Allen vs Utah Series Preview

The Allen Americans are presented with a great opportunity with three games in the next four days at home against the Utah Grizzlies. The series kicks off tonight followed by games on Friday and Saturday. Statistically these teams are very close. Here are a few examples:

  • Allen's record is 2-3-0-0 (.400), Utah's record in 4-3-0-0 (.571). If Allen wins tonight the teams will have identical .500 points percentages.
  • Allen has scored and allowed the same number of goals (13), which is an average of 2.6 per game. Utah has also scored and allowed the same number of goals (21), an average of 3.0 per game.
  • Power Play Percentage: Allen 19.0% vs Utah 20.0%
  • Penalty Kill Percentage: Allen 78.6% vs Utah 77.8%

- Unless somebody shows up hurt or sick this morning, the Americans will have a full squad for the game tonight. With Jared Bethune playing forward, Allen will have 10 forwards and seven defensemen. Luke Peressini will start in goal and Logan Flodell, will be the backup.

- The Americans are ranked #2 in the ECHL in shots allowed per game (24.0). The good news is Allen gave up only six goals in its last three games. The bad news is in those same three games the Americans managed to score just five goals and lost two of the three games. If Allen is going to be successful in this three game series against Utah, the Americans will have to convert on more of their scoring opportunities.

- Scoring first and maintaining an early lead will be key for the Americans. This season, Allen is 2-0 in games they scored first and 0-3 in games they gave up the first goal. Allen has not lost when they have had a first or second period lead and haven't won when the have trailed after the first or second period.

- Utah defensemen, Andrew Nielsen (#44) was just selected as the ECHL Player of the Week. He had six assists in Utah's 7-3 win over Kansas City last Saturday. The six assists is tied for the second most assists in a single game in ECHL history. Nielsen leads all ECHL defensemen in scoring with 11 points (1G, 10A).

- Jack Combs will be looking to extend a couple of streaks tonight. Jack has a point in all five of Allen's games and has a three game goal scoring streak. Allen has scored a total five goals in the last three games, Combs has scored three of them.

- The referee scheduled tonight is #30 Yannick Jobin-Manseau. Don't think he has ever worked an Allen game.

OTHER COMMENTS

- There are only three games in the ECHL tonight. In addition to Utah at Allen, Idaho (6-1-0-0) is at Rapid City (2-5-0-0) and Wheeling is at Toledo. Here is the ECHL Today with the previews:  https://www.echl.com/en/news/2022/11/echl-today-nov-9

- In the last five seasons, Allen's record at home against Utah is 11-6-2-1. Last season the teams played five times and Utah won all five. Two of the games were in Allen and both went to overtime.

- By my calculation Utah has seven NHL/AHL assigned players, Allen has two.

-  Scott Conway, who played in Allen in 2020-21 is having another great season in Europe playing for the Belfast Giants in the EIHL. They have several different competitions, but if you add them all together Conway has played in 23 games and has 36 points (20G, 16A). Clearly the highest scoring former player in Europe.

DID YOU KNOW: Here is the ECHL Stats post for today. FYI, Spencer Asuchak has the most goals by an Allen player since 2019-20 with 55.

Most goals scored by current ECHL players since the 2019-20 season:

77 - Spencer Watson, Indy
76 - Brandon Hawkins, Toledo
76 - Blake Winiecki, Florida
70 - Andrew Cherniwchan, South Carolina
60 - Joe Pendenza, Florida
59 - Stefan Fournier, Wichita

Allen Starts Challenging Nine Game Stretch, Americans Stats Leaders, Best Third Period Teams and More

The Allen Americans are about to embark on a tough stretch of nine games in 18 days. It starts with three home games against Utah this week, followed by roads trips to Cincinnati, Fort Wayne and Idaho. Allen will be missing some key pieces. Forward Stephen Baylis was added to the injured reserve list yesterday, joining Spencer Asuchak and Justin Young and Mikael Robidoux, who is suspended, will not play again until December. Here is a look at what Allen is facing in this nine game stretch.

- Utah - three games (Wednesday, Friday, Saturday) against a talented team. The Grizzlies record is 4-3-0-0 but they have played five of seven games on the road. Utah Arrives in Allen on a two game winning streak, having won in Kansas City last Friday and Saturday. In its last game, Utah beat the Mavericks 7-3 and were 5-6 on the power play.

- Cincinnati - two games (November 16, 18) against what many say is the toughest place to play on the road. The Cyclones are off to a great start (5-0-0-1). Cincinnati is scoring 4.00 goals per game and allowing 1.67. They are also #1 in penalty minutes averaging 23.83 per game.

- Fort Wayne - one game (November 19) where Allen will have to travel from Cincinnati (200 miles) after the game to Fort Wayne. The Komets don't play on the 18th. This is a game the Americans should win. Fort Wayne is off to a bad start with a record of 1-3-1-1 and allow more goals per game (5.75) than any team in the league.

- Idaho - three road games (November 23, 25, 26) against the current Mountain Division leader with a record of 6-1-0-0. The Americans will have their hands full going against the best defensive team in the league. The Steelheads allow an average of just 1.57 goals per game and score an average of 4.14 goals per game.

- If you look at current points percentage and league rank for the four upcoming opponents the challenge is apparent.

  • .917: Cincinnati (3rd)
  • .857: Idaho (4th)
  • .517: Utah (13th)
  • .400: ALLEN (18th)
  • .333: Fort Wayne (22nd)

- As the Americans head into this nine game stretch they need to continue outplaying their opponents. As coach Costello said after the game in Wichita last Friday, "We have been the better team in all of our games, but we need to translate that into results." If Allen doesn't get the results the rest of November they will be on the outside looking in for the playoffs. A good start with three home games this week is essential. Going by practice yesterday, the team is full of energy and ready to go. Practices are fast paced and the team is working on areas of systems and structure to improve execution.

OTHER COMMENTS

- Talk about drama for an early morning game (9:00 am CST) between Norfolk and Worcester. The Railers are 8-0 and if they win today will set the all-time ECHL record for wins to start a season. The Admirals are 1-7 and yesterday replaced head coach Rod Taylor with assistant coach Jeff Carr. Some good story lines no matter the out come of this game.

- Three weeks into the ECHL season and three teams have still not lost a game in regulation, two of them from the North Division. If you look at the ECHL daily report, the stats say these teams have staying power for the long run.

  • 8-0-0-0 - Worcester
  • 7-0-1-0: Newfoundland
  • 5-0-0-1: Cincinnati

DID YOU KNOW: Good teams typically play great in the third period. Three of the top four ECHL teams in points percentage are the top teams in third period scoring. Here are the best teams in the third period, goals for and against, with current points percentage:

11-2: Newfoundland, .875
11-2: Cincinnati, .833
13-4: Idaho, .857

The exception to the rule is undefeated Worcester (8-0). The Railers have scored their fewest goals in the third period but are off the charts in the first period and very good in the second period.

3rd period: 9-7
2nd period: 11-5
1st period: 17-6

Meet Allen Americans Assistant Coach Aaron Gens

The Gens Family - Connor, Aaron, Leighton, Kellie

Allen assistant coach, Aaron Gens, is very familiar to most Americans fans from his two plus seasons as a player from 2014-16. His playing career was cut short when he suffered a spinal cord injury in a game in December of 2016 known as SIH (Spontaneous Intracranial Hypotension). This is a condition in which the fluid pressure inside the skull is lower than normal because of leakage of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). The major symptom of SIH is debilitating headaches that are worse when standing up. SIH is rare (5 people per 100,000) and often misdiagnosed. Aaron still deals with side effects from SIH. He has become a resource for other players dealing with long term issues related to head and neck trauma.

Aaron's accomplishments as a defenseman in Allen included two Kelly Cup championships (2015 & 2016). In 2014-15 he was an Ironman, playing in all 72 regular season games and all 25 playoff games. Here are some of his stats from that season:

  • ECHL most assists by defenseman, 48
  • ECHL most points by defenseman, 56
  • ECHL 2nd most PIMS by defenseman, 186
  • ECHL 2nd All-Star Team

- Despite suffering a career ending injury early in his third season in Allen, Aaron is still ranked in the top 10 all-time in many career statistical categories:

  • 5th all-time assists by defenseman (73)
  • 5th all-time PIMS by defenseman (273)
  • 6th all-time points by defenseman (92)
  • 8th all-time games played by defenseman (155)
  • 8th all-time goals by defenseman (19)

- I still remember contacting Gens for a player profile story when he signed in Allen in the summer of 2014. It took a few days for Aaron to get back to me, but his response was all you need to know about him. First he apologized for the delayed response and then he summed up what makes him tick, hockey, fishing and hunting.  "Sorry it has taken so long to get back to you, I have been training and fishing in Alaska for the last month." His priorities have changed since then so family now comes first, but hockey, fishing and hunting are still very important.

- Here is some background info on Aaron Gens from that original player profile in 2014.

Born (Februay 24, 1987) and raised in Baudette, Minnesota which is literally across the Rainy River from Canada, playing hockey and fishing is just what you do. Baudette is known as the "Walleye Capital of the World" as Willie The Walleye, a 40-foot, two-ton walleye welcomes you to the town of 1100.

Willie the Walleye

Aaron left home at 16 to start his junior career and what a change it was. Going from Baudette, where low temperatures in the winter average below zero and record low temperatures are minus 50 (not wind chill but actual temperature) he signed to play junior hockey in the North American Hockey League (NAHL) in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He spent his entire junior career playing for the Santa Fe franchise. In 2007-08 when the team moved to Topeka, he followed the team and helped Topeka win its first ever division championship. He exploded offensively with 58 points and set a franchise record with a plus-minus rating of +41. His efforts earned him many awards, including the team's “Defenseman of the Year” and “Most Valuable Player." The NAHL recognized him as “NAHL Defenseman of the Year” and Aaron was named to the All-NAHL All-Star team. His performance also earned him a Division I college scholarship at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks (UAF). A perfect place for a guy that loves hockey, fishing and hunting.

Aaron had a great hockey career at UAF where he played for four years and had 72 points (12G, 60A) in 140 games. He was the club's leading scorer among defensemen his junior and senior seasons.  He was also successful in the classroom as he graduated with honors, earning a degree in Business Administration (marketing).

After finishing his college career (2011-2012) he signed an AHL contract with the Lake Erie Monsters and played with them for seven games at the end of their season. The 2012-2013 season proved to be a special one for Aaron as he was able to fulfill a lifelong dream, Gens said this about that season, "Playing with my brother (Matt) in Evansville (ECHL) brought something I never thought would come my way. There was a type of chemistry that can't be explained. We grew up talking about it and skating with each other in the summer and when the dream came true to play with him, it was better than we had ever imagined.”

Old time Allen fans will remember Matt Gens as he played for both the Odessa Jackalopes (2010-2011) and the Evansville IceMen (2011-2012) when they were in the Central Hockey League (CHL).

In 2013-14 Aaron played for the Reading Royals and had 22 points (5 goals 17 assists) in 46 games. After signing with Allen in 2014, this is what Gens had to say, "I am so excited to be coming to Allen. The Americans have quickly become one of the top franchises in minor pro hockey. I feel I can add scoring from the blue line and contribute to what should be a very skilled defensive unit. Coach Martinson is a great coach with a winning record and I am looking forward to playing for him. I can't wait to meet all of the great people in Texas and get the season started as we build towards bringing another championship to Allen."

Aaron comes from a big family. Both of his parents, Dave and Mary Lee are ministers and he has three brothers and two sisters. All of his family are musicians. Many Allen fans got to know Dave Gens as he came to Allen several times during the regular season to watch his son play. But where Dave really became a celebrity was during the 2015 playoffs where he followed the team all over the country in his Toyota Prius. Remember, in that championship season, Allen played Tulsa in the first round, Rapid City in the division finals, Ontario (California) in the conference finals and South Carolina in the Kelly Cup finals. The last two rounds went seven games. Dave put on a ton of miles watching Aaron and the Americans win their first Kelly Cup.

Hockey has been a big part of Aaron Gens' life, growing up in a hockey town and starting to skate at two years old. He owes a lot to hockey as it has brought him a college education, a professional career and yes even a spouse. He met his wife, Kellie in 2012 when he was playing in Evansville, and yes, she was on the Evansville version of the Ice Angels, called the Icicles. Kellie and Aaron are now the proud parents of Connor (4) and Leighton (1).

Since his playing days Aaron's journey included a couple of years away from hockey as he was rehabbing from his injury. He was a project manager for an aerospace company during that time, but then returned to hockey as the Hockey Programs Manager for the Dallas Stars at their facility in McKinney. He also started coaching a travel team (16U). His team won a state championship last season.

While you will see references to Gens being a rookie coach, which is true at the professional level, he has over 20 years of experience with player skills development. Growing up in a small town, he was helping with the younger youth teams when he was 13-14 years old. He started his own hockey camp in Fairbanks while he was still in college. The Complete Defenseman Camp, focused on off-ice specific training and on-ice defensive skills. He also helped run a summer hockey school, Lake of the Woods Hockey School, in his home town for 10 years. He has worked at many other hockey camps over the years. He was a professional coach for both Minnesota Hockey and USA Hockey.

Taking on the role of assistant coach for the Allen Americans is a natural progression and working with Chad Costello is a big plus. Chad and Aaron work very well together in building practice plans, systems and structures. They have complimentary skills that help with skill development before and after practice. I think it is fair to say Costello is a man of few words and Gens is a man of many words, which is a great combination with situational communication. When on the bench during games, Gens is much more focused on team defense. It is early in the season, but so far the team defense is much improved from last season. Allen is ranked #2 in average shots allowed (24.0) and #7 in average goals allowed (2.60). Last season Allen was ranked #26 in shots allowed (35.3) and #20 in average goals allowed (3.39).

As the assistant coach, Gens is at all practices and behind the bench for all home games. He does not travel with the team to road games. If you know anything about salary for assistant coaches in the ECHL, it is not a living wage for a family of four. Aaron is an entrepreneur who has recently created a sports marketing and consulting business called, Victory Sports Group. There are several components to his new business including private on-ice and dry land training for youth hockey players.

If I had to describe Aaron Gens as a coach some of the words that come to mind would include, passionate, kind, warm, caring, fair, tough, accountability, demanding and honest.

Allen Out Shoots Wichita 31-16 But Comes Up Short, Game Recap, Video Highlights, Costello's Comments, Stats and More

The Allen Americans lost to the Wichita Thunder last night 3-2 before a crowd of 3053 at INTRUST Bank Arena. After a scoreless first period the Thunder scored three unanswered goals in less than five minutes early in the second period. The first two goals came just 38 seconds apart (2:05 & 2:43) with the third goal added at the 6:42 mark. To the Americans credit they kept grinding after falling behind 3-0. Allen cut the score to 3-1 at the 6:42 mark of the third period on Jack Combs' third goal in as many games. With the goalie pulled for an extra attacker, Colton Hargrove scored with five seconds remaining in the game to make the final score 3-2.

- Some stats and thoughts:

  • Allen outshot Wichita in all three periods and doubled up the Thunder in shots for the game (31-16)
  • Allen is now ranked #3 in the ECHL in average shots allowed per game (24.0) after finishing #26 last season allowing 35.3 shots per game.
  • Allen was 1-6 on the power play and Wichita was 1-5.
  • The #1 star of the game was Dillon Hamaliuk who had two of Wichita's three goals. Hamaliuk was the 3rd round (#55 overall) 2019 NHL draft pick of the San Jose Sharks. He has played two games for Wichita and has five points (4G, 1A).
  • The #2 star of the game is another assigned player from the Sharks, Strauss Mann. Since joining Wichita he has played in three games, won them all with a GAA of 2.00 and a .947 save percentage.
  • The #3 star of the game was Jack Combs who scored Allen's first goal. Jack has a point in all five Allen games this season and is tied for the league lead for longest goal scoring streak (3 games). Combs leads the team in points (6) and goals (3).
  • Colton Saucerman had an assist last night and now has five points (2G, 3A) in five games.  He is tied for third in points among all ECHL defensemen.
  • As predicted Nico Blachman and Wichita's Stefan Fournier dropped the gloves and it took just six seconds after the opening puck drop. You can see the fight in the video highlights below:

CHAD COSTELLO COACH'S COMMENTS

  • "We made a few bad plays in about five minutes early in the second period and it ended up costing us the game."
  • "We have been the better team in all of our games, but we need to translate that into results."
  • "Now is no time to panic, but it is absolutely time to respond and get after it as a group."
  • "We have areas where we can improve and that will be our focus this week."
  • "We have a few experienced pros out of the lineup. Hopefully there will be some changes soon."

OTHER COMMENTS

- In other Mountain Division action last night Utah won in Kansas City, beating the Mavericks 4-3 in overtime and Idaho beat Rapid City 4-1 at home. It is still early but there is starting to be some separation from top to bottom in the division. Remember, history proves the teams in playoff positions at Thanksgiving have about an 80% chance of making the playoffs. The Mountain Division standing by points percentage;

  • .833 - Idaho
  • .700 - Kansas City
  • .700 - Wichita
  • .500 - Utah
  • .400 - Allen
  • .400 - Rapid City
  • .333 - Tulsa

- While Allen is idle the rest of the weekend the other six teams in the division will be in action. Tonight Utah is at Kansas City, Wichita is at Tulsa and Rapid City is at Idaho. On Sunday Tulsa is at Wichita.

- The number of teams that haven't won or lost a game is now down to just two. Worcester is 6-0 and at home against 1-5 Norfolk tonight, so a good chance the Railers can extend their winning streak to seven. Iowa is 0-6 and plays Fort Wayne at home on Sunday in an effort to get its first points of the season.

- Put this in the odd stat category. Allen is oldest team in the Mountain Division averaging 26.17 years old, but no other team in the division has more than the nine rookies on the Americans roster.

DID YOU KNOW: Riley Gill is on many of the ECHL career stats lists. Maybe the most impressive are his three Kelly Cups and the most playoff wins (53) of any goalie in ECHL history. Here is my ECHL Stats post for today with another appearance by Riley:

MOST SHUTOUTS BY A GOALTENDER, CAREER

25 - Jeff Jakaitis (Columbia, Charlotte, Gwinnett, South Carolina - 2007-15)

25 - Marc Magliarditi (Columbus, Florida, Louisiana, Richmond, Las Vegas - 1997-2006)

21 - Riley Gill (Kalamazoo, Victoria, Reading, Allen - 2010-17)

20 - Jason Saal (South Carolina, Peoria, Hampton Roads, Dayton, Louisiana, Arkansas, Augusta - 1996-2005)

19 - Parker Milner (Stockton, Quad City, Missouri, South Carolina - 2013-20)

Allen vs Wichita Game Preview, Keys to the Game with Chad Costello, 2022-23 Rule Changes and More

It is game day for the Allen Americans as they are in Wichita to take on the Thunder for the fourth straight game. Allen will play Wichita 14 times this season (7 home, 7 away), more than any other team. After tonight, Allen won't see Wichita again until the middle of December. It is still very early in the season, but the game tonight is key for the Americans. If they win their record will improve to 3-2-0-0 (.600) and they will be in the top two or three in the division. If Allen loses, its record will drop to 2-3-0-0 (.400) and they will be out of a playoff position.

- Here are the cumulative stats from the first three games against Wichita:

  • Goals: Allen outscored Wichita 8-6
  • Shots: Allen out shot Wichita 93-74
  • Power Play: Allen was 2-9 (22.2%), Wichita was 4-18 (22.2%)
  • Penalties: Allen took 27 penalties for 81 minutes, Wichita took 18 for 41 minutes

- Good starts and special teams are always keys to winning. The team that scored first has won all three games against Wichita. While both teams have the exact same power play percentage (22.2), Wichita has twice as many opportunities as Allen. In the 2-1 loss to the Thunder on Saturday the Americans were 0-1 on the power play, Wichita was 2-6. Special teams will likely determine the winner tonight.

- I had a chance to talk to coach Costello yesterday to get his keys to the game.

  • "We need to continue to be a team that is hard to play against, but we need to learn to do so without taking penalties."
  • "We have generated more scoring chances than our opponent in every game thus far. We need to start cashing in on more of those chances."
  • "I like the way our team competes hard for loose pucks, we need to continue that tonight."
  • "One thing we have talked about is staying confident with the puck and managing it at the blue line. Sometimes the right play is getting the puck in deep and using our speed to get it back."
  • "Sometimes you have to have an eat with your hands mentality." (See below*)
  • "At times we try to make plays that are too hard, low percentage plays. I love how creative our players are, but as they are still building chemistry, shots and players driving the net are a better option right now, over the pretty play."
  • "Luke Peressini will get the start in goal and we will be using an EBUG as our backup."
*Thanks to coach Gens for the interpretation of this quote: "That means get down and dirty and score greasy goals as opposed to pretty silverware, which means easy, pretty goals."

- If you are looking for players to watch tonight it is a big group for Allen. Five players are averaging a point per game against Wichita (Combs, Saucerman, Crone, Myllari, Finlay). Wichita's top scorers with two goals and three points each are #17 Stefan Fournier and +29 Brayden Watts. Wichita has scored a total of six goals in the three games against Allen, Fournier and Watts have four of them.

- When you consider Allen will play their fourth straight game against Wichita tonight, and it seemed there was some unfinished business at the end of the game on Sunday, you could expect some gloves dropping in this game. It all depends how the game goes, but there is little doubt Nico Blachman will be asking Fournier to dance. Fournier was doing the chicken dance the last time these teams met in Wichita. It will be a different type of dance tonight, if he is willing.

- The referee scheduled tonight is #8 Tyler Hascall. Allen had Hascall twice last season and won both games. The most memorable was a game in Toledo on March 25. The Americans were outshot 44-20 but won the game 4-3. It was the most rarest of games as Hascall did not call a single penalty on either team.

- There will be some noticeable changes in visiting team player safety for the game tonight.

  • There will be a guard sitting in the seats the entire game to keep the peace.
  • There have been changes made to the railings.
  • My understanding is the fan that caused the issue the last time Allen played in Wichita has been banned from the arena.

OTHER COMMENTS

- Allen players that are not with the team in Wichita:

  • Injured Reserve: Asuchak, Young
  • Injured: Flodell, Baylis
  • Suspended: Robidoux

- There are 11 games scheduled in the ECHL tonight including six of seven Mountain Division teams. In addition to Allen at Wichita, Utah is at Kansas City and Rapid City is at Idaho. Tulsa is idle tonight but will play Wichita at home on Saturday and in Wichita on Sunday. Here is the ECHL Today with previews of tonight's games.  https://www.echl.com/en/news/2022/11/echl-today-nov-4

- There were several rule changes made for the 2022-23 season that have been flying under the radar.

  • For the first time, nine home games for each ECHL team will use the two referee system. Two referees have only been used in the playoffs in the past. Why just nine home games instead of all of them? It is pure and simple the cost.
  • A new rule requires coaches and officials to meet one hour prior to the start of the game in the hopes that these meetings create relationships that can help eliminate heated moments in the game.
  • The wording in the rule book on faceoffs was changed to allow the attacking center to choose who puts their stick down first. Previously the attacking center always had to put his stick down first. The idea behind the rule change is not all centers think putting their stick down second is an advantage. The new rule gives the attacking center the choice of who puts their stick down first. This rule change is one more opportunity to increase offense.

DID YOU KNOW: Last off-season, three ECHL teams reached into the locker room and moved a player (their captain) directly into the head coaching position. It is still very early, but the three have had varied results thus far. Here are the records:

6-0-0-0: Jordan Smotherman, Worcester
2-2-0-0: Chad Costello, Allen
0-4-0-0: Pete MacArthur, Adirondack

- Worcester has the best record in the league and is two wins away from equaling the ECHL all-time record for wins to start a season.

- Adirondack is one of two teams (Iowa the other) that are winless.

Getaway Day for the Allen Americans, Belleville Assigns Defenseman Zachary Massicotte, EBUG Needed Friday, Historical Record Against Wichita and More

It's getaway day for the Allen Americans. The team will practice late this morning and then jump on the bus for the six hour trip to Wichita where the Americans will take on the Thunder Friday night (7:05 pm). Some good news and bad news related to the roster yesterday. The good news was Belleville loaned rookie defenseman Zachary Massicotte to Allen and he will play in Wichita. The bad news is goalie Logan Flodell will not accompany the team to Wichita so the Americans will be using an EBUG. Under an abundance of caution, it was decided it is best for Flodell to stay in Allen and rest a slight injury.

- Allen will have a full lineup of 19 players for the game in Wichita but the mix is different. An EBUG, eight defensemen and nine forwards. Luckily Jared Bethune, who is listed as a defenseman as was intended to primarily play that position this season, has had to play forward a lot and will move up front. With Bethune playing forward the Americans will have seven defensemen and 10 forwards. Bethune has played forward for most of his career so his flexibility has been very helpful this season. Here is the roster for the Wichita trip.

  • #31 - Luke Peressini
  • #1 - EBUG

  • #3 - Ryan Gagnon
  • #4 - Kris Myllari

OTHER COMMENTS

- There were only two games in the ECHL last night. Newfoundland was at Worcester and lost 4-3 in overtime. In the other game, Idaho beat Rapid City 3-2 at home. Idaho leads the Mountain Division with a record of 4-1-0-0. Allen will visit Idaho over Thanksgiving (November 24) with games on November 23, 25, 26. Allen has been scheduled out west (Idaho or Utah) over Thanksgiving in six of the nine years the Americans have been in the ECHL.

- I mentioned yesterday there are reports that the Ottawa Senators owners are beginning preparation to put the team up for sale. Here is a story about one of the potential bidders, actor Ryan Reynolds, should the team go up for sale:  https://nypost.com/2022/11/03/ryan-reynolds-eyeing-up-potential-ottawa-senators-purchase-report/

- Wichita goalie Strauss Mann who made 29 saves in the Thunder win over Allen on Saturday was named the ECHL Goalie of the Month for October.

- Allen and Wichita have always been rivals stemming from the Central Hockey League (CHL) days when both teams had hard nosed and skilled teams. The rivalry was solidified in the 2012-13 season when the teams met in the CHL finals and the Americans won the championship in a come from behind overtime win in game seven. For the most part it has been a one-sided rivalry since the teams joined the ECHL in 2014-15. Allen has won two Kelly Cups, while Wichita has only made the playoffs twice. Allen's ECHL regular season record against Wichita is now 74-26-8-3. That computes to a points percentage of .716.

DID YOU KNOW: Last night, in a battle of undefeated 5-0 teams, Worcester beat Newfoundland 4-3 in overtime. Worcester is now 6-0 and within two wins of the all time record for wins to start an ECHL season:

LONGEST WINNING STREAK FROM START OF SEASON
8 - Trenton Titans, Oct. 12-26, 2001
8 - Dayton Bombers, Oct. 19-Nov. 4, 1994

New franchise, Savannah Ghost Pirates, is the only other ECHL team still undefeated with a record of 4-0.

Allen Americans Daily Report - Justin Young Placed on IR, Team Now Shorthanded, Ottawa Senators for Sale Soon, ECHL Save Percentage Leaders and More

ECHL roster sizes currently range from a low of 22 (Allen and Indy) to a high of 28 (Orlando). What accounts for the difference? The ECHL salary cap is the primary driver of how many players a team can have on its roster. Players on injured reserve (IR) do not count against the salary cap which means teams with high roster numbers have more players on IR. Another factor is how teams use their salary cap money. For the first month of the season, teams can have 21 players on the active roster as long as the total salary fits under the salary cap ($14,610). In addition, teams can have two players on reserve. That means the maximum number of players a team could have on its roster the first 30 days of the season would be 21 (active roster)  plus 2 (reserve) plus players on IR.

- Allen started the season with 22 players on the opening day roster. Only 20 players fit under the salary cap plus two on reserve. The Americans had no players on injures reserve. Things can change quickly and that is what has happened to Allen in the last week. Here is where the roster stands today:

  • Mikael Robidoux suspended 14 games
  • Spencer Asuchak placed on injured reserve
  • Justin Young placed on injured reserve
  • Stephen Baylis not practicing

- If Allen doesn't add any players, the Americans will head to Wichita on Thursday afternoon with just 18 (nine forwards, seven defensemen and two goalies). Remember, this season 19 players can can be in the lineup for each game.

- There is no doubt general manager Costello is working his contacts, trying to find a free agent, a trade, a player returning from Europe or a player sitting at home to help improve the roster situation. What is clear is Allen will have to add a player or two with so many players gone for an extended period of time.

- Friday night Allen will play Wichita for the fourth consecutive time. I will have a complete game preview on Friday, but here are the cumulative stats from the first three games.

  • Allen won the two games when they scored first, lost the game Wichita scored first.
  • Goals: Allen outscored Wichita 8-6
  • Shots: Allen out shot Wichita 93-74
  • Power Play: Allen was 2-9 (22.2%), Wichita was 4-18 (22.2%)
  • Penalties: Allen took 27 penalties for 81 minutes, Wichita took 18 for 41 minutes

- Allen's NHL affiliate, the Ottawa Senators, are going up for sale soon according to several reports yesterday. The Ottawa owner, Eugene Melnyk, died in March and left the team to his daughters. Melnyk purchased the Senators in 2003 for $130 million dollars. It's valuation today is estimated to be $655 million. It is expected if the team is sold it will remain in Ottawa. Here are the details from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun:  https://ottawasun.com/sports/hockey/nhl/ottawa-senators/garrioch-report-indicates-the-ottawa-senators-may-be-putting-up-a-for-sale-sign-soon
