percentage is .818.

- After the Mavericks took a 2-0 lead early in the third period the Americans had numerous opportunities to cut the score to 2-1 but could not get the puck in the net. Kansas City scored two goals in the final five minutes of the game to make the final score 4-0. The Americans had no answer for Kansas City's top line of Andreev (#44), Morrison (#9) and Borchardt (#28) who scored the Mavericks first three goals. All three had a goal and two assists in the game.

- Here are the games recaps from the perspectives of both teams:

 - What will Allen have to do to be successful in the rematch with the Mavericks tonight?

  • Get off to a better start by scoring the first goal.
  • Narrow the shot differential from last night.
  • Win the special teams battle.
  • Get another goalie performance like last night.
  • Do a better job on Kansas City's top line.
  • Even out the puck possession time.
  • Avoid so many neutral zone turnovers.

COACH'S COMMENTS

- Coach Adams met with season ticket holders after the game to answer their questions. Here is what he had to say:

"I don't think there was a lack off effort tonight. We are still getting to know each other and learn each other. I am not making any excuses. We didn't play well in Tulsa. I thought our game was better tonight and grew as the game went on.We got hemmed in a few times because we didn't manage the puck in the defensive zone properly. I liked our third period resiliency and our push back even though we didn't score. The got some chances at the end because your going to give up opportunities when you are pushing to get back in the game."

"Dakota Seaman just got back in town as he had to get his visa done. He hasn't skated much the last few days. I don't want to put him in an unfair position in his first game. Obviously, toughness is a part of our division. We have some guys that are tough other than Seaman, but the opportunity hasn't arisen. I am not worried about that part of the game at all.

"We need more communication within the group to let each other know they have time and what they can do with the puck."

"I haven't seen the video but we came close to cutting the score to 2-1 in the third. I don't know if was lack of execution or puck luck around their net, but I am happy they way we played in the third period. It was more banging and north-south hockey.

"Thornton was great in goal, especially early in the game when he made a couple of big saves.  That is a good team over there and tonight was a great test for us in game two of the season. When you think about it we had only one preseason game and half of our players didn't play in it."

                                                                                                                                                                            OTHER COMMENTS

- Hank Crone scored the overtime winner last night as Idaho beat Toledo 4-3. The Steelheads tied the score with a minute remaining in regulation. Hank has seven points (3G, 4A) in his first three games in Idaho.

- There are two undefeated teams remaining in each of the four ECHL divisions. A couple of surprises, but most of these teams will be in the playoffs. Here are the eight undefeated teams:

  • North Division: Adirondack & Reading
  • South Division: Florida & Savannah
  • Central Division: Fort Wayne & Kalamazoo
  • Mountain Division: Idaho & Kansas City

- It will be a busy night in the ECHL tonight with 26 of 29 teams in action. If you have FloHockey a couple of games worth checking out:

  • Kalamazoo at Fort Wayne in the battle of the two undefeated Central Division teams.
  • Toledo at Idaho play the rubber match of a three games series between two of the top teams in the league. Idaho has won the first two games of the series, so expect some fireworks in game three.

Here is the ECHL Today with all of the previews: https://echl.com/news/2024/10/echl-today-oct-26

DID YOU KNOW: Here is ECHL Stats post for the day:

Talk about good starts! Yes it is very early, but four ECHL players are averaging more than two points per game:

4.00: *Alex Swetlikoff, Fort Wayne
2.33: Hank Crone, Idaho
2.33: Cade Borchardt, Kansas City
2.33: Michal Stinil, Wichita

*Swetlikoff was assigned to Fort Wayne by its AHL affiliate, Bakersfield, on Thursday and had four points (1G,3A) on Friday.

  1. LJ you let Hank go amongst many others.
    You hired an OHL coach.
    Seriously?
    You should fire yourself.

Barry, your efforts are appreciated as always.

  2. Well, being the second game of the season with a new coach and a new team, I'm not ready to put the noose around my neck yet. Do I think we're going to have a Championship season with a new coach and this team, no. Do I think we're going to be the cellar dwellars of the ECHL, no. Props to Thornton, he made some spectacular saves, from my perspective where I sit. It'll be interesting to see what happens tonight and how many people show up. Can't say I'm shocked by the lack of attendance, all things considered.

    1. Thanks! Allen Eagles had a home game, so attendance is usually low on those nights. Used to not schedule home hockey on home football nights

    2. Nah, irrelevant. People need to stop making excuses. It was a poor opening night attendance.

    3. very impressive opening crowd given the Allen football. It's either they open with a Friday against Allen football then a Saturday or a Saturday then a Sunday dud against the cowboys. Going the Friday route instead of the Sunday led to a way bigger crowd than they would have gotten on a Sunday. Props to LJ for that good call. Gotta give credit to her where it's due.

    7. Front office is posting a lot, so are arena and game day staffers. It’s ok. No issues either way. It’s just obvious they are defending things and their comments don’t make sense.

  3. I’ve been asking this question for five years. Why in the holy hell in this day and age can’t we see replays at the game? When the refs are reviewing a goal, why can’t we see a freaking replay. The cameras are there obviously, otherwise what would the refs be looking at? We have a serious issue with our team, living in the modern age in terms of our production at the game. Our season-ticket holders and fans deserve a better quality product from the production staff. I want to know what the hell is going on. Also why can’t we mic up the refs like a dozen other teams do? we are going to get our ass kicked all year and we’re going to stick with the guys. At the very least it would be nice to know what the hell is going on.
It would also be nice if we could time our entrances better coming out for a period. It’s just a melee of our team and the other team coming out at the same time. If you go to other successful teams games it’s a whole big ordeal, especially in the third period, When the team comes out. The teams come out with timed music and lights. I think the leader of the production needs to raise the bar. Also been saying this for years and so have tons of other season-ticket holders. If you do those kind of things people will come back. It’s not always about winning and losing to fill the seats. If something doesn’t change, I am done next year

    1. It's a minor pro league. They do the best given the little resources they have. Its it like season ticket holdrs r paying top dollar like other places, and its not like they have government money like HS football. ItS actually one of the better tech and experience arenas for this level compared to the roughriders or jackals

      Delete
    2. πŸ‘πŸ» a little planning, investment and execution. Problem is acceptance of the same old same old.

      Delete
    3. Echl rules don't allow them to show the replay while the play is under review. That was added about 5 years ago

      Delete
    4. You can't compare the Americans to the Roughriders. Much better staff and management over at Frisco. And the Jackals are so bad that they are not playing next season.

      Delete
    5. Right, but play it immediately after.
ECHL is about player development and entertainment.
Having the refs mic up would just be a little something different.

      Delete
    6. I’m not talking about other sports or other levels. I’ve been to dozens of other ECHL games on the road. With the exception of Rapid City they are all better than ours. Some by a mile. And I’m not asking to see exactly what the refs are looking at. But as soon as they figure out what the hell the decision is, I would like to see four or five replays. And I would like to see replay that actually makes sense and goals and interesting plays. Other teams do that. I’m not talking about the goddamn Dallas Cowboys or the stars. I’m talking about other ECHL teams. And I’m also including other ECHL teams having the ref minced. Technology is not even that complicated anymore to do that. It’s pure laziness and acceptance of mediocrity, like someone said above. And by the way ticket holders do pay through the nose at the Allen Americans. In more ways than just the seat prices. So I realize I’m bitching a little bit here, but I’m gonna put my money where my mouth is . If we were paying what Rapid City pays that I wouldn’t be asking. Period. I’m not even asking to be at the top. I would just like to at least be in the middle in terms of production.

They count STH sold and also have the ability to “print” tickets game day even if not given to anyone.
The “printing” shows a seat sold.
      A joke.

      Delete
    3. The desperation to sell tickets was clearly obvious. I received 2 emails this week from Allen with a link to free tickets to either game. And a ticket manager called my business early last week and offered us 25 tickets to either game. This is why we canceled our season tickets 2 seasons ago.

      Delete
    4. The ticket folks (there is one or two rockstars), under the guidance historically of Mydra and more recently Austin, have devalued the STH and have pushed free tickets to appease the ECHL on YOY attendance increases.

The STH devaluation is why the club languishes under 1800 STH or “Patriot Club” members.

They have devalued the offering, raised pricing and offered a product the same for free πŸ€”

      I’m a STH paying thousands.
My days are numbered because I can get these tickets for free, albeit a few rows back or in a different section. But save thousands in my pocket.

      Austin - wake up!

  9. I've been to see Allen play in Indy, Cincinnati, Kalamazoo, Ft Wayne and Toledo in the past several years. Indy plays at some old fairground stadium but it was a real decent game experience - great fan involvement/interaction. - like Allen games used to be.

Cincinnati and Toldeo were nice also. Kalamazoo was like attending a big funeral - but it was Sunday afternoon. Ft Wayne is different - old weird stadium, fans as disgusting as the Wichita fans and not much fan interaction unless being drunk and nasty as can be counts. Not the family oriented theme you see at most ECHL venues.

Bottom line it's double AA hockey. I've been to Allen for the play-offs the past two years and it was not even close to the experiences back in the day (2009-2016). The passion seemed to disappear.

      Who really owns the Americans?
      Why was Chad fired?
Why can’t that decision be owned with a proper explanation?
Why are my ticket equivalent being given away free?
Why does the game day experience YOY be “blah”?
Best announcer in the league though.

      We can’t have those thoughts/feelings?

I maintain BJ won’t last the season, and if he does, he’ll be fired in the offseason.

  12. After 2 games the idea of this team starting out 0-10 is looking pretty close to reality. Almost every single team sans the expansion Tahoe side seems to have improved in the offseason. The lackluster crowd,I’ve no room to speak as I wasn’t in attendance but it didn’t look good via Flosports. And the game day staff seem to just be “going through the motions” of a AA level arena experience which is far from what Allen showed in years passed. (I’ll just say it,I hate “sweet Caroline” but dammed if I didn’t say I enjoyed the lights off and the crowd singing along). While I do think the Americans can eventually pull something together,if the first 2 games are any indication,it will be few and far between. Keep up the good work BarryπŸ‘

      Zero business acumen.
Oops, sorry ran an ATT store and claims “Director” titles …. Lmao!!

      Myles money.
LJ has screwed things up royally.

    4. She has a business book. Obviously she must know what she's doing. Not easy to just buy and run a team. Otherwise everyone else here would do it!

    5. BJ 0-3 tonight.
      LJ 0-3 tonight.

One is here trying for success (he’ll get fired).
The other wouldn’t know success if it hit her in the face.
Yeah it all started with firing Costello. It’s continued.

    6. Business Book … that’s hilarious. Self promotion. How’s the book tour going? Ps. It’s non existent cause no one gives a phuk.

      Myles money honey.
      LJ didn’t buy the team.

    7. Maybe if y’all did a background check like I did about Myles & LJ at the beginning, you’d know what is really going on. Liens upon liens upon liens. Look it up. Yes it costs money to do that, but it will truly show you some of their character.

Ok I can’t let that pass. LJ best owner? Top 5? You have got to be kidding me. If Myles wanted to give her something to do, how about selling Avon? She knows nothing of hockey . Even less than any of the posters on here

    ReplyDelete
  33. She's been interviewed by a lot of big podcasts, even people at NHL Network. You think they would interview someone that didn't know hockey and business?!

Bumped into her yet at the Courtyard Marriott bar?
To hear the things she says it’s obvious in a minute she has zero hockey acumen and her business acumen doesn’t bounce far from that.
      Genuinely thinks we needed change.
      Genuinely a moron.

    3. She runs a hockey team. You think the team signs players, sells sponsorships, orders gear, books flights, etc by itself? She obviously has good business acumen. The show wouldn't go on if she just had no idea what she was doing.

      Delete
    4. You’re a moron.
You have no idea like some others on here.

    5. We see the players she hired - we see the coach/GM she hired - are you impressed?

    6. Joe hired the coaches not her I would imagine

    7. She doesn’t run shit. All the things you mentioned were already being done for years prior to her.

    8. Hired BJ Adams, who didn’t make a season in the OHL. We could stop there but there is waaaay more to the story.
There are a number of reasons for the player exodus not just because of Costello getting fired.
Kevin Sykes-Gilbert departed. He moved fast when he saw the writing on the wall and the dysfunction.
Who is next? Word has it Mydra’s resume has crossed more than one desk.

    9. Podcast - did you listen to that?
What a loud obnoxious individual she was on that, who clearly demonstrated she has no idea.

      Delete
    10. Nah, Joe influenced.
Myles lied, we all know that.
      LaSonjia fired Costello.

    11. Here the deal… Myles, LJ, & Joe didn’t have the balls to call & fire Chad. They made Jonny & Kevin call him to do it. Then Kevin & Jonny had the balls to have Chad call Gens to tell him he was let go after they just fired him. Facts

    12. Holy $hit.
      Really?
      That’s phuked up big time.

    13. Kevin was a joke and interesting that they have money now that’s he’s gone and he had to have the owners sign off on anything he did. Get your “facts” straight. Hysterical that you think Kevin call Chad

    15. If LJ or Myles did not fire Costello, then they are gutless wonders.

      Delete
    16. No one never said that LJ & Myles didn’t fire Chad, what was said was they had Jonny & Kevin call & do it. Also, your correct in saying Kevin called, it was a group call with Kevin on it with Jonny. Jonny is the one who had to tell him.

      Delete
    17. That’s disgraceful.
      Myles and LJ are weak.
I’m embarrassed to support this team owned by Phuken morons.

    2. Funny you should ask. Spoke with SJ briefly before the game and asked if she would stop by to meet my in-laws that were in town. Lovely woman, have met and spoken with her and MJ several times in the past year. She hugged me and said she would come by later with MJ. Must have slipped her mind.

Look if you think I haven’t mentioned the things I’ve said in my comments to MJ before, you would be mistaken. And if you think I get on a soap box and am not cordial , you would also be mistaken. I like the Jacks personally. They are nice.

      What’s your point?

Nice talking to you tonight also Barry.

I want Memphis Dave to stop by. Would love to put a face with a name.
