Allen Assigned Two Goalies from Tucson, ECHL Assignment Numbers, ECHL Goals for and Against by Division and More

We made it to Minnesota yesterday and will leave for North Dakota tomorrow (625 miles) for the pheasant opener on Saturday. As usual I woke up early (3:50 am) so thought I would post one last blog before a week of silence.

- Allen was assigned two goalies from Tucson yesterday:

Dylan Wells - the 26-year-old 6'2" goalie (catches left) was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in the 5th round (123rd overall) of the 2016 NHL draft. Here are his seven-year pro career stats:

  • 1 NHL game - 3.00 GAA, .923 save percentage
  • 60 AHL games - 3.20 GAA, .898 save percentage
  • 85 ECHL games - 3.58 GAA, .896 save percentage (Norfolk, Indy, Idaho)
One scouting report described Wells as a calm confident presence in the crease. One of Wells best abilities is to track the puck. His athleticism helps with second opportunities. He tends to kick rebounds to the corner, but sometimes lets them out in the slot.

Here is a video from 2022 that tells the story of Dylan's one NHL game:

Anson Thornton - while Wells is a seasoned pro, Thornton is a 21-year-old, 6'3" (catches right) second year pro with just 13 games played:

  • 4 AHL games - 4.10 GAA, .849 save percentage
  • 9 ECHL games - 3.77 GAA, .893 save percentage
Thornton is in the second year of his three-year entry-level contract with Utah. He had a great rookie camp with Utah. I saw this recap, "Thornton's day two performance at rookie camp caught the attention of Roadrunner's head coach Steve Potvin who shared Thornton was a standout at practice. As for where he will suit up this season, it's anticipated that he will spend more time in Tucson. However, it won't be a surprise if he requires a bit more time at the ECHL level.

Here is a video of Thronton from 2022 about his progression in junior hockey with some great highlights:

- The number of NHL/AHL contracted players assigned to ECHL teams continues to grow and will do so right up until the start of the season. Here are the latest numbers I compiled from ECHL transactions. Allen now has three players with the two goalies and forward Kyle Crnkovic. Here is the complete ECHL list:

  • 10 - Savannah
  • 10 - Kansas City
  • 9 - Wheeling
  • 8 - Kalamazoo
  • 8 - Reading
  • 8 - Cincinnati
  • 8 - South Carolina
  • 7 - Utah
  • 6 - Adirondack
  • 6 - Indy
  • 6 - Rapid City
  • 5 - Toledo
  • 5 - Greenville
  • 5 - Fort Wayne
  • 4 - Iowa
  • 4 - Jacksonville
  • 4 - Trois Riviéres
  • 4 - Tulsa
  • 4 - Maine
  • 3 - Allen
  • 3 - Florida
  • 3 - Tahoe
  • 3 - Orlando
  • 2 - Bloomington
  • 1 - Worcester
  • 1 - Idaho
  • 1- Norfolk
  • 0 - Atlanta
  • 0 - Wichita

- I posted this on my ECHL Stats post yesterday where I compared average goals scored and allowed by each division. It was no surprise that the Mountain Division was the top division in goals scored by the last division in goals allowed. The South Division was just the opposite. Here are the stats:

Average Goals Scored

  • 3.47 - Mountain
  • 3.21 - Central
  • 3.19 - North
  • 3.08 - South

Average Goals Allowed

  • 3.02 - South
  • 3.13 - Central
  • 3.25 - North
  • 3.52 - Mountain

The difference may not look like much, but the Mountain Division scored 200 more goals than the South Division. However, the Mountain Division gave up 250 more goals than the South Division. The bottom four ECHL teams in average goals allowed per game were in the Mountain Division.

DID YOU KNOW: Here is Allen's points and point percentage the last four regular seasons. The question is, will the downward trend continue in 2024-25 or can coach Adams reverse the trend?

  • 2023-24: 70 points. .486
  • 2022-23: 77 points, .535
  • 2021-22: 79 points, .549
  • 2020-21: 94 points, .653

  1. Barry, you're kidding right?
There will be a seismic drop in points and percentage.
As many have suggested, don't expect anything near .500
And based off of the general consensus, it will represent a failure on the part of ownership and will cast a significant spotlight on BJ during the offseason.
We know ownership cannot be trusted based on their communication with Costello 2 weeks before he was fired, so BJ better enjoy the season because its hard to justify any result that does not exceed the last 2 years.
The teams performance last season with injuries was quite frankly remarkable. Any suggestion to the contrary indicates people were not paying attention.

      - the coach sucks
      - ownership sucks
      - the team is going to suck
      - the city of Allen sucks
      - the concession stand food and prices suck
      - people who are positive and are being supportive of the team suck
      - I suck

Did I miss anything? It’s literally mind blowing that you all come on here and post if you hate so much.

It’s one thing to have a negative opinion about 1-2 things but you all just won’t stop complaining.

    5. Completely misquoting what everyone has been saying. Fans are upset with the ownership. They replaced a coach that made the playoffs both years while short handed with a coach who got fired from a lower league while not coming close to making the playoffs. It is true that thr expectations for this season are low because of other teams having proven talent. Our proven talent got ran off by ownership. The concession stand prices are too high. The City of Allen is fine. I've been a fan of this team since year one and sill want to be. I don't like what I've seen from this team this off season and I share that. It doesn't mean you suck. But I have the same right to give my opinion that you have. Good job supporting the team. Don't go after others just because they have a different opinion than you. When you do that you are doing the same thing your calling us out for. Your just doing it with you different angle. Remember that you are not the complaint police. Be a fan. Let others do the same

Read the last blog post. One of you Anonymous posters was complaining about the concession stands… and numerous times people have complained about the city of Allen. Are you new here?

It’s hard to have a conversation with people on a blog when 98% post anonymously and so when you read one post complaining about whatever the topic is of the day, it is easy to group you all together, and I do. Don’t like it. Post under a fake name. Not hard to do.

If you want to talk about “rights”. You have the right to do whatever you want, I have never said you don’t have that right. And I know this may shock you… please hold on to your pearls for this… I too have the right to post and to complain about you all. Stop acting like you’re a victim.

This is a blog for Allen American supporters right? Currently the majority of replies to the blog are whining and complaining about something.

It’s hilarious that you all get so offended in me pushing back on your negative posts.

    8. You're whining about people stating their opinions.
The food prices are a joke. Have you been to other ECHL venues?
The off season has been a joke, surely you agree?
Any rebuild over the past 2 years has been shot, surely you agree?
This season will not be better than the past 2, surely you agree?
Costello was lied to by ownership (documented on blog), surely you agree?
We all wish BJ the best, we are rooting for him, but surely you agree its an uphill battle based on his coaching record, lack of activity in the past year or so, and decimation of a roster?
We all support the team, right?
      We all have differing opinions.

You're not happy if someone posts their thoughts and its not sunshine and rainbows.

Let's support the team and allow the boards to function as an opinion base, positive and negative.

      Imagine that!
Our NHL affiliate has water 70% lower than a bottle at the event center.
      Popcorn $3 - not $8.

Also check out the ECHL website and look at the capsules posts from the league today. There are coaches with numerous years with the same teams that have a win loss record near 50/50, some who did not make the playoffs last year, who still have jobs. Seems obvious pressure on ownership from Ernst to fire Costello for no reason other than hatred of anyone associated with Martinson.

  17. Interesting listen of our owner on the NHL Wraparound podcast.

I’m sorry, but I’m not at all impressed with the self promotion. Obnoxiously Loud and seemingly unaware of operational execution despite claims to the contrary. In bed with Zawyer across multiple fronts.
One interesting takeaway was that she personally met with each player at exit interviews. One has to wonder on top of the Costello decision if that was a reason why players revolted, including guys that struggled last season to get playing time on a regular basis.

Criticize me, but I am underwhelmed and somewhat concerned about the clubs owner and decision maker.

    1. Just listened to this podcast. Wow! ... self promotion is an understatement. Appears to be clueless as to operations of an ECHL hockey club. The only positive I heard was her overall positiveness and acknowledgement of needing 2 years to get their arms around things.
Unfortunately, they elected to make bonehead decisions as soon as the season was over.

  19. This is gonna come across as very negative, but what we have here is failure to understand a very specific culture(hockey). This is not football, basketball, or baseball. The culture of hockey and hockey players is very unique and different, at least for now. Generally it’s a team culture. You don’t show up your teammates. You pull together and work as one. Very different than the football/basketball mentality of me me me and look at what I did. Ever notice when they interview a hockey player all good things are referenced as “we” and negative things are “ my responsibility”. It’s a different culture and if one decided to buy a team, some research on the culture would be a good use of time. Just sayin

    1. Yep! Colossal mess.
      Urgently paging Chad Costello.

And to those suggesting the Costello calls stop, surely, by now you're cognizant enough to believe and understand this is a failure on so many levels.

At this point, I'm not sure where decisions and control lies.
The team operated without Jack Gulati being involved for many years. They've stripped power from Mydra, rookie GM and coach making rookie errors. Both hands crossed and pointing in opposite directions. Blame assigned elsewhere.

Good luck Ty, our interactions with you were nothing but pure class. I hope you achieve success.

      Delete
    2. honest question here, why do you want Chad to come back? he would have the same team we have now, his win ratio was going down...

      2023-24: 70 points. .486
      2022-23: 77 points, .535
      2021-22: 79 points, .549
      2020-21: 94 points, .653

we needed a new coach, we need new ownership, we need a lot, but having chad come back to continue that downward trend isn't the answer.

      scorned coaches never return...

      Delete
    3. Obviously Costello isn't coming back as long as current ownership is involved.

However, if you truly understand the mechanics of last season, the severity of injuries, the roster rebuilding (3 times), all along with lack of anything other than Sinclair from Belleville (Fizer late in the season), then you'll understand the 0.486 was a hell of an effort.

The Americans would have missed the playoffs if decisions weren't made, like acquiring Hardie, MacArthur, Smedsrud, Fizer and if Costello didn't earn the trust of other AHL teams and players. Players like Walker were pushed aside for the betterment of the team.

Again, as many would agree, we had no right to be in the playoffs, but a desire for success from within, both from Costello and the players, got them there on that Saturday night game in Allen.

Costello deserved an encore to prove his worth. As a fan with no allegiance to him, that's my opinion.

      Delete
    4. Absolutely agree! He had soooo many players coming here too, it was going to get great!

    2. That is false. He was cut bc the coach wanted to bring in one of his old players from his past team, another dumb move.
Farmer absolutely deserved and earned his spot

      Diabolical mess.

    4. Yes I it is true, he asked to be traded this summer when everything went down.

      Delete
    5. That’s not true at all lol, yes he was open to other teams with the mass exit of players, who wouldn’t. Farmer absolutely wanted to play here and absolutely deserved a spot. .

      Delete
    6. Then BJ trading Farmer (58 Games, +10 in Regular Season) for Artyom (68 Games, -8 in Reg Season) makes little sense statistically.

From a goal perspective, they are 5/5, and from an assist standpoint 7/8 .... both at 12 points.

Dumb decision to jettison a proven player.

More fuel for the fire BJ camp before the season has even started. I believe he deserves a chance, but bonehead decisions keep being made. This isn't the OHL folks.
