CHL All-Rookie Team Announced
CHL Announces 2012-13 All-Rookie Team Thunder's Hanson and Mallards' Hellyer are Unanimous Selections GLENDALE, AZ (March 18, 2013) – The Central Hockey League (CHL) announced today the six member CHL All-Rookie Team for the 2012-13 season, selected through balloting of CHL head coaches. The Fort Worth Brahmas earned two spots on the team with forward Sy Nutkevitch and defenseman Daniel Spivak. Other forward spots went to Wichita’s Greger Hanson and Quad City’s Mike Hellyer and the remaining spot on the blue line is taken by Arizona’s Matt McCready. Allen’s Aaron Dell earns the spot in goal, the first-year player is also a finalist for the league’s Goaltender of the Year Award and Rookie of the Year Award (along with Hanson, Hellyer and Nutkevitch). 2012-2013 All-Rookie Team F: Greger Hanson, Wichita Thunder F: Mike Hellyer, Quad City Mallards F: Sy Nutkevitch, Fort Worth Brahmas D: Matt McCready, Arizona Sundogs D: Daniel Spivak, Fort Worth Brahmas G: Aaron Dell, Allen Americans Greger Hanson, Forward (Wichita Thunder): Hanson is one of two players to appear on all 10 ballots. He is fourth among first-year players in scoring with 44 points despite playing the fewest number of games of any player in the top eight in scoring due to injury. The Lidingo, Sweden native has scored 21 goals with 23 assists and is a +13 on the season. No rookie has taken more shots than Hanson (200) and his six game winning goals are first among freshman and tied for second among all players. The 5-10, 185-pound forward is one of five finalists for the CHL Rookie of the Year Award. Mike Hellyer, Forward (Quad City Mallards): Hellyer also appeared on all 10 ballots and is also a finalist for the CHL Rookie of the Year Award. He leads all first-year players in scoring with 59 points (23-36=59) and has the second highest plus/minus at +14. The Brandon, Manitoba native has been a consistent scoring threat all season recording 13 points in January and February and 11 points in November and December (he sits with 11 points in March). Sy Nutkevitch, Forward (Fort Worth Brahmas): Nutkevitch is third among rookies in scoring with 45 points (13-32=45) and is maybe the most dangerous special teams player among the rookie class. The 6-0, 172-pound forward is tied for third among first-year players with five power play goals and is tied for the lead among all freshmen with nine power play assists. He is a +16 on the season, highest among all rookies, and has been a key component for the Brahmas who have stayed in the hunt at the top of the conference all season long. Matt McCready, Defenseman (Arizona Sundogs): McCready is the top scoring rookie defenseman in the CHL with 27 points (4-23=27). The Sundogs acquired McCready in a trade with Missouri in December and in 32 games with Arizona, he has totaled 21 points (3-18=21) and a +2 plus/minus rating. The Kingsville, Ontario native appeared on half of the ballots. Daniel Spivak, Defenseman (Fort Worth Brahmas): Also appearing on half of the 10 ballots returned, Spivak earns a spot on the All-Rookie squad. The Thornhill, Ontario native has three goals and 10 assists in 46 games this season and is a +9 (highest among all d-men on the Brahmas roster). Out of the line-up since February 9 with an injury, the 6-0, 206-pound d-man had his best offensive month in December where he had two goals, four assists and was a +7. Aaron Dell, Goaltender (Allen Americans): Dell is also a candidate for the CHL’s Most Valuable Player Award and the CHL Goaltender of the Year Award. The first-year player leads all goalies with a 2.27 goals against average and is second with a .919 save percentage. His 20 wins are fourth in the league and he has twice been named the CHL Goaltender of the Week and was the CHL Goaltender of the Month for November. The Airdire, Alberta native is a big reason the Americans have been atop the CHL for most of the season. The All-CHL Team will be announced later today and the CHL Man of the Year will be announced on Tuesday, March 19. 2012-13 CHL Awards that have already been announced are: CHL Athletic Trainer of the Year – Vince Fedorowich, Arizona Sundogs CHL Gunner Garrett Equipment Manager of the Year – Romeo Vivit, Rapid City Rush |
Tough Loss, Jersey Auction, Thinel Article
I know a loss is a loss but when you out shoot a team 41-21, you have a power play that has scored 30% of the time against the team and go 0-8, have the best penalty kill in the league and give up three goals in six chances, have the best goalie in the league in net and you are playing at home against your biggest rival a loss really hurts. All of this happened yesterday as the Fort Worth Brahmas beat the Americans 4-3 and made the quest for first place a little more difficult.
- Todd Robinson didn't seem to take much time adjusting to his new team as he was definitely the quarterback of the power play unit. Robinson, who came over from Evansville was leading the ECHL with 61 assists. Todd scored the third goal for Allen and I didn't see him loose a faceoff. Several fans mentioned to me his -35 with Evansville which also was the worst +/- in the ECHL. Hopefully with the American's system this will be reversed. Todd was a +1 in the game.
- Adam Pineault continued his outstanding play with a goal and an assist and has three goals and four assists in the last four games. It looks like Adam has recovered from groin and rib injuries that have kept him out of the line up and slowed him down as he is flying on the ice.
- I don't normally complain about officials as I think all teams feel they get all the bad calls but the interference call on Trevor Ludwig in the third period was a bad call. It was also the back breaker as Ft. Worth scored their fourth goal seven seconds into the power play.
- The Americans point lead is now three over both Wichita and Fort Worth. With Ft. Worth only having three games remaining and they are all on the road in Arizona they have the toughest road to the point lead. You can't over emphasize the importance of the game on Tuesday for Allen as they take on the Thunder at the AEC. Let's win these last two home games!!
- Another jersey auction last night. I am always amazed that there continues to be an interest in all of these specialty jerseys but they do raise a lot of money for charity. Highlight last night was Booter Bootland once again auctioning off his own jersey and getting $850. The highest price for a jersey was $1000 which was the winning bid for the Lukin and Pineault jerseys. Friends and family were winners as I ran into Trevor Hendrickx's girlfriend, Cassi, in the parking lot with his jersey and Brian McMillin's younger brother, an aspiring hockey player himself, was the winner of Brian's jersey.
- I talked to several fans who were at the game at NYTEX on Saturday who felt the spearing suspension against Kerbashian was more of a case of him trying to free his stick after the Brahmas player fell on it during a face off than an attempt to injure. A penalty was not called on the play and since it happened on a face off you would assume the officials had a good look at the play. The CHL press release is below:
The Central Hockey League (CHL) announced today that Allen Americans forward Kale Kerbashian has been suspended indefinitely for his actions in Allen's win over Fort Worth on Saturday, March 16. Further review will be conducted and a final determination on the length of suspension will be announced in the next couple days. Kerbashian was observed spearing his opponent after a face-off in the second period of Saturday's game.
- It wasn't a great weekend for the former Allen Americans now playing in the AHL. Yellow Horn had one assist and was a minus four as Manchester lost two of three games. Skinner had no points as Grand Rapids lost both of their games this weekend. Scott Howes only played in one of Springfield's three games this weekend and had no points. Springfield lost all three games. Ryley Grantham did not score in Houston's last two games which they split, but Grantham had a fight in both games and still has only one minus game since being called up. While the season still has a ways to go as the regular season doesn't finish until April 21st Grand Rapids, Springfield, and Houston should make the playoffs. Manchester still has some work to do.

- I came across an article written by Bill Althaus at examiner.net, "Votes prove Mavs' Thinel is highly respected in CHL" which talks about the season Sebastien Thinel is having. Thinel was the first player I ever really followed from an opposing team back in 2009-2010. He was playing for Odessa and was so impressive in finding open teammates and putting them in position to score. He had 75 assists that year. Here is a portion of Bill's article.
Independence, MO —
It is now apparent that I am not the only one noticing the brilliant
season that Missouri Mavericks forward Sebastien Thinel is enjoying.
Time and time again I have compared his exploits on the ice to the once-in-a-lifetime season George Brett enjoyed back in 1980 when he led the Kansas City Royals to their first World Series appearance and flirted with the .400 mark.
Thinel dominated the Central Hockey League’s Best of the Best poll, which was released Friday morning. CHL players, coaches and operational staffers voted and the Mavericks were represented in 24 of the 50 categories with the Mavericks captain winning Best Overall Player, Best Playmaker, Most Valuable to His Team and Most Gentlemanly.
“I’ve been around a long time and been fortunate to win some honors,” said the former CHL scoring leader and MVP, “but I’ve never received this many honors. It’s nice, especially coming from your peers.”
Thinel leads the CHL in overall scoring (86) and assists (61). What makes that assist total even more impressive is that he plays with different lines of a nightly basis and no other member of the Mavericks is in the top 25 in scoring.
He is also among league leaders and leads the Mavericks with a plus-25 plus-minus rating.
“He will undoubtedly go down as one of the best, if not the best player at the Double-A level of professional hockey,” Mavericks coach Scott Hillman said.
“He went through an adjustment period last season, and we are seeing the real Sebastien Thinel this season. I had the honor of playing with Sebbie in (now-defunct) Odessa, and I saw him do some amazing things. But he has been amazing this season, just amazing. Nothing he does on the ice surprises me.”
Thinel’s play is a big reason Kenton Miller is a candidate for Rookie of the Year.
“When you play with Sebastien,” Miller said, “you better be ready to get the puck. He puts it on your stick and always puts you in the best position to put the puck in the back of the net.
Even goaltender Mike Clemente appreciates Thinel’s brilliance on the ice.
“Everyone thinks of him as a great offensive player, but he can get it done defensively and he’s great on the PK (penalty kill). And I’ve never been in a locker room with a better leader.”
The off-the-ice accolades are what have the most impact on Thinel.

Todd Robinson Signs With Allen - His Stats

IceMen Grant Permission for Todd Robinson to Leave the Team for CHL Allen in Quest for Championship
In making the announcement, Evansville Team Owner and Club President Ron Geary extolled his captain and expressed his great appreciation for two extraordinary years of the “T. Rob” era that catapulted the Evansville IceMen into the center of the pro hockey world and elevated the city of Evansville and the Tri-State area into the status of the new “Hockeytown.”
“We have enjoyed two great years of having Todd as such an integral part of our organization. He has been the focal point of many truly tremendous thrills for us and our terrific fans through his extraordinary on-ice talents and leadership. His enduring legacy in our team history will be one of being a player and leader for all occasions. In his first season, Todd was the major spark in leading us to a strong second place finish, our first-ever post-season playoff berth while becoming the first IceMen player to win the league scoring crown. However, it was in his second season with us where he was supremely tested and rose to the head of the class, again, with class. Todd led us unwaveringly through uncommonly inordinate adversity as our captain of the IceMen nation. As Todd moves on as our season comes to a close, we recognize what a great opportunity this is for Todd to win another championship and wholeheartedly send along our very best wishes and the very best of continued success.”
As for Robinson, the 14-year long-time veteran expressed mutual appreciation to an organization that left an indelible impact on his hockey career and life. “First, I want to especially thank the Evansville community for embracing me and my family with the warmest welcome with open arms from our very first day here. I am so proud of being part of this community as it has been a true joy to be here. There will never be a way to express my many thanks to the entire IceMen organization. Coach Rich Kromm brought me here and went the extra mile to provide all of the tools to achieve great success. To all of my teammates the past two seasons, thank you for always being there and giving everything, every day, every game. Finally, I want to salute our great fans for their incredibly strong support. The IceMen organization and its fans are a fabulous combination that represents excellence in our great game.”

Allen Wins, New Player, & Playoff Tie Breakers
![]() |
| Darryl Bootland scored the game winner 21 seconds into overtime - photo by Scenes ByKimberly.com |
- In addition to his two goals and an assist in the game Bootland was the only Allen player with a plus for the game with a +1. Booter is now tied with Maiani for the team lead at a +14.
- The power play continued to shine going 3-9 and is at a lofty 35% over the last three games. While we always do well against the Brahmas on the power play (29.4% for the 16 games played this year) let's hope the resurgent power play carries over to the four games after today.
- Keep an eye on Tomas Klempa today as he has been on a tear against the Americans in the first two games of the series. Four goals and an assist with two shorties is quite impressive. Tomas, who is from Slovakia, has his parents here visiting and he is really impressing them.
- Tyler Ludwig had a goal and an assist to give him 50 points for the year. His 40 assists leads all CHL defensemen by seven. To put into perspective the great scoring year Tyler is having in the last ten years going all the way back to his time with the Texas Tornado in the NAHL he has never had more than 29 points in a season.
- Give the team some credit for playing well without Berube, Maiani, & McKenzie. In addition, as is true with all teams this time year, we are playing with a lot of guys who are banged up. I heard some help is on the way. No specifics other than it was not a player from Europe. We will have to wait and see on this one.
- With Maiani out of the line up last night we are down to Jamie Schaafsma & Jason Deitsch as the only two players that have played in all 61 games this year. Quite a feat in and of itself.
- Former Americans player Mike Salekin did not play last night for the Brahmas as he was serving a one game suspension for a game misconduct cross checking penalty in Friday's game. It will be good to see Mike at the AEC this afternoon as he should be in the line up.
- With things so tight at the top and bottom of the standings in the CHL it might be good to review the tie breakers for seeding in the playoffs. The first tie breaker is most wins not including shoot out wins. The second tie breaker is head to head record. The third tie breaker is goals for and against differential.
- I'm sure everyone knows this but just as a reminder eight teams make the playoffs, all rounds are best of seven, and the teams are reseeded after the first round. Also remember in the finals the plan is to have two referees.
- Fort Worth has four games remaining all on the road as they play Allen today and go to Arizona for their last three games. Wichita has four games remaining with two at home (Allen & Missouri) and two on the road (Allen and Tulsa). Allen has five games remaining with three at home (Ft. Worth, Wichita & Missouri) and two on the road (Wichita & Tulsa).
- Should be a great game this afternoon. Keep in mind if Allen wins today it will guarantee they will finish no worse than second place. Hope to see many of you there.
- Finally, don't ever say Booter doesn't have a sense of humor. Check out the picture he posted last night.

Repeat Performance, Lose & Fight, Big Lukin Day
![]() |
| Jarret Lukin had a great day with two year end CHL honors & a goal - photo by chlphotos.com |
- Congrats to Jarret Lukin who had a big day by winning two year end awards as the CHL's best penalty killer and also the best defensive forward and then in the game showing some offense by scoring the final goal of the game as #32 got point #32 on the year. It was his 17th goal of the year and he accomplished this in front of his dad and uncle who are here to watch the three games with the Brahmas this weekend.
- Jarret's dad (Jay) and uncle had traveled all day to get to the game so were not aware of the two CHL awards when Tommy Daniels interviewed them during the first period intermission. It was great radio when Tommy informed Jay that his son had won not one but two year end awards. You could sense the surprise and pride in Jay's voice.
- There is a YouTube video of the fights at the end of the game: http://youtu.be/uldIe5p9QpI

| Garrett Clarke is now the all time leader in penalty minutes in a season - photo by ScenesByKimberly.com |
- With the 21 penalty minutes Garrett Clarke picked up in the game he becomes the all time single season leader in penalty minutes. His 197 penalty minutes surpasses Brandon Straub's 185 from 2009-2010.
- When I checked the stats on the blog yesterday afternoon I was astounded by the numbers as it was an all time high for page views with over 1000 for the day. When I looked into the detail I found over 700 people came to the blog to read the player profile I had posted about Garrett Clarke on December 6, 2012. Finishing third in the league as the best pound for pound fighter and most annoying player sure got a lot of people interested in reading about Garrett's story. It is a great story so check it out if you haven't read it. You can find it in the archives or at the bottom of the blog page where it lists most popular posts.
- The Americans had trouble generating offense when five on five. They were out shot by Fort Worth in all three periods and only generated six shots in the first period and didn't get a shot on goal until a power play with five minutes left in the period. In the second period Allen had five shots on goal and the third period nine shots on goal.
- On a positive note the power play was 2 for 6 which is the first time the Americans have had more than one goal on the power play since February 10th against Tulsa. Two games doesn't make a streak but the Americans are 3-8 on the power play in the last two games. With the success we have had on the power play against Ft. Worth this year (28.9%) look for the power play to continue to do well this weekend.
- While Allen gave up their first power play goal in six games the penalty kill was still great as they killed seven of eight power plays. Their league leading penalty kill percentage increased to 86.80%
- Arizona did Allen a favor by beating Wichita last night 4-3. Allen has a three point lead over Wichita and five point lead over Ft. Worth with a game in hand over both of them.
- Arizona, Denver & Quad Cities are all tied for sixth through eighth place in the standings with 64 points. The number one versus eight matchup in the first round of the playoffs is not going to be easy no matter which of these teams finishes in eighth place.
I assume everyone has seen the results of the Best of the Best awards that were announced yesterday so I won't post them here. If you want to see all of the detail you can find it on the CHL web site. I have some thoughts on the results:
- The Ice Angels have won the best cheerleaders/dance team for the last three years but this year they got the highest number of first place votes of all 50 categories. Congrats!!
- Congrats to Wally & Kacee for finishing third in the best training/equipment category. They are always in the top three in this category and if you polled the players they are the best.
- I mentioned earlier Garrett Clarke finished third in the most annoying player category. Did you know as a player Dan Wildfong, coach of the Brahmas, was the winner of this award.
- Darryl Bootland won the award for the best power forward. The Americans won this award last year as well as Bruce Graham was voted best power forward. Bruce also won best stick handler last year.
- Congrats to Tommy Daniels for finishing second in the best broadcaster category after winning the category last year.
- We lost our best logo crown to the new guys in town as the Denver Cutthroats won best logo, an award the Americans have dominated in the past.
- Congrats to Aaron Dell on being selected the best goaltender. If you remember last year we had the unusual happen as the Americans finished second (Marco Cousineau) and third (Rejean Beauchemin) in this category.
- Did you know in their first year of existence (2009-2010) when the Americans finished second to Rapid City for the President's Cup they did not win a single year end award in any of the player categories.
- The most under appreciated person in this year end award process is announcer Lee Hastings who does an outstanding job and has never finished in the top three. COME ON, MAN!!

Crunch Time In North Texas

Big weekend for the Americans starts tonight with the first of two games at NYTEX Sports Centre before returning to the AEC Sunday afternoon. Playing any team three days in a row makes for interesting strategy and we know what happened the last time this happened. I personally think these games will be calm by comparison as there is too much on the line in the standings. The games will be more like playoff hockey in my opinion. The blurb below is how the CHL is promoting the game.
Will The Rivalry Get a New Classic to Talk About?
One of the biggest rivalries in the CHL adds another chapter this weekend as the Fort Worth Brahmas host the Allen Americans on Friday and Saturday and the scene shifts to the Allen Event Center for Sunday’s final regular season showdown. This year has had its drama in the series and the first place Americans hold the on-ice advantage with an 8-3-3 record. The clubs have combined for 743 penalty minutes in their 14 previous games (53 combined PIMs per game). The Brahmas trail the Americans by six points and if they have any hopes of catching them in the standings, they need a ton of points this weekend.
Stats Versus Fort Worth:
- Some players to keep an eye on this weekend for the Americans are Tyler Ludwig who has 16 points in the 14 games played against the Brahmas including 13 power play assists. Darryl Bootland leads the team with six goals against the Brahmas and has only played in 10 of the 14 games. While the Americans power play has not been working well lately we have always done well against the Fort Worth penalty kill.
- Drew Daniels has five of his twelve points against the Brahmas and leads Allen in plus minus with a +6 in the 14 games played thus far. Combine that with the good luck he gets from his player profile being published this week on this blog and look for Drew to add to his point total this weekend.
- Early goals may also be something to keep an eye on during the series as in the 14 games played this year the Americans have scored 18 goals in the first period, 10 in the second and 16 in the third while Fort Worth has 5 in the first period, 17 in the second and 14 in the third.
- Since joining the CHL Allen has an overall record against Fort Worth of 28-10-7 but at NYTEX Sports Centre the record is 11-8-3. At the AEC the record is 17-2-4.
- Aaron Dell has started the last seven games in net for the Americans and is 6-1-0. In the 14 games against Fort Worth Aaron Dell is 4-2-2 and Steve Silverthorn is 4-1-1. Will Silverthorn get one of the starts at NYTEX this weekend? I predict yes.
- Keep an eye on #27 John Snowden as he leads the Brahmas is goals scored against the Americans with nine goals and has only played in 10 of the 14 games.
- If Allen wins two of the three games this weekend they will be guaranteed of finishing no worse than second in the final standings.
- Good luck to Allen Americans players and staff as today starts the announcements of year end awards. Today the equipment manager and trainer of the year are announced. My next profile story is about equipment manager Kacee Coberly.
