Early Season Assessment by the Numbers, Mark Duarte (#3) and Jackson Parsons (#1) Earn Stars in Win, Yablonski Visits Practice and More

I want to take some time this morning to assess the Allen Americans' season thus far. There are so many factors to consider when deciding where Allen stands 10 games (13.8%) into the season. When the season started on October 18, there was a consensus among most Allen fans and those around the Mountain Division that with the return of Steve Martinson and the skilled, physical team he recruited, the Americans would be a contender in the division.

- It was also clear that it might take some time for the team to come together since Coach Martinson had not coached most of the players he recruited. It has been an up-and-down first month of the season. Allen beat Wichita on the road on opening night, but since that first win, Allen has lost three straight, won three straight, and lost three straight.

- The loss to Tulsa on Saturday (4-2) was particularly frustrating because the team had a week off between games, had a good week of practice, team meetings, and a chance to heal bumps and bruises. The expectations for that game were very high. With a win the Americans' record would improve to 5-3-2-0 (.600) as Allen hits the road for two weeks, when Disney on Ice takes over the CUTX Event Center. Instead, the Americans hit the road nursing a three-game losing streak.

- It wasn't just the loss on Saturday that was disheartening; it was how the team lost the game.

  • Allen outshot Tulsa in every period (33-24 for the game).
  • A fluky goal on Tulsa's first shot of the game spelled defeat, as Allen never recovered.
  • Three second-period goals, including another fluky goal, put the game out of reach as the Oilers took a 4-0 lead into the second intermission.
  • Allen turned it on in the third period, outshooting Tulsa 13-8 and outscoring them 2-0 to make the final score 4-2. It was encouraging to see how the team responded in the third period, but a disappointing result as the team approaches one of the roughest stretches of the schedule with nine of the next 12 games on the road.

- If you step back and look at the season thus far, this is what the stats say:

- With all of the ups and downs, Allen is still a .500 hockey team in the thick of the Mountain Division standings race, because the division is the closest in the league. You can make the argument that Allen could return from the upcoming six-game road trip to Idaho and Utah in first place or last place in the division. Here are the current standings by point percentage, which is a better measurement than points because games played vary from 10 (Allen) to 14 (Tahoe & Idaho):

  • .636 - Tulsa
  • .615 - Kansas City
  • .607 - Tahoe
  • .536 - Idaho
  • .500 - Allen
  • .462 - Utah
  • .462 - Rapid City
  • .423 - Wichita

- There is no denying that Allen is getting less help from its affiliate than any team in the division, and it isn't even close. It is important to remember, by the time Steve Martinson was hired as coach and general manager, his choice was to affiliate with Ottawa or be the only team in the ECHL without an affiliation, and thus be independent. Martinson's relationship with Ottawa/Belleville is great, and the Senators want to help. The main issue is that budget constraints limit the number of players the Senators have under contract, so injuries prevent them from sending players to Allen. As of last Tuesday, here are the numbers of NHL/AHL contracted players assigned to each Mountain Division team.

  • 10 - Rapid City
  • 8 - Utah
  • 6 - Tulsa
  • 6 - Kansas City
  • 6 - Tahoe
  • 6 - Wichita
  • 0 Allen - Net zero (Katic assigned, Duarte loaned)

- Scoring has been an issue with the Americans so far, given the skill on the team. Allen has scored 28 goals in its first 10 games, but if you look behind the numbers, the Americans scored six goals twice. In their other eight games, Allen has scored a total of 16 goals (2.00 per game). Here is a breakdown of the number of goals scored in the first 10 games.

  • 6 goals - two times
  • 3 goals - three times
  • 2 goals - one time
  • 1 goal - four times

Allen's record when scoring 3+ goals is 4-0-1-0, and when scoring two or fewer goals, it is 0-4-1-0.

- Here are the Allen players who have three or more points after 10 games.

  • 11 points (5G, 6A) - Brayden Watts
  • 8 points (1G, 7A) - Andre Anania
  • 7 points (3G, 4A) - Danny Katic (5 games played)
  • 5 points (3G, 2A) - Mark Duarte (loaned to Belleville)
  • 5 points (3G, 2A) - Harrison Blaisdell
  • 4 points (3G, 1A) - Michael Gildon
  • 4 points (2G, 2A) - Thomas Caron
  • 4 points (1G, 3A) - Brad Morrison (8 games played)
  • 4 points (1G, 3A) - Spencer Asuchak (9 games played)
  • 4 points (1G, 3A) - Hank Crone
  • 3 points (2G, 1A) - Matt Register (4 games played)
  • 3 points (1G, 2A) - Colton Hargrove
  • 3 points (0G, 3A) - Kevin Spinozzi (9 games played)
  • 3 points (0G, 3A) - Sam Sedley

There are a lot of proven goal scorers on the list above. If Allen has success on the upcoming road trip, there must be more scoring from these proven goal scorers.

- Allen has been a .500 club over the first 10 games, which is an okay start. However, the Americans have played seven of their 10 games at home. Between now and Christmas, the Americans will play 12 of 17 games on the road. This section of the schedule will go a long way in determining if Allen is a contender or one of several teams fighting for the final playoff spot.

OTHER COMMENTS

- When Mark Duarte was loaned to Belleville last week. My first thought other than being excited about the promotion, was would he get signed to an AHL deal by the Senators and not return to Allen. After all that is the goal. Mark is the perfect type of player to be loaned as a third/fourth line player. He works hard, is great on the forecheck, and is an outstanding penalty killer who can contribute offensively. Mark has played in all three games since reporting to Belleville, which were all road games, at Rochester, Utica, and Syracuse. Belleville won all three games.

Mark scored his first two AHL goals in Belleville's 4-1 win over Syracuse on Saturday. He scored the first goal of the game, unassisted, with a backhanded shot Allen fans are familiar with. He then scored the final goal of the game into an empty net. It says a lot about Mark's defensive ability that he was on the ice at the end of the game when Syracuse pulled its goalie for an extra attacker. For his effort, Mark was selected as the #3 star of the game.

Here are the video highlights, which show both of Mark's goals plus one of his blocked shots (he has been killing penalties). The highlights also include many of Jackson Parsons' saves as he stopped 34 of 35 shots for a .971 save percentage to earn the #1 start of the game:

Here is a post-game interview with Mark:

- As I mentioned in the blog post on Saturday, enforcer Jeremy Yablonski visited practice on Friday to work with a couple of players before and after practice. Here are two videos from my Allen Americans YouTube channel. The first one is Jeremy working with Braidan Simmons-Fischer after practice, and the second is Steve Martinson talking about why he asked Yoblonski to help out. FYI, Yablonski has visited Allen's practices several times in the past.

- After practice, I had a chance to sit down with Yablonski and Martinson as they talked about fighting back in the day and today, but I was intrigued as they talked about how Jeremy works with players on fighting techniques. He talks with players about the mental approach to fighting as much as the physical aspects. After a lot of fighting talk the conversation shifted to the importance of self-responsibility in leadership. Before you can lead anyone else, you must take ownership of your own actions, choices, and growth. Personal accountability is the foundation of influence in coaching and in the locker room.

If you watched the Simmons-Fischer fight on Saturday, you could see that he applied the lessons learned from Jeremy, especially how to switch hands, adjust positioning, and have patience. Here are the video highlights from the game, including the fight: https://echl.com/videos/tulsa-oilers-vs-allen-americans-nov-15-2025

- The Americans will leave tomorrow morning for Boise, where they will start their road trip with games against Idaho on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. The team will practice tomorrow after they arrive in Boise. Because of the long road trip, all healthy players will accompany the team. I would assume the only player staying home will be Malik Johnson who is on injured reserve. It remains to be seen if Jackson Parsons will return to Allen for the road trip. The expectation is he will, but if he doesn't, Martinson will sign a goalie rather than play with an EBUG in Idaho.

- Here is the first of what I hope will be many player videos this season that will be posted to the Allen Americans YouTube Channel (please subscribe). I did this one last week as a way to get to know the players in their own words. Thanks to Michael Gildon for being the first:

DID YOU KNOW: The ECHL Stats post today is about the leading scorers among ECHL defensemen. Andre Anania is on the list. Andre is Allen's second leading scorer behind Brayden Watts:

Top scoring ECHL defensemen by average points per game (minimum 10 games played):

1.08 - Marcus Crawford, Kansas City
1.00 - Chad Nychuk, Atlanta
.92 - Noah Beck, Wichita
.91 - Jake Johnson, Cincinnati
.82 - Brent Johnson, Wheeling
.80 - Andre Anania, Allen
.80 - Riley McCourt, Toledo

Allen vs Tulsa Preview, Riley Gill Enters the HOF, ECHL Extra Time Stats, YouTube Channel and More

After a week off between games and plenty of practice time, the Allen Americans should be ready to go tonight when the Tulsa Oilers invade the CUTX Event Center. It will be Allen's third straight game against the Oilers, having lost twice in Tulsa last weekend (4-1 and 4-3 in overtime).

- Tulsa arrives in Allen with a record of 6-4-0-0 (.600) and is on a five-game win streak. Allen's record is 4-3-2-0 (.556), and the Americans have lost two straight. Here is a statistical comparison between the two teams.

  • Goals scored average: Allen (2.9) - Tulsa (2.9)
  • Goals allowed average: Allen (3.2) - Tulsa (3.0)
  • Shots for average: Allen (31.2) - Tulsa (28.2)
  • Shots against average: Allen (37.4) - Tulsa (37.5)
  • Power play percentage: Allen (12.5%) - Tulsa (8.3%)
  • Penalty kill percentage: Allen (90.2%) - Tulsa (82.9%)

- When you look at the stats above, special teams stand out. Tulsa has the worst power-play percentage in the league (8.3%), while Allen's penalty kill percentage (90.2%) is ranked #4. It didn't prove to be an advantage in the two games in Tulsa last weekend. Tulsa was 1-6 on the power play while Allen was 0-10. The Americans worked a lot on the power play in practice this week, so hopefully that will bear fruit tonight.

- Tulsa, ranks #30, and Allen, ranks #29, allow more shots than any other teams in the league. Despite losing twice last week in Tulsa, the Americans outshot the Oilers 69-61. If Allen can outshoot Tulsa tonight and win the special teams battle, the Americans will have a great shot at a victory.

- Allen has averaged 2.89 goals per game over its first nine games, but if you look behind this stat the Americans have scored 12 goals in two games and a total of 14 goals in the other seven games. Here is a breakdown of the number of goals scored in the first nine games and the record:

  • 6 goals: 2-0-0-0
  • 3 goals: 2-0-1-0
  • 2 goals: 0-1-0-0
  • 1 goal: 0-2-1-0

Allen's record when scoring 3+ goals is 4-0-1-0, and when scoring two or fewer goals, it is 0-3-1-0. The old adage of the first team to three goals wins is pretty solid.

- Based on what I observed at practice this week, the lines for the game tonight will be as follows. Lineups can always change, but here are the likely lines to start the game:

  • McAuley-Gildon-Caron
  • Crone-Asuchak-Watts
  • Morrison-Hargrove-Katic
The one number changed because the Star Wars specialty jersey the team is wearing tonight is Colby McAuley, who will wear #88.

- Allen will be without Mark Duarte, who was loaned to Belleville earlier this week. Mark has played in both Belleville games since being loaned, which were road wins over Rochester and Utica. Mark hasn't found the score sheet yet, but I have heard he's taking shifts and killing penalties. Belleville did not allow a power-play goal (0-6) in the two wins. Belleville plays again tonight in Syracuse.

- The game tonight will be a one-referee game, with Tyler Hascall (#8) scheduled. The linesmen will be Michael Miggins (#47) and Aaron Schacht (#51).

 RILEY GILL

- I know everyone was excited to hear that Riley Gill will be going into the ECHL Hall of Fame when Allen hosts the All-Star Classic on January 19. The HOF induction luncheon will be at the Marriott Courtyard (next to CUTX Event Center) at noon. If you are interested in attending the banquet/luncheon, you can get tickets at https://www.gofevo.com/event/HOF26 (price is $75).

Riley is the sixth goaltender to enter the ECHL Hall of Fame. The average wait time for selection has been about 10 years, with a range of 4-17 years.

I won't restate all of Riley's stats, but here are a handful of them from when I was making the case that it was time to put Gill in the Hall of Fame back in 2022. All of these records have since been tied or broken, but when Riley retired, he stood alone:

Riley owns almost every Allen goalie record, both regular season and playoffs, and several ECHL all-time playoff records. Unfortunately, his career was cut short when he was injured in his second game of the 2017-18 season on October 21, 2017. That would end up being the last game of his illustrious pro career.

This is from the blog in 2022 -  In my view, Riley is a lock to become an ECHL Hall of Famer, and it is time to put him in. Here are the ECHL career goalie records that Riley ranks #1 all-time:

90 - most playoff game appearances: Allen (51), Reading (20), Kalamazoo (19).

5094 - most playoff minutes played: Allen (2771), Reading (1274), Kalamazoo (1049)

53 - most playoff wins: Allen (30), Reading (14), Kalamazoo (9)

11 - most wins in Kelly Cup finals: Allen (7), Reading (4)

Riley played in three Kelly Cup finals and won three Kelly Cups!

- In addition to being a great hockey player, Riley is the type of guy who excels at everything he tries. He was one of the best golfers in the state of Minnesota when he was in high school. I saw a story years ago about Riley making a visit to a Division III college in Minneapolis in hopes of playing college hockey and golf. It turned out the golf coach wanted him, but the hockey coach didn't have room. Gill decided to play junior hockey in Texarkana, TX (his coach was Tampa Bay Lightning Coach Jon Cooper). Based on his play in Texarkana, Riley earned a scholarship to Western Michigan University.

Riley was also the best fisherman on the Americans, something I witnessed many times firsthand. I met Riley in 2014 when he first arrived in Allen along with Aaron Gens, another great fisherman. It didn't take long for the three of us, all avid fishermen from Minnesota, to strike up a friendship. We spent many afternoons fishing for crappies in the 13-acre pond, 150 yards out my back door at Heritage Ranch.

This is from a blog post in 2021: Yesterday, Riley was in a huge bass fishing tournament on Lake Fork. There were 1700 fishermen in the tournament, with prize money of $20,000 being paid out for the 10 biggest fish being weighed in every hour. That's right, $20,000 per hour for seven hours. Riley won first place for the 1:00 pm weigh-in with a 9.37-pound bass. For his big catch (on a super fluke for you bass fishermen), Riley earned $15,000. Now that is a good day fishing!

Riley Gill's 9.37 pound bass wins 1st place in Mega Bass Tournament

- After hockey, Riley and his wife Angie settled in the DFW area. They live in Melissa with their three sons. The Gills own a very successful construction company, Riley Gill's Construction. His dad was a home developer, so he grew up around the business and worked construction during the summers.

Riley is also able to do some coaching with Allen High School.

OTHER COMMENTS

- It has been a long time since every ECHL team was in action on a Saturday night, but all 30 teams play tonight. One thing to watch is whether the three .800+ teams (Wheeling, Atlanta, Fort Wayne) can keep up the torrid pace. Here is the ECHL Today with all of the previews: https://echl.com/news/2025/11/echl-today-nov-15

- Just a reminder, I have reactivated the Allen Americans Blog YouTube channel. If you are on YouTube, do me a favor and subscribe to the channel. There are a couple of new videos I posted about enforcer Jeremy Yablonski, who visited practice yesterday to work with a couple of players. I will talk tomorrow about spending time with Yablonski and Martinson, talking about fighting and leadership. It was a fascinating experience. I will also post the videos here tomorrow.

DID YOU KNOW: The ECHL Stats post today is about extra time games. For the Americans, 22.2% (2 of 9) of their games have gone past regulation, both decided in overtime.

28.4% of all NHL games this season have gone past regulation, higher than the all-time NHL record of 25% set in 2013-14. How does the NHL's 28.4% compare to the ECHL and AHL percentages this season?

ECHL
- 21.7% (34 of 157) of all ECHL games this season have gone past regulation.
- 23 of the 34 (68%) were decided in overtime.
- 11 of the 34 (32%) were decided in a shootout.

AHL
- 24.3% (50 of 206) of all AHL games this season have gone past regulation.
- 38 of the 50 (76%) were decided in overtime.
- 12 of the 50 (24%) were decided in a shootout.

Allen Practice Update, Duarte Loaned to Belleville, Mountain Division NHL/AHL Contracted Players, ECHL Loaned Players, YouTube Channel and More

We are back from visiting family (3-year-old granddaughter) in the Washington, DC area. I have a few things to cover this morning, plus a favor to ask:

- The Americans don't play again until Saturday, when Tulsa is in town after beating Allen twice last week, 4-1 and 4-3 in overtime. The team had a late practice yesterday after Coach Martinson had a team meeting. I attended practice, and from what I observed, it was a good practice. Here is what I picked up:

  • As is always the case, some players are dealing with medical issues, but it is expected that everyone, except Malik Johnson, will be available for the game on Saturday and the long road trip to Idaho and Utah next week.
  • Mark Duarte has been loaned to Belleville and is expected to be in the lineup. The Senators play in Rochester tonight, Utica on Friday, and Syracuse on Saturday.
  • It is a great opportunity for Mark after he had an excellent training camp with Belleville. How long will Duarte be in Belleville? I am reminded of a story Martinson told me years ago about getting a request to loan this player just for the weekend, and he was gone for the rest of the season. All that ECHL contracted players, who are loaned, ask for is an opportunity, and that sometimes leads to an AHL contract. It would be great to see Duarte have success with Belleville, get signed to an AHL deal, and not return to Allen until the playoffs.

- With Duarte on loan, I decided to look at the Mountain Division and compare rosters to see how many NHL/AHL players are assigned and how many ECHL contracted players are loaned. Here is what I found. FYI, net help is NHL/AHL contracted players assigned minus ECHL contracted players loaned:

  • Allen
  • 1 player assigned
  • 1 player loaned
  • 0 net help
  • Idaho
  • 6 players assigned
  • 0 players loaned
  • +6 net help
  • Kansas City
  • 6 players assigned
  • 0 players loaned
  • +6 net help
  • Rapid City
  • 10 players assigned
  • 0 players loaned
  • +10 net help
  • Tahoe
  • 6 players assigned
  • 0 players loaned
  • +6 net help
  • Tulsa
  • 6 players assigned
  • 0 players loaned
  • +6 net help
  • Utah
  • 8 players assigned
  • 0 players loaned
  • +8 net help
  • Wichita
  • 6 players assigned
  • 0 players loaned
  • +6 net help

- Here is a recap of the stats above showing the net help for each team, which shows how little help the Americans are getting from Ottawa/Belleville.  Note: Allen is the only Mountain Division team that currently has an ECHL-contracted player loaned to the AHL. FYI, this info is from ECHL transactions and can change daily. All ECHL contracted players currently on loan to the NHL/AHL (11 of them) are listed in the "DID YOU KNOW" section below:

  • +10 Rapid City
  • +8 Utah
  • +6 Tulsa
  • +6 Kansas City
  • +6 Tahoe
  • +6 Wichita
  • 0 Allen

- Based on what I saw at practice yesterday, you can look for more line changes and power play unit changes for the game on Saturday. Loaning Mark Duarte is a big part of the changes, but Martinson is also looking to get speed on every line.

- Based on my conversations with Coach Martinson, I wouldn't look for any roster changes unless:

  • Jackson Parsons is not assigned to Allen before the team leaves on the road trip next week.
  • Injuries add to the 14-day IR
  • A new CBA is approved.

OTHER COMMENTS

- Allen has played fewer games (9) than any other team in the Mountain Division, and the gap will widen with the Americans playing just one game until November 18. By my calculation, the games played by each Mountain Division team when Allen opens its series with Idaho on the 18th will be as follows. Allen will have a lot of games in hand:

  • 14 games - Idaho
  • 14 games - Tahoe
  • 13 games - Kansas City
  • 13 games - Utah
  • 13 games - Wichita
  • 13 games - Rapid City
  • 11 games - Tulsa
  • 10 games - Allen

- Years ago, I created a YouTube channel, which I primarily used to post interviews with Steve Martinson. I have decided to experiment with doing more videos with players and post them on my YouTube channel. FYI, this is not an attempt to make money (I will make none), but an effort to avoid transcribing audio into the blog. I can post this video content more often and more quickly. I ask this favor: if you use YouTube, please subscribe to the Allen Americans Blog channel. I will attempt to do the first video after practice today and upload it to my Allen Americans Blog YouTube channel this afternoon. Thanks

- There are four games on the ECHL schedule tonight, with three Mountain Division teams in action. Here is the ECHL Today with the previews: https://echl.com/news/2025/11/echl-today-nov-12

DID YOU KNOW: In addition to having NHL/AHL contracted players assigned, ECHL teams also loan their contracted players to the NHL/AHL. Per ECHL transactions, 11 players are currently loaned to AHL teams. If they do well, these players could earn an AHL contract. This list is as of this morning, but can change daily:

Allen: (F) Mark Duarte
Greensboro: (D) Braden Doyle
Greenville: (D) Jake Murray
Kalamazoo: (D) Robbie Drazner, (G) Luke Pavacich
Reading: (D) Vincent Sevigny
Savannah (D) Bryan Yoon, (D) Phip Waugh
Toledo: (D) Colin Swoyer, (F) Nolan Moyle
Wheeling: (G) Jaxon Castor

In addition to loaning players to NHL/AHL teams, Bloomington loaned Daniel Tedesco (F) to the Italian National Team on November 3.

Sunday Afternoon Hockey Preview, Keys to Victory, Parsons #1 Star, Division Standings, Stat from the Past and More

The Allen Americans play Tulsa this afternoon at 3:05 (CST) in Tulsa and don't play again until next Saturday when they play Tulsa at home. If you look at the season in sections, the game against Tulsa on the 15th will end the first section of the season. Allen's record with two games left in this opening section is 4-3-1-0 (.563). If you had to describe this first section of the season the word that comes to mind is favorable. A total of 10 games with seven at home. Just three road games to the closest opponents, Wichita and Tulsa.

For the Americans to call this first section of the season a success, Allen needs wins today and next Saturday against Tulsa. That would give them a record of 6-3-1-0 (.650) over the first ten games of the season. The next section of the schedule will be much tougher for the Americans. Here is a breakdown of what I call section two of the schedule:

  • 12 games in 24 days from November 19 to December 13.
  • Nine of the 12 games are on the road.
  • A long six game road trip to Idaho (November 19, 21, 22) and Utah (November 26, 28, 29).,
  • The three home games are against Utah (December 3, 5, 6)
  • The Americans finish this 12-game section with a three-game trip to Rapid City (December 11, 12, 13).

- Allen has averaged 2.88 goals per game over its first eight game, but if you look behind this stat the Americans have scored 12 goals in two games and 11 goals in the other six. Here is a breakdown of the number of goals scored in the first eight games and the record:

  • 6 goals: 2-0-0-0
  • 3 goals: 2-0-0-0
  • 2 goals: 0-1-0-0
  • 1goal: 0-2-1-0

You can see from these stats that Allen hasn't reached three goals in half of its games thus far and lost them all. When the Americans have scored three or more goals, they are undefeated.

- The line everyone is waiting to breakout is the McAuley-Hargrove-Crone line. As a group their career average points per game is 3.44. In 2022-23 their combined average points per game was 3.74. They were held scoreless on Friday, and as a group have averaged just .75 points per game this season. I assume they will be together again this afternoon, but as you have seen in the past, Martinson is not hesitant to switch up the lines if the team is not scoring. The top line of Caron-Gildon-Duarte is the line least likely to see change the way they have been playing.

- Coach Martinson has been consistent in talking about the key to success is how the team operates in the neutral zone. Coming through the neutral zone with speed, dumping the puck when there isn't a play to be made, and avoiding neutral zone turnovers are key. Martinson has mentioned to me several times recently the importance of skating and pace in today's ECHL. Players that aren't skating with pace all of the time find it hard to be successful.

-  A good start will be another key today. I sound like a broken record, but the stats do tell the story:

  • Allen is 2-0-0-0 when scoring first, but they have allowed the first goal in six of eight games.
  • The overall league record when teams trail after the second period is 13-85-7-3  (.167).
  • Allen has been outscored 11-6 in the first period.

- A final key this afternoon is for Allen to win the special teams battle, where they have a distinct advantage. Tulsa has scored just one power play goal all season. They Oilers have a 5.0% power play percentage, and 80.0% penalty kill percentage. Allen is 14.7% on the power play and 91.9% on the penalty kill.

OTHER COMMENTS

- Allen was idle last night but got some help in the Mountain Division standings as the top two teams lost. Rapid City beat first place Tahoe 5-2 and Idaho beat second place Kansas City 2-1. The Americans have played the fewest games in the division (8), while Tahoe and Idaho have played the most (11). Allen vs Tulsa is the only Mountain Division game today so a chance for both teams to gain ground on the leaders.

- The Mountain Division standings have gotten even tighter, with the difference between the top team and the bottom team even closer after last night. Here is a comparison of point percentages between the top and bottom teams of each division that shows how the Mountain Division has the lowest point percentage of the first-place teams and the highest point percentage of the last place teams:

1st Place Teams
  • .889 - South Division (Atlanta)
  • .875 - North Division (Wheeling)
  • .778 - Central Division (Fort Wayne)
  • .626 - Mountain Division (Tahoe)

Last Place Teams
  • .450 - Mountain Division (Rapid City & Wichita)
  • .286 - Central Division (Kalamazoo)
  • .188 - North Division (Worcester)
  • .125 - South Division (Orlando)
.

- Jackson Parsons made his first start for Belleville last night and it was quite a night for the rookie. He gave up one goal and won the game 2-1 over Hartford. Parsons won't turn 21 until the 23rd of this month. After his first AHL game his stat line is a 1.00 GAA and a save percentage of .968. For his effort Parsons was named the #1 star of the game.

- I heard an interview with Belleville Coach David Campbell on Friday, and he wasn't specific on when injured goalie Mads Sogaard will return to the lineup. Luckily, after Allen's game today, the Americans don't play again until next Saturday and that is a home game. Since Martinson has not signed a goalie, he must expect Parsons to return sometime next week.,

- There are only six games on the ECHL schedule today. Here are the previews on all of them: https://echl.com/news/2025/11/echl-today-nov-9

- Here are Allen's stats leaders:

  • Points (7) - Watts
  • Goals (3) - Blaisdell, Duarte, Gildon
  • Assists (6) - Watts
  • Plus/Minus (+1) - Anania, Caron, Gildon, Hargrove
  • PIM (15) - Caron
  • Shots (32) - Duarte
  • Shooting % (25%) - Blaisdell
  • GAA (2.37) - Parsons
  • Save % (.931) - Parsons

DID YOU KNOW: I thought for a change I would look back 10 years ago today and see what the "DID YOU KNOW" was all about. Some great Allen players were mentioned:

Both Brain McMillin (198) and Tyler Ludwig (195) are closing in on 200 games played for the Allen Americans. The all-time games played leaders are Jarret Lukin (238) and Mike Berube (229).

FYI, the four players mentioned above are still in the exclusive club of 11 players with 200 career games played for the Allen Americans:

  • 576 - Spencer Asuchak
  • 282 - Chad Costello
  • 247 - Tyler Ludwig
  • 238 - Jarret Lukin
  • 232 - Kris Myllari
  • 229 - Mike Berube
  • 228 - Gary Steffes
  • 222 - David Makowski
  • 215 - Brian McMillin
  • 213 - Eric Roy

Offense Absent in 4-1 Loss in Tulsa, Game Recap, Video Highlights, Standings in Depth and More

A slow start cost the Allen Americans again as they lost 4-1 to the Tulsa Oilers last night before a crowd of 5240 at the BOK center. What the stats say:

  • Allen is 2-0-0-0 when scoring first, but they have allowed the first goal in six of eight games including last night.
  • Allen trailed 2-1after the first period and second period which usually spells defeat. Allen is the only team in the league with two wins when trailing after the second period. The overall league record is 12-78-6-2.
  • After Tulsa took a 2-0 lead last night the Americans managed to cut the score to 2-1 on a late first period goal (18:42) by Thomas Caron, assisted by Michael Gildon and Quinn Warmuth. It turned out to be their only goal of the game.
  • The Americans have scored the same number of goals in the third period this season (11) than the first two periods combined. Despite having a 15-10 shot advantage in the third period last night, Allen could not light the lamp.
  • Allen outshot Tulsa 34-30 but could manage just one goal. That is a shooting percentage of 2.9% which won't win many games.
  • In its last two games prior to last night Allen scored 12 goals, however, in their other six games the Americans scored a total of 11 goals.
  • There were only six power plays in the game and Allen had four of them. The Americans power play was 0-4 and the power play has dropped to 14.7%, ranked #22,
  • Allen's penalty kill was perfect again (0-2) and improved the penalty kill percentage to 91.9%, ranked #4. The penalty kill unit has allowed only three goals on 37 chances.
  • The bottom line is Allen needs more offense from some of its proven scorers. The ECHL has 75 players averaging a point per game. Allen has none.

- Here are the game recaps from both teams and the video highlights:

- The teams will have the day off today before playing the second game of the two-game series on Sunday afternoon at 3:05. After the game last night, the BOK arena crew had to convert from hockey to concert setup.  Grammy award winning Christian singer Brandon Lake will be performing tonight and according to the BOK website less than 3% of tickets remain and the BOK is a big arena (over 17,000 for hockey). After the concert tonight it will be a quick turnaround for the crew converting back to hockey for the early start tomorrow.

OTHER COMMENTS

- Early in the season the standings can change very quickly. The Mountain remans the closest division in the ECHL. There is one stat that isn't always noticed that is a good proxy for strength of team and that is goal differential. By that metric two teams stand out. Here is the goal differential (goals for minus goals against) for the Mountain Division:

  • +12 Tahoe
  • +8 Kansas City
  • 0 Utah
  • -2 Allen
  • -2 Tulsa
  • -4 Rapid City
  • -6 Wichita
  • -10 Idaho

- Here are the division standings by points, which can be misleading because games played varies from 8-10:

  • 14 points - Tahoe
  • 12 points - Kansas City
  • 10 points - Tulsa
  • 9 points - Allen
  • 9 points - Idaho
  • 9 points - Utah
  • 9 points - Wichita
  • 7 points - Rapid City

- Finally, the fairest way to look at standings when games played varies is by point percentage:

  • .700 - Tahoe
  • ,667 - Kansas City
  • .563 - Allen
  • .556 - Tulsa
  • .450 - Utah
  • .450 - Idaho
  • .450 - Wichita
  • .389 - Rapid City

- It is clear no matter how you look at the standings the top two teams have been Tahoe and Kansas City, and you have to expect that to continue. The rest of the division is scrambling for positions. Remember, history shows 80% of all playoff teams will be decided by Thanksgiving, just 19 days away.

- Having a .800 point percentage is unheard of over the course of a season, It has happened only twice in the history of the ECHL. Louisiana in 2001-02 (.808) and by Idaho in 2022-23 when the Steelheads set the all-time record of .826. It is still very early in the season, but two teams are above .800.

  • .875 - Atlanta (7-1-0-0)
  • .857 - Wheeling (6-1-0-0)

DID YOU KNOW: Last season Allen didn't win its third home game until January 8th, the 16th home game of the season. This season, the Steve Martinson led Americans won their third home game on November 5th, the sixth home game of the season.

Allen vs Tulsa Preview, McAuley Returns and More

It is gameday for the Allen Americans as they start a rare two game, split day series with Tulsa. The team will have a day off on Saturday and play again on Sunday at 3:05 pm. Allen enters the game tonight on a three-game win streak. The Americans scored a total of 10 goals in their first five games of the season. They scored 12 goals in the last two games.

The game tonight is the first of 15 games against Tulsa this season (7 home, 8 away), the most games Allen plays against any other team.

- Allen arrives in Tulsa with a record of 4-2-1-0 and is on a four-game point streak (3-0-1-0). Tulsa's record is 4-4-0-0, and the Oilers have won three straight. Here is a statistical comparison between the two teams.
  • Goals scored average: Allen (3.14) - Tulsa (2.63)
  • Goals allowed average: Allen (3.00) - Tulsa (3.25)
  • Shots for average: Allen (30.29) - Tulsa (27.63)
  • Shots against average: Allen (39.43) - Tulsa (38.25)
  • Power play percentage: Allen (16.7%) - Tulsa (5.6%)
  • Penalty kill percentage: Allen (91.4%) - Tulsa (77.4%)

- When you look at the stats above a few things standout:
  • Allen is better statistically in every category except shots against. Allen is ranked #30 in the ECHL in shots allowed, Tulsa is ranked #29. Have to expect a lot of shots in this series.
  • Allen has a huge statistical advantage on special teams. Tulsa has the worst power play percentage in the league (5.6%), Allen's penalty kill percentage (91.4%) is ranked #4.
  • Allen's power play (16.7%) is ranked #14, Tulsa's penalty kill (77.4%) is ranked #22.

-  As usual getting off to a good start will be a key to the game. Allen is 2-0 when scoring first, Tulsa is 4-1. Allen hasn't lost with a first or second period lead, however the Americans have only had one first period lead and two second period leads. Tulsa is 4-1 with first period lead and 4-1 with a second period lead.

-  After a slow start Allen now has 13 players that have scored goals. Three players (Blaisdell, Duarte, Gildon) lead the team with three goals. Brayden Watts leads the team in assists (6) followed by defenseman Andre Anania (5).

- What do the Americans have to do to be successful in Tulsa? According to Coach Martinson it is getting all three lines playing to its potential and not forcing offensive plays, by being patient.

- Colby McAuley will be in the lineup tonight and I expect he will be reunited with his linemates from 2022-23, Crone and Hargrove. You might see a lineup with three lines and seven defensemen.

- The referee scheduled for the game, Ibrahim Arifi (#46) is the same referee that worked the Allen game on Wednesday. He called 14 penalties in that game including 12 minor penalties, which led to power plays. You could see a lot of power plays tonight.

-  There are 12 games on the ECHL schedule tonight. Only one of the games is outside the division. The one exception is Fort Wayne at Florida. Here is the ECHL Today with the previews:   https://echl.com/news/2025/11/echl-today-nov-7

- Tulsa is a much different team than the one Allen faced in preseason. Most notably the Oilers have eight NHL/AHL contracted players and five of the eight are under contract with Tulsa's NHL affiliate Anaheim. Both of their goalies are NHL contracted.

DID YOU KNOW: Here is the odd stat of the day. Two of the best teams in the ECHL thus far have not played a home game. Fort Wayne is ranked #1 (6-1-0-0, .857) and still has four more road games before they open at home on November 21. Reading is ranked #4 (5-1-1-0, .786) and plays its first home game tomorrow (Saturday) night.

School Day Brings 6-4 Win, Game Recap, Video Highlights, Division Standings, Martinson earns 400th Win in Allen and More

It is always a good sign when a team doesn't play its best, but still finds a way to win. The Allen Americans did just that this morning, beating the Wichita Thunder 6-4 before a crowd of 6250, of which 5000 were school kids who kept the energy up the entire game. The roaring started during player introductions and hit a crescendo when Hank Crone was introduced. My first thought was why do all these kids know about Hank Crone, then I was reminded that it was his number, 67, they were cheering for.

It was a perfect School Day game. A lot of goals, a fight (Thomas Caron), and an Allen victory.

- Allen was outshot by a large margin in all three periods. Here is the bad news and good news from the game.

  • Wichita had the first eight shots of the game.
  • Allen scored on its first shot of the game.
  • Wichita outshot Allen 17-5 in the first period.
  • Allen scored two goals on five shots.
  • Score was tied 2-2 after the first period.
  • Wichita outshot Allen 15-9 in the second period.
  • Allen outscored Wichita 2-1 in the second period.
  • After two periods, Allen was outshot 32-14, but led 4-3.
  • Allen was outshot 17-7 in the third period.
  • Allen outscored Wichita 2-1 in the third period.
  • Allen took nine penalties, eight were power-play opportunities.
  • Allen killed them all (0-8)

- You get the gist: Allen did not play well this morning, but still found a way to win. Here is how they did it:

  • Allen scored six goals on just 21 shots. That is an off-the-charts shooting percentage of 29%.
  • Allen won the special teams battle, going 1-4 (25%) on the power play and 0-8 (100%) on the penalty kill.
  • Marco Costantini made 45 saves.

- Goal scorers for Allen were Michael Gildon (3), Mark Duarte (1,2,3), and Danny Katic (1,2). Andre Anania assisted on four of the six goals. Here are the video highlights. Keep an eye on #86, Andre Anania, who played a big part in four of the goals: https://echl.com/videos/wichita-thunder-vs-allen-americans-nov-5-2025

- I stopped by Coach Martinson's office after the game to congratulate him on his 400th win as the coach in Allen. Milestones aren't a big deal to Martinson, and he was much more interested in talking about the poor execution in the game, especially the poor start. While he had praise for some players like Duarte, Katic, Anania, and Costantini, he was not happy with the neutral zone turnovers and failure to pressure the puck in the offensive zone. He was already busy deciding the drills he is going to use in practice tomorrow (Thursday) to address the issues.

- Here are the game recaps from both teams with the goal-by-goal details:

OTHER COMMENTS

- With Allen's win this morning, the Americans have moved into first place in the Mountain Division by point percentage. Tahoe could overtake the Americans if it wins in Rapid City tonight. Here are the standings:

  • .643 - Allen
  • .625 - Tahoe
  • .625 - Kansas City
  • .500 - Tulsa
  • .444 - Idaho
  • .438 - Utah

  • .428 - Rapid City

The Mountain Division remains the tightest of the four ECHL divisions. It has the lowest point percentage (.643 of any #1 team and the highest point percentage (.429) of any last-place team.

- Allen must now get ready for two games in Tulsa on Friday and Sunday. Tulsa has eight NHL/AHL contracted players assigned, and five of them (including both goalies) are NHL contracted players.

- Atlanta lost to Greenville at home this morning, 3-1, to snap its six-game win streak from the start of the season. Five teams lead the league with point percentages of .750+

  • .857 - Atlanta
  • .833 - Fort Wayne
  • .800 - Wheeling
  • .786 - Reading
  • .750 - Toledo

- Nancy and I are headed to Washington D.C. tomorrow for a long weekend to visit our one and only grandchild, who turns three later this month. I am taking my antique laptop along and will try to put out a short blog in the mornings, but no promises.

DID YOU KNOW: Steve Martinson won his 400th game in Allen this morning. Here are his regular-season wins from all of the teams he has coached:
