Allen Losing Streak Hits Three, Game Recap, Video Highlights, Stats, Longest Point Streaks and More

The Allen Americans lost to the Florida Everblades 8-5 last night before a small crowd of 1441 at the CUTX Event Center. The final score was much closer than the game Allen fans witnessed last night. The first two periods were the worst Allen has played all season. Uninspiring hockey with no passion or life up and down the lineup. To the Americans credit they won the third period, outshooting Florida 13-6 and outscoring them 3-2, but it was much too little much too late. Hopefully Allen can build on the third period last night to play better for a full 60 minutes on Friday.

- How bad were the first two periods? Florida scored the first goal of the game which is never a good sign since Allen's record when giving up the first goal is 6-18-0-0. The Everblades followed up their first goal with a second just 35 seconds later. Allen responded to make the score 2-1 on a power play goal from Colton Hargrove. Allen was being outplayed but were keeping the score close. That didn't last long as Florida scored its third goal of the period at the 17:56 mark and took a 3-1 lead into the first intermission. The Everblades out shot Allen 16-8 in the first period and had many more quality chances than the Americans. When you consider Florida has not lost a game all season when leading after the first period and how they were outplaying Allen, it felt like the game was already over after the first period.

- The second period was a repeat of the first period. Allen closed the gap to 3-2 on a Hank Crone goal early in the period but Florida responded with three more unanswered goals. The Everblades outshot Allen 19-8 in the period and took a 6-2 lead into the second intermission. The shot totals after two periods were 37-16.

- When you are getting blown out like Allen was last night after two periods, the third period becomes important. With two more games against Florida this weekend the Americans had to build some momentum by winning the third period. That is exactly what Allen did, outshooting Florida 13-6 and outscoring the Everblades 3-2. Allen took advantage of a couple of power plays on goals by Hargrove and Crone. Hargrove also had an even strength goal to complete his second hat trick in the last five games.

- If Allen is going ti stop the bleeding on Friday it will need a much better defensive effort from the entire team. Before the current three game losing streak, Allen had won 11 of 13 games and given up an average of 2.7 goals per game. In the last three games, all losses, all at home, Allen has allowed an average of 7.3 goals per game. You can't outscore bad defense no matter how much skill you have on your team. A three-game losing streak doesn't sound like much but only one other ECHL team currently has a longer streak. The last time Allen lost three straight games was over two months ago in early December.

- The goal scorers last night were Colton Hargrove (25,26,27) and Hank Crone (24,25). Here are the video highlights: https://www.echl.com/en/video/2023/2/florida-everblades-vs-allen-americans---feb-15-2023-livCKVam

- Here are the game recaps from both teams:

Florida Everblades: https://allenamericans.com/media/game-recap-everblades-jump-on-americans-early-cruise-to-8-5-win/

- One bright spot last night was special teams. The Americans took only two minor penalties the entire game. Allen was 3-5 on the power play, Florida was 1-2. The Americans have climbed to #6 in the ECHL in overall power play percentage at 22.4% (47-210). The penalty kill is ranked #11 at 81.8%

OTHER COMMENTS

- The poor defensive play by the Americans last night took away from a couple of four-point offensive performances by Colton Hargrove (3G, 1A) and Hank Crone (2G, 2A). In addition, Liam Finlay had two assists and Jack Combs one. The "Four Sure" group all got points and had 73% (11-15) of Allen's points. Here are the current stats for the "Four Sure" gang:

  • Hank Crone leads the ECHL in scoring (64 points)
  • Jack Combs is second in the ECHL in scoring (61 points)
  • Colton Hargrove is #1 in the ECHL in goals (27 points)
  • Jack Combs is #2 in the ECHL in goals (26 points)
  • Hank Crone in #3 in the ECHL in goals (25 points)
  • Hank Crone is #3 in the ECHL in assists (39 assists)
  • Hank Crone is #1 in the ECHL in rookie scoring (64 points)
  • Liam Finlay is #3 in the ECHL in rookie scoring (48 points)
  • Colton Hargrove is #1 in longest point streak in the ECHL (22 games)
  • Hank Crone is #2 in the longest point streak in the ECHL (15 games)
  • Jack Combs is #2 in the current longest point streak in the ECHL (10 games)
  • Colton Hargrove has scored 23 goals in the last 21 games
  • Colton Hargrove has scored nine goals in the last five games.
  • The "Four Sure" gang has accounted for 62% (101 of 160) of Allen's goals this season

- Despite Allen's losing streak it has not lost ground in the standings because the other teams have also been struggling. The Mountain Division has one team with a points percentage above second place Wichita's points percentage. Here are the number of teams in each division with a points percentage above .571:

  • 1 - Mountain (Idaho)
  • 4 - Central (Indy, Cincinnati, Toledo, Fort Wayne)
  • 5 - South (Florida, Jacksonville, South Carolina, Greenville, Atlanta)
  • 3 - North (Newfoundland, Maine, Reading)

- Here are the points earned by each Mountain Division team over the last 10 games. Maximum would be 20 points.

  • 16 points: Idaho
  • 12 points: Allen
  • 12 points: Kansas City
  • 11 points: Utah
  • 9 points: Tulsa
  • 7 points: Wichita
  • 6 points: Rapid City

- Friday night three Mountain Division teams will take on opponents outside the division. In addition to Florida at Allen, Utah is at Savannah and Toledo is at Rapid City. The only in-division game is Idaho at Kansas City. Tulsa and Wichita are idle.

- DID YOU KNOW: The ECHL Stats post today is about point streaks. Colton Hargrove's current 22 game point streak is the longest in Allen's history. You have to go back to the 2007-08 season to find an ECHL point streak longer than 22 games. David Desharnais (Cincinnati) had a 27 game points streak in 2007-08 as a rookie and scored 106 points (his only season in the ECHL). Two years later he was in the NHL where he played 524 games.

Allen’s Colton Hargrove had a hat trick last night to score in his 22nd straight game. He has scored 23 goals during his 22-game point streak and now leads the ECHL in goals with 27. Here are the longest ECHL point streaks in the last 15 years, since 2008-09:

*22 games: Colton Hargrove, Allen, 2022-23
22 games: Liam Pecararo, Greenville, 2021-22
19 games: Chad Costello, Allen, 2015-16
18 games: Wes Goldie, Alaska, 2010-11
17 games: Reid Gardiner, Kalamazoo 2018-19
17 games: Chad Costello, Allen 2014-15
17 games: Mitch Wahl, Florida 2014-15
17 games: Tyler Donati, Elmira 2009-10

Allen vs Florida Series Preview, Tonight's Lineup, Kevin Mandolese's NHL Debut, ECHL Games Played Record and More

Tonight, the Allen Americans begin a three-game series against the Florida Everblades. It will be yet another important series for the Americans as they are in a close race for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Mountain Division. Allen is currently tied with Rapid City for the final playoff spot (45 points) and trail Kansas City by four points for third place in the division.

- For Allen fans this week it is a rare opportunity to see a team from the Eastern Conference and to see an ECHL team for the first time. Florida is tied for first place in the South Division (61 points) and the Everblades are the defending Kelly Cup champions. Two former Allen Americans are on the Florida roster. Defenseman Nolan Kneen played in Allen the last two seasons and forward Kyle Neuber was on the Americans 2016 Kelly Cup championship team. Unfortunately, Neuber has been on injured reserve since January 22nd so he will likely not be on the trip to Allen.

- Allen will be without coach Chad Costello on the bench tonight as he will be serving a one game suspension that was announced yesterday after he was ejected from the game against Fort Wayne on Saturday. From my understanding when a coach is suspended, he can be in the locker room until two hours before game time and then must not have any contact with the team during the game. He can still be in the building but with absolutely no communication with the team. What this means for Allen is Costello will handle all of the pregame preparation. Assistant coach Aaron Gens and assistant coach (manager of hockey administration) Chris Meriney will be sharing duties on the bench.

- The first game of this series will be critical for Allen. The Americans were riding high after the Utah trip and the first game against Fort Wayne. The Americans had a four-game win streak, were averaging 6.25 goals per game, and were full of confidence. Two games later Allen is now on a two-game losing streak having allowed 14 goals in the last two games against Fort Wayne and allowing Allen 50 shots on Saturday. All of the momentum from the four-game win streak evaporated after the two losses to the Komets. The Americans need to snatch that momentum back with a good performance tonight.

- Florida plays a similar style of hockey as Allen so you can expect an enjoyable series this week. The Everblades are 5-3-1-1 in the last 10 games compared to 7-3-0-0 for Allen. Both teams have lost its last two games. Florida's record on the road is 10-6-4-2 (.591) compared to Allen's home record of 9-10-1-0 (.475).

- When you compare overall stats Florida has the edge as you would assume given the Everblades are #5 in the league in points percentage (.678) and Allen is #18 (.489). However, there are some key areas where Allen has the advantage. Here are some key comparative stats.

- Allen is ranked a respectable #11 in average goals scored (3.37) but is ranked #22 in average goals allowed (3.63) for a differential of -0.26. Florida is ranked lower in average goals scored at #14 (3.33) but is one of the best defense teams in the league, ranked #5 (2.78). The Everblades goal differential is +0.55.

- Shots and goals by period are very telling between these team and the third period tells the story. Allen has been outshot 503-429 in the third period and outscored 61-51. Florida has outshot its opponents 444-401 in the third period which produced a 58-34 third period goals advantage.

- The likelihood of fisticuffs in this series is pretty high. Florida is ranked #2 in the ECHL in fighting majors (26) and Allen is ranked #5 (22). Keep in mind players no longer on the Allen roster (Pochiro, Blachman, Leppard) represent nine of the 22 fighting majors.

- Allen has a clear advantage if any of the games against Florida go extra time. The Americans have gone extra time just five times (11%) this season but have one of the best records in the league (.800). Allen is 3-1 in overtimes and 1-0 in shootouts. Florida has gone to extra time 11 times (24%) and has one of the worst records in the league (.364). The Everblades are 4-4 in overtimes and 0-3 in shootouts.

- When it comes to scoring first the advantage goes to Florida. Allen has scored first in 50% (23 of 46) of its games with a record of 16-6-1-0 (.717) The Americans record when they give up the first goal is 6-17-0-0 (.261). Florida has scored first in 44% of its games (20 of 45) with a record of 17-1-1-1. The Everblades record when they give up the first goal is 10-10-3-2 (.500). A good start will be key for both teams but even more so for the Americans. Florida is the only team in the league that is still perfect when leading after the first period (11-0-0-0). Allen's record when trailing after the first period is 3-13-0-0.

- Special teams will play a key role in this series. Allen leads the league in penalty minutes (895) and minor penalties (295). Florida is ranked #7 in penalty minutes (661) and has taken 213 minor penalties. Allen's home power play percentage is ranked #17 (20.7%) and the home penalty kill is ranked #8 (82.4%). Allen has scored four shorthanded goals and allowed four shorthanded goals. On the road Florida is ranked dead last on the power play (9.6%) and #24 (73.3%) on the penalty kill. Florida has scored eight shorthanded goals (ranked #3) and allowed six shorthanded goals. If Allen can capitalize on its special teams advantage it will go a long why to attaining a win tonight.

OTHER COMMENTS

- Colton Hargrove will try and extend his 21-game point streak to night. Hargrove has at least one point in every Allen game since December 30. Just as amazing is he has scored 20 goals in the last 20 games.

- The leading scorer in the ECHL, Zach O'Brien, is back with Newfoundland after spending time in the AHL (Newfoundland). OBrien has 61 points and leads Hank Crone and Jack Combs by just one point. Newfoundland is idle tonight so if Crone and/or Combs have a multi point night they will take over the ECHL points lead.

- I am sure you have heard by now that goalie Kevin Mandolese made his NHL debut last night for Ottawa and came away with a 3-2 shootout victory over the Islanders. According to the NHL his 46 saves is the second most in a victorious NHL debut in league history (since 1955-56 when shots on goal began being tracked). According to the ECHL press release it is #1 all-time, but I will go with the NHL on this one. Ken Wregget made 48 saves in his NHL debut playing for Toronto on December 12, 1983, in a win over the Hartford Whalers. Wregget was still playing junior hockey (WHL Lethbridge Broncos) at the time and the game was his first as a professional. He went on to win the 1992 Stanley Cup while serving as the backup goalie to Tom Barrasso in Pittsburgh.

- Kevin Mandolese joins the goalie club that has won games in the ECHL, AHL and NHL in the same season. Here are his records at all three levels:

  • ECHL - six games played (4-1-0), GAA 2.45, save percentage .927.
  • AHL - 13 games played (4-7-2), GAA 3.60, save percentage .879.
  • NHL - one game played (1-0-0), GAA 1.85, save percentage .958.

- I had a couple of questions asking about whether Chad Costello had ever been ejected from a game as a player and the answer to that question is yes. However, tonight will be his first ever suspension.

- There are eight games on the ECHL schedule tonight. Here is the ECHL Today with all of the previews.  https://www.echl.com/en/news/2023/2/echl-today-feb-15

DID YOU KNOW: Stick taps to Atlanta’s Michael Pelech who set the ECHL all-time record for games played last night. Here are the ECHL active players with the most games played. Number of ECHL seasons played is in parenthesis:

860: Michael Pelech, Atlanta (14)
769: Justin Taylor, Kalamazoo (13)
520: Shawn Szydlowski, Orlando (11)
518: Matt Register, Idaho (10)
452: Anthony Collins, Kalamazoo (10)
437: Andrew Cherniwchan, South Carolina (11)
430: A.J. White, Idaho, (7)

Hank Crone - An In Depth Interview with the Texas Native

Allen Americans rookie Hank Crone leads all ECHL rookies with 60 points (23G, 37A) and will likely break Allen's all-time rookie scoring record of 76 points set by Alex Lavoie in 2013-14. Hank is also tied with teammate Jack Combs for second in the league in points. ECHL Rookie of the Year and even ECHL MVP are within Crone's grasp with 35% of the regular season remaining.

I had a chance to sit down with Hank last week for an in-depth interview. I came away from the interview learning a lot about what makes him tick. First and foremost is the strength he derives from his family. He is a proud Texan who loves playing pro hockey close to home in front of so many friends and relatives. I also learned a lot about all the bumps in the road he incurred along the way after he left home at 16 to play hockey until he returned at 24 to play pro hockey for the Allen Americans. I appreciated his openness and honesty to help tell his story and how adversity has given him the drive that makes him successful. I hope you enjoy this story of Hank Crone.

Hank Crone

The first thing you find out when you sit down to interview Hank Crone is he is a proud Texan, born and raised in Cedar Hill which is a suburb southwest of Dallas and 40 miles from Allen. Hank was born February 19, 1998, as Henry Crone but has never been called anything but Hank. As he told me, "My mom doesn't even call me Henry when she is mad at me."

Hank's parents, Ray and Kristie Crone, still live in the same house in Cedar Hill they built the year Hank was born. Ray and Kristie are high school sweethearts who met while attending Waxahachie High School. The Crones are a family of four. Hank has a younger sister (20), Anna, who attends TCU and is about to graduate. Another Hank quote, "She got the brains, she is about to graduate almost two years early and I always joke with her she also has a little bit of a Denver University degree because she helped me out a lot." Hank's dad played a couple of years of minor league baseball and is a long-time baseball scout, currently working for the Detroit Tigers. He worked as a scout for the Boston Red Sox for 15 years.

The Crones - Anna, Ray, Kristie and Hank

In addition to his immediate family, Hank has an aunt (Mary Ellen Crone) who attends every Allen game and his grandfather, Ray Crone Sr. is his biggest supporter. Ray Crone Sr., a right-handed pitcher, played major league baseball for the Milwaukee Braves (1954-57) and New York/San Francisco Giants (1957-58). After retiring from the mound Crone was a long-time scout, based in Texas, working for the Montreal Expos, Baltimore Orioles, San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks. Here is a great synopsis of Roy Crone Sr. and his baseball career from coming up in the minors with Hank Aaron, to the ups and downs of professional sports, to his post playing days as a scout. This is a great read, especially if you are a baseball fan. https://sabr.org/bioproj/person/ray-crone/

Hank and his Grandfather, Ray Crone Sr.,  91 years young

- With all of that baseball DNA how did Hank become a hockey player? His dad did play youth hockey when he lived in Connecticut before his family moved to Texas when he was 12. His dad was always a hockey fan. When the Minnesota North Stars moved to Texas Hank's parents got season tickets, so he was always at Stars games as a kid.  There are two answers to why Hank chose hockey. First, he loved hockey from a very early age and was very good at it. Second, he realized at a young age (12) he wasn't nearly as good at baseball. Hank lived close to a Dr. Pepper Starcenter that opened in Duncanville in 2000 in the wake of the popularity of the Dallas Stars after they won the Stanley Cup in 1999. The rink was close to Hank's home. Another Hank quote. "I tried to skate when I was three and was hooked. It was immediately my new daycare. At first, I never wanted to put on the gear, I just wanted to skate. My parents finally told me I couldn't play if I didn't put on the equipment. It took me a bit to get the message as I am a little stubborn, but once I figured out how to skate around with the equipment it was game over." Hank tells stories about his parents dropping him off at the rink in the summer at 10:00 am and picking him up at 5:00 pm and the rink lady made sure he was fed.

Hank played in house leagues until he was around eight and then started playing travel hockey. He played with an older AAA team until one was created for his age group. It was called the Texas Attack and then became the current name, the Dallas Stars Elite. Hank traveled the world as a youngster playing hockey. When on a Bauer Selects team he played in a tournament in Moscow, Russia when he was 10 and in Stockholm, Sweden at 11. Hank has also been to Germany for the Five Nations Tournament and to Slovakia for the Ivan Hlinka Tournament.

The Younger Version of Hank Crone circa 2002

Hank gives a lot of credit to the many great coaches he had growing up in the DFW area. One of them, Jordan French, has been his mentor since he was six or seven. Hank lives with French and his family for part of the summer (in Nashville). French has his own business helping players at all levels, from the NHL to youth hockey, in skills development and training.

If you can characterize Crone's amateur (junior and college) career, I would describe it as one where he was constantly trying to prove himself and feeling he was not always given a fair shake. He admits he uses that as a chip on his shoulder for motivation.  Hank's dream was always to play for the US National team. He went to its top forty camp but did not make the team. His first stop after leaving home at 16 was to play junior hockey in the USHL for the Omaha Lancers. In his second year he was traded to the Fargo Force which turned out perfect for Hank. As he told me, "I had played for the coach (Cary Eades) in Germany in the Five Nations Tournament, so he knew me and knew what I was capable of doing." Hank ended his career in Fargo as the all-time leader in points (164). goals (58) and assists (106).

Hank's college career was unique as he attended three different schools. He committed to Boston University when he was 15 years old. As Hank tells the story, "Boston University was my dream school. My dad worked for the Red Sox for 15 years and we went to Cape Cod every summer. I always loved the BU guys and the whole vibe at that school. I wanted to go to BU more than anything. The fact that I only went there one year, I have absolutely nothing bad to say about the school. It was probably the most fun year of my life." In his one season at BU, Hank played in 35 games and had 12 points (2G, 10A). The plan was for him to return to the USHL (Fargo) for one season and then return to BU. However, a couple of months after his first season at BU there was a coaching change and things went sideways.

As planned Hank went back to Fargo (USHL) for the 2018-19 season and then decided to make a switch to Denver University. Hank played two years in Denver and had 25 points (11G, 25A). He also earned his degree with a major in communication and minor in marketing while at Denver. The 2020-21 season was the bubble year because of COVID, and it was not going very well for Hank. He was at a point where he wasn't sure what was going on and what he should do. He had a year of eligibility remaining and was debating if he wanted to be the guy that goes to three different schools or go to Europe and enjoy hockey. After talking to a lot of people close to him, they told him this is an example of adversity, and you have to stick with it and show if you really love hockey, this adversity isn't going to bring you down. He got through the end of the 2020-21 season but played in only 13 games and had nine points (5G, 4A). Hank finished fourth on the team in average points per game, so he knew he was doing something right.

After the 2020-21 season at Denver, Hank was about to sign somewhere in Europe when he got a call from the assistant coach (Byron Pool) at Northern Michigan University (NMU) who was his assistant coach in Fargo. As Hank described it "We had been close for a long time. He put me in touch with NMU head coach (Grant Potulny) and I can't thank him enough for not only believing in me but coaching me and being a real figure in my hockey career." It proved to be a great decision for Hank as he led NMU in scoring with 44 points (13G, 31A) in 32 games and was nominated for the Hobey Baker award.

How did Hank Crone end up in Allen after he completed his collegiate career? Another story of timing. Hank was within hours of signing to play for a team in the Austrian league when he got a call from Chad Costello. Hank had met Chad four or five years ago during the summer. Twice a week all the local players that were playing at a high level or used to play at a high level would get together at Valley Ranch and scrimmage. Chad was playing in Germany at the time but joined the Valley Ranch group when he was in Dallas in the summer. Here is how it went in Hank's words, "We were line mates at one of the scrimmages and had a lot of fun together. I remember picking his brain and asking him questions. It turned into a relationship where I could lean on him if I had a question or needed some advice. He was a big part of me deciding to go to Northern Michigan. I called him and told him I was thinking of going to Europe and he advised me to go to school and light it up and show people I was capable. So, when Chad called me after he got the Allen coaching job, he explained how he saw my career panning out and what I could make of my career whether it was in Allen or in Europe. I saw a lot of similarities in myself to him. I thought to myself I can either move across the world to play for not that much money or I can stay at home and get an experience not a lot of guys get, while playing for someone who really values my game."

Hank's take on the Allen team, "We have the best group in our locker room. You can ask anyone in the room, and we all knew at some point things would turn around. We are now seeing what we are capable of, and it is great. There are so many guys I knew of and others I actually knew when the season started. Now that we are 40 games into the season it is really like a family, and it is special."

Some questions to get to know Hank a little better:

Q: Who is your roommate?

A: I live in a house and there are five of us in the house. I room with Finlay on the road. We played together at Denver University and were line mates our first year. He was my best friend at Denver, and I talked to him this summer about playing together for a coach that values our type of game. I gave his name to Costello and told him I think Liam would be a no brainer in this league to help us out. It has worked out pretty good so far.

Q: What is your nickname?

A:  I think Hank in itself is a pretty funny one since not a lot of people are named Hank. But last year and this year it has been Croner so most likely that is the one that will stick.

Q: What is the significance of wearing #67?

A: I wear #67 because that was my number growing up. I was one of a handful of players from South Dallas on my teams as I got older. Most were from the northside like Plano and Frisco. I lived off Highway 67 and I have always liked stuff with seven. Growing up there was nobody wearing #67 and I thought it looked good. Once I left home, I was never able to wear #67 in junior or college but tried to do something similar. I wore #7 in Fargo, #37 at Denver. When I signed in Allen, I called Tony (equipment manager) to get #67.

Q: Who is your hockey hero?

A: Being a Dallas fan growing up I always liked watching Mike Ribeiro. I actually played with him a decent amount over the summer. Of the more obvious players I would say Patrick Kane.

Q: What is you earliest hockey memory?

A: All the stuff I did at the rink in Duncanville. I basically lived there.

Q: What do you remember your parents telling you as a kid playing hockey that you still remember now?

A: My dad always used to tell me the game is not fun unless you are good. It means to me you have to always put in the work, nobody is going to do it for you.

Q: How do you describe your style of play?

A: I would say high skill and creative but at the end of the day I would say my biggest asset is my hockey IQ. Being an undersized guy (5'9" 160), you have to find a way to get around some things on the ice.

Q: Do you have a favorite actor?

A: Will Farrell and Jimmy Fallon

Q: Your favorite actress?

A: My girlfriend is going to give me crap on this, but it is Ana de Armas.

Q; Your favorite genre of music?

A: Alternative, I am not a big music blasting guy. I am more a background music guy.

Q: Do you have a favorite singer or group?

A: I like Tame Impala, but if I hear a good song, I don't care who sings it.

Q: If you could have lunch with anyone living who would it be?

A: Tiger Woods

Q: One thing people would be surprised to learn about you?

A: I am pretty simple, there is not a lot that I need to be happy. Being around positive people that I enjoy is all that I need.

Q: What do you like to do away from the rink?

A: I enjoy golf and I have a friend group of four from Dallas, two still live here, one plays hockey in Bakersfield. We play video games, either NHL or Call of Duty.

Q: What chore do you hate doing?

A: I escaped a lot of the chores growing up with all of my hockey. Now with five players in a house, Peressini is the one getting on us for not being the cleanest. I will say I hate doing anything related to dishes.

Q: What do you have that has great value to you but not as much value to others.

A: I have a lot of baseball memorabilia specifically related to my grandfather and my dad. It has the Crone name on it, so it means a lot. Both my grandfather and father won world series as scouts. My dad was a scout for Boston when they broke the 86-year curse to win the 2004 World Series. We have that world series ring with the Crone name on it.

Q: Who do you admire as a leader?

A: My grandfather, he lived his life as a professional athlete with the approach you only get to do this once. He never had any regrets and when he was done playing, he showed there was more to life than being a professional athlete. He went on to raise a incredible family and he has been the most supportive grandparent I could ask for.

Q: What would you to do if you weren't playing hockey?

A: Unrealistically I would be a pro golfer. Realistically, I think I would be good in sales.

Q: Where is the most interesting place you have ever visited?

A: I played in a hockey tournament in Moscow when I was ten. It was quite a culture shock. I don't remember everything but there are still details that stick with me to this day.

Q: If you could live in another country for two years where would it be?

A: Switzerland

Q: Do you have any pregame rituals or superstition?

A: I have changed over the years as I have matured. I used to be the guy that if things were going well everything had to be the exact same. Now I keep it more generic, and things can change a little bit. Somethings don't change like the time I get to the rink, my hydration, and preparation but that is more a routine than anything else.

Q: Who is the funniest guy on the team?

A: I will go with Finlay because I know him so well and I am biased. It is really a tossup because everyone on the team contributes to the laughter.

Q: When was the last time you lost something?

A: The friend group I have has a key chain that somebody always has to have. I have recently misplaced it so when they read this, I will get some text messages. I am not the first guy that has lost it and it always turns back up, so I am hoping it happens to me.

Q: What do you like to do to kill time on the bus?

A: Just hang out with the guys. Obviously, we spend a lot of time on our phones. It depends on the bus. If it is a normal bus and shorter trip there is a lot of talking. If it is a sleeper bus, I likely will take a nap and get through it. I don't like being on the bus.

Q: Tell me your best bus story?

A: This story is out there on social media, so I don't mind repeating it. When I was in juniors playing for Fargo, we were going to Des Moines, a seven-hour trip, and our coach, Cary Eades, passed a kidney stone on the bus. I thought that was the most insane thing I had seen in my entire life. We looked at him in a different but good way after he handled something like that on the bus.

As we wrapped up our interview, I asked Hank if there is anything else he would like to share about himself. Here is what he said, "I just want everyone that goes to the games to know how appreciative I am of being in Texas. Even though I don't have an accent and am not that outdoorsy, I don't have a horse and a cowboy hat, but I am a true Texan and I take a lot of pride in that. Especially being in the sport of hockey where there are not a lot of Texans. The thought of representing the state at whatever level is something that is important to me. I am very appreciative of playing in Allen. It is so cool to be playing here. I don't think people really understand it until they are at our games. The fans are just like Dallas Stars fans. I think our entire room appreciates the energy.

I thought a good close to the profile on Hank Crone is to share what his coaches had to say about him:

"Hank has been one our most consistent players. The thing about Hank is he doesn't cheat the game. He plays on the penalty kill, he defends, and he makes people around him better"....Grant Potulny, Northern Michigan University head coach.

"Hank is an offensive threat all over the ice. Even when we are in the defensive zone, he knows how to time it where he can read the play and know when to jump past the opponent's defensemen and get opportunities for us. He is a great kid that leads by example. He is a competitor that wants to score. He does what he has to do in the defensive zone to help us, but we have him here for his offense and he has been great for us".....Assistant Coach Aaron Gens

"Hank is one of those players that surprises you every day whether it is his skill or making big time plays in big time moments. His compete level allows him to out compete guys that are bigger, stronger and faster just by his will. I knew when I signed him, I was getting one of the most skilled players in the league. I did not know I was getting one of the best competitors in the league. We give him a little bit of leeway because we get rewards with his offensive talent so much. He is a competitor, and he is here to win. He is kind of what the Allen Americans stand for as far as skill but also team first decision making. We love having him around and he has a funny loving personality. I connect well with him, and I am sure glad he is here. He plays 22-24 minutes per game which is incredible for a rookie. When I recruited Hank, I told him my plan was to give him the keys to the Ferrari and help him keep it on the road. He has been easy to coach, and I only have great things to say about him as a player and a person. He is perfect for our team and our team is perfect for him.",,,,,Head Coach Chad Costello

Two Shots, Two Goals in 1st 63 Second, 6-1 Loss, 90 PIMS, 50 Shots Allowed, Coach Ejected Says it All - Game Recap, Video Highlights and More

The Fort Wayne scored on its first, second and sixth shots of the game last night and it seemed over before it started. The final result was a 6-1 Allen loss, on a specialty jersey night, a Saturday night, before a crowd of 3714 at the CUTX Event Center. Yes, the Saturday night specialty jersey curse is alive and well.

- Fort Wayne had a 3-0 lead before many fans had settled into their seats, scoring 46 seconds into the game, then again 17 seconds later and a third time at the 5:50 mark. Allen was clearly not ready for what the Komets threw at them to start the game.

- Fort Wayne increased its lead to 4-0 in the second period before Allen scored its lone goal of the game. Jack Combs scored his league leading 26th goal of the season. It was a power play goal assisted by Colton Hargrove who extended his league leading point streak to 21 games  (32 points - 212G, 12A). Combs now has the second longest current ECHL point streak at 11 games.

- Fort Wayne took a 4-1 lead into the second intermission. Overcoming a three goal deficit in the third period to win a game is a tall task against any team but even more so against the Komets. Fort Wayne has one of the best records in the ECHL when leading after the second period, a lofty 19-0-1-0.

- The third period was all down hill for the Americans. It started at the 2:18 mark when things went awry after Allen's Robidoux was given three minor penalties (tripping, roughing and cross-checking) as well as a misconduct penalty. Watching the play live it looked like there were cross checks by both teams and the tripping penalty was against the Komets. I am sure the Allen bench thought the penalties would be even so when Chad Costello heard it would be a four minute power play for Fort Wayne he let the referee know what he thought which resulted in his ejection. Whenever a coach gets ejected from a game it is reviewed by the league office, so it remains to be seen what other action is taken.

- When the dust settled there were 23 penalties in the third period alone, 14 against Allen. For the entire game Allen was assessed 20 penalties and Fort Wayne was assessed 15 penalties. Maybe the most amazing stat from the game is there were a total of 35 penalties, but not a single fighting major. Some PIMS stats from the ECHL Daily Report:

  • Allen's 90 penalty minutes is the third highest all season.
  • Allen's 15 minor penalties is third highest all season.
  •  Mikael Robidoux's 30 penalty minutes is third highest all season
  • Combined 150 penalty minutes is this highest all season
  • Allen leads the ECHL in total penalty minutes (895)
  • Allen leads the ECHL in average PIMS per game (19.46).

- It was a disappointing ending to a series that started so positive on Thursday night when Allen beat Fort Wayne 7-3 and scored three power play goals. In the final two games of the series Allen gave up 14 goals, 92 shots, went 1-9 on the power play and was outscored in the first periods 5-1.

- After a rough two games it is now time for Allen to take today off to refresh, reflect and refocus. Allen will need to rebound next week against the top team in the South Division. The Florida Everblades come to town for games on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

OTHER COMMENTS

- It was a strange group of games in the ECHL last night. There were four shutouts and six winning teams scored 6+ goals. Wheeling scored 10 goals in beating Norfolk 10-2. The 10 goals was highest total in the ECHL all season and the eight goal margin of victory was also the highest all season.

- The Mountain Division winners last night were Kansas City, Idaho and Rapid City (in overtime against Wichita). Looking at streaks, the teams moving forward are Kansas City (4-0-0-0), Idaho (3-0-0-0) and Rapid City (2-0-0-0). The teams falling back are Utah (0-4-1-0), Tulsa (0-3-0-0), Wichita (0-2-1-0) and Allen (0-2-0-0). Here are the division standings by points with games remaining home (H) and away (A)

  • 74 points - Idaho, 13 (H), 13 (A)
  • 54 points - Wichita, 9 (H), 16 (A)
  • 49 points - Kansas City, 12 (H), 15 (A)
  • 45 points - Allen, 16 (H), 10 (A)
  • 45 points - Rapid City, 15 (H), 11 (A)
  • 40 points - Utah, 16 (H), 11 (A)
  • 38 points - Tulsa, 10 (H), 17 (A)

- It sure doesn't  take very long for momentum to change in the ECHL. Allen was riding high after the Utah trip and the first game against Fort Wayne. The Americans had a four game win streak, were averaging 6.25 goals per game, and were full of confidence. Two games later Allen is on a two game losing streak having allowed an average of 7.00 goals per game. Allen gave up 50 shots last night. Welcome to the ebb and flow of ECHL hockey. The Allen Americans need to flow and ebb back in the other direction next week.

DID YOU KNOW: The ECHL Stats post today is about goals scored and allowed differential. Allen is ranked #11 in average goals scored (3.37) and #22 in average goals allowed (3.63) for a differential of -26.

Here are teams that are good at both ends of the ice. ECHL teams with the biggest difference between average goals scored and allowed. It is highly likely the Kelly Cup champion is on this list.

+2.04: Idaho
+1.03: Newfoundland
+0.91: Maine
+0.85: Indy
+0.75: Toledo
+0.66: South Carolina
+0.66: Reading

Idaho is #1 in average goals scored (4.17) and also #1 in average goals allowed (2.13).

The last time the same team was #1 in goals scored and allowed was Cincinnati in 2018-19. The Cyclones averaged 3.92 goals per game and allowed 2.44 for a goal differential of +1.48.

Cincinnati had the best regular season record (Brabham Cup) in 2018-19 but lost (4-1) in the second round of the Kelly Cup playoffs to Toledo. The Brabham Cup curse struck again.

Idaho is the class of the league this season, but the Steelheads must avoid the Brabham Cup curse in the playoffs. The last team to win the regular season and playoffs was Alaska in 2013-14.

Allen Streak Snapped, Game Recap, Video Highlights, Costello Comments, Tonight's Preview, "Four Sure" Streaks, ECHL Goal Leaders and More

To say it was an off night for the Allen Americans last night would be an understatement. Allen lost to Fort Wayne by a score of 8-6 before a crowd of 3025 at the CUTX Event Center. Hockey is a strange game with skill and will interacting in different ways from night to night. Teams can go from looking unbeatable to unwinnable over night. That is what happened in the first two games of the series with Fort Wayne.

- Allen was the victor on Thursday despite giving up the first goal of the game. The Americans scored four unanswered goals in the second period which led to a 7-2 win. The Americans won the special teams battle going 3-6 on the power play and 0-4 on the penalty kill. Last night was just the opposite. Fort Wayne gave up the first goal of the game but then scored four unanswered goals to win the game 8-6 going away. The Komets won the special team battle going 1-4 on the power play and 0-5 on the penalty kill.

- Allen was trailing 5-2 after the second period and as you watched the third period you could tell coach Costello decided the only way back in the game was changing the style of play to a wide open game with a lot of risks. The Americans won the third period 4-2, primarily using the top two lines. The high risk high reward comeback almost worked. Allen trailed 6-2 early in the third period and cut the lead to 7-6  with over eight minutes remaining in the game. Allen couldn't get the equalizer even after pulling the goalie. Fort Wayne scored an empty net goal with 26 seconds remaining to make the final score 8-6.

- The 14 combined goals was the most in an Allen games all season. The previous high was 11 in a 7-4 loss in Idaho. The league high this season for combined goals is 16. The last time Allen was involved in a game with 14 combined goals was October 18, 2019 at home when the Americans lost to Utah 10-4.

- Goal scorers for Allen were Jack Combs (25), Liam Finlay (22,23), Colby McAuley (4,5) and Colton Hargrove (24). Hank Crone had three assists and Chad Butcher two. Here are the video highlights of the Allen goals: https://www.echl.com/en/video/2023/2/fort-wayne-komets-vs-allen-americans---feb-10-2023-AggZyOgX

COACH COSTELLO'S COMMENTS

"We made too many mistakes tonight, but give our guys credit, we didn't quit. We will fix our mistakes and get right back at it tomorrow night."

"We were playing at their pace for much of the game and not playing our style."

"Our power play was not good tonight after they made some adjustments. We will fix that for the game tomorrow."

Heard this from coach Costello this morning - "Peressini will be in goal tonight, Skelly will replace Gally and Bethune will be a game time decision."

- It was a losing cause but the "Four Sure Gang" all had points again last night. The streaks these guys have going is ridiculous. Last night Crone had three assists, Finlay had two goals, Hargrove and Combs had one goal. All four are now at the top of the ECHL in goals (See DID YOU KNOW below). Here are some streak stats.

  • Colton Hargrove now has points in 20 straight games. That is the longest streak in the ECHL this season. He also broke Chad Costello's record of  a 19 game point streak set in 2015-16.
  • "Four Sure" is living up to its name. They have the top four current point streaks in the ECHL. #1 Hargrove (20 games), #2 Crone (15 games), #3 Finlay (12 games) and #4 Combs (10 games).
  • Hargrove has the longest point streak in the ECHL all season (20 games), Crone is second (15 games).

Here is an update with the points that go along with the streaks:

  • Colton Hargrove - 20 game point streak, 31 points (20G, 11A)
  • Liam Finlay - 12 game point streak, 22 points (12G, 10A)
  • Hank Crone - 15 game point streak, 27 points (9G, 18A)
  • Jack Combs - points in 19 of last 22 games including 10 straight, 33 points (12G, 21A)

- Colby McAuley came with in an eyelash of having hat tricks in both games against Fort Wayne. On Thursday night the puck was about to go into the net that would have given McAuley a hat trick until Hargrove put it over the line. The right play by Hargrove but no hat trick for Colby. Last night it looked like McAuley had scored a hat trick when the puck went across the goal line under the goalie's pad. The referee was on  the wrong side of the net to see the puck. The referee reviewed the play but the overhead camera would not have been any help in this case. Another hat trick lost. Colby is averaging over a point per game since joining Allen 11 games ago. He has a total of 13 points (5G, 8A) and in the last three games he has seven points (4G, 3A).

- Defenseman Zach Massicotte had an assist last night and has seven points (3G, 4A) in the last eight games. Massicotte led the team last night with a plus/minus of +3. In the last two series (Fort Wayne & Utah) he has a plus/minus of +8.

- Allen's goal each week is to win a minimum of two out of three games. The game tonight is big for both teams. The Americans and Komets are in fourth place in their respective divisions. Neither team can afford to lose two games in this series. Will Allen bounce back after a subpar performance last night? When the winning goalie has a .760 save percentage and the losing goalie is at .829, both teams will be looking for better performances tonight. It is not all on the goalies as there was a lot of team defense absent last night from both teams.

-  I know grade A opportunities are more important than shot totals and Allen has had a much higher percentage of those type of opportunities against the Komets. However, the shot total after the first two games favor Fort Wayne by a large margin, 86-51. Allen's home record is 4-7-0-0 when they get outshot and 5-2-1-0 when they outshoot the opponent. Would be a good sign to see the shot totals closer tonight.

OTHER COMMENTS

- There were a lot of high scoring one sided games in the Mountain Division last night. The exception was Kansas City at Wichita. The Mavericks scored 32 seconds into the the game and never trailed, but it took overtime to get the win. The other two games were one-sided. Rapid City beat Utah 7-1 and Idaho beat Tulsa 6-1. Here are the current Mountain Division standings with points in parenthesis:

  • .800 - Idaho (72)
  • .587 - Wichita (54)
  • .534 - Kansas City (47)
  • .500 - Allen (45)
  • .478 - Rapid City (43)
  • .443 - Utah (39)
  • .432 - Tulsa (38)
The Mountain Division is the only division with a team at .800 or above, the only division without a team with a points percentage in the .600's and the only division without a team lower then .400. With the exception of Idaho the Mountain Division is the tightest in the ECHL. By the way, Idaho is still close to the all-time ECHL single season record for points percentage which is .806.

- Another full schedule in the ECHL tonight with all 28 teams in action. Here is the ECHL Today with the previews: https://www.echl.com/en/news/2023/2/echl-today-feb-11

- ECHL leading scorer, Zach O'Brien, was called up to Toronto (AHL) this week and his point lead has shrunk. O'Brien has 61 points followed by Hank Crone (60 points) and Jack Combs (59 points). An updated point projection if they play in all 27 remaining Allen games is Crone (99 points) and Combs (94 points).

DID YOU KNOW: Leading ECHL goal scorers are dominated by one team. Four of the top five are from the Allen Americans:

25 goals: Jack Combs, Allen
24 goals: *Colton Hargrove, Allen
24 goals: Carter Turnbull, South Carolina
23 goals: Hank Crone, Allen
23 goals: Liam Finlay, Allen

*Hargrove has averaged over a goal per game since the end of December. He has 20 goals in the last 19 games. Averaging a point per game over a six week period is great. Averaging a goal per game over a six week period is off the charts.

Allen Win Streak at Four, Game Recap, Video Highlights, Costello Comments, Tonight's Lineup, Hargrove Gets the "C", Four Sure Guys, Best Teams with 2nd Period Lead and More

Allen's high octane offense overwhelmed Fort Wayne last night in a 7-3 win before a Thursday night crowd of 2956 at the CUTX Event Center. With the win, the Americans fourth straight and 11th in the last 14 games, Allen improved its points percentage to .511. The only other time all season Allen was above .500 was for one day at the start of the season when the Americans record was 2-1-0-0. The team has come a long way from early December when Allen's record was 5-12-1-0 and its point percentage was a mere .305. How has Allen done it? By sticking with the plan and not wavering in approach from what coach Costello put together at the beginning of the season.

- When I was saying at Thanksgiving, based on historical  hockey stats, Allen had virtually no chance of making the playoffs, Costello never gave me an inch. He kept saying he loved his team, they were playing the right way and they will make the playoffs. His goal was to win two out of every three games and the team has exceeded that goal. Allen's great play is not just a recent thing. Since Christmas the Americans record is 15-6-0-0 with a points percentage of .714. The crow dinner I am going to eat when Allen makes the playoffs is sounding better and better.

- It wasn't a great start for the Americans in the first period last night. They got out played, gave up the first goal of the game and went into the first intermission trailing 2-1. At that point the stats said it might be a long night for Allen. The Americans record when giving up the first goal was 5-16-0-0 (.238) and when trailing after the first period was even worse at 3-11-0-0 (.214).

- Forget the stats as the Americans came out in the second period and created quality chance after quality chance and when the dust settled Allen had outscored Fort Wayne 4-0 in the period to take a commanding 5-2 lead into the second intermission. Special teams played a big part of the success in the second period. The Allen penalty kill unit had to kill a long (89 seconds) 5-on-3 Fort Wayne power play and the Americans power play was 2-2.

- Allen built its lead to 7-2 with two more goals in the third period before the Komets scored late in the game on a defensive breakdown to make the final score 7-3.

- One of the Americans third period goals last night was on the power play which made the final power play stat 3-6 (50%). Allen was perfect on the penalty kill in the game (0-4). Special teams have been off the charts dominate over Allen's current four game win streak. The power play is 9-27 (33%) including three power play goals the last two games. The penalty kill is 1-22 (95.5%) including several 5-on-3 kills.

- Goal scorers for Allen were Kris Myllari (4), Colton Hargrove (22,23), Chad Butcher (4), Colby McAuley (2,3) and Hank Crone (23). Liam Finlay and Xavier Bernard had two assists. Here are the video highlights with the Allen goals. Notice all of the great passes and individual efforts.  https://www.echl.com/en/video/2023/2/fort-wayne-komets-vs-allen-americans---feb-9-2023-wkOHdgxF

- All of the streaks of Allen's leading scorers were extended last night. These numbers get more amazing by the day:

  • Colton Hargrove - 19 game point streak, 30 points (19G, 11A)
  • Liam Finlay - 11 game point streak, 20 points (10G, 10A)
  • Hank Crone - 14 game point streak, 24 points (9G, 15A)
  • Jack Combs - points in 18 of last 21 games, 32 points (11G, 21A)

CHAD COSTELLO COACH'S COMMENTS

"It was a good game tonight, I love our skill. I believed in these guys even when many others didn't. I really had their backs for a long time and we stuck with them even when it was very difficult. So it is very special to see them now with smiles on their faces and to see them happy."

"I wish you could all have a view of our locker room. These guys really enjoy each other. Whether it is at practice or after the tough first period tonight, they always stick together and that is great to see. We have big dreams and I think how they stick together will get us over the hump."

"Fort Wayne is a very strong team. They are relentless and aggressively attack our defensive corp. I challenged our defense to be as close to perfection as we could and they responded. Peressini played great which also helped."

'We are a fun team to watch right now. We have a team that competes very hard and that is a fun to watch from where I am standing."

"If we are going to be successful in the playoffs and winning it all is our goal, we will need to win in all different ways down the stretch. It is great winning games like we have lately, but in the future we are going to have to win 1-0 games, 3-1 games and those really tight games. How do we react in those really tight games when we are as confident as we are now, is the unanswered question. To win it all you have to be really confident but also have to be in control at all times."

TONIGHT'S LINEUP

  • Crone-Hargrove-McAuley
  • Combs-Butcher-Finlay
  • Gould-Hebert-Robidoux
  • Bethune              Young
  •
  • Myllari-Saucerman
  • Bernard-Massicotte
  • Gally-Gagnon
  •
  • Perry
  • Peressini (backup)

- If you attended the game last night or watched on FloHockey you noticed Colton Hargrove was wearing the "C" for the first time. Coach Costello didn't want to go the remainder of the season without a captain and after having a discussion with the team leadership, there was no doubt that Hargrove should become captain. Allen is fortunate they have lots of leadership in the locker room.

- Allen now has the #1 goal scorer (tied) in the ECHL in Jack Combs (24 goals) the #3 goal scorers in Hank Crone and Colton Hargrove (23 goals) and the #7 goal scorer in Liam Findlay (21 goals). The moniker they will be going by is "Four Sure" or "The Four Sure Guys" which they have certainly been for the Americans.

OTHER COMMENTS

- There is a full schedule of 14 games in the ECHL tonight. Here are the previews: https://www.echl.com/en/news/2023/2/echl-today-feb-10

- Hank Crone now has a 10 point lead in the ECHL rookie scoring race, (57 vs 47). Crone is already #2 in points by an Allen rookie since the team joined the ECHL in 2014-15. The only player ahead of him is Tyler Sheehy who had 70 points as a rookie in 2019-20.

- Allen's four game win streak is the longest current win streak in the ECHL. A reminder, the Americans longest win streaks of the season (three games, four games, four games) have all happened in the last month.

- Allen has scored 21 goals in the last three games (7.0 goal average) and 47 goals in the last nine games (5.2 goal average).

DID YOU KNOW: The ECHL Stats post today is about records with a second period lead. Allen's record when leading after the second period is 15-3-1-0.

ECHL teams with a 2nd period lead rarely lose. The overall ECHL record when leading after the 2nd period is 422-28-33-3, a points percentage of .905. Here are the best teams with a 2nd period lead. Don’t plan on a third period comeback against these teams:

17-0-0-0: Worcester
29-1-0-0: Idaho
22-1-0-0: Maine
20-1-0-0: Newfoundland
17-0-1-0: Fort Wayne
17-0-1-0: Toledo

Allen vs Fort Wayne Series Preview, Tonight's Lineup, SPHL Team Ceases Operation, 7 Marathons, 7 Days, 7 Continents and More

The Allen Americans take on the Fort Wayne Komets tonight in a rare Thursday night home game at CUTX Event Center. The teams will play the next three nights in a series that is critical for both teams. The Americans and Komets are currently in fourth place in their respective divisions trying to move forward. Why is it important for both teams to move up in the standings. Because fourth seeds don't fare well in seven game Kelly Cup series. Fourth seeds have to take on the best team in the division in the first round and it rarely ends well. Since 2017 fourth seeds are 1-15 in opening round series.

- Both teams come into this series feeling good about how they are playing. Fort Wayne has won six straight games, the longest current streak in the ECHL. They are 8-1-0-1 in the last 10 games, the best record in the league. The Americans have won three straight, are 8-2-0-0 over the last 10 games and have won 10 of their last 12 games.

- Allen did not win more than two games in a row from the beginning of the season to mid January. In the last three weeks the Americans have had a three game win streak, a four game win streak and are currently on another three game win streak. Allen started the season 5-12-1-0 (.305) but in the last 18 games have a record of 12-4-0-0 (.750).

- Fort Wayne started its season 5-8-3-2 (.417) but in the last 11 games has a record of 8-2-1-0 (.773). It is clear both of these teams are coming into this series playing their best hockey.

- Since Allen joined the ECHL in 2014-15 the Americans have played Fort Wayne as many times (four) in the playoffs as in the regular season. Fort Wayne has never played a regular season game in Allen. In the 2021 Kelly Cup playoffs Allen lost to the Komets 3-1, two of the loses were in overtime. I won't relive the overtime loss in Allen when Fort Wayne came back from a 4-1 deficit with 12 minutes remaining in the game. Allen is 1-3 against Fort Wayne in the regular season with all the games on the road, most of them years ago. The Americans were 0-1 in 2016-17 and 0-2 in 2017-18. Allen's lone regular season win against the Komets was earlier this season. It was a 5-4 shootout win. Luke Peressini stopped all three Fort Wayne shooters and Hank Crone scored the game winner.

- Fort Wayne has one of the better road records in the league, 13-7-0-0 (.650). Allen's home record is 8-8-1-0 (.500). Here are some other stat comparisons:

  • Average goals scored per game: 3.3 Allen, 3.7 Fort Wayne
  • Average goals allowed per game: 3.5 Allen, 3.6 Fort Wayne
  • Power play percentage: 21.1% Allen, 23.0% Fort Wayne
  • Penalty kill: 81.8% Allen, 84.4% Fort Wayne
  • Goal differential: -9 Allen, +3 Fort Wayne

- Allen has scored first in 51% of its games with a record of 16-5-1-0 (.750). When Allen doesn't score first its record is 5-16-0-0 (.238). That tells you all you need to know about the importance of a good start for the Americans.

- Neither team should expect good results when playing from behind. Allen's record with a second period lead is 14-3-1-0 (.805). Fort Wayne's record with a second period lead is 17-0-1-0 (.972).

- Including the 2021 playoffs Allen and Fort Wayne have gone to overtime in three of the last five games they have played. The extra time stats for these teams this season favor Allen, The Americans are 3-1 in overtimes and 1-0 in shootouts (.800). Fort Wayne is 2-4 in overtimes and 1-2 in shootouts (.333).

- Allen is averaging 3.3 goals per game for the season but over the last eight games the Americans are averaging 5.0 goals per game. The top four point scorers are all fire and will be trying to extend their terrific scoring. Here is a summary:

  • Colton Hargrove - 18 game point streak, (17G, 11A)
  • Liam Finlay - 10 game point streak, (10G, 8A)
  • Hank Crone - 13 game points streak, 22 points (8G, 14A)
  • Jack Combs - points in 17 of last 20 games (11G, 20A)

OTHER COMMENTS

- Idaho beat Tulsa last night 5-0 at home They will play again on Friday and Saturday. These teams played three game last week in Tulsa and the Oilers won twice. It was the first time all season Idaho has lost two games in a row. Playing the same team six straight games almost always ends up in fisticuffs. There were four fighting majors last night and it was only game four. When you consider Tulsa is ranked last in the ECHL in fighting majors and Idaho is ranked #18, two fights in a game is quite unusual. Makes you wonder what will games five and six have in store.

- The SPHL Vermilion County Bobcats announced this morning they have ceased operations, effective immediately. They are the team that didn't show up for its last home game, so this is not a big surprise. The team's record was 4-24-2-0 and its average attendance was 513 per game. - I don't normally post non-hockey stories but this one really hit me when I saw it last night. Maybe because I just got back from Antarctica and have now visited all seven continents. This feat seems almost impossible to comprehend but a bunch of overachievers just ran seven marathons in seven days on seven continents. This has actually been going on for several years but the first I have heard of it. For around $45,000 you can sign up for the World Marathon Challenge. One of the participants was from Frisco, there was an 80 year old from Oklahoma who completed the challenge for the second time and the first ever hand-cycle participant completed the challenge. The first stop was Antarctica. I read in another story it was -11 (actual temp) with 40 MPH winds.
